In this week show we feature two presentations from the Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies Conference. As we study the modern phenomenon of the descendants of the Anusim reclaiming their Sephardic Jewish heritage, we must point out that Jews and Latinos have a lot in common. For instance, in contemporary American culture Jews are still being maligned as the scary other, suspicious chameleon or enemies of Christianity (I will cite specific examples at the end of this document). At the same time, Latinos are often dismissed as invaders, illegitimate members of society and are seen as possible criminal elements infiltrating North American society. In my research on the subject I have found that the challenges faced by both Latin American immigrants and those who found out about their Jewish heritage are intertwined. Currently Jews have lost the admiration of the public and Latinos are often underrepresented in popular culture. There is also the depiction of Jews as an eternal boogeyman and in the Jewish community the concept of the “marrano” is used as a stand-in for a “bad Jew.” Ashkenasi Jews speak of Crypto-Jews similarly to the Spanish term “inadaptado;” someone who does not work well with others and can’t find their place in the world. Growing up in Mexico I was shocked when I found out that the term ladino commonly used as a synonym for scoundrel was connected to the Sephardic language used in the Mediterranean.

For the hook, West and his group the Hooligans chant "All my niggas Nazis, nigga, heil Hitler." West's first verse details the current state of his life, including his custody battle and the freezing of his assets, using them as justification for why he "became a Nazi". The song ends with a sample taken from a 1935 Adolf Hitler speech. The speech is in German, and translates to:

We start a new tradition, a monthly rant. A sermon, speech or discussion about the world and how we can make it better. 17 year ago I attempted to start a new organization at 27 years old I had worked for a few non-profits and was idealistic still a little naive. Not only was I put through the ringer having worked for a refugee agency assisting HT victims but I had been an organizer for a union, a case manager at a detention center for immigrants but worked as a legal assistant at an immigration law firm. After all these experiences I was ready to take on the world by creating a ministry or non-profit that kept the vision of MLK alive. It’s name was A More Excellent Way a phrase used by him quoting the writings of the apostle Paul. 1 Corinthians 12:31 "Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. And yet I will show you the most excellent way." Reverend Doctor King is pointing to the Way of Love described by Paul as "Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant..." connecting to the peaceful nature of the Jesus Movement and the Jewish concept of Chessed or loving-kindness which became a foundational component of the Civil Rights movement. This week, I came across the most ridiculous argument among progressives it is between Cenk Uger from The Young Turks, Sam Seder from The Majority Report and the always controversial Jimmy Dore anti-war comedian activist that I follow closely. Sam and the young lady he co-hosts with in their weekly show on YouTube were sharing "old gossip” about their interactions while part of the Young Turks. All this came about because they believe that Ana Casperian and Cenk are going right wing in an effort to get more viewers. There are many conspiracies from Sam and Jimmy that TYT is a front for the democratic party which attempts to behave in a liberal way to attract young people to the party and then always folds to the institutional party or the establishment narrative from the corporate donors when needed. According to Sam Seder TYT was one of the most popular shows on YouTube at one point and now it has turned into a clown show. Seder also attacks Jimmy Dore for some reason which I found unfair as he often calls out politicians from both sides of the political spectrum specially as People are dying, the world is getting worse. I would be the first to call him an "A Tool of the Antisemitic/Conspiratorial Left" but he actually speaks about the possibility of nuclear war, the deep state, the evil perpetrated by both parties and the need to fight for the poor. Although he has attempted to get single payer healthcare for all by pressuring Bernie Sanders, AOC and other candidates, he has turned into the mouthpiece of the radical anti-Israel section of the left by sharing his ontological disdain for Jews which comes from conspiracies and his mostly Roman Catholic upbringing. Although politics are messy I believe we can overcome this confusion through steering back the peace movement to a Spiritual Consciousness found in MLK writings.

