Matt is back in The Matt Cave, and there is a lot to unpack in Utah sports this week. The Utah Mammoth are off to a strong start, BYU has a massive showdown with Notre Dame on deck, and Utah State somehow found a way to win a game that was anything but pretty.

The Utah Mammoth have looked like a legitimate force through the opening stretch of the NHL season. Matt breaks down the road trip against the Rangers, Devils, Bruins, and Sabres, examines the team's offensive firepower, and explains why Utah is starting to look like a wagon. But can this speed-driven team adjust when opponents manage to muck things up? And what should fans make of Karel Vejmelka's early-season performance?

On the college football side, Utah State escaped Washington State with a 17-16 win after a dominant defensive second half. Matt looks at what went right, what still needs work, and what awaits the Aggies down the road.

BYU picked up an impressive win over Iowa State, with Bear Bachmeier delivering a standout performance. But Matt has some questions about fourth-down decisions, punt returns, and the Cougars' passing offense as they prepare to face a highly ranked Notre Dame team. Can BYU pull off the upset, or are Cougar fans in for a long night?

Finally, Matt breaks down Utah's dominant performance against Kansas, the Utes' remaining schedule, and why the upcoming matchup with Houston could tell us a lot about how serious this team is as a contender. With the Holy War looming for both programs, the next few weeks could reshape the Big 12 race.

Plus, a quick look at Real Salt Lake's playoff outlook, because apparently the soccer gods aren't done testing everyone's patience.

Matt is back in the Matt Cave for another week of Utah sports, breaking down a rough night for Utah State, an ugly but important BYU win over TCU, and an absolutely electric start to the Utah Mammoth season.

Utah State got handled by Boise State, raising more questions about the Aggies' quarterback situation and whether Grady Brosterhous needs to be the unquestioned starter moving forward. Matt also looks ahead at Utah State's remaining schedule and whether a 6-6 season is still within reach.

BYU survived a sloppy, weather-soaked battle with TCU, but Matt has plenty of questions about the offense, the team's preparation coming out of a bye, and what happened when LJ Martin left the game with an injury. The defense, however, continues to impress, and Matt gives Kelly Poppinga plenty of credit for what the unit is doing up front.

Then there's the Utah Mammoth.

Two games into the season, Utah has outscored its opponents 10-1, Karel Vejmelka has a shutout, the power play and penalty kill are both clicking, and the Mammoth have shown a willingness to throw their weight around. Matt breaks down Dylan Guenther, Clayton Keller, Logan Cooley, the new additions, the team's physicality, and why this group has him very excited about what's ahead.

Plus, a quick look at the latest AP Top 25 rankings before Matt heads back into the Matt Cave for another week.

Matt is back with another episode of The Matt Cave Podcast, breaking down a busy Week 4 in Utah sports.

Utah is 4-0 after a 31-17 win over Iowa State, but the victory came with plenty to talk about, including questionable officiating, Utah's strong defensive performance, a turnover-free offense, and what the Utes' upcoming schedule looks like.

Utah State finally found the win column with a victory over Troy, and Matt takes a closer look at Grady Brosterhous' continued development at quarterback, the Aggies' suddenly productive rushing attack, and a Utah State defense that forced three turnovers.

Then it is time for the big one: a full Utah Mammoth season preview.

Matt breaks down the Mammoth's expectations for the upcoming season, the team's depth at center, the additions of Vincent Trocheck and Anders Lee, Daniil But's NHL readiness, Clayton Keller's potential to reach 100 points, Logan Cooley's importance to the team's playoff hopes, Dylan Guenther's scoring potential, and the biggest question mark on the roster: defensive depth.

Matt also looks around the Central Division and the rest of the Western Conference to see where Utah could fit in the playoff picture.

The hopes are high. The expectations are a little more measured. But after last season's playoff appearance, Matt believes the next step for the Utah Mammoth is making the playoffs and showing that they can win a postseason series.

Matt is back in the Matt Cave to break down a busy week of Utah sports, starting with college football.

