Cat Discianni is the co-owner and head instructor of jiu jitsu at New Asgard Martial Arts alongside of her husband and she is a Tac Team Black Belt under Paramount BJJ. Cat enjoys competing and coaching all people in jiu jitsu, especially women and started her teaching career as the women’s class jiu jitsu instructor at Paramount as a blue belt. She holds multiple notable competitive accolades including being a 3x No Gi World Champion and a No Gi Pan American Champion. She also has a full time job as the Director of Nursing at an assisted living facility. She can be found playing with her pet skunk and dog in her free time.

Champions in Life w/ Alexa Yanes

Alexa Yanes is the Founder of Open Guard Collective (formerly the Groundwork Foundation) and a driving force behind its mission to create meaningful, community-driven impact through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, education, and global outreach.
With over a decade of training, Alexa has competed professionally at the highest levels of the sport around the world. Her accomplishments at black belt include winning the 2024 IBJJF Pan American Championship, reaching the finals of the Abu Dhabi World Pro, and earning multiple Abu Dhabi Grand Slam titles, among many other podium finishes. She has competed, refereed, and worked events at the sport’s most elite levels, giving her a deep, well-rounded understanding of Jiu-Jitsu both on and off the mat.
Beyond competition, Alexa has taught seminars internationally, sharing her technical knowledge and competitive experience with athletes across different countries and cultures. She has also worked extensively in Jiu-Jitsu and MMA media, event operations, and brand partnerships, contributing to promotion, storytelling, and community engagement within the combat sports world.
Based in Las Vegas, Nevada, Alexa trains alongside championship-level professionals and remains embedded in one of the world’s most competitive combat sports hubs.

Next Gen w/ Michelle Marciniak

Michelle Marciniak is 14 years old yellow-white belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, out of Las Vegas. She began training jiu jitsu when she was 9 years old. Toward the end of 2023, her and her brother began training at Diamond Grappling Academy where they currently train today. Around the same time, she started getting more serious about her competition. In addition to all the local tournaments, they started traveling for superfights and many of the larger national tournaments, such as ADCC and IBJJF. Recently she started to wrestle as well. Throughout this wrestling season, which was her first, she still consistently trained and competed in BJJ. Now, that season has ended, and her competitions will be more jiu-jitsu/grappling focused once again. She is also a full time student who plays cello in her school’s orchestra. She is so grateful for the opportunities she has had so far that got her to where she is today.

Emily Kwok is a multiple-time IBJJF champion in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, an early veteran of women’s MMA, and one of the sport’s pioneering female athletes. A school owner and head instructor at Princeton BJJ, she brings over two decades of experience on and off the mat. Emily has been a driving force in creating space for women in the sport — co-founding Groundswell Grappling Concepts in 2008 as the first all-female BJJ camp, becoming one of the first women featured in BJJ instructionals , and continuing to organize women’s camps and gatherings that have helped shape the community over the years. Kendall Reusing is a 3x IBJJF NoGi Black Belt World Champion, 2024 ADCC bronze medalist, 4x USA Wrestling National Champion, and an 8x IBJJF World Champion at all belt levels overall. She is also the co-owner of 4 Gracie Barra Jiu Jitsu academies, a worldwide seminar and camp facilitator, a podcast host of her show, Get A Grip, and a combat sports commentator and interviewer for both IBJJF and FloGrappling.

Since then, I've placed third in adult no-gi worlds in 2023 and second in 2024. I have achieved my second championship at Pans under master one, once in 2019 and another in 2023. I would describe my grappling style as classic and very pressure-oriented. My future goals include winning gold at no-gi worlds this year, as well as winning trials in the years to come. The ultimate goal though---bringing more little girls and women into the sport and providing a female mentor to upcoming athletes.”

Kaloni Elvis-Marie Brown (nick name Kk) has been training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for nine years since the age six. She began her Jiu Jitsu journey when her mom took her and her younger brother Ludah to try Brazilian Jiu Jitsu out and Kk instantly fell in love with it. For the past seven years she has trained under Kim Terra at UFC Gym in Hilo, Hawai’i..

She is a 4x IBJJF Pan American champion and ADCC No Gi. Youth World champion. In 2024 Kk traveled by herself to Miami to train with Alpha Miami Grappling under Carlos Sainz and compete no gi in both Florida and Texas. She has flown over 80,000 miles to compete.