While confined here in the Birmingham city jail, I came across your recent statement calling my present activities "unwise and untimely." Seldom do I pause to answer criticism of my work and ideas. If I sought to answer all the criticisms that cross my desk, my secretaries would have little time for anything other than such correspondence in the course of the day, and I would have no time for constructive work. But since I feel that you are men of genuine good will and that your criticisms are sincerely set forth, I want to try to answer your statement in what I hope will be patient and reasonable terms.I think I should indicate why I am here in Birmingham, since you have been influenced by the view which argues against "outsiders coming in." I have the honor of serving as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization operating in every southern state, with headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. We have some eighty five affiliated organizations across the South, and one of them is the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights. Frequently we share staff, educational and financial resources with our affiliates. Several months ago the affiliate here in Birmingham asked us to be on call to engage in a nonviolent direct action program if such were deemed necessary. We readily consented, and when the hour came we lived up to our promise. So I, along with several members of my staff, am here because I was invited here. I am here because I have organizational ties here.But more basically, I am in Birmingham because injustice is here. Just as the prophets of the eighth century B.C. left their villages and carried their "thus saith the Lord" far beyond the boundaries of their home towns, and just as the Apostle Paul left his village of Tarsus and carried the gospel of Jesus Christ to the far corners of the Greco Roman world, so am I compelled to carry the gospel of freedom beyond my own home town. Like Paul, I must constantly respond to the Macedonian call for aid.Moreover, I am cognizant of the interrelatedness of all communities and states. I cannot sit idly by in Atlanta and not be concerned about what happens in Birmingham. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. Never again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial "outside agitator" idea. Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds.You deplore the demonstrations taking place in Birmingham. But your statement, I am sorry to say, fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations. I am sure that none of you would want to rest content with the superficial kind of social analysis that deals merely with effects and does not grapple with underlying causes. Omer Bartov vs. David Josef Volodzko Regarding Genocide

In this weeks show Journalist David Josef Volodzko returns. The controversial author had an exchange with Genocide expert Omer Bartov. Dr. Bartov wrote an article in The Guardian arguing The State of Israel is guilty of genocide. Volodzko responding to the accusation of Genocide is presented after reading Omer Bartov essay in this episode. His email response to Bartov is below:

“Mr. Bartov, I read your moving essay in The Guardian this morning. It is maybe one of the more powerful essays I have read of this nature since Oct 7. I do not see the case for genocide, but I do feel it is important to humanize both sides of this conflict, as you have done. I wish there was more writing like this out there. I am surprised that you wrote of the "utter inability of Israeli society today to feel any empathy..." I would argue for the removal of "utter" and "any" and I have seen videos of Israelis being interviewed and, even after Oct 7, expressing compassion for the people of Gaza. Perhaps you have also seen such videos. I have also spoken to my Israeli friends. Only the most extreme far-right have literally zero compassion for the Gazans. But this is a minor point in an overall impressive call for rachamin.”He replied, but only to thank me for my message. He did not actually engage any of my points. Frankly, I find his argument absurd. In the video you sent, he claims that Israel is guilty of genocide because Gazans have no place left to run.

This ignores the geopolitical and military realities of this war. And I do not care that Bartov is widely regarded as a genocide expert. He has that reputation because he is a historian of the Holocaust. That does not give him expertise in assessing all types of genocide or all types of military conflict. And despite my respect for his humanity and compassion, and his staggeringly impressive historical work on the Holocaust, I personally think his understanding of genocide, or applkication of that understanding to this specific conflict, is stunningly ignorant.

No act of violence is genocidal unless it has genocidal intent. Period. You can kill only five people and it can be genocidal violence. You can kill 100,000 and it may not be genocidal whatsoever. Genocide must have the intention of erasing an ethnic group, or attempting to do so. Bartov is instead using Ibram X. Kendi's definition of racism, adapted to the concept of genocide. Namely, that if the results mirror the results you would get from racism, then it is racism. Or, if you see many people being trapped and killed as you would expect to see in a true genocide, then it is genocide.

This is asinine. Again, genocide is the attempt to kill off an entire ethnic group. Hence genos- + -cide. So if someone wants to claim that Israel intends to kill all Palestinians, they are first going to have to explain why 20% of Israel is Palestinian. It's a pretty fucking weird form of genocide that gives citizenship and social welfare benefits to the ethnic group you are trying to wipe out of existence, or allows them into your own government, and even collects terrorists of that ethnicity who have slaughtered your own children — and treats them, saving their lives, even the lives of the

"Something strange has arrived on Cape Cod, and it’s not just the UFOs.

Melissa "Mel" Howard, a reporter for a small Cape Cod newspaper, copes with the seasonal tourist invasion and its accompanying anxieties. The Eunuch is a twisted tale of personal love, moral depravity, imperial overreach, and societal decline. The scope is staggering, the setting exotic, the characters original—and the narrator’s voice is not only compelling but also frequently hilarious. The historical details have been painstakingly researched. Although it can stand scrutiny as a historical novel, The Eunuch is really an accessible literary mash-up that calls to mind the Game of Thrones novels, Lolita, the Gormenghast novels, and Memoirs of a Geisha, with aristocratic gluttony and sexual indulgence set against the drought and famine of the failing Babylonian empire.

