Maxine Alleyne-Esprit is a communications professional with a long history of community engagement and accountability to affected populations.   Her work in communications and community engagement has spanned a period of 25 years on behalf of private sector, community-based organizations, business support organizations, and the UN, specifically through the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Karina is an Environmental and Development Engineer with a Master’s degree in Project Management. She currently serves as a Senior MECC Associate at the IOM Regional Office in Panama, where she supports the design and implementation of projects related to migration, environment, and climate change. Her main areas of work include the use of participatory methodologies, project development in Indigenous communities, and the application of the Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) process. She has contributed to the design, monitoring, and evaluation of initiatives aimed at sustainability, climate resilience, and the promotion of community well-being.

Nicole Joseph-Chin is a globally recognized Trinbagonian social entrepreneur and social impact strategist committed to the delivery of social care and empowerment through the lenses of women’s health.

She is the Founder of Ms. BrafitTM (a social care brand founded in 2002) and CEO of MBF Enterprises, both leading in the dialogues around breast-empowerment as a gender, health, wellness and social empowerment discourse and solution towards ending and breaking psychosocial stigmas around body empowerment, health, gender based-violence, safety and self-agency.

Dr Paula Henry, a primary care physician and a Public Health practitioner, graduated from the University of the West Indies (UWI) Jamaica in 1980. She holds a diploma in Family Medicine, an MBA from the Edinburgh Business School and an MPH with distinction from UWI.  She is also a director of EarthMedic EarthNurse Foundation for Planetary Health. Dr Henry who considers herself a social scientist par excellence, is passionate about policy change as a pathway to sustainable solutions to the climate crisis. Incidentally she also holds a Diploma in Theology.

Yet these same women design and lead some of the most innovative, community‑rooted solutions, from youth empowerment programs to regenerative agriculture initiatives.

Despite growing recognition, women’s leadership remains under‑resourced and under‑represented in policy, finance, and decision‑making arenas. This panel elevates women’s agency and knowledge systems at the center of climate action, proposing that cultivating equity is inseparable from cultivating effective solutions.

Women are powerful agents of change, with the capacity to drive innovative, and lead inclusive, and community-engaged climate solutions. Addressing the climate crisis requires more than symbolic inclusion; we need women in senior positions across governments, businesses, industries, and communities who are prepared to lead boldly and equitably.

To truly transform systems, we must challenge narrow perceptions of women’s leadership and ensure that women in power are supported, resourced, and empowered to advocate for themselves and others.

Jacintha Realine - Wapichan Women’s Representative, She is from Aishalton village, located in the Wapichan Territory of the South Rupununi, Guyana, has worked with the South Rupununi District Council (SRDC) as its Cultural Heritage Coordinator, interviewing elders to document the Wapichan culture and was part of a core set of youths who lobbied the SRDC to organize the first ever Wapichan Youth Conference. Her work focuses on Indigenous women’s empowerment, land and resource management.

Steffy Heera - Chief Customer Officer at Renewable Power Caribbean Limited, over 18 years of cross-disciplinary expertise, with insights into the intersection of land use, food security, and energy production, leveraging her Human Resource Management experience for the human capacity element of the renewable energy transition, ensuring inclusivity and skill development. 

Moderator - 

Marion Atieno Osieyo is a storyteller and advisor working at the intersection of nature, culture and human flourishing. Her work supports inner and social transformational approaches to Earth care with the aim of helping humanity reconcile our relationship with Mother Earth. She is the founder and host of Black Earth, an award-winning podcast and community exploring how black women are restoring ecosystems, communities, and harmonious ways of being in relationship with the rest of nature.

With small island states facing the multiple crises of climate change and economic and geopolitical uncertainty, the time for bold, united action is now. Prof. Hamilton reflects on the timely launch of the CLASP Initiative and how CARIPHIL is building a regional movement to unite funders, stakeholders, and grassroots leaders to drive climate action, emphasizing collaboration and innovation.

We also explore the Lasko Chin Foundation’s rapid and deeply strategic response to Hurricane Beryl, including an innovative relief model that targeted community corner shops and micro-enterprises across Jamaica. With over 4,000 people reached in the first week, and gender-sensitive support for entrepreneurs, with the support of their partners, the Foundation’s work shows how localized, data-driven, and collaborative responses can transform disaster recovery.

Prof. Hamilton shares candidly about the need for deeper regional dialogue among Caribbean philanthropic organizations.

Climate change poses significant threats to Indigenous ways of life, including extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall and prolonged droughts. These impacts affect health, food security, ecosystems, biodiversity, and even force community relocation, leading to the loss of traditional cultural practices and Indigenous knowledge.

Indigenous communities in Suriname have not yet accessed climate finance. However, VIDS, with donor support, has implemented projects focused on climate change awareness and research. 

