The Journey from Vaccine Hesitancy to Acceptance as a Practicing Physician

According to an article in Forbes, the unvaccinated include nearly 1 in 3 workers at the nation’s 50 largest hospitals. Reasons cited include uncertainty over safety, preference for physiological immunity, distrust of government and health organizations, and autonomy/personal freedom. Monthly survey data gathered through Facebook suggests that vaccine hesitancy ranges from 9% among pharmacists to 20%-23% among nursing aides and emergency medical technicians. The Benefits of Transitional Care Units (TCU) at Dialysis Facilities

Transitional Care Units (TCUs) are designed to provide personalized education to patients with kidney failure. Whether those patients are new to dialysis, transitioning between in-center and home dialysis or returning to dialysis after transplantation, there are benefits to both patients and facilities from having a TCU program. The Advancing American Kidney Health organization has an initiative goal of having 80% of newly diagnosed patients with kidney failure receive a transplant or be on home dialysis by 2025. Studies have shown that more than 50% of patients who complete education in a TCU will choose home dialysis as their preferred modality (vs. 15% on average). The Top 5 Things Providers Can Do to Improve Behavioral Health Services to Youth in Foster Care

In 2019, there were 423,997 children in foster care, with the average age of the child being 8 years old. Although they make up only 3% of the Medicaid population under age 18, children in foster care account for 32% of the recipients of behavioral health care services in this age group and it is estimated that nearly 80 percent of these children suffer from a significant mental health concern. As a result of these increased mental health issues, youth in foster care are often prescribed psychotropic medications at a much higher rate than youth who are not in foster care. Provider Benefits of Encouraging Annual Wellness Visits

Despite their value, Medicare annual wellness visits are healthcare services that are underused. A Medicare annual wellness visit can provide an important opportunity to assess a range of factors, including functional status, health risks, cognitive function and health indicators such as blood pressure.

The visit can also be a good time to coordinate care and increase patient activation. But, as the study found, the percentage of eligible Medicare beneficiaries who actually receive annual wellness visits is very small (18.8%). Medicare began offering the annual wellness visit benefit in 2011 under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) as a way to proactively address risks and improve the health of older adults. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reimburses medical practices for the visits, which are offered free of charge to beneficiaries.
