Dr Ash Parton is a paleoenvironmental scientist with interests in the dynamics and periodicity of long-term climate change in drylands, and the potential effects of such changes on human populations. In particular, his research focuses on the Arabian Peninsula and has helped to develop our understanding of early human population movements out of Africa and through the Saharan-Arabian Desert belt. Ash joined Mansfield College, University of Oxford in September 2015, where he became a lecturer in physical geography.

In this podcast, Ash discusses the importance of palaeoclimatology not only to understand our earliest ancestors, but also mapping the evidence of climate change today. Ash also touches on his ongoing research with Simon Underwood and recalls his fondest memories of Oman.

In this episode, we speak with Maha Al-Habsi. Maha graduated from Sultan Qaboos University in 2016 from the Economics and Political Science College. Unsure and not confident as to what her next step was Maha enrolled in a course headed up by Outward Bound Oman. She was then discovered by Mark Evans, the incredible force behind everything that goes on there, and ended up joining the team in January 2018. She began as a business manager and is now head of business development and is now an all-around ambassador of all the work they do.

Elizabeth Davis is an Indian artist in Oman who recently came to the forefront of the Omani art scene. She is the recipient of the National Talent Search Scheme Award, a university topper for her Bachelors & Masters, a Marine Biologist and former banker, she seems to have forayed into various fields before settling down to her one true passion – Painting! From having a fantastic art department in school, she has furthered her artistic career by doing various courses with famous international artists to hone her skills and reach where she is. Last year she was a winner at the ‘Masterpiece Oman’ competition held by the Anglo Omani Society. Having lived in Muscat for almost 30 years, Elizabeth’s work reflects her love for this amazing country, its awe-inspiring landscape and warm, friendly people.

Dr Zahid Al Mandhari is head of Radiation Oncology at Sultan Qaboos Comprehensive Cancer Centre. After graduating the top of his class from Sultan Qaboos University, Dr Al Mandhari decided to focus on Radiation Oncology and started studying at the University of Alberta where he finished his fellowship. Later he joined the Royal Hospital in Oman as a radiation oncologist before his current role at the soon-to-open Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

In this podcast, we explore the development of the Sultan Qaboos Comprehensive Cancer Centre, its future as it plans to open, and the impact it will have on cancer treatment in Oman.

Colonel (Retired) David Bennett played an instrumental role as the UK's In-Country Project Officer for the UK's Defence Hub at Duqm. He has worked in various countries across the Middle East and is highly skilled in project and operations management, particularly, in the international setting. In 2020, David swapped Duqm for Roland's Castle and began managing the beautiful Stansted Park Estate. A few weeks ago the AOS team had the pleasure of travelling down to his estate and recording the following podcast.

Hanan Sultan is currently a master's student at the Royal College of Art studying Jewellery and Metal. She is also a recent graduate of Central Saint Martins with a Bachelor in Jewellery Design. Living between Muscat, Dubai, and London, Hanan is passionate about fine art and fashion and finds that jewellery is the perfect middle ground between the two. Her art and design practices are predominantly centred around cultural identity and the human experience of society in relation to this. She also incorporates traditional and contemporary materials in designing and making jewellery. In this podcast, we discuss her recent Bachelor's collection which is made out of frankincense.

Professor Allen James Fromherz is a historian specializing in the Middle East and the Mediterranean. From 2007 to 2008 he was a Professor at Qatar University and later joined the faculty of Georgia State University where he currently works. Along with research on the Almohad Empire in twelfth-century North Africa and the history of the Mediterranean, Professor Fromherz specialises in the history of the Arabian Gulf. His most recent book Qatar: A Modern History is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of the Gulf.

Mohab Ali Al Hinai is a technology enthusiast with over 17 years of experience in the fields of R&D and technology assessment. He co-founded Sustainable Investments LLC, an Omani firm that focuses on introducing cutting-edge technological innovations in the MENA region with a special focus on food security, energy and health. Mohab started his career by earning a bachelor's degree in Biotechnology from Sultan Qaboos University (SQU). After joining on as a faculty member at SQU, he went on to earn a master's degree in the same field from Northwestern University followed by a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University of Delaware.