This January she will be making her IBJJF Euros debut at blue belt along side her instructor Kim Terra and teammate Moana. Her goal going into 2025 is to win grand slam. In addition to BJJ she wrestles at Hilo high and won officials this year as a freshman. She is projected to be 4x state champion.

"He opened the gym because he has always been a huge martial arts nerd and so that my sister and I had a place to learn how to defend ourselves, especially because we were petite females, and he was always hearing stories of kids being bullied. My mom supported us through this because she always wanted us to have healthy self-esteems and be able to protect ourselves. When I first started Jiu Jitu I only liked training and didn’t really like to compete, but then I got the competition bug, and now I love challenging myself and competing all over the country."

Joslyn Molina started doing jiujitsu when she was 5/6yrs old. She competed in her first Pankids in 2020 in California. She is a 3x gold pan champ now going for her 4th gold this year. She has won 7 Jitz Kings Kids superfights, 1 fight 2 win, 1 submission hunter pro. She just start competing at ADCC in June 2023 and has won multiple times in her division. She also started competing in the women’s bracket when she was 10 . Since then she has challenged herself with doing the teens brackets and women’s brackets or superfights whenever she can.

This week, Shama sits down with Landrie Joseph

Landrie began her jiu jitsu journey in March of 2015, and continued her training under professor Bruno Mendes with Soul Fighters Martial Arts Training Center in Allen Texas.
Landrie began competing at 5.5 and won Pan Kids at the young age of 7! She has stayed on the competition scene throughout the years earning two more silver Medals at Pan kids in 2020 and 2021.
Landrie has enjoyed doing super fights with Fight 2 Win and Submission Hunter pro winning several at each venue.
Most recently, she competed in the ADCC open in Austin earning a double silver. She is looking forward to doing more on the ADCC platform in 2024.

In the last year, Landrie started helping teach the kids class at her academy, and this quickly became one of her favorite part of her jiu jitsu journey.
She is currently 13 years old and a green white belt.
She lives in McKinney Texas with her mom and dad and three dogs. Landrie currently attends McKinney Christian Academy and also plays Basketball and Softball.

This week, Shama sits down with Divana Sandoval AKA “Divana The Beast”, a 12 years old and currently a yellow/black belt training out of GFTeam Orange, CA.

Divana is extremely active and loves any sports she comes across but most she loves God! Divana takes sports seriously and is very competitive. She participates in Jiu-jitsu, Wrestling, Muay Thai, Boxing while in school she participates in practically every sport. Divana beat the entire school while a 6th grader in the most pushups (Jr & High School) during state testing! She also loves to hike, ride bikes, rollerblade, you name it! If she has an opportunity to go to the gym with her older sister, she’s all for it.

Divana’s been training Jiu-jitsu for about 5 years and competing for about the same time. Divana has multiple championships in the following: 4 x Gi & No Gi SJJIF Worlds, 2 x IBJJF Pan Kids, 2 x IBJJF Con Kids, 4 consecutive years JJWL Season Champion. She’s been training MMA for a few years and is a 2 x MMA United Fight League champ, 2 x IFS Kickboxing. She’s been training wrestling for about 2-3 years, but recently took it seriously and started competing more and earned championships in the following: 2 x State Freestyle champion 1 x State Folkstyle 1 x State Folkstyle runner up, 1 x 4th National Folkstyle champ.

Divana loves to be challenged and doesn’t mind being added to an older and/or heavier bracket she’s always up for a challenge win or lose. Divana is a humble little girl that loves to hang out with her parents especially her dad (she’s a daddy’s girl), but yet has big goals that include, to be one of the best UFC fighters. I can go on and on about Divana, but with this being said Divana is active, loves challenges and loves sports. She hopes to own her own gym and be able to teach and help the unprivileged.

April is an educator and mom of four. Born and raised in Syracuse, NY April has always been driven by sports and competition With a background as a Division 1 Track athlete behind her April ventured onto the mats for the first time in 2011, and never looked back.

As a full time working mom, April was able to garnish 3 IBJJF World Championships at Adult (Blue Gi/Purple Gi) 2 World Championships at Black Belt in Masters, 7 Pan No Gi Titles (Adult Blue-Brown, 3rd place at Black Adult, 2 Black Belt Master Titles) and a myriad of other accolades within the IBJJF. April is a Medusa CJJ veteran and the founder of Grappling Getaways, professionally organized themed travel and training camps for women.