Shailina believes that access to climate finance could have positive impacts on Indigenous communities. Such funding would empower Indigenous people to advocate for land rights and participate in decision-making processes at national and international levels. 

Although Indigenous peoples constitute less than 5% of the global population, they play a crucial role in preserving 80% of the world’s biodiversity, acting as protectors of forests, water, and wildlife. 

Indigenous livelihoods contribute zero carbon emissions, making it imperative to support Indigenous rights and initiatives. She calls for the inclusion of Indigenous People in policymaking and for opportunities to share their experiences and knowledge.

As World leaders convene at the UN Climate Change Conference, COP 28, to negotiate collective action and the operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund, the Caribbean is particularly concerned about the impacts of rising global temperatures such as extreme weather events and sea level rise. 

In the face of increasing climate vulnerability, how does inclusive insurance facilitate sustainable change to enhance equity and boost resilience?  

Cytandra outlines how Inclusive insurance operates at the intersection of impact, inclusion, and profit. It challenges the idea of traditional insurance products, shifting from the reaction side of natural hazards to the proactive side, i.e., developing resilience. It includes developing insurance products that cater to the “uninsured”, the traditionally vulnerable and marginalized populations, the ones most impacted by climate change.

This climate solution is relevant to boosting resilience in both the Global North and the Global South where climate impacts unfold. 

To harness the power of this new model of insurance to facilitate sustainable change, enhance equity, and boost resilience Cytandra recommends that more focus be placed on: 

• Early Warning systems

Dr James Fletcher provides an overview of the history and Caribbean presence at COP, emphasizing this year’s priority areas for the region. 

Dr. Fletcher played a critical role in negotiating the Paris Agreement, with the goal of limiting global temperature increase to below 1.5 degrees Celsius at COP21.

Unfortunately, the years post-COP21 have not lived up to the promise of Paris. Ambitions for greenhouse gas reduction have not gained momentum as needed. Progress on loss and damage has been slow, climate finance remains a challenge for the debt-laden Small Island Developing States, and there's a significant risk of global temperature increase surpassing the 1.5 degrees Celsius goal.

Ije Ikoku Okeke speaks about the solution to mobilize climate capital and scale energy resilience in the region. 

Ms. Okeke has 15 years of experience in project development, working in Latin America, the Caribbean, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Project preparation and development is a crucial prerequisite for the large-scale deployment of sustainable energy solutions. RMI (Founded as Rocky Mountain Institute) identifies it as a necessary step to attract investors and move projects beyond the pilot phase. RMI collaborates with governments, identifies clean energy investment opportunities, and secures funding to move projects to financial close. Ije shares the example of the positive impact of project preparation and development in deploying renewable energy in St. Lucia.

Ije sees COP28 as a crucial platform to progress the dialogue on achieving energy transition goals. The expectation is to exchange ideas, share learnings, and seek partnerships to deepen impact.

Lydia describes her slow transition from working in the fashion industry to organic farming and a vegan lifestyle. Embracing unlearning changed her life, including her relationship with food and the environment. Her shift to veganism challenged her personal relationships and her view of herself and the world. On this journey she realized that her actions had an even bigger impact than her words and that being an example conveys an even stronger message. 

Lydia strongly advocates for changing the way we grow our food. Sustainable agricultural practices would eliminate the environmental pollution and degradation caused by conventional agricultural systems. She highlights her experience rehabilitating degraded land in Costa Rica.

Lydia is changing the local food industry with her whole food plant-based vegan catering company in Georgetown Guyana. She is very intentional in the selection of ingredients and packaging, influenced by her travels and time working on different farms. 

 She shares strategies for being one with the land even in an urban setting. For Climate-friendly diets, Lydia recommends shifting away from overly processed and packaged food because of the impact on our health and the environment, avoiding plastic packaging and changing our daily habits to align with our values.

Despite their vulnerability, women and girls should not only be seen as victims of climate change, but as active and effective agents and promoters of solutions. The inclusion of women in leadership will lead to more diverse problem-solving and would lead to more effective resilience strategies that support inclusion and justice for all people. 

Women in leadership is necessary but one woman in a high position does not mean that equity has been achieved. It also does not mean that they would lead with a feminist and intersectional framework that is needed in addressing the intersecting issues of climate change. In addressing the climate crisis, we need women to reach senior management and leadership positions in various spheres: government, business, industry and communities who are willing to lead boldly, inclusively and with a feminist lens. We need to go beyond the preconceptions about the effectiveness of women as leaders. When women attain leadership roles, it is imperative for them to feel supported and equipped to advocate for themselves and others. An important aspect of feminist leadership is mentorship to empower women as we climb the ladder of success.

The destruction brought on by climate change intersects with the issues of gender inequality and injustice. The Caribbean is not a monolith, it is necessary to note the diversity in its people, histories, landscapes, and livelihoods which impact countries’ abilities to respond to natural hazards and climate risks. 

