super talented Kelsey Painter – otherwise known as “The VO Opossum”!!
I’m pretty sure crossed paths with Kelsey several years ago at an online event - but only really had the chance to have real conversation with her and work with
her in my mastery session on Characters that I hosted with Nate Begle this
past November at MAVO2025! She’s hilarious and so talented!!

Kelsey’s University and early professional background is in classical and
contemporary theatre, through which she developed expert script analysis
skills and explored a vast spread of different acting techniques and
approaches. Kelsey describes herself as a “one of a kind, out of left field,
funky weirdo, who is great for your environment (aka project)!” She brings
sparkle and grit to every character she voices regardless of size, shape or
galactic origin. Kelsey has a lot of success in interactive projects such as
video games and animation projects.

Happy 4th!! I hope you all have a wonderful and fun day with friends and family!! In this episode, I talk about the importance of monologues and how they fit into the VO world. I recently talk a class about this called, "Exploring Character Depth" and it was a really great one!! Don't let the idea of monologues intimidate you. With enough practice, they will help you to improve your acting skills and auditioning skills.

I also give a fast update on MAVO2025 because it's only about 4 months away now and it's getting pretty exciting! The schedule is a work in progress - as it always is at this point in the planning process. But my goal is to have it done and released by the end of July or very beginning of August so you guys can start planning out your weekend of sessions!!! But you've gotta have a ticket to be there, so stop procrastinating and just go buy it! You know you don't want to miss it! It's our 10 year anniversary event!! What could be more epic than that!!!? GO!!! DO IT NOW!!!!!

I know I’m a little late to the game here – but Happy New Year!!! 2025 is off
to a weird start! There’s not really any other way to put it! It’s been busy
and crazy as usual, but I just feel like the world is in a strange place right
now. I don’t know about you guys, but I have weeks where I get like 50
auditions and then the next week only 4!! It seems to be tougher to get a
call back lately too! Time to up my skills I guess!! I really felt like if I was
going to get myself out of this kind of funk I’ve been in lately, I needed to
get advice from industry people that know what’s really happening!!

My special guest today is Kelly Moscinski!

Kelly is the Owner and Head of Casting at "The Voicecaster" – the oldest
voiceover casting house in the country, established in 1975! With about 20
years of experience in VO and even more in entertainment, Kelly casts and
directs all things voiceover… PLUS she’s a demo producer and coach.
Kelly has owned "The Voicecaster" since 2013 and took over as the
company’s 3 rd owner. She has a bachelor’s degree in Theatre with a Focus
in Directing and a master’s degree in English with a Focus in Creative
Writing.
When Kelly is not busy at the studio, she’s enjoying adventures with her
husband and their two kids, listening to audiobooks, or re-organizing the
house!

BUT, I ALSO chat about how this relates to the VO world and how the song "Defying Gravity" changed my whole way of thinking about the MAVO conference and about many things in my life. It's a very powerful song with a powerful message. This is a fun, short episode to wrap up 2024!!

MAVO2024 was a wonderful event!! If you missed it, this is a great way to find out what you missed! If you were there, I think you'll enjoy reliving the memories!

One very important thing I forgot to mention in my recap is that Tim Friedlander's Keynote was absolutely EPIC!!! He is such an inspiring guy! He talked about how many failures he's had to go through to get to where he is today. It was motivating, so well done and he absolutely accomplished the goal of inspiring everyone at the event. He was by far one of the best Keynotes we've ever had! If you guys aren't members of NAVA yet, please go join today!!!

I also didn't talk about this in the episode, but Everett Oliver hosted our first ever MAVO Teen program on Saturday of the event and it went really well! My daughter Chloe attended and she said it was really fun and she learned a lot!! I don't know if we will do it in 2025, but it was a good experience for those who attended this year!

To go into great detail about every session at the event would've taken hours, so I just tried to hit some of the highlights in this episode. My opening remarks are in here too, so if you missed those, I hope you'll feel inspired when you listen!!

We have one more episode coming up in another week or so that will wrap up our shows for 2024. Then we will resume in January 2025, but it will still be Season 5!!

Isabella “Izzy” Tugman is a professional Voice-Over Artist, Actor, Singer, and Film Producer based out of Phoenix, AZ. She has also lived and worked in the Los Angeles, New York City, Austin, and Kansas City markets.

Izzy has a Bachelors Degree in Music from Thomas Edison State University. In addition, she is a graduate of a rigorous two-year college performing arts program from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) in Los Angeles. She also spent two years as a Vocal Performance major at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), where she studied to be an opera singer.

Having spent a lifetime acting and singing on the stage, in front of the camera, and behind the microphone, a career in voice-over harmoniously blends her talents for voice, acting, story-telling, and language.

Isabella is an incredibly hard-working individual who is committed to quality. She works consistently to improve on her talents and her business while maintaining a strong sense of integrity and a positive attitude.

When she’s not pursuing her career goals, Izzy loves to sing, dance, read, practice yoga, play video games, travel, and indulge in spicy foods. An animal lover, she has two cats and two small dogs that might as well be cats.

Think outside the box. How many times in your life have you been told to do that?!! We are living in a world now where creating your own content has become the norm. Figuring out how to build followers, collab with each other and learn to thrive in this world are things we are always thinking about. My Special guest today - Brittany Luberda, is an extremely talented singer, actress, and writer from New Orleans, Louisiana. I’m not sure how long it’s been now, but I saw some of Brittany’s singing videos on Instagram and was really impressed. She has a beautiful voice and is so talented! Brittany is currently making one woman videos of all the songs from the musical “The Music Man.” She’s the host of “Coffee Break with Brittany” which takes place on Fridays on Instagram. These sessions are a chance for her to tell her followers what’s happening but also to help connect and share positivity. She has always dreamed of being on Broadway and as soon as it re-opens, I’m sure she’ll be landing roles like crazy!

