Gakuo Ndonga is an application engineering expert with SKF USA Inc. He has spent over eight years working in the fluid industry with expertise in rolling element bearing applications for pumps. Gakuo is a graduate of Rowan University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Early in his career Gakuo was exposed to working in the industry as mechanic and later as a sales engineer. This early exposure helped him understand technical problem solving from different perspectives and segments of the business. As an application engineering expert, Gakuo contributes to industry publications such as Pump and Systems, Pump Engineer, and Plant Services magazines. He also helps train and mentor others in the field. Gakuo is also passionate about fostering diversity, equity and inclusion and is helping his organization drive meaningful change both internally and out.

She helps business and policy leaders in commercial real estate, energy, and water management through systems-based and context-specific sustainability and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategies. She has lived in 7 countries and worked in over 20, navigating different disciplinary, cultural, and regulatory landscapes in five languages.

Mr. Perez has authored numerous articles for magazines and conference proceedings, five books, and coauthored five books covering machinery reliability. He is also the technical editor of Kane’s Rotating Machinery Dictionary.

Jamie is an associate vice president and senior project manager with HDR in Denver.

Jamie has been an active member of WEF since college, participating in student chapter events that ultimately led to his first job in the water sector. A member of the Rocky Mountain Water Environment Association, Jamie served as president in 2010, before joining the House of Delegates where he served as Speaker of the House in 2015-16. He has also served on several WEF committees including the Government Affairs, Public Communications and Outreach, Finance, and Audit committees.

Jamie is a professional engineer and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, both in environmental engineering, from the Colorado School of Mines.

He has conducted training classes on submersible centrifugal wastewater pumps, designed low-pressure sewer systems, and is now leading the Industrial Sales effort in the Central Region.

He has led and participated in several pump training seminars conducted by this organization over the last 10 years, following both SWPA and Franklin’s model to educate the industry.

Hilary Johnson, an MIT doctoral student, who just won the Lemelson-MIT Student Prize, has solved a big problem related to hydraulic pump inefficiencies. She has invented an entirely new kind of centrifugal pump (called a “variable volute” pump) that does something engineering experts previously thought was impossible -- it physically adjusts to more efficiently move water based on immediate need, resulting in energy and cost savings. The 5 percent energy improvement over the lifetime of a pump is a huge savings considering the hundreds of billions of kilowatt hours they consume.

With more than 40 years of experience in the industrial pump arena, his areas of expertise include diagnosing pump problems and seal failure.

As a teen, Larry took a job as a mechanic apprentice in a steel mill and in 1968, went into the Navy and continued working with pumps. After the military, Larry graduated from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. For a number of years, Larry sold and repaired pumps and pump parts. At night, he began designing his own products and solutions to pump problems.

Today, Larry is a leading expert who provides training courses on pumps. He speaks fluent English and Spanish, and can conduct his courses and consultations in both languages. Larry has written a book on pumps in both English and Spanish, both are available for sale on our books page.