After spending 10+ years in academia, Mohab made the transition to industry where he is leading multiple initiatives to help Oman transition into a more sustainable and circular economy. In addition to his academic credentials, Mohab earned a professional certificate in Financial Planning and Analysis from the University of California at Berkeley followed by a certificate in Leading and Building a Culture of Innovation from Harvard University.

In this podcast, AOS speaks with Daniel Newman Professor and Chair of Arabic Studies at the University of Durham (UK). His research and publications have centred on Arabic geographical and travel literature (with a special focus on Arab travellers to Europe in the 19th century) as well as the 19th-century Arab reform movements in Tunisia and Egypt.

In 2009, he was the co-recipient of the World Award of the President of the Republic of Tunisia for Islamic Studies for the book entitled Muslim Women in Law and Society (Routledge, 2007). His research interests also include translation studies, medieval Islamic medicine and Arab food history. His latest book is entitled The Sultan’s Feast. A Fifteenth-century Cookbook, which has been longlisted for the Peter Mackenzie Smith Book Prize 2021. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and Vice-President of the British Association of Teachers of Arabic (BATA).

In this podcast we speak with Richard Muir, a former British Ambassador to Oman (1994-99), about his career and diplomatic experience in Oman. In his career as a diplomat he served in Washington DC and in a number of other Middle East posts including as Ambassador to Kuwait. In London before taking up his post in Oman he was a member of the Foreign Office Board of Management and Chief Inspector of the Diplomatic Service.

Richard was Chairman of the Society from 2004 to 2012 since when he has been a Vice President. He is currently Director of the Altajir Trust in London, offering grants and scholarships and producing among other publications a history of the Gulf States: ‘The Emergence of the Gulf States’. He is also Chairman of the Sir William Luce Memorial Fund based at Durham University which focuses on issues of governance in the Gulf States and Sudan.

Abdullah Al Alawi is currently the Learning Programme Designer at YouThinkers and is the writer of two plays: Hot Potato and Omaniyya Enthroned. Hot Potato is a play focusing on a single street in Victorian England filled with characters from the periphery of society. Their humour helps them brave their position in society until the Mayor visits and the narrator switches the roles of the characters for the play’s conclusion. Omaniyaa Enthroned tells the story of an intelligent woman whose years of learning help her throw off the oppressive rule of the Portuguese in Oman and liberate Omanis from the cruelties of colonial occupation. In this podcast, we dive into these plays as well as discuss the current and future state of playwriting in Oman and the modern world.

Arabella Dorman is an award winning, internationally renowned artist and one of Britain’s leading portrait painters. Arabella’s work explores the realities of conflict today, its immediate impacts and long-term consequences.

She worked as an officially accredited war artist in Iraq and Afghanistan for over a decade, and in more recent years in Palestine, Gaza, Lebanon and Syria. Arabella enjoys a prominent reputation as a public speaker, fundraiser, and has recently been awarded winner of the Oman Masterpiece 2021. She was listed as one of BBC’s Top 100 Women and Salt Magazine’s 100 Most Inspiring Women. S3 EP5: CI Coaching at PDO & Omani Rare Genetic Disorders

Aisha Said Al Shukaili is a Senior Continuous Improvement (CI) coach at Petroleum Development of Oman (PDO). Aisha began her CI career in 2015, and since she has become the first accredited CI coach in PDO and the first female in PDO to be awarded the Six Sigma Black Belt certification.

Prior to her career in the petroleum industry, Aisha worked as a Medical Physicist in the radiotherapy department at The Royal Hospital (Oman) for one and half years, after graduating from Sultan Qaboos University with a BSc in Physics and Medical Physics.

Before joining the CI function, Aisha was working in PDO as a petroleum engineer in the Petrophysics field for 7 years.

Franziska Fay is a postdoctoral researcher at the Research Centre Normative Orders at the University of Frankfurt and from October to December 2020 she was a visiting research fellow at Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) on the Oman Grant sponsored by the Sultan Qaboos Higher Centre for Culture and Science.

