My very exhibitionist boobs decided to drop into frame during a liver MRI in 2022, and they were keeping a secret; they harboured two spots of invasive lobular cancer on the right side. Since the age of 16, my breasts were the objects of criticism and unwanted attention; add that to witnessing my mom's ordeal with her cancer journey, and the decision became clear: take them both (I don't want to be lopsided) and do a flat aesthetic closure. I had an incredible surgeon (Dr. Mei), who listened to me, respected my wishes, and did an amazing job creating a body that I am comfortable in. I was also surrounded by the love of so many people, including the Rev Cythia and my mother-in-law, who stepped in to care for me and speed my recovery, bringing me to tears many times. The numbness from the surgery made me feel like I wore a piece of armour, which somehow made me feel stronger. My husband (Sean) was instrumental in my recovery, never putting a demand for new boobs, although we are open enough to speak about missing them sometimes. He also introduced me to the BoobblessBabe (Stephanie), who oozes sexiness thanks to her confidence and serves as a role model. I don't speak about this cancer or the PNET one because I don't want it to be my defining identity. I refuse to be called "a cancer survivor" because it makes me feel like I live in its shadow. Doing the pictures with Mark was another step to reaffirming my connection with this new body.

Elizabeth is a leap first kinda woman. She is a granddaughter of Spanish refugees and an immigrant from Venezuela at 18, leaving her family behind. With no English but driven by a dream, her positive mindset makes it work. She is stubborn. Failure is “a first attempt in learning.” Strong women and gentle men shaped her view. Her North Star is always choosing kindness. Her story of misunderstanding her husband’s real name until he proposed is so her is a chuckle. Elizabeth shares her view on how empowerment through education works for her. Her parenting philosophy is that children are only “borrowed” for a while, which is unique.

I was born and raised in Venezuela, and I have always felt like I belong to “the in between” as my family is from Spain originally, and the goal was to return there someday. I was raised by very strong women, which made me fearless, and I was protected by two incredibly strong men who showed me that the only limits were within myself. I came to Canada at 18 to learn English, and I keep arguing that I am still working at it, so I can’t leave. I met my soulmate soon after arriving, and he has been my rock and my refuge in sickness and in health; we have weathered fierce storms and have become a safe harbour for each other, and I would choose him again in any future lives. I have two courageous, funny, and authentic younger humans who let me walk beside them not only as a mom but also as a friend. I have two precious heirlooms: my grandmother’s ring and a pendant made by a friend’s dad that carried healing vibes. I am an amateur goldsmith, an avid reader, an archer, and I almost got arrested in Spain when I was pregnant for disrupting a police raid.

Roberta Nickel shares insights with Mark about her 18-plus years in the Canadian Navy, as the only woman in her unit. Her time as her mom’s caregiver led to her discovering a love of belly dancing. Into the mix was embracing the Society for Creative Anachronism, a medieval live events group, which was interestingly paired with her entry as a practising Wiccan. Roberta was born in Calgary and did her schooling   there. She is a second-generation Calgarian.

 She is a railway brat as her father worked as a conductor for the CNR and she saw a lot of Western Canada from the window of a train. When she turned 17 and 6 months, she joined the RCNR and  

Became a Communicator, which made her father proud. She spent 18 and a half years in the navy and saw much of Canada during that time. She can tell you a lot about that time. Just ask her.

After doing her time, she became her mother’s caregiver. She did that until 1998 when her mother passed away.

Roberta does Belly dancing and Square Dancing to relive  stress. She also rides horses; can do 

Archery; does Background acting; and enjoys Reading.

She is a witch and enjoys learning the many aspects of it.

Jane Duncan, a 67-year-old dancer and educator, shares insights on her life and careers. She always knew she was a dancer, starting when she was 11. For her, dance was a healing and power source. While she cherished it, always seeing herself as a dancer, she changed careers, got degrees and flourished. She shares her mentors and how they changed her life.  She now volunteers with an organization that accredits fire organizations. All her life lessons she lays out. 

Jane Duncan: Dancer, Educator, Contributor

As is the case for most dancers, we have a knowing from an early age that we are dancers. The blessing with that knowing, is that we always know who we are no matter who old, fat, or infirm we may become. I stopped trying to make my living as a dancer in my mid to late twenties but since then, I have danced on the edges of my life. In addition to dance as a primary definer, so is education. I have been an educator of adults since I was barely an adult myself beginning as a dance educator at Mount Royal College. At that time one of my students said to me, “Jane, what you are is an educator.” I was mortally offended! I thought, “I am a dancer!!” The student was right, though. I am also an educator. This understanding culminated in earning a doctorate in adult education and higher education leadership and lead me from teaching in post-secondary to administering education in emergency services to fulfill the need for a new challenge.  This experience resulted in an invitation to be appointed as a volunteer for an emergency services accreditation body. I have been contributing to that cause beginning in 2008. I have been given many gifts and giving back is what I am called to do.

