Episode 23 - Halloween III: Season of the Witch - Genius or Bollocks?

In this episode, Val looks back on the troubled history of the film Halloween III: Season of the Witch.

It was a sequel that John Carpenter and Debra Hill didn't want to make. But they found inspiration in one of Carpenter's horror heroes - British science-fiction writer, Nigel Kneale.

In an audacious move, they decided to make a film unlike any other in the Halloween franchise. "Not a knife movie, but a pod movie," said Debra Hill.

Could they pull it off? As the production broke down in acrimony between Kneale and Carpenter, critics called it a disaster. Fans were divided. And the film has remained controversial ever since.

Episode 21 - Stephen King's Night Shift: The Movies

In this episode, Val looks back at Stephen King's first collection of short stories, "Night Shift" published in 1978.

This slim volume contained enough material to inspire movies, sequels, tv show episodes, segments in anthologies and even a Bollywood movie!

Val will look at seven of the feature film adaptations in turn before talking about the great man's awesome Dollar Baby programme which encourages young film-makers to adapt his work.

We'll feature one of those very film-makers - Julia Marchese. She has recently taken Stephen King up on this amazing opportunity. And we'll be providing you Willing Participants with the chance to help with her audacious venture!

Episode 18 - Telekinesis in Horror Movies or "Carrie White Burns in Hell"

Join Val once again as he digs through the back catalogue for films about telekinesis!

We start with a visit to the World Telekinesis Championships to see what would happen if you pitted a Firestarter against a Scanner!

With that out of the way, Val then discusses what makes Carrie such an outstanding and influential horror movie, before discussing some of the films that followed in its wake.

First of all, the campy, silly, funny tv film "The Initiation of Sarah" in which Shelley Winters gets to summon Satan and chew scenery at the same time. Then "The Medusa Touch" which sees Richard Burton attempting to use his gifts to DESTROY all those who displease him (hint: almost everyone).

Then we head to Australia for a bit of Ozpolitation with "Patrick" a fun movie about a man confined to a hospital bed who still manages to get out and about... somehow. And finally we look at "The Sender" in which the nightmares of a disturbed young man manifest themselves as reality for everyone around him.

We'll also briefly touch on "The Rage: Carrie 2" and the "Carrie" remake from 2013.

And there's the usual digressions, willy jokes and segments like PETS IN PERIL and CULTURAL DIFFERENCES CORNER.

You can't afford to miss this one. Mainly because it's, like, free.

Episode 17 - Hammer's Karnstein Trilogy or "Carmilla Comes A Cropper"

Greetings, Willing Participants! Come and join us for this wildly-Gothic, atmospheric episode of RPM!

This time Val delves into the blood-soaked world of Hammer films, to look at their Karnstein trilogy. Tales of female vampires who want to seduce you before draining your blood.

We open with Val's puerile and smutty tribute to Hammer movies, as he visits a Hammer tavern and talks to the barkeep about rude vampire ladies who may or may not look like Caroline Munro.

Once that silliness is out of the way, Val takes us to Karnstein castle itself, where he relates the story of Hammer's Karnstein films - the stars, the behind the scenes drama and the quality of the films themselves.

This episode is dedicated to the wonderful Peter Cushing and the fabulous Ingrid Pitt. Two horror stars who are sadly no longer with us, but whose rampant talent raises the level of "The Vampire Lovers" and "Twins of Evil" to Hammer classics.

Episode 16 - Anthony Perkins and Norman Bates: Psycho and Sequels

THERE ARE ONLY LIGHT SPOILERS OF THE FILMS, PSYCHO II, III AND IV.

In this episode, we look back over the four Psycho films which star Anthony Perkins and completely ignore Psycho 1998 because seriously, eff that film.

Val recounts the theory by critic Donald Spoto as to what Psycho 1960 is really all about, then moves swiftly on to the overlooked classic sequel Psycho II.

Anthony Perkins himself directed Psycho III, and Val explains why this eccentric, arthouse entry into the saga doesn't meet the standards of its predecessor but is still worth your time.

Finally, Henry (ET) Thomas gets a chance to don the dress in Psycho IV and Val reckons even that film adds a little something to the story.

Episode 14 - Early David Cronenberg: The "Squishy" Years

In this episode, Val explores the crazy, sticky, scary and maybe-misogynistic world of David Cronenberg.

We open at the Van Nostrand Institute for Scary Science Fiction Ideas where a bunch of science nerds have invented Oblivio-Cast, the next generation in podcasting which may or may not cause sexual insanity and/or head explosions.

With that silliness out of the way, Val reviews the first three films from the King of Body Horror. In "Shivers" a luxury apartment complex is taken over by rampant sex zombies.

In Cronenberg's second film, "Rabid", Marilyn Chambers runs amok with her vampire armpit, which is turning mild-mannered Canadians into drooling snot-monsters.

Finally, David Cronenberg works out his marital issues in "The Brood" which features Samantha Eggar as a woman who uses her womb to wreak revenge on those who have wronged her.