He reacts to Utah's dominant 33-0 win over Utah State, including Devon Dampier's performance, Utah's suffocating defense, the Aggies' struggles running the football, and the frightening injury to Harrison Taggart. Matt also looks ahead at what's next for both Utah and Utah State and why he still believes the Aggies have a path to a bowl game.

Then it's on to BYU's 38-7 win over Colorado State. Matt breaks down LJ Martin's ridiculous rushing performance, the strength of BYU's offensive line, Bear Bachmeier's performance, the BYU defense, and the biggest question marks facing the Cougars as they head into a bye week.

The episode also includes a look at the latest AP Poll, where BYU sits at No. 9 and Utah at No. 15, before Matt turns his attention to the Utah Jazz and Keyonte George's five-year, $157.5 million extension.

Matt explains why the George extension makes sense for the Jazz, how it fits alongside the team's young core, and why the pairing of George and Darryn Peterson could create a dynamic backcourt as Utah looks to become competitive again.

Week 2 of the college football season is in the books, and Matt has plenty to talk about.

Utah absolutely dismantled Arkansas 43-10, with the defense shutting down the Razorbacks and the offense continuing to show just how dynamic this Utes team can be. Matt breaks down the running game, Devon Dampier, Wayshawn Parker, Byrd Ficklin and a Utah defense that has allowed just 24 points through two games.

Utah State was the surprise of the week. Matt expected Washington to run away with this one, but the Aggies hung around until the very end and nearly pulled off the upset. Three turnovers ultimately doomed Utah State, but the performance gave Matt even more reason to believe in his bowl-eligibility prediction.

BYU also impressed against Arizona. After a shaky first half defensively, the Cougars made major adjustments at halftime and completely shut down the Wildcats in the second half. Matt breaks down the changes from Kelley Poppinga, the pressure on Noah Fifita, Bear Bachmeier's performance and why this BYU team is starting to look like a legitimate College Football Playoff contender.

Then Matt takes a look at the latest AP Poll, where BYU jumped to No. 11 and Utah climbed to No. 17.

To wrap things up, Matt gives a quick update on the Utah Mammoth rookie showcase, including the team's 3-0 win over Vegas and the status of Tij Iginla and Caleb Desnoyers heading into main training camp.

It's another week of Utah sports, college football reactions and a little bit of AP Poll skepticism from the man cave.

Matt breaks down a busy Week 1 for Utah college football, including impressive performances from Utah and BYU and a rough opening loss for Utah State against Idaho State.

Utah looked dominant against Idaho, with Devon Dampier, the offense, and the defense providing plenty of reasons for optimism. Matt also looks at the areas the Utes still need to clean up before Big 12 play ramps up.

BYU opened the season with a strong performance against Utah Tech, with Bear Bachmeier, Legend Glasker, and the Cougars' tight ends standing out. Matt also examines BYU's special teams and pass rush concerns ahead of the Arizona game.

Utah State, meanwhile, suffered a disappointing 29-17 home loss to Idaho State. Matt explains why the Aggies' offense, turnovers, kicking game, and upcoming schedule should have fans concerned, while also arguing that it's still far too early to abandon his preseason prediction.

The episode then shifts to Real Salt Lake, who remain winless since the end of May after a 2-2 draw with LAFC. Matt breaks down RSL's defensive problems, injuries, tactical issues, and the challenges facing the club as the MLS playoff race continues.

It's Week 1, so there is still plenty of time for Utah, BYU, Utah State, and Real Salt Lake to figure things out.

Matt wraps up his 2026 college football previews with a look at the Utah State Aggies.

After a six-win season in 2025, Utah State enters a new-look Pac-12 with plenty of questions. The Aggies lost several key contributors, including their quarterback, offensive coordinator, Ike Taylor and John Miller, but Matt sees enough returning and incoming talent to believe Bronco Mendenhall can outperform expectations once again.

Matt breaks down Utah State's schedule, the transition to the Pac-12, the importance of the Washington State game, and the Aggies' chances of reaching bowl eligibility — and potentially backing their way into the Pac-12 Championship Game.

He also identifies the players who could determine Utah State's season, including quarterback McCae Hillstead, wide receiver Javon Robinson, running back Javen Jacobs, defensive back Brevin Hamblin, edge Adonis Jackson and linebacker Harrison Taggart.