In the face of these challenges, Caribbean people continue to develop solutions  and hold their governments accountable. Whether it is challenging the oil and gas industry in Guyana, bauxite mining in Jamaica or deep sea mining in the Caribbean marine space, women and youth continue to be at the forefront of Caribbean climate change advocacy and activism. Arica has more than a decade of experience in the environmental field. Her work focuses on providing people and communities with the resources they need so that conservation action can be locally led. Arica shares her unique perspective that sustainable development should be reflective of our culture and traditions, along with consideration for people and natural resources.

Liza has over 20 years of international experience in enterprise generation, business planning, project management, and team operations. Among many other titles, she is the Founder and CEO of Soca Samosa in Trinidad.

In the Caribbean, MSMEs contribute significantly to employment, GDP, and innovation. As small island developing states (SIDS), Caribbean face additional socioeconomic issues exacerbated due to the pandemic. Liza believes that sustainable development can only be effectively achieved with major investment and intentionality. This not only includes financial investments, but also understanding, mindset shifts and commitment from all stakeholders, not just policymakers.


Liza points out that while we should be pursuing sustainable development and climate resilience, there is still an urgency to provide for the needs of today even as we think about the future. 

We learn about the concepts of green, blue, and circular economies in this episode. In order to secure a climate resilient future, there needs to be an acknowledgment of the pressures on our Caribbean resources and make intelligent decisions around their management. It is important to note that enterprises that incorporate these concepts are feasible, and there is growing interest even from investors.

Liza shares her own experience with Soca Samosa and how they were able to improve their environmental and social impact. The pandemic pushed her to become more innovative and seek out new networks, and as a result, her business became more sustainable. Business owners are challenged to consider how they can move from being an enterprise to being a social and an environmental enterprise as well.

To wrap up, Derval and Liza discuss the role MSMEs can play in building back a better Caribbean. Liza suggests that MSMEs first need to be recognized as a stakeholder in decision making. Small businesses also need greater access to financing and improved financial literacy in order to build back our economies. When MSMEs are financially sustainable, then they can do more to support environment and social sustainability.

Professor Moore is a Professor of Economics and a Deputy Principal at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. His recent research examines the issues surrounding the green economy, private sector developments, as well as the economic impacts of climate change on tourism.

Building back a better Caribbean after the pandemic is about making sure that investments and recovery are aligned with sustainable development. Professor Moore believes that sustainable development is all about ensuring growth and opportunities, while still minimizing the impact on the environment. 

Some of the efforts he believes Caribbean nations should take to be more resilient include embedding the green concept in everything we do, utilizing technology in agriculture to improve food security, and improving health information networks.

Professor Moore dives into the concept  of green growth and what it really means. He explains how this can benefit the Caribbean, especially in the post COVID-19 era. He also describes how different technologies are used in Barbados to benefit both the environment and the economy. He also explains what the just transition of the workforce means. 

There are three types of investments that Professor Moore  recommends to support the just transition: green investments, investments in people, and research and development. 

To wrap up, he highlights his biggest takeaways from the pandemic, and the recommendation he has for the region to maximize the benefits of post-COVID recovery measures.

Judith Wedderburn brings her decades of experience as an educator, facilitator, advocate & researcher in the field of gender & development in Jamaica & the wider Caribbean. This episode is in collaboration with the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI) as part of the Better than Before: Leveraging COVID-19 Recovery for a Sustainable Caribbean series.

From Judith’s perspective, sustainable development is strongly linked to poverty reduction and gender equality. So, for the Caribbean to build back better, investments & post-COVID recovery measures must be aligned with fairness, inclusion, justice & economic development. There must be commitment to understanding the gaps in equity through research using a gender lens.

Judith explains how all forms of social inequalities, including gender inequalities, are systemic. Therefore, it is important to take a gender-responsive approach to development. This means that men's gender needs, like those of women, are taken into account. She shares some of her work across the Caribbean that has helped women become their best advocate and give them a voice to address the gender gaps.

In this episode we hear sobering insights about the reality of the impacts of COVID-19. Judith explains how the pandemic has made the social situation worse, especially for young girls, as access to safeguards against abuse or violence has been lost. Furthermore, the pandemic prevented persons from engaging in normal social engagement, which is part of the social inclusion that is commonly experienced.

To build back better, Judith believes that as a Caribbean we are stronger together. We need to share information, and work together against common challenges.

With a mission to promote and facilitate stakeholder participation and collaboration in the stewardship of renewable natural resources in the Caribbean, there’s a lot to do. 

When it comes to COVID-19, Nicole emphasizes that it is just part of multiple intertwined crises. Therefore, the pandemic recovery investments are an opportunity to holistically rethink and reimagine Caribbean development.