Her research focuses on children and young people, politics, and belonging in Swahili-speaking contexts. Her first book “Disputing Discipline: Child Protection, Punishment and Piety in Zanzibar Schools” will be published by Rutgers University Press in April 2021. Regionally she works in Zanzibar, along the Swahili coast of Tanzania and Kenya, as well as in Oman.

She has recently started to work on a new book project, “Living with Absence: Youth Identity and Belonging and the ‘Zanzibar Diaspora’” that foregrounds second and third generation Zanzibari diasporans’ contemporary translocal identity formation. At ZMO, and in the context of this project, she is currently focusing on “Young Omani Swahili-speakers and the Zanzibar Diaspora” to better understand their notions of citizenship, absence and belonging on the diasporic spectrum between the Swahili Coast and Oman.

Description will be: This weeks podcast is in partnership with PDO. Dr Sultan Shidhani joined PDO in 1989 after graduating from the University of Arizona (USA) with a BSc. in Electrical Engineering. Sultan also holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the Open University (UK) and a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) from the University of Liverpool (UK). After working as a wellsite petroleum engineer for some time, Sultan then became a reservoir engineer first in Marmul and then moved to Yibal. In 1996, Sultan went on a cross-posting assignment in Brunei Shell and worked as a reservoir engineer for the major and very mature Seria and Land fields. Sultan returned to PDO in early 2000 and assumed the role of reservoir engineering section head for the Qarn Alam area and the Gas Asset. In 2003, Sultan assumed the Gas Petroleum Engineering Manager role and contributed to the major gas developments that enabled the significant growth in supply needed to meet the ever-increasing gas demands. In 2010, Sultan was appointed as the Study Centre Manager where he led reshaping and advancing the field development and hydrocarbon maturation works and approaches. Five years later, Sultan assumed the Oil South Petroleum Engineering Manager role, in which he managed the largest subsurface development portfolio in PDO and supported realizing significant potentials. In 2019, Sultan was appointed as PDO’s Petroleum Engineering Function Director. In his current role, Sultan is responsible for the Company’s capabilities in all petroleum engineering disciplines, including reservoir engineering, petrophysics, production geosciences, production technology and production chemistry, including setting standards, processes and tools to support. Sultan is active in supporting community and professional works. He served in the Board of Al Mudhaibi Sport and Cultural Club in the 1990s, was President of the Oman Society of Engineers-OSE (1998-2011), and a member of a number of community committees and initiatives in Al Mudhaibi and Muscat. With such an extensive career we are honoured that we can share Dr Sultan's story as well as enlighten and encourage future engineers.

Before establishing The Media Centre llc (TMC) and WAF News (as a news service by TMC), Fatma was Reuters’ correspondent in Oman. She is one of the most followed journalists on social media in Oman and is considered a reliable source of news and information. In 2017, Fatma was recognised as one of the top influencers by Oman’s National Youth Committee.

In January 2018, al-Arimi started The Media Centre as an Oman-based information & news hub, with focus on local news, reports and analysis of current economic and social matters.

Award-winning translator Sawad Hussain talks about bringing Arabic books to life in English, the transgender narrative in Oman’s “The Shadow of Hermaphroditus”, and which Western misconceptions she’s seeking to challenge around the Arabic-speaking world - from the ill-informed negative connotations of “Allah Akbar” to the presence of queer characters.

Sawad Hussain is the winner of two English PEN Translates Awards. She co-teaches a workshop on translating Arabic comics at UK secondary schools via the collective 'Shadow Heroes'. Her most recent translation is the Palestinian resistance novella Passage to the Plaza by Sahar Khalifeh (shortlisted for the 2020 Palestine Book Awards), and she is currently translating two Omani books: The Shadow of Hermaphroditus by Badriyya al-Badri and Badria al-Shihi‘s Circling the Embers (working title). Kamilya’s background in education spans over 20 years. Her parents moved from Oman to Canada and later to the US as practising physicians. She describes her parents are her heroes. “They are the ideal human beings, kind, brilliant souls that dedicated their lives to helping people get better. Not only did they practise medicine and cure diseases but they wanted their practice to continue and they accomplished this through teaching young doctors how to be great ones.”