The final prediction?

6-6, another bowl game, and a legitimate chance to finish in the top four of the Pac-12.

That might be considerably more optimistic than the preseason expectations, but Matt isn't exactly backing away from it.

Support the show

Matt breaks down the University of Utah's 2026 football season, from the transition away from Kyle Whittingham to Morgan Scalley's first season as head coach.

Coming off an 11-2 season that included a dominant 44-22 bowl victory over Nebraska, Utah returns plenty of talent, including quarterback Devin Dampier and running back Wayshawn Parker, while facing major questions along both the offensive and defensive lines.

Matt breaks down the schedule, the biggest position-group concerns, the quarterback and running back rooms, the new-look offensive line, the defensive front, special teams and the players who could determine how far the Utes go.

The schedule may be one of the biggest advantages Utah has in 2026. Matt sees Idaho, Arkansas, Utah State, Iowa State, Kansas, Colorado and Cincinnati as wins, with Houston and BYU representing the biggest tests of the regular season.

And then there's the prediction.

Matt believes Utah's floor is 10-2, sees an undefeated season as the ceiling and ultimately predicts an 11-1 record with a loss to BYU.

Could the Utes make a run at the College Football Playoff? Could Utah and BYU meet again in the Big 12 Championship Game?

Matt breaks it all down before looking ahead to the players and storylines that could define Utah's 2026 season.

Support the show

BYU football enters the 2026 season with expectations unlike anything the program has seen in years and Matt believes the Cougars have a legitimate path to an 11-1 record, another Big 12 Championship Game appearance and a spot in the College Football Playoff.

In this 2026 BYU Football Preview, Matt breaks down what the Cougars lost from last season, why the roster has enough continuity to remain near the top of the Big 12, and which position groups could determine how far this team goes.

The wide receiver room gets plenty of attention, including Jojo Phillips and Legend Glasker, while the completely rebuilt special teams unit emerges as one of the biggest concerns. Matt also looks at Bear Bachmeier's development, LJ Martin's importance to the offense, the talented tight end room featuring Walker Lyons and Roger Saleapaga, and the defensive players who could make a major impact.

The 2026 schedule gets a full breakdown as well, including Arizona, TCU, Notre Dame, UCF, Arizona State and Utah. Matt explains why Notre Dame will be the defining game of the regular season and why BYU could realistically enter the Big 12 Championship Game at 11-1.

The episode also includes a prediction that could be far more controversial than any win-loss projection: Matt believes the relationship between Brian Santiago and Kalani Sitake could lead to Sitake leaving BYU after the 2026 season.

The final prediction? BYU goes 11-1, returns to the Big 12 Championship Game and reaches the College Football Playoff.

The 2026 season is about to get very interesting.

Matt returns to the Matt Cave Podcast with another collection of Utah sports thoughts, covering Real Salt Lake, Zavier Gozo’s move to Crystal Palace, Cosmo the Cougar’s induction into the Mascot Hall of Fame, and the upcoming college football season.

Real Salt Lake responded to Zavier Gozo’s record-setting move to Crystal Palace with a dominant 4–0 victory over Atlante in the Leagues Cup. Matt breaks down what Gozo’s transfer means for RSL and why developing young players and selling them to bigger European clubs could be the path forward for a smaller MLS market.

Matt also looks at why Real Salt Lake needs to treat player development and major transfers as victories of their own, particularly with young players such as Diego Luna, Sergi Solans and Morgan Guilavogui potentially following Gozo toward bigger opportunities.

The episode also celebrates Cosmo the Cougar being inducted into the 2026 Mascot Hall of Fame alongside mascots including Mrs. Met and Goldie.

Real Salt Lake has stumbled out of the post-World Cup break after losses to LAFC and the Portland Timbers. Matt breaks down RSL's offensive struggles, the impact of red cards and injuries, the team's position in the Western Conference, and whether a continued slide could eventually force the club to consider selling major assets such as Diego Luna or Moïse Bombito.