The central themes of The Eunuch are big and timeless: sex and sexuality, love, greed and ambition, power, betrayal, religion, war and the causes of war. As students of history we are looking for answers to the ethical as well as moral concerns about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In the latest episode of the Jimmy Dore Show Dr. Norman Finkelstein displayed many inconsistencies in his approach to the issue. Although, I respect his work I also feel that it is important to hold people accountable for their rhetoric. He justifies Hamas' incursion as a last ditch effort for freedom. However, in 2012 I contacted him and asked him the following questions:
1. What do you think would be a national solution for the Palestinian people since they have two territories controlled by two different parties. Is there a three state solution that is possible?
2. If the people living in the Palestinian territories have not been able to create a sustainable government in order for them to achieve their aspirations for a nation including seccesion, what is the international community to do to help them become independent?
3. What rules of war should be used when the two opposing parties do not agree on any type of conventional norms such as the treatment of captives fairly, not shooting at civilian targets and not using certain weapons which are indiscriminate while hitting targets and the area around them?
4. Israeli supporters of the occupation of Gaza and the West Bank claim that the checkpoints are necessary for security.
5. Lately Palestinian writers and supporters have been calling Gaza a ghetto, calling the offence against Gaza worse than the Holocaust and saying that the attacks on civilians are similar to pogroms. Is it really fair to use terms that are painful to the Jewish people to compare current events with Jewish persecution throughout history?
6. According to Reza Aslan’s dissertation on Muslim Nationalist groups there is a difference between Islamist (Muslim Nationalist groups), Jihadists ( who want global domination) and moderate Muslims who are the majority. Do you feel that Hamas has changed the debate since they would fall under an Islamist framework?
7. According to Democracy now, Egypt is also blowing up the tunnels that connect Gaza with the outside. Is there any legitimate concern about weapons being smuggled into Gaza to support militant groups instead of a legitimate military?
9. Do you stand against all forms of military wars, both of aggression and defense?
10. Do you think Israel is racist and imperialistic like some of the other critics say? Do you differentiate between the hackish current leaders and some racist Ultra-orthodox taking over the political parties in Israel and the population of Israel and other Jews in America?
We left conversation there after he shared being unavailable to address these concerns in full. In my opinion people's minds are being poisoned by two conflictive narratives which are neither fully true nor absolute and in a binary world we will never find a common ground if we compare people to nazis, the most hated evil group in human history.

In this episode we discuss Jörg Frey's book "Qumran, Early Judaism, and New Testament Interpretation." In it he perpetuates a diabolical form of interpreting the New Testament by using Anti-Jewish tropes instead of a careful examination of the texts, as he proclaims the following: "Dualistic concepts are rather used to qualify the enemies of the communities, the Roman power as well as the synagogue (Rev 2:9; 3:9), the Jews, and also deviant or “heretic” Christians. Thus 1 and 2 John explicitly draw on the concept of an “antichrist,” and label the deviant teachers as “antichrist(s)” (2 John 7; cf. 1 John 2:18; 4:3) pp.322-324. Claiming that all of this is part of "Jewish apocalypticism” he thinks he can get away with pilling other Jews among the enemies of the new Israel (church/followers of Jesus) without taking into consideration that Jewish-Christians at that time were being persecuted by either other Jews who were aligned with Rome, religious leaders who found their teachings objectionable or Roman authorities who saw them as a threat to world peace. Mr. Frey calls "the synagogue" or "the Jews" the enemies of Christianity showing his inherent bias and Judeophobia which as we show on our program he attempts to attribute to Jesus (Jewish) Movement.