April seeks to empower and inspire whoever she can. April has invested a tremendous amount of time in sports psychology and performance mindset.

This week, Shama sits down with 12 year old orange belt, Charlotte Stollar.

She trains out of Independent MMA and Fitness, a Roberto Traven affiliate, in Villa Rica, GA. Charlotte is a sixth grader at Central Middle School in Carrollton, Ga, where she has maintained a 4.0 GPA while participating in band, chorus, cross country, wrestling, and track, in addition to her jiu jitsu training. She competes regularly at the many Atlanta-area competitions including IBJJF, NAGA, Newbreed, Tap Cancer Out, and AGF. She has also traveled to Alabama, Florida, and Tennessee to compete. Last year, she was invited to be a sponsored athlete of the American Grappling Federation. Over the past two years, Charlotte has attended three Girls in Gis seminars and plans to attend many more in the future.

Charlotte began training when she was 5.5 years old. She hopes to earn her green belt by the time she turns 14 and wants to earn her black belt by 22.

in this episode of AABB, Shama chats with black belt competitor and instructor, Alexa Yanes of Rodrigo Pinheiro BJJ in San Antonio, Texas!

She began training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu 8 years ago and always knew Jiu Jitsu was something she loved to do, but had no idea where it would take her.

Yanes started competing as a white belt for the fun of it, but quickly became more dedicated at blue belt. She has traveled all over the world to compete, teach, and train. She is a multiple time IBJJF open champion at every belt, World no gi champion, Pan American medalist and Abu Dhabi Grand Slam medalist. She has been fortunate enough to make jiu jitsu her primary focus and loves spreading the knowledge of jiu jitsu for her fellow females. Her goal is to show the community it is possible to make a living and how to find opportunities in this sport.

Raised in Boise, Idaho, Heather started traveling at 19 and put on a gi for the first time during a trip to Brazil nearly 10 years ago. Since that day, Heather has traveled and trained all over the globe, eventually earning her blackbelt from the legendary World Champion, Andre Galvao, and the renowned Atos Academy, one of the top competition teams in the world! In addition to her Atos team, Heather has also trained with notable jiu-jitsu luminaries in many other countries, making her style unique.

Heather is not only a credentialed competitor, whose skill and training have been tested at the highest levels but a top-notch coach whose passion for jiu-jitsu inspires and motivates her students!

GIG: Next Generation w/ Anabell Kline

This week, Shama sits down with 17 year old blue belt Annabell Kline!

She trains under Ray and Rachel Casias at Tennessee Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy, a Zenith affiliate. She began her Jiu Jitsu journey at the age of 14, with the intention to learn a form of self defense alongside her younger brother, who had been getting bullied in school. After a few short months training, she discovered her true passion and increased her training regimen in preparation for future competitions. After going undefeated at white belt, Annabell moved through the belt ranks fairly quickly, earning her grey and yellow belts within a year, winning Kids International at grey belt in 2019. The year 2020 marked the beginning of the Covid pandemic, which sidetracked Annabells training regimen, focing a year off from in-gym training.

Following her return to the gym in 2021, Annabell quickly obtained her green and blue belts, placing 3rd in the 2021 Pan American and Jiu Jitsu Con Championships, only one short month after earning her blue belt. She went on to place 2nd in the 2022 Pan American Championship. In addition to success on the competition circuit, Annabell is also an accomplished instructor. She began coaching the TBJJA kids classes at green belt and was taking over as lead instructor by the time she hit blue belt.

She is now the lead instructor for the kids conditioning and competition classes, creating intense conditioning regimens for the serious competitors. She loves sharing her knowledge and passion for Jiu Jitsu with the next genration of practitioners. In her own words, “Seeing these kids grow and become not only amazing athletes, but amazing people, brings me so much pride and joy”. Annabell is known for her technical proficiency in Jiu Jitsu, along with her humble and respectful demeanor both on and off the mat, earning her the respect of her peers and students alike.

GIG: Next Generation w/ Isabella Delgado

This week, Shama sits down with newcomer, Isabella Delgado.