The Utah Mammoth have made another major long-term commitment by signing defenseman John Marino to an eight-year, $54 million extension. Matt explains why the deal could be a smart piece of business for Utah, why the Mammoth's long-term player retention is a major change from the organization's Arizona Coyotes past, and what the roster could look like heading into next season.

Matt also takes a closer look at the Mammoth's biggest remaining roster questions, including the third defensive pairing, the crowded forward group, TJ Gignac's potential role, the futures of Michael Carcone and Kailer Yamamoto, and why Matt strongly disagrees with the decision to re-sign Barrett Hayton.

On the hardwood, the Utah Jazz continue their late-season slide, fully embracing the tank—but will it even matter in a lottery Matt believes is anything but fair? He breaks down the standings, scenarios, and why Jazz fans should already be bracing for disappointment.

Switching to the pitch, Real Salt Lake is off to a surprisingly strong start, sitting near the top of the Western Conference. Matt explores what’s working, why expectations should still be tempered, and whether this early success is sustainable.

To wrap things up, Matt highlights a hidden gem in gaming: SurrounDead—a solo-friendly survival experience that’s scratching the itch left by extraction shooters without the PvP frustration.

All that and more in another episode of The Matt Cave.

Matt returns with one of the most frustrated episodes of The Matt Cave Podcast yet.

With March Madness arriving and Utah sports delivering plenty of drama, Matt breaks down the biggest storylines across the state—from college basketball to the NHL playoff race.

The episode opens with a look at the University of Utah’s difficult basketball season and what comes next under head coach Alex Jensen. Matt also celebrates Utah State’s impressive Mountain West championship run and discusses where the Aggies could land in the NCAA Tournament. Meanwhile, BYU’s season ends with mixed emotions despite the incredible performance of AJ Dybantsa, who shattered Kevin Durant’s Big 12 tournament scoring records and solidified his status as a future NBA star.

From there, Matt turns his attention to the Utah Jazz and the ongoing debate around tanking in the NBA. He questions why Utah continues to receive national criticism when several other teams across the league are doing the exact same thing.

Real Salt Lake is one of the few bright spots in Utah sports right now. Despite low preseason expectations and injuries, RSL has started the MLS season strong with three straight wins and impressive performances from their young players.

Finally, Matt closes the show with a fiery rant about the Utah Mammoth, who are in the middle of a late-season collapse. A four-game losing streak, questionable coaching decisions, struggling goaltending, and costly penalties have put the team’s playoff hopes in serious danger.

This is an honest, passionate look at the current state of Utah sports—and Matt does not hold back.

The Utah Jazz continue their slide in the standings as the race for the NBA Draft Lottery heats up. Matt explains why he believes the NBA may already have its mind made up about where the Jazz will pick and why Utah seems to be the league’s current scapegoat for tanking.

College basketball season is wrapping up across the state. Matt reacts to Utah State winning the Mountain West regular season championship, BYU’s big win over Texas Tech that likely secured a March Madness berth, and Utah’s rebuilding season under Alex Jensen.

On the ice, the Utah Mammoth are surging during a crucial road trip while pushing toward the playoffs. Matt gives his full reaction to the NHL trade deadline, including the addition of Mackenzie Weegar and whether GM Bill Armstrong should have gone even bigger with a move for Robert Thomas.

Finally, Real Salt Lake keeps winning early in the MLS season. Matt explains why RSL’s road win in Atlanta is encouraging and what the team could look like once Diego Luna returns.

• Utah State’s late-game concerns and Mountain West outlook
• BYU’s roster construction debate, Kevin Young’s coaching evaluation, and whether the Cougars can still make a tournament run

From there, Matt turns to the Utah Mammoth and the frustration surrounding the Winter Olympics. Clayton Keller being repeatedly scratched, questionable coaching decisions, and missed opportunities leave Mammoth fans shaking their heads heading into the stretch run.

The episode wraps with a no-holds-barred rant on ESPN, the NBA, and what Matt argues is a decades-long double standard against the Utah Jazz. From selective outrage over tanking to dismissive national coverage, he lays out why Utah is constantly singled out—and why the league’s “integrity” argument doesn’t hold up.