She went on to complete her bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Biology. At her time of studying she was unsure of her future and all she knew is that she did not want to be a doctor. It was her now husband who encouraged her to change paths and become a teacher, he expressed how he felt education was most noble of professions and suggested she consider teaching. After her graduation Kamilya went on to obtain her teaching degree. She was a science and math teacher in Austin Independent School District (AISD). She was then handpicked to be a part of a leadership programme which meant attending a two-year programme at the University of Texas in Austin to obtain her Master’s degree in Educational Administration. During her two years at UT she got the opportunity to work as an assistant superintendent of Middle Schools. She went on to become the Vice Principal of a middle school of 2000 students and then as a Principal of an elementary (primary) school in Austin, Texas.

She returned to Oman in 2008 and continued her career as Principal at Knowledge Gate International School, Al Hail, Oman & as an Educational Consultant & Director of Operations at Teclution Int’l Seeb Systems. As of 2020 Kamilya has now become the head teacher for New World International School that has opened in Muscat.

Professor Yusra Mouzughi is the Vice-Chancellor at Muscat University. The Vice-Chancellor role involves creating the strategic vision and leading the team to achieve the objectives of Muscat University in a growing and fiercely competitive higher education landscape. Notably, she is also the first female head of a University in Oman. Under her leadership, Muscat University has grown in staff and student numbers and quickly secured a reputation for quality and rigour.

Professor Mouzughi worked for over 14 years in the UK higher education sector, and developed a cross disciplinary research profile spanning knowledge sharing and the sustainability agenda. She received her PhD in Knowledge Management from Liverpool John Moores University. Professor Mouzughi has since supervised many Doctoral theses in the broad management area, has numerous publications in the field and is an invited keynote speaker at many international conferences.

Dr Fatma Al Hajri explains behavioural insights, or 'nudge' science, and the exciting new developments planned in Oman. The world's first 'Nudge Unit' was established in the UK in 2010 and its expansion to Oman means facing novel endeavours and targeting different behaviours.
Fatma has a PhD in Educational Assessment and Evaluation from the University of Edinburgh (in 2013). She is currently the Head of the Steering Committee of Behavioural Economics in Oman and works in Petroleum Development Oman as an In Country Value Assurance Lead. Fatma has been a member of Oman Vision 2040 and has been working for the Ministry of Higher Education in several positions from Assistant Professor in foundation programmes to the Manager of Market Research Unit. She has published a number of articles in international educational journals.

HH Sayyida Tania bint Shabib Al Said holds a BSc in Marine and Freshwater Biology and a Diploma in Early Childhood Education. In 2004, Sayyida Tania, in conjunction with other founding members, established the only non-government organisation in Oman dedicated to preserving the environment, the Environment Society of Oman (ESO). ESO’s mission is to help conserve and protect the environment in Oman and influence environmentally sustainable behaviour through education, awareness and conservation. Sayyida Tania has served as the President of the board of directors of ESO since its inception and is an active member of the team. Sayyida Tania initiated the Say No to Plastic Bags Campaign, organises the annual ESO fundraising ball as well as the annual corporate ECO BOWL competition. She represents ESO in the media and helps with fundraising initiatives. Her primary focus this summer has been to support vital fundraising initiatives, including ESO’s Environmental Big Night In, a virtual fundraising event being held on 24th August.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes is a British explorer and expedition leader whose feats include hover-crafting over the Nile, travelling longitudinally around the globe and completing the Sahara’s Marathon Des Sables aged 71.
Ran’s ventures in Oman began in the 60s when he served in the Sultan’s Armed Forces in the Dhofar Rebellion. Over subsequent decades, Ran returned to Oman frequently to search for “Atlantis of the Sands”, or the legendary lost frankincense city of Ubar, which he remarkably found in 1992. EP9: Growing Conservation in Oman with Dr Nigel Winser

Dr Nigel Winser is a United Kingdom-based conservation advocate who has devoted much of his career to the conservation and environmental issues that face Oman, since his first venture here in 1985/86, for the highly acclaimed Wahiba Sands Sea Project. He has worked at the Royal Geographical Society on field science related activities for 29 years, joining as a volunteer studying the forests of Sarawak and going on to become its Deputy Director.
Nigel, along with Dr Dutton, has also arranged and hosted the Oman Natural Heritage Lectures at the Royal Geographical Society in London over the last two years to universal acclaim.