Episode 13 - Occult Cults: Sinister Satanists at the Cinema

Then Val reviews The Brotherhood of Satan from 1971, in which creepy children appear to be murdering their own parents with Satanic toys.

Following this, a look at Race With The Devil, a cross between Easy Rider and The Exorcist as Peter Fonda faces off against the force of darkness.

Episode 12 - Early John Carpenter Movies: The Night Before He Came Home

But this episode eschews all of that stuff. We take a look at the films that allowed John Carpenter to define his signature style, the look, the themes and the characters that typically show up in a John Carpenter film.

In this week's episode, Val gets to talk about a horror film about horror films!

"Tesis" is a film about why we like horror. Why stories of violence and death attract us, rather than repel us. Val gives us an overview of the plot and compares it to the Found Footage, Torture Porn and Giallo sub-genres.

This gives Val the opportunity to go off on an irrelevant bloody tangent and give a quick potted overview on Giallo movies, in case you have never bumped into Sergio Martino or Dario Argento before.

In fact, there are a lot of irrelevant tangents in this episode. Including sections on fake interviews with pretend Italians, snuff films, patronising interviewers and angry monkeys. Trust us, it will all make sense in he end.

Episode 10 - The Exorcist Saga, Part 2: The Gemini Killer Lives!

In this episode, Val pays a heartfelt tribute to director Renny Harlin before recapping the troubled history of the sequels to The Exorcist.

After his book "Legion" became a bestseller, William Peter Blatty returned to adapt the novel as "The Exorcist III" which is surprisingly great despite huge amounts of studio interference.

Inspired in part by a letter from a real-life serial killer, the original cut of The Exorcist III invokes the spirit of the original movie, but - unfortunately - did not contain an actual exorcism.

Oops.

Val explains why this film provides a great postscript to the original movie - but why that missing exorcism created all sorts of problems for poor Bill Blatty.

Then we move on to the story of the duelling Exorcist prequels. Once again, studio stupidity helps screw over The Exorcist franchise... but is there anything worthwhile in these two alternate versions of the same story?

There follows a chat about The Exorcist, and the effect this film had on Val the first time he saw it. Why it works so well for some people, while leaving others cold. And Val explains why this film scares him so badly that he wants to pee on the floor.

Then we move on to Exorcist II, and why John Boorman chose to make an anti-sequel to the original movie. And why that MIGHT NOT have been the best move...

Episode 8 - Terror in the Wilderness: Rituals and Just Before Dawn

In this episode, Val travels into the forest with an unwitting Willing Participant for a good old backwoods barbecue. But he's forgotten to pack any sausages...

Then we revisit the classic Canadian 1977 exploitation movie "Rituals" in which a group of doctors find themselves terrorised by an assailant who wishes to turn the terrain against the men.

Once we've finished with the doctors, Val then moves on to a familiar group of horny 1980's teenagers, ready to par-TAY to the max or whatever it was 1980's teens got up to, in the 1981 slasher "Just Before Dawn".

Unbeknownst to our teens, there's a man with a BIG knife and a bad attitude awaiting them.

Episode 7 - Hong Kong Horror: The Eyes Have It

In this episode Val dips a toe into Asian horror, by taking a look at The Pang Brother's 2002 film, "The Eye" from Hong Kong.

We'll talk about that first wave of J-Horror that took Hollywood by storm in the late 90's/early 2000's. How it led to an upsurge of interest in Asian horror generally, and how "The Eye" differs from the "Ring" and "Ju-On" franchises.

There will be a discussion on the effective sound design of "The Eye" and how it is SO NOT conducive to eating chocolate, unless one wishes to choke on a Malteser.

This episode will also feature another Pets in Peril Alert and a special surprise guest appearance from Vincent Price the Cat.

Finally, we'll take a look at "The Eye 2" which is a very different tale about a pregnant woman pursued by spirits.

Episode 6 - Dead & Buried: A Video Nasty Revisited

In this episode, Val visits the quaint little town of Potter's Bluff where something distinctly EERIE, yet also GORY, BLOODY, ICKY and MURDER-EY is also happening.

The locals of this town have a very peculiar habit of DOING TO DEATH any strangers. Which is at one and the same time, very entertaining for horror fans, yet also really bad news for the Potter's Bluff Tourism Department.

Val explores this strange little film, from the writers of "Alien", which focuses very much on the mechanics of death.

Also, "Dead and Buried" was classified as a "Video Nasty" in the UK. Val explains how this came about, and what it was like being a teenage horror fan back in the day.

Episode 5 - The Stepfather 1 & 2: "I JUST WANT TO TAKE CARE OF YOU!!"

In this episode Val revisits the 1987 slasher movie The Stepfather, only to discover that it's not really a slasher at all.

There's a lot of love for the star of the movie, Terry O'Quinn and a bit of 80's nostalgia-bashing. Seriously people, we had a Cold War, rioting and recession and don't let Wham! tell you otherwise.

Val also takes a quick look at the sequel "Stepfather II: Make Room for Daddy". But as "Stepfather III" and the remake don't star Terry, they are dead to us.