My very first teaching job was at a school called “Vernon-Verona- Sherrill High School” in Verona, NY. For those who are unfamiliar with that area of NY, it’s pretty close to Syracuse. There were about 800 students total, I was 22 years old and pretty fresh out of college! My Seniors that year were only 4 years younger than me and it was definitely a wonderful time in my life. Many of the students that I taught during my 3 years at that school are my friends now to this day!! There wasn’t a very big age difference and since it was my first full-time teaching job, I learned a lot and they helped me through it!! So, it’s with great excitement that I tell you about my special guest today – because he’s a former French student of mine from that first school I taught at in Central NY!
Aaron Dodge has been on a path to be the center of attention his whole life. I remember his great energy that he always had in my French class and now he is using that great, positive energy to move forward in life, to seek out his dreams and to make them into realities. Aaron is a host/MC for sporting, fitness and non-profit events, has over 10 years experience managing live sporting events (like NBA, WNBA, Triathlon), and he is a brand influencer. He is a TikTok star, comedian, great dancer and all-around nice guy.

Coffee, comedy, positivity and kindness! These are a few of the things I love the most! Today on the show, I’ll be talking with two people that are super pros when it comes to coffee, acting, comedy and being kind, compassionate people. Daniella Monet is an actress best known for her work on the Nickelodeon show “Victorious” where she played the hilarious role of Trina Vega! Daniella has been in various other great tv shows and movies and is seriously talented when it comes to physical comedy and improv, throwing herself into each role with passion and enthusiasm! She is also an animal lover, fitness fanatic, vegan foodie, entrepreneur, Mom to adorable Gio James, and the fiancée of our other great guest today Andrew Gardner. Andrew Gardner is the founder of “Drew Coffee”, Dad to Gio James and an all-around nice guy!! I was able to get in on the first batch of “Drew Coffee” that came out and I can tell you – as an official coffee snob, that it’s fantastic!! It’s smooth, not bitter and has great flavor. When you open the great, clean white package, the awesome aroma of the delicious coffee hits your nose and it’s exciting!! Together, Daniella and Andrew host their great podcast called “Adulting like a Mother Father” where they talk about parenting, relationships, and they have guests on the show too!
In this interview, we chat about Daniella's time on "Victorious", her great improv skills, and how being a Mom has changed her life. Her fiancé, Andrew Gardner is the owner/founder of "Drew Coffee" so I had the chance to ask him about how his love for coffee started, what it takes to make the perfect espresso and what his future plans are for his company. These two are expecting a baby girl any day now, so we talked a bit about parenting and how they are feeling about adding this new addtion to their family soon!

We’re kicking off season 2 with a superstar talent that I met a few years ago on Twitter.

Chris Newman is an actor and producer, known for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), The Five-Year Engagement (2012) and Love and Honor(2013).

Chris was born and grew up in Troy, Michigan. Always performing for friends but otherwise shy, he began his acting career in college, on a dare. Soon, Chris caught "the acting bug" and never looked back, starring in productions of "Brighton Beach Memoirs", "Agatha Christie's Mousetrap" and Neil Simon's "The Good Doctor". He would later go on to play Stanley Kowalski in "A Streetcar Named Desire" and Lt. Daniel Kaffee in "A Few Good Men", to name a few.

Following his success in theatre, Chris turned his attention to film and studied at the Dramatic Arts Studio, under the tutelage of Christopher Bondy. Chris earned roles in the films I already mentioned, as well as Solomon and Injustice For All.

Chris and I chat about his acting career, how to stay balanced with work and family, superpowers and more!!! You definitely won't want to miss this episode!

Let me tell you about my special guest today – Terry Dubbs! Terry comes by her down to earth sound honestly. She lives in the Midwest, on a farm raising goats with her husband and two dogs.

Her honest sound gets her booked over and over again from Commercial to Political ads, to Telephony and Narration. Her passion for voice over started long before she ever started coaching with some of the industries top coaches. She lent her voice to independent film projects and was constantly asked to record corporate voice mail messages for companies she worked for. In about 2012, I attended my first VO conference in Toronto. I decided to attend after I had a coaching intensive with superstar puppeteer & actor John Tartaglia in NYC. Long story short, I wanted to see if I could pursue my dream of being on “Sesame Street” -and I thought John could possibly help. It was a great session, but about an hour into it, I realized that puppeteering is a skillset that takes a lot of time and training and that it might already be too late in my life to learn and master it. So, John suggested that I stick to VO and referred me to Sunday Muse – who just happens to be my special guest today!! I had the chance to meet Sunday at that first VO conference I ever attended in Toronto because she was a guest speaker! Shortly after that, I took some animation VO coaching sessions with her and the rest is history!!

Sunday Muse is the Founder/Creative Manager & Inspiratrice of Great Big Voices. She excels in helping people manifest their dreams into reality and communicate authentically to the world. In New Jersey he hosted, wrote and produced a syndicated film review radio program called All That Glitters that aired on WCTC and Magic 98.3.

In Part 1 of this episode of "Live with Squacky", professional voice actress and podcast host, Val Kelly chats with Liz de Nesnera. Liz is a super pro when it comes to booking VO work in two languages! She grew up in a multi-lingual family, with parents that were both native French speakers. Liz brings her years of experience working at the French embassy trade office, then as a radio station Copywriter/Production Director, and ultimately corporate recording studio Producer/Casting Director up to the mic. She records phone system prompts, medical and technical narrations, eLearning modules, explainer videos, as well as, of course, TV and radio commercials – in both English and French. Liz is extremely business savvy and talented.