In this episode of The Matt Cave Podcast, Matt breaks down a turbulent week in Utah sports, starting with BYU basketball’s alarming collapse at the worst possible time. Despite elite talent at the top, the Cougars’ flaws are being exposed — poor free throw shooting, disappearing secondary scorers, and a lack of depth that raises serious questions about their ceiling under Kevin Young.

Matt also examines Utah State’s continued dominance as the class of the Mountain West, contrasting the Aggies’ consistency with BYU’s unraveling. Utah basketball gets a reality check as well, as the program continues to search for direction in the modern Big 12 landscape.

On the pro side, the Utah Jazz finally make moves that matter. Matt explains why the recent trades signal the end of the rebuild, how Danny Ainge has positioned the franchise for real contention, and why this roster suddenly has a clear identity — and a future worth believing in.

The episode wraps with thoughts on the decline of Overwatch, gaming rebrands gone wrong, and how mismanagement can kill even the most beloved franchises.

This week on The Matt Cave Podcast, Matt breaks down a tough reality check for BYU basketball after a brutal Big 12 stretch reveals the team’s true ceiling. With expectations sky-high, Matt explains why BYU is still ahead of schedule and why perspective matters when an 18-year-old star is carrying the weight of a program.

Utah State, meanwhile, has officially separated itself as the class of the Mountain West. After a statement win over San Diego State, the Aggies look like legitimate favorites to win both the regular season and conference tournament, with multiple contributors stepping up at the right time.

Matt also dives into another maddening week for the Utah Mammoth, a team capable of trading punches with the NHL’s best but sabotaged by penalties, special teams failures, and preventable mistakes. From blown leads to a league-worst power play, Matt examines what’s holding the Mammoth back and whether a bold trade could change everything.

Then it’s time for the Jazz… and yeah, it’s not pretty. Matt unloads on the directionless tank, questions whether Utah is repeating the same mistakes with another volume-scoring guard, and explains why this rebuild feels fundamentally broken.

This week’s episode of The Matt Cave Podcast is packed with storylines across Utah sports.

The show opens with a full transfer portal breakdown across Utah State, Utah, and BYU — including why Kalani Sitake’s ability to retain elite talent has been one of the most impressive developments of the offseason. While there are still fair questions about BYU’s defensive coordinator hire, the overall roster retention and portal additions put the Cougars in an outstanding position heading into next season.

From there, the focus shifts to the Holy War on the hardwood, where BYU earns a hard-fought 89–84 win at the Huntsman Center in a rivalry game that lived up to its chaotic reputation. The episode breaks down what BYU did well, what still needs tightening, and why Utah — despite its Big 12 struggles — showed signs of real potential.

The spotlight then moves north to Logan, where Utah State basketball continues to be overlooked nationally. At 14–1, blowing out conference opponents and sharing offensive production, the Aggies look every bit like a Top-25 team and a serious Mountain West title contender.

There’s also a candid look at the Utah Jazz, whose struggles without Lauri Markkanen have turned patience into frustration, followed by an encouraging update on the Utah Mammoth, who have won four of their last five games and are entering a crucial homestand with playoff positioning firmly in sight.

From transfer portal chaos to rivalry intensity to pro teams moving in opposite directions, it’s a full Sunday spelunk into the state of Utah sports.

The first episode of 2026 is a full-state check-in on Utah sports — and it starts with BYU finally having real options.

Matt breaks down the Cougars’ defensive coordinator search and explains why this hire is different from past cycles, with deep dives on Shaun Nua, Vic So’oto, Gary Andersen, Justin Ena, and why an in-house move would be settling. From there, the focus shifts north to a University of Utah program in flux, examining the coaching exodus to Michigan, the loss of elite offensive line development, roster departures, and the pressure now facing Morgan Scalley.

The episode also tackles the Utah Mammoth’s maddening inconsistency, questioning roster construction, special teams accountability, and whether lingering Coyotes-era holdovers are preventing real progress — while giving a well-earned Olympic shoutout to Clayton Keller. The Utah Jazz’s directionless rebuild comes under fire next, followed by Real Salt Lake’s Ojeda sale, what it means financially, and why the January transfer window complicates attacking upgrades.