EP7: The life of Dr Jayakar. A British Agency Surgeon in Muscat

Charlie Sammut is a Political Counsellor at the British Embassy in Muscat. During his time in Oman, he developed a fascination with the life and times of Dr Atmaram Sadashiva Grandin Jayakar, the longest-serving Agency Surgeon in Muscat from 1873-1900. Dr Jayakar is a remarkable character in the annals of the Omani-British friendship. He was an accomplished zoologist, naturalist and linguist and stood in as the Political Agent numerous times during this period. His story deserves the world’s attention.

Mark Evans is the Executive Director of Outward Bound Oman. In 2016, starting from Salalah, Mark and two Omani companions set out on a 49 day expedition to cross Arabia’s Empty Quarter, in the footsteps of explorer Bertram Thomas. Mark had led numerous expeditions to the high Arctic, including a year-long project that included four months of total darkness on the Norwegian Archipelago, Svalbard. In this Podcast, Mark explores what lessons can be learnt from his experiences and how they can be applied to the COVID-19 pandemic.

EP5: Mental Health in Oman with HH Sayyida Basma Al Said

Her Highness Sayyida Basma Al Said is a pioneering mental health advocate in the Sultanate of Oman with over 17 years of experience. She founded the ‘Whispers of Serenity’ Clinic in 2011 after working at Sultan Qaboos University for 11 years. She is passionate about raising awareness of mental health, breaking down barriers and challenging stereotypes and taboos. Her expertise covers group counselling, couples counselling, relaxation and meditation, art and drama therapy, counselling for abuse and maltreatment survivors, family counselling, sexology, and hypnosis. Al Said's long and successful career is recognized across Oman and the Middle East, and she has received several awards honouring her contributions to the mental health sector.

EP4: Wild Oman with Violet Astor

Violet Astor is a UK based conservation artist who produces large and detailed charcoal drawings combined with natural materials found in the environment of her subjects. Her special interest is travelling to the wild corners of the planet to collaborate with wildlife conservation projects. Her aim is to draw endangered species to raise awareness and funding to support their survival. Violet is a self-taught artist who discovered drawing during the years she was chronically ill with Lyme Disease, which in turn became an integral part of her healing.

EP2: A Few Observations on Omani-Yemeni Relations since the 1960s with Helen Lackner

Helen Lackner has worked as a consultant in social aspects of rural development in over thirty countries in the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Europe. She has spent the past four decades researching Yemen, working in the country for fifteen years. Lackner is currently Associate Researcher at the London Middle East Institute at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and was the 2016 Sir William Luce Fellow at Durham University. The editor of Journal of the British-Yemeni Society, she is also a regular contributor to Oxford Analytica’s briefs and openDemocracy. Her publications include Yemen in Crisis: Autocracy, Neo-Liberalism and the Disintegration of a State and Why Yemen Matters: A Society in Transition (editor).

The podcasts outline the transformations in relations between the Sultanate of Oman and the different Yemeni states from 1960, focusing on the internal and international reasons for the changes on both sides.

The Good Neighbour: A Commemorative Lecture on the Life of Sultan Qaboos

Jeremy Jones is Senior Associate Member at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies and was previously a Research Fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. He has co-authored two books about Oman: Oman, Culture and Diplomacy (Edinburgh 2012) and A History of Modern Oman (Cambridge 2015). He has also consulted for the Omani government since the 1980s.

The lecture reflects upon the life and reign of the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said and the unparalleled advances it has had on Oman’s society as well as the vital influence he had in promoting the stability of the Gulf region.

EP 1: UTMB Oman Winner and Ultra Marathon Runner Eoin Keith

The Society was delighted to welcome Eoin Keith to discuss his phenomenal win in the 170km UTMB Oman 2019 race, finishing in a time of 36 hours and 4 minutes. To win a UTMB race is at the top of every ultrarunners bucket list and to hear the story of his race first-hand was a real privilege.