Isabella Delgado is a 9 years old from Caracas, Venezuela. She has lived in the United States for 4 years, specifically in Kissimmee, Florida. She has been practicing Jiujitsu for a year and from the first time her dad took her to train, She fell in love with Jiu Jitsu and it has become an important part of her life. She trains 5 days a week and she combines her training with functional exercises and meditation exercises. She says she loves Jiu Jitsu and it her passion. In the future she says she want to be a lawyer like her mom and dad. She also loves playing the piano, swimming, reading a lot and above all training with her dad. She considers herself fortunate that he also teaches her Lucha Sambo in which he is an expert and she says that has also helped her a lot in my Jiu Jitsu. She loves her family.

This week, Florida GIG ambassador and founder of The Mighty Dames, Torrie O'neil sits down with up-incoming young grappler,Taylor Ellis.

Taylor Ellis is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu blue belt under Kevin Williams at Raptor BJJ. Her jiu jitsu journey has been fast and furious. Her natural ability and athleticism has led Taylor to quickly rise through the ranks and she has collected many medals along the way. She started jiu jitsu almost 3 and a half years ago and had her first big win at the 2021 IBJJF Pan Americans where she took home the gold. After doing jiu jitsu for two years she went into the wrestling world to try and better her game. She ended up winning two different state titles and won a lot of random tournaments. After around 4 months in the wrestling world she came back into jiu jitsu and won ibjjf international at yellow belt. After having her yellow belt for almost a year she got promoted to green belt. As a green belt she went on to earn the IMMAF World MMA title in Abu Dhabi after only practicing 3 times for it. A few weeks later she was promoted to blue. There is no limit to what this rising star will accomplish.

Raina Donatella Tumminello is out of Essential Jiu Jitsu in White Plains NY under 2x ADCC Champion JT Torres. Raina started training at age 6 and has been training Jiu Jitsu for 5 years. She is an avid competitor. Among her many accomplishments she is a 3 X Kids Pan American Medalist (2020 Silver - 2021 Gold - 2022 - Silver). She also earned Bronze at the IBJJF 2019 Las Vegas Open and Gold at the Jiu Jitsu World League 2021 Texas Open. She is sponsored by Tatami Fightwear. In 2023 Raina will be competing at the Kids Pan Americans, and would like to do another IBJJF tournament or JJWL before that. She would also like to do an ADCC Open if they have one in 2023 and go to Europe one day. When she is not on the mats she enjoys eating, traveling, rock climbing, watching Anime, listening to Sia and 21 pilots and she weight trains at Carbon X.

April Parks is a Black Belt in Jiu Jitsu, multiple time World/Pan IBJJF Champion (gi & no gi) at both Adult and Masters. She is a proud mom of four, co-owner of Vien Jiujitsu in Syracuse, full time educator in the city of Syracuse and founder of Grappling Getaways camps for women.

April is a passionate advocate for equal representation, treatment, payment and respect for women in jiujitsu. She believes it is her true talent,and gift, to help others to see their potential and to pursue that potential at all costs, in spite of any obstacle. When April is not on the mats, competing, working, running women's camps or spending time with her family, she enjoys hiking, mediation and time with her doggie baby Lola.

Stacey Councilman began her BJJ journey in early 2014 doing NoGi out of a garage gym and traveling to 10th Planet Walnut Creek and 10th Planet San Francisco regularly. Three months later she was competing regularly and placing 1st or 2nd consistently. Although she trained Gi at Rice Bros BJJ in Redding, a few times a week but mostly stuck to NoGi as a white belt. She trained through her purple belt at Infinite Jiu-Jitsu under Gustavo Enriquez (Cassio Werneck Jiujitsu), In January 2021 she opened her own school The Warriors Forge | Cobra Kai Roseville. While continuing her BJJ journey with Tyler Brey (Cassio Werneck Jiujitsu), and Scott Chapman (Alliance - Chad Bingham), while competing under the Cassio Werneck flag, and earning her brown belt in June of 2021.

She is also the founder of the The Warrior Forged Project and host HERO Self Defense and Mean Girl Project courses In 2021 and 2022 she achieved the title of #1 Female Brown Belt Master 3 in Gi, M3 Open Class (2021 & 2022), and M3 Grand Slam points for IBJJF. She is also ranked #2 in NoGi. She has won the Master Worlds Championship at every colored belt level (blue through Brown -2017, 2019, 2020, and 2021 - 2x at brown belt),

Evelyn Sutton is the publisher and founder of Jiujiteira Magazine. With over 30 years of publishing experience which include a Brazilian community newspaper and a fashion magazine that Evelyn published in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties in South Florida for several years plus 12 years of art and creative direction for the destination marketing industry, Evelyn brings her editorial knowledge to Jiujiteira Magazine, a publication uniquely dedicated to serve the community of women who compete, train, teach and promote Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Evelyn has been training Jiu-Jitsu for four years and is currently a blue-belt under her husband, Professor David Sutton. Together they own Carlson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Team in Melbourne, Florida. Born in Philadelphia, PA to Brazilian parents, Evelyn moved to Brazil at an early age and spent most of her life between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, moving back to the United States at 16 years old. Evelyn credits her upbringing for instilling the respect and love she shares for both Brazilian and American culture.