Finally, Matt closes with BYU basketball and the AJ Dybantsa show, breaking down elite production, turnover concerns, short rotation warning signs, and why this Cougar trio might be the best in the country.

This episode sets the tone for 2026: less patience, more accountability, and real expectations across Utah sports.

It’s the final Matt Cave Sunday of the year, so buckle up — because we’re hitting every major Utah team before we head into 2026.

Matt starts things off with bowl season, where Utah State gets a legit coin-flip matchup with Washington State, BYU gets a winnable showdown with Georgia Tech, and Utah walks into Kyle Whittingham’s last-ever game as a 16.5-point favorite in the Las Vegas. Then we jump to college hoops:

• Utah State looks like the class of the Mountain West.
• Utah gears up for Big 12 play with Arizona waiting.
• And BYU heads into conference play behind the 7–9 million dollar man AJ Dybantsa, who just dropped 35.

From there, we go pro: Real Salt Lake is quiet as usual, the Utah Jazz don’t play defense (seriously, not once under 100 allowed all season), and the Utah Mammoth sit just outside the wild card with a positive goal differential… but a real offensive problem.

And to close out 2025: a thank-you message straight from Matt to you.
This year was the hardest Matt has had since starting The Matt Cave — and also the most successful. You showed up, you shared the show, you supported it, and you helped it grow into something that opened doors Matt never thought he’d walk through.

This week’s episode of The Matt Cave Podcast opens with a deep dive into the University of Utah’s oddly worded announcement that Kyle Whittingham is “stepping down” — not retiring — and why the timing of that decision raises real questions. With a $500 million private equity partnership suddenly entering the picture, Matt breaks down why the language matters, why the silence around it is strange, and why the story may not be as simple as it seems.

From there, the show turns to bowl season — and whether it has meant anything for years now. Utah, BYU, and Utah State all earn postseason games, but opt-outs, transfers, and shifting incentives continue to erode what bowl games used to represent. Matt still walks through the matchups, expectations, and transfer portal implications, even while questioning why fans should care at all.

The episode wraps with a full reaction to The Game Awards, which finally felt like an actual awards show again. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 dominates the night for good reason, while the absence of Call of Duty, Destiny 2, and World of Warcraft sends a clear message about the current state of AAA and live-service gaming.

This week on The Matt Cave, Matt's doing a full post-mortem on Championship Weekend…and folks, woof barely covers it. BYU walked into a Texas Tech buzzsaw with a one-legged freshman quarterback and left with a reminder of what a real championship roster looks like. Kalani isn’t going anywhere (and never was), and the Cougars now have their blueprint for the future, whether they like it or not.

Then we move into college basketball, where the Utes are confusing, Utah State is quietly becoming a wagon, and BYU Hoops looks like the most legitimate program in the state. AJ Dybantsa is the real deal, Robert Wright is settling in, and this team could realistically hit the Elite Eight if depth doesn’t betray them.

The Jazz? Yeah…they stink. That’s the segment. (Fine, Matt talks more — but that’s the headline.)

We also dig into the Utah Mammoth, who somehow look like world-beaters one night and a rec-league drop-in squad the next. The power play is statistically the worst in hockey, and nothing seems close to changing. Vanecek even played a great game and still got hung out to dry. This team is testing the limits of Matt's sanity.

And finally — a long-awaited return of Matt’s Game Review Corner, featuring Dispatch. Think Telltale Games meets superhero management meets dating sim meets “hey this is actually really good.” It’s mature, it’s well-acted, it’s choice-driven, and it’s absolutely worth your time (if you’re an adult, or a parent willing to check the content first before handing it to your kid).

He breaks down Utah State’s collapse in peak Bronco Mendenhall fashion, Utah’s narrow escape against Kansas, and BYU’s early-morning sleepwalk that turned into a dominant win to reach 11–1 heading into Championship Week.

Matt then unloads on the College Football Playoff Committee — calling out the contradictions, the SEC favoritism, and the outright nonsense surrounding strength of record, game control, and why certain teams (looking at you, Notre Dame) stay ranked without earning it.