Henriette shares how being an introvert made immigrating from Holland at 35 with young children a bigger challenge than for most. She had language issues and job difficulties. Her family stepped away from religion, to the disapproval of her Holland family. She talks about how naive they were about Canada. The evolution of beliefs, personal growth and resilience. Her passion for cars. Her unique volunteer work helping new mothers care for twins and triplets. It is a unique and diverse conversation with many insights on an immigrant’s view of Canada and belonging.


Henriette Bio
I moved to Calgary from The Netherlands with my husband and 2 sons in 2002. I struggled to find a job, being strangely over-qualified yet under-educated as immigrants often are, doing all kinds of different things and even dabbling with entrepreneurship, which did not suit me at all. In 2017, I retired and started taking courses in Sociology and, later, Women’s Gender studies at Athabasca University to learn about Canadian society and culture.  If I am not taking a course, I work as a volunteer with AHS to help out families with newborn twins or triplets in their homes.  I read lots of books, but also a Dutch newspaper, CBC.ca and Al Jazeera. My “motto” is: ”Explore everything, discard what is bad and integrate into your life what is good.” I am an avid traveller and Reiki Master. I love modern art. I make all important decisions using my intuition. I recently started painting after encouragement from my lovely and artistic daughters-in-law. 

Some words to describe me? Woman, thinker, feminist, student of and for life, introvert, reader, open-minded and fashionable.

As a career Executive Assistant supporting the highest echelons of international organizations, I became a self-styled ‘Moneypenney’ supporting entire C-suites and their Boards of Directors. My overarching performance objective was always to stay two steps ahead of the game - anticipate the need and have the solution(s) on hand, often before my execs themselves even realized what they needed.

My finely-honed administrative and management skills garnered over 4 decades were employed in high-profile international marketing and ad agencies (BBDO), in project and property management firms, and in the brewing(Big Rock), distilling (Eau Claire), and grocery (Co-op) industries. I additionally have served on Community Boards, Health & Safety Committees, and volunteered with the ‘Girl Guides of Canada’ for a 12-year period. 

Although Canadian-born, I was entirely educated in the UK, worked in central London for 8 years, then Calgary, which has now been my home these past 35 years. Pain, what a pain pain is. Carol has had several life events that triggered long-term pain. It has been a lot for one person. That she is remarkably outgoing, positive and smiling speaks to what she has learned so tricks and approaches to living with pain, even overcoming it enough that she can live a life, laugh often and engage the world.

Carol Pedersen:
I was born and raised in Calgary. I grew up in an environment of sexual and emotional abuse.  I survived Ovarian Cancer at the age of 20. I had 11 more abdominal surgeries to remove scar tissue and adhesions. I was on Morphine for 20 years to manage my pain; it was a living death.  I have lived with debilitating illness and severe chronic pain for over 30 years. 

In my youth, I was a ballroom dancer and Ice dancer. I became a hairdresser at 18. In my 30's, I went back to school and earned my legal secretarial degree. 

At 50, I chose natural methods to combat my pain and CBD cannabis oil was my miracle. I was doing well, getting my life back. Then in 2020, I was sexually assaulted, which derailed my recovery and left me with permanent damage.

I have endured decades of severe chronic pain and illness, which will limit me for the rest of my life. No matter how many challenges I encounter, I conquer them with a never give up attitude. I face each day with gratitude, humour, courage, faith, love, compassion, happiness, joy, a positive attitude, a strong mindset, hope, and strength. God built me into a warrior.

I have been so blessed with so many gifts in my life. Mark Laurie, and my photoshoot with him was one of them. It changed my life. It helped me to remove years of trauma and shame. 

I hope by sharing my story I can help others out the darkness I was trapped in for so many years.

Jessica grew up on a small farm in Southern Alberta before pursuing a career in Emergency Services as an Advanced Care Paramedic. She started the charitable organization Prairie Sky Equine Assisted Therapy in 2010 which provides equine facilitated wellness services to adults and kids with disabilities, youth at risk, and first responders and military personnel with PTSD. After her own long battle with PTSD, major depressive disorder and developmental trauma, Jessica dove into the field of psychedelics.

 After finding profound healing here, she became an advocate to bring psychedelics to those who need it and is currently the Director of Programming for a Psychedelic Assisted Therapy clinic".

In this chat with Amanda, I was surprised to learn she had gone through Calgary firefighter training but was too young to follow through so she trained with the Calgary Police Academy, passed before she decided that too was not for her. I had a delightful conversation with Laurie, she is insightful, light and engaging. Adele Engel had an interesting chat. She is 66 yet keeps getting reborn. Decades ago she choose a path of healing when confronted with a life changing devastating illness.  In our conversation she explains how she had an audience with the Dali lama, only to find he was not the most interesting, life changing person in the room.

