For our first watch of 2025, The Movie Exchange hosts Carolyn and Colin watched Hell of High Water, a modern Western from 2016 that has been on Carolyn's rewatch list for quite some time. Written by one of the cohosts' favourite writers, Taylor Sheridan, and starring Chris Pine, Ben Foster, Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham, this movie is both action packed and moving. With visuals and themes that stick with you long after the credits roll, this movie gets 2 thumbs up from our team. A rare movie that earns its run time, we highly recommend giving it a watch.

This movie is memorable, visually intriguing, and highly rewatchable. The all-star cast includes Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster, Clive Owen, Christopher Plummer, and Willem Dafoe. These powerhouse actors deliver incredible performances that complement the script and add layers to the mystery as it unfolds.

You won't be disappointed whether its your first or fiftieth watch of this Spike Lee film.

033 - Mean Girls

It's October 3rd, which means there is only one movie Carolyn was interested in revisiting this week - 2004's Mean Girls, starring Lindsay Lohan.

Directed by Mark Waters, written by Tina Fey, and produced by Lorne Michaels, this film will long be remembered as one of the greatest teen movies of all time. Alongside Lindsay Lohan, the film stars Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert as "The Plastics", and iconic SNL cast members such as Amy Poehler and Tim Meadows round out the cast.

Mean Girls is still quoted by millennials almost daily, largely due to the dynamic writing and understated delivery between the older and younger cast. It's a near perfect blend of biting commentary on the dynamics of teenage girls, and heartfelt optimism about female friendship.

As we move into the fall and the start of the MLB playoffs, baseball superfan Colin introduced Carolyn to two very different baseball films from 1989 - "Field of Dreams" and "Major League". Our good friend and movie historian Christopher Tobin stopped by with some facts and details about both films, and local comedian Adam Benson pops in to talk about how impactful "Field of Dreams" has been in his own life.

This episode discusses the range we see from sports films - "Field of Dreams" is known for its sentimentality and longevity, while "Major League" is a cult-classic, underdog film packed with joke after joke.

To close out our summer season, Carolyn and Colin wanted to go back 40 years to the summer of 1982, when Steven Spielberg's film E.T. The Extraterrestrial hit the big screens. Known as one of the greatest summer blockbusters of all time, this movie features an unforgettable friendship, and incredible score, and some of the most iconic imagery still referenced in modern pop culture. Friend of the podcast, Christopher Tobin, stopped by to give us an in depth look into the composer John Williams, who is responsible for some of the most popular scores in film history, including this one.

This movie gave both our cohosts an opportunity to re-examine their childhoods and go back to a simpler way of watching a movie, where the story is given more space to breathe and action didn't dominate every frame.

A teenager is given a chance to write for Rolling Stone, and finds himself on the road with an up and coming rock band Stillwater, and experiences first hand everything that goes along with being a rock star. With an unforgettable cast that includes Kate Hudson, Patrick Fugit, Billy Crudup, Jason Lee, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and a soundtrack that captures every moment beautifully, this movie comes highly recommended by our co-hosts.

September is here and it's time to go back to school, so of course, we're talking about Billy Madison! We're joined this week by artist Doug Halliday, and he is the ultimate fan of this film (he claims to have seen it over 100 times!). This is one of Adam Sandler's earliest films at the end of his time on SNL, and has an incredible cast with cameos from Chris Farley and Steve Buscemi.

A cross between a coming of age film and a horror movie, this movie has finally made it's way to 2 400 theatres after being held up in post production for over 2 years, but our team was happy to finally see a final product. With a great cast that includes Maisie Williams, and lots of great Easter Eggs for die hard fans, listen to hear our thoughts (including spoilers) of this movie!

A film with a very specific aesthetic, a very strange soundtrack, and a very large box office income, its a fave favourite from the pre-millennial Batman franchise.

We're back! After taking a week off, Carolyn and Colin are joined this episode by Captain America himself - David Pynn of Out of Time Cosplay! Having played Captain America in the local cosplay scene for years, Dave is a bit of an expert on what makes Steve Rogers worthy of carrying the mantle of Captain America. This episode focuses on Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: Winter Solider, and Captain America: Civil War, and discusses their place in the larger MCU, Chris Evans' performance as Cap, and makes comparisons to the comics.

Susan Kelsey, academic in the field of Women in Filmmaking, joins Carolyn and Colin this week to talk about Mindy Kaling's 2019 film "Late Night". The film stars Emma Thompson, Mindy Kaling, Hugh Dancy, Reid Scott, and John Lithgow, and centres around an aging late night talk show host Katherine Newbury, who worries she may be losing her show and adds a South Asian-American woman to her all white, all male writing staff. This episode brings out a strong conversation about women in filmmaking, sexism in the workplace, and what makes good comedy.

Episode 009 - The French Connection 1 & 2

Colin and Carolyn are joined again this week by their friend and fellow movie enthusiast, Christopher Tobin, for their first double feature review of The French Connection and French Connection 2. Released in 1971 and 1975 respectively, these films are based on a novel by the same name that was influenced by a real case in New York in the 1960's, and two real NYPD detectives. Gene Hackman gives an Oscar winning performance as Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle, and is joined by Roy Schneider as Buddy Russo, as they follow their intuition and try to take down a French kingpin dealing drugs in their city. Popeye travels to France for the sequel, and takes on Alan Charnier on his turf this time.

Directed by Rob Reiner and written by William Goldman, this film brought us an all star cast including Robin Wright, Cary Elwes, Wallace Shawn, Mandy Pantakin, Andre the Giant, Christopher Guest, Billy Crystal and Carol Kane. After finding a cult following almost immediately upon VHS release that has lasted until today, this film has definitely made its mark on meme culture.