BYU men’s basketball also gets the spotlight as Matt recaps their tournament win in Orlando — affectionately renamed by him as the Mickey Mouse Chocolate Adventure Invitational. He breaks down why the trio of AJ DeBansa, Richie Saunders, and Rob Wright might be the most dangerous three-man unit in college basketball this year.

To close the show, Matt turns his attention to Utah Mammoth fans. With Logan Cooley injured, Clayton Keller playing through unimaginable personal tragedy, and the team grinding through a brutal schedule, Matt explains why this isn’t the time for panic — it’s the time for perspective.

Happy Thanksgiving, Spelunkers! 🦃 This week on The Matt Cave, Utah sports actually had a rare, beautiful moment — everybody won. BYU basketball handled Wisconsin in a revenge spot, Utah State became bowl eligible with a wild second-half turnaround, Utah pulled off a chaotic thriller against Kansas State, and BYU football got carried to victory by an absolutely monstrous performance from LJ Martin.

I break down:

• BYU men’s basketball locking down Wisconsin with shockingly elite defense
• Utah State shocking Fresno and keeping Mountain West title hopes alive
• Utah surviving a back-and-forth Big 12 shootout with a pick-two heard ‘round Rice-Eccles
• BYU football’s run-heavy win behind LJ Martin’s beast-mode stat line
• Why national pundits never give BYU or Utah respect (and why it’s lazy)

It’s a fun one. It’s a nerdy one. And it’s a thankful one.
 Wherever you’re celebrating this week, I hope it’s a good one. 🦃❤️

This week on The Matt Cave, Matt breaks down another eventful weekend in Utah sports, featuring decisive wins, late-season drama, and some much-needed perspective for Mammoth fans.

The episode opens with Utah State’s double-overtime loss to UNLV, a game that perfectly showcased the traditional Bronco Mendenhall script: competitive, gritty, and frustratingly close. With Fresno State and Boise State left, the Aggies still have a narrow path to bowl eligibility, but the margin for error is gone.

From there, Matt dives into Utah’s dominant rushing performance at Baylor, where the Utes powered their way to 380 yards on the ground. Despite offensive limitations, Utah continues to control games physically and remains in the Big 12 title conversation — though their postseason fate now hinges heavily on BYU vs. Cincinnati.

Next up is BYU’s blowout win over TCU, where the Cougars responded to last week’s embarrassment with urgency and emotion. Bear Bachmeier impressed, the defense overwhelmed TCU, and BYU now controls its path to the Big 12 Championship Game. The season comes down to the matchup with Cincinnati.

Matt then shifts to BYU Men’s Basketball and their near-upset of UConn in Boston — a performance that showed this young roster’s resilience and potential. Despite early injuries and cold shooting, the Cougars nearly stunned the defending champions.

The episode closes with the Utah Mammoth, who have hit their first real slump of the season. Matt breaks down why the panic from parts of the fanbase is unwarranted, how schedule imbalance has contributed to recent struggles, and why patience is essential in an 82-game NHL season.

Finally, he gives a quick review of Mega Bonk, a $10 Steam title that earns a full recommendation for its simplicity, humor, and replayability.

Another packed week, another deep spelunk into the world of Utah sports.

This weekend was one of those weekends in Utah sports.
BYU got humiliated on a national stage — again — and I’ve got some words for the coaches, the offensive line, and a fanbase that needs to calm down. Utah’s Big 12 hopes? Barely alive, but technically still breathing. Utah State? Quietly rolling and one win from bowl season.

Then we shift to hoops: BYU men’s basketball is fun again… but Rob Wright might be a black hole for the ball. I break down Kevin Young’s rotations and what needs to change before they meet real competition.

And finally, the Utah Mammoth are just trying to survive the most unfair schedule in hockey. Eight of nine games on the road? That’s absurd. I’m not panicking yet — but I’m definitely side-eyeing Ryan Smith’s “concert venue” priorities.

So grab your caffeine, because it’s a full spelunk through a messy weekend in the 801.

Devon Dampier proved the doubters wrong, Utah rolled a supposedly “ranked” Cincinnati squad, and I break down why the national media’s obsession with the Kelce's is the only reason the Bearcats were even in the conversation.