Based on these recovery packages announced by Caribbean governments, CANARI developed an analytical framework to assess COVID-19 recovery responses in the Caribbean. Nicole shares details of the framework and its 4 focus areas during our talk, along with some interesting findings. 

Nicole notes that it is critical to remember that while research, policies and plans are important, work on the ground is also needed. She gives some insights into the work CANARI does on the ground. She believes that the government, the private sector and civil society all need to come together to make the changes needed.

As this episode wraps up, Nicole shares what’s on her wish list for accelerating the transition to sustainable, inclusive, and resilient developments in the Caribbean.

The Climate Conscious Podcast, is an independent project for communication and advocacy on Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability relevant to the Caribbean and Small Island Developing States. 

Recognizing the disconnect between the global climate conversation dominated by the views and voices of the developed world, and the lived experience of the Global South; the Climate Conscious Podcast was born. 

The podcast sets out to:

1.     Firstly, provoke mindfulness and stimulate non-technical discussions on the risks and impacts of global climate change, as well as the measures that can be taken to address them.

2.     Secondly, the podcast amplifies the voices of Caribbean climate change stakeholders and any relevant efforts for mitigation or adaptation. 

3.     Thirdly, this resource increases public awareness on issues of climate change and environmental sustainability in and around the region.

We use the medium of podcasting to engage a diverse audience, to own our experiences, to capture learnings, and to tell our stories with authenticity and an appreciation for the nuance of the Caribbean context. 

To date we’ve released 34 episodes, featuring guests from the Caribbean and beyond, while connecting with a global audience in 94 countries. We have covered a wide range of topics, including Fashion, Energy, Waste, Gender, Soils and Climate Justice. 

 There’s much to unpack as we take ownership of our sustainable Future. 

 And we are super exited for you to join us for Season 4.

Dr Masaō Ashtine completed his doctorate in 2016 at the University of Cambridge, where he researched climate change implications for the UK's wind energy sector. This followed 6 years at York University in Toronto, Canada, where he gained his Undergraduate and Masters Degrees in Environmental Sciences and Climate Modelling respectively. After his PhD, he worked with the renewables company, 3E, in Brussels as a data scientist intern for the optimisation of wind power models across Europe.

Masaō has recently completed a Lectureship at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica where he was the research lead for the Alternative Energy Group at the Department of Physics. He has now joined the OERC team, working with Professor David Wallom as a postdoctoral researcher for Project LEO. Masaō is the Co-Founder of the Journal of Caribbean Environmental Sciences and Renewable Energy (CESaRE).

Hydrocarbons are not only an important source of fuel but also inputs into a host of other processes and materials. Energy, economy, and environment are inextricably linked. While fossil fuels will continue to be relevant, there is growing demand for alternatives: renewables, to satisfy the need for clean energy and energy security. 

But have we found the “killer app” to replace the functionality provided by fossil fuels? 

How do we wean ourselves from this volatile yet lucrative fossil fuel economy? 

How do we reorganize our economic and industrial systems, our consumption patterns to decarbonizing energy systems? 

What does this mean for future society and economy? 

Energy consultant Nneka Matthews and Host Derval Barzey discuss the link between energy and economics and the influence of increased pressure for sustainability. We examine the evolving energy systems and the changing social contract.  Its tricky with GDP being so closely tied with energy consumption. Can we sustain economic activity as we encounter limits to growth and push the earth into ecological overshoot? Have we exhausted the existing business models? 

The wheels of change have started turning. All we have are a best guess of the outcomes. As dynamic and exciting as the energy sector is, this transition will be nothing less exhilarating. It’s fascinating to see how businesses and economies respond to the compelling case for decarbonization.  Will they be first movers or late adopters?

Climate change is an ongoing  thereat to the Caribbean region's tourism industry with its devastating impacts on both natural ecosystems and man-made infrastructure, from sea level rise and stronger, more frequent hurricanes. In addition, the COVID 19 pandemic has crippled this vital economic sector due to lockdowns and  travel restrictions. As we anticipate reopening and recovery, it's the ideal time to rethink the way we do tourism with a greater emphasis on sustainability, minimising the dark side of tourism: pollution, over-tourism, and repatriation of revenue. We must protect our natural assets such as coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass bed, building resilience not only for the sake of tourist but for the well-being of local communities.  

How can you become a conscious, sustainable, impact traveller? 

• Avoid single use plastic
• Intentionally support local producers. 
• Consider extended stays 
• Find out the needs of the local community and volunteer to assist 

We can even go a step further to regenerative tourism,  participating in initiatives that leave the destination better than we found it, for example assisting with conservation measures and managing the impact of climate change such as mangrove replanting

We gain so much from travel and if we are mindful, we can simultaneously give back, touching the lives of underserved and vulnerable groups. There are so many ways to make a difference. Start where you are. Do what you can. Progress over perfection.