Chelsea Jones, what a delight to chat with. Her easy smile and quick laugh arrive before you realize how sharp and creative her mind is. The thread of her life so far has been helping those disadvantaged restoring bodies and minds.  She has big goals, achieves them in what she calls small bits, yet for most people they would be considered long strides. Chelsea is humble in relating her Occupational Therapist work with the Canadian Armed Forces members. I believe the members of our forces deserve all the support we can give them for what they do for us, proud of her for that.

  Her photography will take your breath away, as it has many judges.

Chelsea Jones Bio

Chelsea is a diverse woman accomplished in both medical and artistic fields. She is brilliant in both. Having just earned her Ph.D. at the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine. Now she is a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Leiden University,  Netherlands going deeper into trauma-affected populations and novel interventions. She started and remains working with military and veteran personnel as an Occupational Therapists.  Even her dogs play their part as comfort dogs. 

 Her artistic expressions earned her PPOC’s Master of Photographic Arts (MPA). The crown is the rare award of a Fellow of PPOC with her thesis on Diversity and Inclusion in the Photographic Community. Her images frequently win regional and National salon awards. Chelsea holds 20 Accreditations in diverse photographic genres. 

 In front of all these accomplishments is a warm, caring woman easy to laugh and smile. Based in Edmonton with her family she has just started her stride to improve our world. She is the chair for PPOC’s National Accreditation program, a member of the PPOC National Diversity effort and PPOC-AB’s chair for their Inclusion effort

Sara De Raaf is a young woman with focus. Her go-to phrase is "Just give 'er" When she focuses on something it pretty much happens. 

She is driven by accountability and responsibility. She really carves out her own path, accepting and working with whatever comes her way. With all that, you would be surprised she is quiet and rather bashful. She works full time in a metal shop, but side hustles with a self-published magazine, models while increasing getting behind the lens in her new photography angle. In the middle of COVID, she leased studio space.. 

This mom of two has a  relationship with her two children, 21 and 11 that is open and honest. Sara cultivated the no topic is out of bounds, no judgement (although she does bit her tongue) and guidance.

Oh, and she lost the bodyweight of an entire person over the last 18 months. That changed a lot in her life.    Sara has not had it easy, doesn't really care, just pushes ahead with her dreams and plans.

I am a 37-year-old model from the small town of Brooks, Alberta, Canada, born and raised. I have always grown up in small towns most of my life and a few farms. So I am not afraid to get dirty. I consider myself a bit tomboy/redneck, but always have that girly side to me. Love to get out and have fun and get dirty. I graduated high school a year yearly and continued onto college after that, graduating with a Business and Accounting Diploma. And have been working since. I currently run a large machine shop in my hometown and love the hard work and getting my hands dirty and putting in any and all effort to get the job done. 

 I also have been working as a model for 6 years now and am looking to expand my modelling portfolio.  I have expanded further and taken up photography as well and have been doing that now for two years. Just recently opened my own studio located in Brooks.

 I am an all inked Girl with 13 Tattoos (including sleeves) and three piercings and always adding more tattoos. I have grown to love adding artwork to myself and believe that our bodies are our temples, and I am just decorating the walls. I am plus size and tall. I am a hard-working mother to two kids, from ages of adult to just mid-school age and enjoy every minute of it. I love to work hard and keep busy. I currently run the machine shop with some modelling on the side, always looking to expand more with my modelling. I want to show others that size does not matter, everyone is beautiful and takes confidence to show the world.

Barabara Arnold - In a bid to add English to her 3 base languages she left Holland at 18 to university in Vancouver. Culture shock, determination along with her embracing the moment and its opportunities, she overcame and stayed. Set up an international horseback vacation company, with interesting business before and aft. Leapt into painting, never small stuff, she started with big expressive wall pieces.  She has found her heart in art. Our world is a bit richer for it.

Barbara was born in The Netherlands and lived in Europe until she immigrated in 1981 to Canada. She lives and works in Vancouver.

After travelling extensively throughout Europe, South, Central and North America, Africa, and Asia, as well as working in the fields of, hospitality and travel industry and in interior design and photography and as a TV host, her search for a deeper spiritual meaning led her to a career in painting. After attending courses at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, in Vancouver, B.C., in addition to private training. Barbara is working full time as a mixed media artist and has a studio on Granville Island.

In 2017 Barbara wrote a coffee table book that was published by Granville Island publishing. The book offers short stories about her travels and a glimpse into her art.
Her work has been selected for many juried exhibitions and she holds solo exhibitions every year. Numerous of Barbara’s paintings have found a home in Europe, North America and Canada

 She also teaches private and semi-private art classes. In 2019 Barbara started her Art Fashion & Decor featuring Cashmere and Silk Scarves, decorative pillow covers featuring her artwork. Recently she added face masks to the collection and paints hand painted one-of-a-kind cards to send to that special person.