Then we pivot south to Provo, where BYU’s entire Big 12 season hangs on an early-morning slugfest with Texas Tech. I’ll explain why it’s the defining game for both BYU and Utah’s playoff paths, and why Cougar fans should be proud no matter what happens next.

We wrap with chaos in the AP Top 25 (Virginia? Louisville? Duke??) and some early men’s basketball previews:

Three out of four Utah teams came away with wins this weekend — and you know I’ve got takes.

I start with Utah State, who looked surprisingly competitive against Vanderbilt before SEC depth wore them down. But with Bryson Barnes settling in and John Miller anchoring the defense, the Aggies may have more juice this season than expected.

Then it’s over to Salt Lake City’s big boys: the Utes absolutely suffocated West Virginia on the road, though Devin Dampier’s turnover issues still loom large. The defense looks legit, but I’m still ranting about two-way players and risky play-calling.

BYU fans, rejoice. I thought the Cougars were in trouble against Colorado, but Bear Bachmeier and Aaron Roderick dialed up a creative game plan that turned the tide. Huge credit to linebackers Jack Kelly and Isaiah Glasker for wrecking Colorado’s rhythm.

RSL? It’s complicated. After back-to-back nightmares against LAFC, the Claret and Cobalt bounced back with a strong win over Austin FC — but the playoff math still looks grim.

And I close the cave this week with a dive into free gaming. With $70+ price tags becoming the norm, there are plenty of free (and actually fun) options to keep you gaming without draining your wallet — from The Finals and Marvel Rivals to MMORPG trials and card games.

This week in The Matt Cave, Matt tries to process two things he never thought he'd say in 2025: Real Salt Lake is in playoff position, and BYU Men’s Basketball is being hyped as a national title contender. No, seriously.

First, he breaks down RSL’s wild 2-1 win over San Jose, featuring two goals that were more “gifts” than greatness. Then it's time to dive into an ESPN article that has BYU ahead of blue bloods like Duke, Kansas, and Michigan State — a sentence 15-year-old Matt would never believe. AJ Dybantsa, transfer portal wins, and offensive firepower? What timeline is this?

Plus: A quick but funny Utah Mammoth update involving ESPN’s painfully slow name correction, and a deep dive into six video games worth your time in a pretty meh release year. Then it's Big 12 Media Days recap time: BYU and Utah showed up in full fluff mode, but there were still some nuggets to break down. Matt gives his honest take on Devin Dampier, Utah's new offense, Kalani Sitake's refreshing NIL perspective, and who he thinks should be QB1 for the Cougars (spoiler: it's not McCae Hillstead).

Matt’s back after the holiday weekend with a three-segment breakdown across soccer and hockey, starting with Real Salt Lake’s chaotic 3-2 win over St. Louis City FC. Two own goals, clueless defending, and somehow a win? Yeah, it’s that kind of year in Sandy.

Then it’s all eyes on the USMNT as Matt breaks down their undefeated Gold Cup run and explains why this “C team” is actually putting pressure on the World Cup roster. Three new locks, a goalie controversy, and a whole lot of grit.

Finally, the Utah Mammoth’s first real free agency period gets the Matt Cave treatment. No stars? No problem. Matt breaks down why leadership, playoff rings, and a patient strategy might be exactly what Utah needs to hit the postseason for the first time.

This week, Matt dives into the 2025 NBA and NHL Drafts, and for once, he’s giving himself a little credit. The Utah Jazz surprised fans by drafting Ace Bailey at #5, trading up for Walter Clayton Jr., and grabbing John Tonje in Round 2. He breaks down each pick, roasts ESPN’s anti-small-market narratives, and celebrates a rare aggressive move by Utah’s front office.

Then it’s over to the ice, where Utah Mammoth GM Bill Armstrong pulls off a blockbuster trade for JJ Peterka and follows it up with two big draft-day hits in Caleb Desnoyers (Matt called it) and Max Psenicka. Matt hands out grades, praise, and a little friendly sarcasm along the way. (While still mispronouncing hockey players names...)

Finally, Real Salt Lake didn’t lose to Sporting KC, without Diego Luna! Is the team finally stabilizing? Or are we just in the calm before the (transfer window) storm?
