Brian is a paramedic who has worked 911 EMS, flight, and critical care transport, including patients who are at end of life and donating organs, and even the organs themselves. After hearing the experience that Anthony and Jessica DeCilio went through with their daughter's end of life care he graciously offered to shed light on how the process of organ donation and procurement usually works. 

We talk about how someone becomes an organ donor, how the DMV process is far from providing the "informed" part of informed consent, how brain death is determined clinically, how organ procurement occurs across the United States and most of the western world, the importance of talking with your loved ones about your wishes for end of life care early on, and where to find the information to help you make the best decisions for you when the inevitable occurs.

After a choking incident caused cardiac arrest Jessica and Anthony's daughter, Caitlyn, was in the ICU on life support. Making a tragic situation all the more difficult were representatives from an organ donation company pressuring these heart broken parents to allow the hospital to induce cardiac death so that their daughter's organs could be harvested, because Caitlyn had elected to be an organ donor when obtaining her driver's license as a teenager. 

Jessica and Anthony share their troubling story in an effort to bring transparency to a situation that nobody who checks that box as a teenager could ever imagine happening, and how they're working with state legislators to make sure that when future donors give consent that they're actually informed about what they're consenting to, and what the process actually entails for those we love after we pass.

As more women are getting involved in extreme sports more categories are needed for them to compete at different skill levels. Amanda is the 2023 downhill mountain biking category 1 national champion and she tells me about the need for another category in the Eastern States Cup where women like her can race competitively without dominating the amateur league and without becoming discouraged by big losses in the pro league.

My friend Jaci went looking for healthy vegetable recipes in vegan groups and quickly noticed many of the foods that were recommending were full of processed chemicals, sugars, and meat substitutes. When she offered healthier substitutes she received push back from the group and was told "Veganism isn't about health."

Should cartoon mermaids have realistic body dimensions? What is realistic? While having a thin waist may be a fantasy for some, others fantasize about gaining healthy weight. Sarah tells us about her struggles with body image and her experiences with body positivity groups and how they've been ideologically captured by the notion that you can be healthy at any size, even morbidly obese. We discuss the nuances of what healthy is, what it certainly isn't, and why standardizing what "realistic" proportions looks like leaves a lot of people out of the picture.

Avi and I started our EMS careers at the same time a decade ago. We've seen and experienced lots of change in our agencies and the profession as a whole during that time. Armando Rivas was a paramedic and nurse in Venezuela before political turmoil and violence between the government and it's citizens drove him to seek asylum in the United States. We talk about the brutal communistic policies that propelled his home to civil unrest and shooting in the streets, evading pirates in the Amazon with a newborn's family and the fulfillment he's found in continuing his passion of helping others as a firefighter/paramedic in Central Florida.

One of my best friends Carlos and I started playing D&D last year and we are hooked. I was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 31, after desperately seeking treatment options for depression episodes I couldn't seem to control or have success mitigating on my own, or even with peer support. When my buddy and previous guest on the podcast Chauncey told me that he wanted to talk with me about The Social Dilemma I said "Tell me when!" Today I am excited to share a conversation I had with my lifelong best friend James Drew Stanley. We grew up together in a swampy little dirt road town north of Orlando and we've remained tight throughout the years. Drew has worked for Disney and other companies as a professional dancer/entertainer for most of his life and spent much of the last two years working for Disney Tokyo. His second contract ended early as the COVID-19 pandemic began spreading across the world. He gives us an inside look at Disney entertainment,  what Japanese culture is like, what he felt as an American visiting Hiroshima and what it's like being a professional performer in a time when public performances have nearly ground to a halt, just to name a few topics we cover. This is the first in-person conversation I've had for the show since the pandemic began so there's some growing pains associated with me re-learning the ropes of the technical side (like making sure my guest's mic is actually turned on before we get halfway through the conversation) and trying to record video at the same time (video will be released later this afternoon, I have to spend more time editing it together after work today) but overall the sound quality is decent for the first half and great for the second half, and it doesn't diminish the quality of the conversation at all. Fox 35 (and I) evaluate the recent data reported to the Florida DOH regarding positive COVID-19 tests, and why many (like Orlando Health) reported 100% positive test rates but when contacted directly state the true percentage of positive rates is 9.4%.

I've been agonizing about how to approach the current state of affairs in the United States. I've spent week pouring over data, stats, listening to experts and commentators, trying to find "answers" and the more I look the less sure I am of anything besides this conversation is far more nuanced than I thought. I do know that not many are offering solutions to the problem of police brutality and abuse of power, or proposing ways to unite our communities instead of divide them. A philosophical razor is a principle or rule of thumb that allows one to eliminate ("shave off") unlikely explanations for a phenomenon. Examples of this include Occam's razor: The simplest explanation is often the correct one, and Hanlon's razor: Do not attribute to malice that which can be better explained by stupidity. 

Well now I'm introducing Tindel's razor: Don't assume you know someone based on their appearance or beliefs, and never assume they can't teach you something of value. 

Listening to people tell their stories on podcasts has inspired me to keep going during some of my darkest times battling with mental health. I want to create a platform where I can help others tell their stories in the hopes somebody will listen and get the same inspiration I did when they need it most. 

This is just a quick introduction and test of my recording software/equipment, I'm figuring this out as I go and I'd appreciate feedback and advice. Thank you, and I hope you'll enjoy the episodes to come!
