Michael G. Hasel, PhD, has taught Near Eastern studies and archaeology at Southern since 1998. He is married to Giselle Sarli Hasel, a professor of art history in the School of Visual Art and Design at Southern. Dr. Hasel is curator of the award-winning, Lynn H. Wood Archaeological Museum at Southern Adventist University and Giselle served as the design director and art coordinator for the museum which opened in 2004. Together they have two children, Daniella and Sarah, who enjoy traveling with their parents whenever possible.

Elizabeth Viera Talbot was born in Argentina to the home of Adventist missionaries. After completing her Bachelors in music education, Elizabeth worked in the business world for approx. 15 years, and during that time she volunteered as a part-time youth pastor. While working in the accounting/managing departments, she earned a Master’s degree in Organizational Behavior. Eventually Elizabeth was invited by the Seventh-day Adventist church to become a full-time pastor which she gladly accepted as a call from God. She became a full-time young adults/families’ pastor and evangelist while earning her Master’s degree and subsequent Ph.D.in Biblical Studies. After becoming a senior pastor for several years and an adjunct Biblical Studies Professor, Elizabeth is now living her calling to preach the gospel through various media venues worldwide. Elizabeth is married to Patrick Talbot, a retired Marriage and Family Therapist. Elizabeth’s main identity is her passion about the good news of Jesus Christ: “It’s like fire in my bones” she says, and she means it!

In honor of Beth’s upcoming birthday, Beth invites her long-time mentor and friend, Lynn Ortel. Lynn has a beautiful way of always encouraging, always building other up and ALWAYS bringing every conversation back to the glorious love of our Savior and friend Jesus Christ. Every moment of this conversation was so special that we are giving you the complete uncut version.

Lynn is and has been a mentor to Beth for over 27 years. Their friendship has been an incredible blessing bringing encouragement and always uplifting Jesus. Lynn has a passion to experience the real and relevant God. Her life’s mission statement is “to live a life of love” (see Ephesians 5:1-2), and she has traveled globally to share about this God who makes all the difference in our lives. Lynn is currently serving as the women’s ministries director for the Arizona Conference, and she has previously served the Adventist Church in various conferences in communications, family ministries, women’s ministries, children’s ministries, and ministerial spouse’s association.

Lynn is married to Mike, and they have three outstanding children and six wonderful grandchildren. She was a registered nurse when her children came along, and then she chose to be a stay-at-home mom until they outgrew homeschooling and went to traditional school. For about eight years, she cared for three developmentally disabled women in her home 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In later years she earned a bachelor of science in psychology and a master of arts in counseling, and became a licensed professional clinical counselor.

Sarah McDugal is an author, speaker, trainer, and Abuse Recovery Coach who works exclusively with women wounded by toxic relationships in the faith community. An Alumnus of Southern Adventist University, she also received her Master's degree from Andrews University.

Beth and Kim sit down with the ever popular Courtnie Hodgins, and Carolyn Kendall to have a fun conversation about all things thanksgiving. They share traditions, talk about food (of course) and just experience all the joys of talking about Thanksgiving.

Courtnie Hodgins was born, raised and lives near Charlotte, NC. She’s married to Ryan and has three girls ages 6-10. She enjoys cooking, working out (so she can eat, haha), spending time with friends and family, and in true introvert fashion, she loves her quiet down time! She loves to learn more about the character of God, and longs to be more like Him.

Carolyn Kendall, a very close friend to Beth, is a Nurse Anesthetist, wife (of 1) & mother of 3 teenagers. She enjoys making music, yoga & being outdoors with friends. Carolyn has the gift of hospitality and is always opening her home to friends and strangers alike.

Beth’s Vegetarian “Turkey”

Purchase or make seitan (Beth uses, Dinner Roast by Worthington )

If using the dinner roast, bake and then let cool.

Make vegetarian gravy.

2 Tbs. Flour
2 Tbs. butter or margarine
(whisk together in a sauce pan until it starts to thicken and brown then add...)
2 Cups of vegetable broth/ or milk
1 tsp. Beef style seasoning or chicken or soy sauce.
Wisk together until thick and set aside to cool

Make Stuffing or dressing. Any recipe that you like is fine!!!!

4 cups of wheat and white cubed dried bread
1 large onion
3 stalks of celery diced
3 carrots diced
½ fresh parsley chopped
2 tsp. Rubbed sage
1-2 Cups of vegetable broth
Oil to saute vegetables.