Melissa Lozano Barberino is a brown belt under Travis Tooke. She works as a Travel Advisor and personal trainer. She is a single mother and trains BJJ almost daily. She is a ten year survivor of breast cancer - the catalyst behind her training & the reason why she prioritizes physical fitness and emotional well being. Her battle with recovery and the complications the had surrounding surgery are the reason why she continues to renegotiate her schedule daily for Jiu Jitsu .

Although she has suffered many injuries in BJJ (2 torn ACLs), she says it have given so much more than its taken. She has become a World Champion and PanAms Champ at every belt level since white and can accredit that to simply refusing to stop showing up.

Almine Barton has been a licensed acupuncturist for 22 years & a certified fitness trainer for 23 years. She’s been rock climbing for 20 years, & climbing ice for 10 years. She’s been training BJJ for 8.5 years, & is the founder of “Hips & Grips Climbing & JiuJitsu Camps.” She lives with her boyfriend & 2 huskies in Bend, OR., where she trains & is an avid climber at “Smith Rock State Park.

GIG: Next Generation w/ Isabella Scallion

Isabella Scallion AKA “Bellazilla Gorilla” @bellasara_jj on Instagram, is a 7 year old gray and white belt training out of Atos Jiu Jitsu HQ in San Diego. Bella has been training since she was 4.5 years old but was forced to take a year off due to Covid. Bella is a full time Warrior Kid who works hard at everything she does and spends a minimum of two hours a day seven days a week on the mats as well as doing lots of drilling and strength and conditioning workouts at home with her dad. Bella has many interests such as swimming, drawing, shooting, archery and is currently learning chess! She loves school, is an all A student and a real leader in the classroom according to her teachers. She is a nature girl who loves science and animals but her passion is jiu jitsu.
When Bella decided to make the jump to Atos about a year ago she realized there were levels to this game. She was a gray and white belt at the time and spent the better part of the first four months or so at Atos getting absolutely rag dolled and ground into the mats by smaller kids and lower belts… but she never quit and kept coming back for more! A year later she is thriving! She loves to train, has made lots of friends and competes as often as possible. Her goals for the future are to earn her black belt, own a gym and be a jiu jitsu instructor as well as a veterinarian, an engineer and a hair dresser. 😂 Her family supports her 100% in everything she does and have total confidence she will reach her goals because Bella has ZERO quit in her. The tougher the challenge the more she embraces the grind. Isabella epitomizes the warrior spirit and shows no signs of slowing down. Keep an eye out for Bella. She’s got a bright future in anything she chooses to pursue.

Girls in Gis presents Real Talk: Building A Women's Team

Our guest panel discusses how to build a women's program, make BJJ more women friendly, build a women student base and the end goal. We have assembled an experienced team of experts that have experience as academy owners, business owners, organizers and pioneers. Join us and our guest as we discuss strategies to build a women's student base, the pros and cons of women only programs and how to normalize women in BJJ.

Courtney Pratt is a MXT Black belt under Edgard Lucke in Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada. She began her BJJ journey 14 years ago and has been leading a women's program for 11 years of those years. She is also the founder of the women's group Women That Fight.

Multiple time IBJJF World Champion legend Emily Kwok is not only an elite BJJ athlete she is also an academy owner and head instructor at Princeton BJJ and co-founder of Groundswell Grappling Concepts. She is a long time women's BJJ advocate and leader.

Jill Baker is a black belt in Baker BJJ. She is a multiple time master world and Pan Am champion. She is also co-owner and instructor at Bakersfield BJJ. She is also head instructor for the Bakersfield Riveters Women's program in addition to being the founder of SoCal women’s open mats.

Alex Sterner, BS, CSCS is a co-founder and Head Coach of Electrum Performance, and the Director of Performance at Jiujiteiro.