In this week's episode we discuss Rabbi Ariel Tzadok post called "The Torah of Yeshu HaNotzi versus the Gospel of Jesus Christ." He is featured on the History Channel's Ancient Aliens program and spearheads www.koshertorah.com working with Noachides, Jews and Christians teaching them Jewish concepts. In his post he discusses the following book:
"The Jesus Scroll is a best-selling book first published in 1972 and written by Australian author Donovan Joyce. A forerunner to some of the ideas later investigated in The Da Vinci Code, Joyce's book made the claim that Jesus of Nazareth may have actually died aged 80 at Masada[4] near the Dead Sea, site of the last stand made by Jewish zealot rebels against the Roman Empire, after the Fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Second Temple. Joyce, an Australian journalist, claimed to have seen a scroll stolen from the Masada excavations. He wrote that it was one of fifteen scrolls discovered during the dig there. His book states that the stolen autobiographical scroll was signed Yeshua ben Ya’akob ben Gennesareth, who described himself as eighty years old and added that he was the last of the rightful kings of Israel. The name when translated into English became Jesus of Gennesareth, son of Jacob. Joyce identifies the author as Jesus of Nazareth. Joyce's book further suggests that Jesus may have survived the crucifixion, was present during the Roman siege of Masada during the Jewish Revolt of 66-74 AD, and that he had married Mary Magdalene and fathered a child with her. Joyce claimed that he attempted to visit Masada in 1964 during the archaeological excavation but was prevented by Yigael Yadin. Joyce further claimed that an anonymous and corrupt archaeologist, "Dr. Grosset", asked him to help smuggle the 'Jesus Scroll' out of Israel that had been discovered during that dig. Joyce says in his book that the scroll was sneaked aboard an airplane by Dr. Grosset, who then most likely took it to Russia to strike a deal with Soviet leaders. We have a special treat for our audience. Our guest is musical artist Ari Lesser. He is a Jewish American rapper, singer and songwriter. He is known for his advocacy for the State of Israel and Jewish religious life and lifestyle. He studied political science, has performed with Gad Elbaz and Lipa Schmeltzer. He has spoken and performed at hundreds of events for Jewish communities around the world, and done shows with Moshav Band and Nissim Black. In 2008 Mr. Lesser became religious and took a Nazirite vow in 2009, the hebrew term for this tradition is Nazir.

In the past year we have been discussing the sectarian group of the Jewish followers of Jesus. In our research the Apostle Paul, John The Baptist and James brother of Jesus are discussed as either taking a Nazarite vow or being nazarites. "Nazarite" comes from the Hebrew word nazir meaning "consecrated"(Numbers 6:1–21) or "separated", and may be ultimately derived from a root meaning "to vow", similar to Hebrew nadar. The word nazir is also sometimes used to refer to a prince, who fills a special position of secular power, and the cognate word nezer can refer to either the state of being a nazirite, or else to a physical crown.

On March 30 Mr. Lesser posted on facebook the article “It’s not easy being a Nazir in the 21st century.” discussing his experience with a modern orthodox high school that decided to not have him visit their students due to their religious outlook which seems to be against this tradition. The book The Tribunal of Zaragoza and Crypto-Judaism 1484-1515 sheds light into the histographical proof of the Crypto-Jewish experience of certain individuals summoned by the Inquisition in the 15th Century. During that time period the inquisitorial tribunal tried and prosecuted countless “Catholic” heretics for the crime of Judaizing. Ms. D’Abrera profound understanding of the subject exposes the social and political issues connected with this crucial part of Jewish history as well as the controversies that are part of this academic field. In page 172 she defines their negative belief system which is seen by the Inquisition as heresy, according to the 1484 Valencian Edict of Grace: “… if you have believed, taught or said you believe something against the Catholic faith or if you know anyone who has blasphemed. “

Ms. D’Abrera not only addresses how the Inquisition persecuted the anusim systematically, but her research adds important facts to the limited resources on this subject. Her scholarly approach documents and explains the sources thoroughly corroborating her findings. The book exposes the Inquisition record, and lets it speak for itself something other scholars fail to do in many cases. She addresses many important issues not dealt with by other scholars, such as Ben Zion Netanyahu, Norman Roth and Henry Kamen. They view Conversos not as Crypto-Jews, but as sincere Catholics who were falsely accused of practicing Judaism due to their Jewish lineage. On the other hand Haim Beinart and Fritz Baer, using multiple sources, portray them show Crypto-Jews as Jewish martyrs who died honoring Torah. D’Abreira is part of the new generation of scholars who study the Inquisition records to find clues which point to a real Crypto-Jewish community. These findings are not based on a preconceived agenda, but build a case based on the historical evidence. She writes”…the inquisitors’ questions and conduct throughout the trials indicate that they were far more interested in the religious behavior of the defendant after he or she had been received into the Church, rather than presuming to judge whether the conversion had been genuine or not.” (P. 51)