Add a few tablespoons of oil to a pan and saute onion celery and carrots until soft. Add sage and fresh parsley. Add saute mixture to cubed bread, add vegetable broth. Mix together and set aside.
1-2 Packages of puff pastry sheets (depends on how much decorating you want to do and or how big a “turkey” you are making. 1 is usually fine but sometimes I like to have two. )
Thaw the puff pastry.
Grease a baking platter (oven safe serving platter) or a cookie sheet with parchment paper. (I prefer a sheet with no sides so I can slide the entire turkey onto a platter once it is baked. If you don’t have a cookie sheet with no sides just turn your cookie sheet upside down.)
Cut the “dinner roast” apart into irregular shapes and sizes. Then dip each piece in the gravy and place in an oval on the parchment paper or platter. Keep mounding and making a large oval until every piece is there. Then mound on top of that the stuffing. Then top with puff pastry decorating the edges and the top with design of your choice. (This is a fun job for kids!) Brush with milk or egg wash.

Bake at 350 for 45minutes. Cover with tin foil if it starts to get too brown. Serve warm. Enjoy!

Mary Beth Hagan is an elementary school teacher and a mother of four. She has two grown children- Marissa and Mitchell, and two adopted children, David (12) and John (10). She loves living in the mountains of North Carolina where her family enjoys hiking, biking, and traveling. Mary Beth is passionate about children and young adults of all ages feeling valued and encouraged to reach their full potential with the gifts God has given them. She has also led out in FLAG camp, a summer day camp her church holds for the community each summer, for the past 15 years.

Beth and Kim sit down to talk with their friend Tammy Vaughn to have a real honest conversation.

Tammy is the proud wife (of 33 years) to Bob Vaughan, mother of Matt and Luke, graduate of Mount Pisgah Academy near Asheville, NC (go ’83), daughter of God, and 3-year breast cancer survivor. Raised in Asheville from seventh grade through college, all she wanted was to get back to the mountains. She and her family were able to do this in 2007, just in time for their boys to attend her same academy. Tammy enjoys volunteering time at both her church and the school while getting to be Mom away from Mom to the students who attend there, doing anything craft-related, collecting clocks for their clock room (which contains approximately 40), and wearing pink to remind women to get their mammograms every year. God saved her life through mammography, ultrasound, and her medical team, and she now strives to show women the importance of early detection and urges everyone to slow down and enjoy the little things.

While working on his theology degree, Ryan got involved in a number of youth-focused projects, including the university’s Engage Ministries and the Southern Union of Seventh-day Adventists’ Young Adult Ministry. These early works deepened Ryan’s love of creating honest, open conversations regarding religion and social activism.

She is a project manager for WayForth and volunteers as a co-facilitator for the University City Alzheimer's Caregiver Support Group in Charlotte, NC. She values connectedness and is grateful for the tender way God loves her.

We have all experienced those moments when one of our friends is celebrating a new job and we are recently jobless, or when they are pregnant with their third, and we can't get pregnant, or when you get 10 wedding invitations each spring and you can't even get a date...This episode tackles how to handle it when your joy is my weeds or when my joy is your weeds.

Beth Grissom is the Women’s Ministries Director for the Carolina Conference. She is a speaker, writer, Sabbath School teacher and elder in her local church. Beth is passionate about sharing the transformative beauty of having a loving relationship with Christ. She has been married for 30 years to the love of her life Chris and they have 3 grown children. This year she was given a new name, Grammie B, after the birth of her first grandchild Nolan Parker. She enjoys travel, great food, music and sitting on the couch with absolutely nothing to do! One of Beth’s favorite bible passages is Psalms 30:11-12. “You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent. Lord my God, I will praise you forever.

Kim Cove is a nurturer of the hurting and encourager of the fallen. She uses her God-given gifts of compassion and empathy, and training as a marriage and family therapist, to walk alongside those who choose to courageously journey from brokenness to healing. She and her husband Tim have been married for over 31 years and serve in pastoral ministry. They have two adult children, Cameo and Jared. Kim, born and raised in Canada, has lived throughout the US and Canada. She finds delight in traveling, reading, and numerous creative endeavours such as painting, writing, and knitting. Her life verse is 1 Corinthians 15:10, “By the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace to me is not without effect.”
