Increasing physical activity is a positive, proactive way businesses can contribute to their communities and employees during the COVID-19 pandemic while, at the same time, reducing costs through lowering health care spend, increasing productivity, and morale. While physical activity is shown to reduce stress and strengthen the immune system, socioeconomic disparities are clear as not everyone is physically able and not everyone has a safe place to exercise. Preliminary results of changes in nature-based physical activity and stress levels before and during the pandemic indicate mental health has declined, increased park use is due to new or displaced exercisers, and some increased neighborhood exercise is due to displaced park users. Further research in populations that can better capture the exasperation of inequality in access to nature for physical activity is needed for long-term health and economic implications in all populations.