Heritage Hunters 4 Part I Maimonides on Crypto-Judaism

In this week’s show the topic is Maimonides on Crypto-Judaism. This presentation took place in 2010 in San Antonio during the 20th Annual Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies Conference. I presented on this subject to discover some insights on the halachic (Jewish legal) status of Crypto-Jews. I explored the writings of the halakhic master Maimonides, one of his works Iggeret ha-Shemad (Letter on Martyrdom) stands out regarding his perspective on the Anusim of his time. Maimonides writes: “Now if he did not surrender himself to death but transgressed under duress and did not die, he did not act properly and under compulsion he profaned G-d’s name. However, he is not to be punished by any of the seven means of retribution. Not a single instance is found in the Torah in which a forced individual is sentenced to any of the punishments, whether the transgression was light or grave. Only he who acts voluntarily is subject as Scripture directs: "But the person…who acts defiantly…that soul shall be cut off" (Numbers 15:30). This Epistle to the Moroccan Jewish community of the 12th century deals with their forced conversions to Islam; as compared to the modern day Anusim who are the descendants of those who were forced to convert to Catholicism. This letter is a response to an unidentified rabbi who wrote to the Jews of Morocco condemning them as heretics. At the time of this presentation there was one contemporary scholar of religious law who agreed with the 12th Century rabbi and considers the Rambam’s letter a fiasco. Haym Soloveitchik, believed the letter written by Maimonides contradicted the Mishnah Torah and has a “flimsy position and (a) make shift” argument. This letter and it’s critique are relevant to the debate of Modern-day Conversos or Anusim. As there are two prevalent views regarding this issue either in their Muslim or Christian forms. On one side the Jewish community helps them achieve repentance as expressed by the Rambam. And on the other condemns them as Soloveitchik clearly indicates in his critique of the Rambam’s letter.

In this week’s episode of Heritage Hunters we will go deeper into the history of Crypto-Jews or descendants of the Spanish-Portuguese Jews in the Americas known as the Anusim. This often maligned group, who are no longer called marranos, keep popping up in popular culture and every now and then in major Jewish publications. However, just because it is an interesting topic that does not mean that anyone really cares about these individuals. The reason that I sound cynical is because most CryptoJews are either in a “no man’s land” of sorts or are part of the many evangelical churches which are only interested in some kind of Israelism. En nuestro primer episodio de la serie "Cazadores de Nuestro Pasado hablamos de mis ancestros y de la persecusion ilogica encontra de la comunidad Judia por los antisemitas Christianos.
"...soy com un Judio errante que busca tu amor." Es parte de una canción folclórica Mexicana interpretada por el Dueto America.

Recientemente La Ettnia grupo colombiano de Rap creo una canción menos antisemita llamada también Judio Errante.

"A ti yo te eh visto en riecas momentos
En realidad no hay tiempo para lamentos
Solamente uno es tu albedrio
Correr al compás del errante judío"

hay hasta una oración católica para el Judio errante:

"¡Oh, pobre Judío Errante
que al negar el agua a Nuestro Señor
fuiste condenado a vagar por la tierra
por toda la eternidad!"

¿Quién era el judío errante?

El judío errante es un mito del cristianismo, una leyenda que relata que durante el penoso camino a la crucifixión con su cruz a cuestas, bajo los latigazos de los soldados romanos, entre los abucheos de la gente, Jesús siente sed y se detiene ante un abrevadero. Un viejo judío le niega el agua, le da un empujón y le dice que siga andando. "Yo seguiré", le contesta Jesús, "pero tú esperarás hasta que yo regrese", y continúa su marcha hacia el Gólgota. Jesús lo condenó a andar errante por la Tierra hasta su segunda venida, hasta la Parusía.

Heritage Hunters Episode 1 The Wandering Jew

In our first episode of the series "Heritage Hunters" we discuss the history of my ancestors and the illogical persecution of the Jewish community by Christian anti-Semites in Latin America and Europe.

"...I'm like a wandering Jew looking for your love." This phrase is part of a Mexican folk song performed by Dueto America.

Recently, La Ettnia, a Colombian Rap group, created a less anti-Semitic song also called Wandering Jew.

"I have seen you in many moments
There's really no time for regrets
Only one is your will
Running to the beat of the wandering Jew"

There is even a Catholic prayer for the wandering Jew:

"Oh poor Wandering Jew
that by denying water to Our Lord
you were condemned to wander the earth
for the whole eternity!
Wandering Jew who by offending Our Lord
you will travel forever around the world."

Who was the wandering Jew?

“The Wandering Jew is a Christian myth, a legend that recounts that during the arduous road to crucifixion with his cross on his back, under the whipping of the Roman soldiers, amid the jeers of the people, Jesus feels thirsty and stops before a trough. An old Jew refuses him water, gives him a push and tells him to keep going. "I will continue", Jesus replies, "but you will wait until I return", and he continues his march towards Golgotha. Jesus condemned him to wander the earth until his second coming, until the Parousia."

In this weeks show our guest is Kristin Urquiza who co-founded Marked by Covid non-profit organization. Ms. Urquiza’s father died from COVID after trusting Arizona Governor Doug Ducey’s claims that “it was safe to resume normal activities” in June, as the state surged with COVID cases and her childhood neighborhood of Maryvale — a low-income community with a large population of immigrants and Latinx residents — recorded some of the worst numbers on the planet. A few days later, Trump was seen wearing a mask in public for the first time.