Barbara has a great passion for life, music, and nature, and has found that painting has become a necessity in her life. Painting gives her a feeling of harmony and balance. As it is in life, so it is in painting. She enjoys allowing her paintings to take on a life all their own and begins with a ‘get acquainted ‘period before seeing what the painting is about. The spontaneously abstract created pieces reveal a passion for colour and exploration, using methods that include acrylics, oils, wax, graphite, charcoal, antiquing processes, and inks.

Joanne Ruston's smile is constantly coming on. She just naturally  a comfortable person to be around. The biggest force that shaped her we discovered was being the first born. It was fascinating to see how that nurturing, inclusive leadership roll shaped her journey. At the high school job search Travel Agent seemed to fit her future vision. It was a perfect fit, she was amazing at, loved to travel, still does. Then suddenly she took a leap into basically an all male industry she knew nothing about. Feet first as a franchise owner. It was a struggle the first year but her makeup is one to succeed,

Michelle Askew is a sparkle from my deep past. She has had some novel twists in her life, She was adopted, adored her parents but did not feel connected to that full family bloodline, She found her birth mother and followed the family string to Ireland. She connected deeply with all those relations. Ironically the cove of her heritage Irish family matches her PEI Cove.

We talked about Michelle's 14 year old start in sales, her approach to it as a lifestyle. We explored her values that tie back into what makes her so good at sales. Of course we talked about her daughter and her mom. Juggling those two loves. From that is how, in obvious and positive ways COVID has changed our connections.

Michelle had travelled and worked overseas then called Calgary home. She worked in radio sales. She and her family fell in love with PEI and bought a cottage in 2008 they stopped living for a few weeks in the summer to become full time islanders.

Small places result in challenges so creating opportunities has been a full time challenge. The light in her life is her daughter Kennedy who is a well known Halifax DJ and car sales pro.

Covid has changed us forever. PEI has been fortunate with no hospital cases and no deaths but isolating on the island is challenging. Not seeing her daughter for a year despite being so close has been trying. Finding work, staying engaged, and focusing forward is a full time job as we all must adapt and be kind. We will get through this with kindness, integrity, creativity and love.

Jenna Star is one energetic woman. She is a going forward woman at all times. Jenna started her first sales business at 7 years old with an imaginary yard sale in her bedroom with dolls.  Her deals and arrangements are always a win-win. By the time she was 20 she owned a hair salon spa.

I have never met someone with some many irons in the fire that are real projects. She is kinetic, and so positive. Not that she has not had some serious bumps along the way that tested her. Laurie Anne is a woman with a fascinating past. Krista Kosta; The lessons she guides her Life Coached women came at a cost of her childhood. Some coaches draw on struggles, some need a magnifying glass to make them appear worthy of the title.

Traci really gets into things. With a degree in science, her hero was Chris Hatfield, she easily sees how things work.

Share Munoz, her unique deep roots as a ranchhand's daughter on a BC ranch far from anyone gave her a solid start. She grew up fearless; independent on her own feet. At four years she climbed on the back of an ornery bull that then wandered around. 

It's not so much that she has no fear, its that she does not see things as being fearful. 

From the ranch, she learned self-reliance, the value of a hard day's work, problem-solving and her big one, there is always a way around any problem.

In that vein, she left school at 16 to start her successful horse training company, toured North America. A tragedy that literally brought her to her knees changed all that. A story you have to hear. 

As a lesson in today's COVID19 crisis, she pivoted, dramatically. 

She now helps others tell their stories, shines a light on them with her husband and partner, Fran.

Traci Sparling-St Onge goes way back with me to the '80s. She has climbed over more obstacles, business and personal,  to arrive at her current place of Joy. She has risen from a survival existence with her first casualty being self-esteem.  She has overcome abuse that cumulated to life-threatening knifepoint. She admits to many bad choices. 

Yet, Traci's climb to her current peak of happiness was marked by her optimism with a soul that is truly beautiful. She remains one of the most generous and sharing people I know. 

She has learned as much from Shamans as she has health and fitness professionals. 

To say her journey has been rocky is being polite, to hear about the values she fixed on, her approaches to overcome and, well, her pure joy in the life she has and shares now could be transforming in itself.

Kristal Heise is this unique and very effective, mix of humour and business, of relaxed yet focused approach. A casual person who is very organized. Her medical depth gave her both critical attention to detail and empathy. From this came a love of research, spotting trends. Emee is very dear to me; she is such a novel delight. We have gone on long walks discussing the vagrancies of the universe. Her curious mind has poked into a lot of interesting quarters. She is one of the most aware and intentional women I know. 

I have seen her personality change from the invisible mechanic who decided to taste the world to this bold woman who takes nothing from anyone. She can really dress someone down too.
