Episode 163: Brad Towler, Fleurieu Charters

This week we have a huge guest who has made some SA Fishing history in the last few days, catching a barrel sized Southern Bluefin Tuna off the Fleurieu Peninsula. After first seeing some massive fish on the sounder and having his school Tuna gear spooled, he returned the next day with heavier tackle and sealed the deal! Brad gives us an insight into how hes been catching them over multiple trips out this week, plus talks us through a slower than normal School Tuna season but strong recent form on Whiting, Gummy sharks and reef species! This is a chat not to be missed and very timely with these fish only being caught for the first time this week!

Episode 162: Tyson Kain, Want To Fish Charters

This week we are joined by Tyson Kain for his third appearance on the podcast. Tyson is the skipper of Want To Fish Charters and works out of Port MacDonnell in the winter and Wirrina in the summer. Tys has had a ripper start to the season of giant Southern Bluefin Tuna, having caught 18 ‘Barrel’ sized tuna so far this season. He tells us about the recent Port MacDonnell Offshore Angling Comp, including his epic first day catching 7 Barrels. He also recalls an epic recent catch of a 100+ kilogram Mako Shark and also gives us a wrap up of what was a relatively slower season of fishing off Wirrina over the warmer months. Tyson is always very generous with his time and knowledge so is well worth a listen.

Episode 161: Adam from Aeroo Drones

This week we are joined by Adam from Aeroo Drones to chat about their unique Australian owned fishing drone. It can carry and deploy a 1kg bait out into the ocean, can fly in 50kmph winds and can capture it all in 4k video and 12 MP photos! We chat about Adam’s own fishing and talk about how the Aeroo company began and how it has grown, now having over 10,000 customers across Australia. Adam reported that SA was its 3rd biggest market and we discussed some of the great spots your could use it across the state, including the Coorong for Mulloway, Port Lincoln for sharks, Snapper across the state and even maybe a Tuna off Victor Harbor when they come in close to shore! 

We also discuss the big news in SA fishing this week, with the state government announcing changes to the bag limits of the 4 key species affected most by the Algal Bloom restrictions. Squidding is banned in both gulfs, the spatial closure on Whiting around the bottom of Yorkes is back for 3 months - but Spencer Gulf returns to full normal limits, garfish is closed in Gulf of St Vincents while crabbing limits are back to normal across the state. 

Our tackle item of the week is the new Ledge Runner lure from Shimano. This revolutionary lure comes in 2 sizes: 160 and 200mm and has the ability to swim at different depths, depending how you set the ring at the front of the lure + comes with a Hydro Control wind to maintain a stable swimming action.

Episode 160 - Codey, Spot On Port Lincoln

This week we are joined by Codey, the owner of Spot On in Port Lincoln, who we met recently while in town for the Tuna Classic. Codey talks us through his journey to owning the shop and talks us through the wide variety of fish on offer in the area including big Flathead and Samson Fish, both of which are fishing well at the moment. We also chat about the boom in jetty fishing recently after some $10,000 Salmon were recently tagged as a part of the Lets Go Fishing Competition that has been running across the state. We also chat a lot about Tuna, including his own barrel stories, his experience with the Port Lincoln Tuna Classic and the famous purple Halco lure he designed and has had great success with!

Episode 159: Steve, Pobs and Ted from NED

This week we have a massive episode wrapping up the 2026 Port Lincoln Tuna Classic! We are joined by Ted, Pobs and Steve who fished aboard NED, the winning boat in the Calcutta Competition! The boys tell us the story of their weekend and how they caught a big fish in an unusual way that netted them a $140k prize! The boys were super deserving winners, have great individual stories and came together at the last minute to form the winning combination!

We also run through the rest of the Competition which was a lot slower than in previous years, including lots of other prize winners, our own efforts to catch 3 Tuna across the weekend and announced the winner of the Socorro 10,000 from Shimano!

Episode 158: Andy Farrer  - Skipper in Pt Lincoln Tuna Classic & Asher Dezsery - RecFish SA

This week we are joined by Andy Farrer, Skipper of Catfish, who has only missed 3 events in the Port Lincoln Tuna Classics 20 year history. He talks us through some of his successful years, why he loves the competition and how he is preparing for this weekend's competition. Andy really sums up what is great about the Port Lincoln Tuna Classic, he competes really hard on the water and then enjoys the social side of the event, having a drink and bantering with other competitors as much as anyone!

We are also lucky to be joined for part of the news segment by Asher Dezsery from RecFish SA to discuss the announcements made by Peter Malinauskas in the lead up to the election. Asher fills us in on what is planned for the new Recreational Fishing Authority, what RecFish can do with further funding over the next 4 years and also touches on what the Opposition has proposed if they are successful and also an update on tagging of fish for future rounds of the Let’s Go Fishing Competition!

We also explain a competition we are running for our listeners to celebrate the Port Lincoln Tuna Classic, we are giving away a Shimano Socorro 10,000 (which is also our tackle item of the week) for whoever can get ‘closest to the pin’ of how many Tuna our boat will catch over the 2 day weekend!  Episode 157: Lincoln Kirby - Barra or Blue Charters, NT Million Dollar Barra Comp

This week we are joined by Lincoln Kirby, who runs the hugely successful Barra or Blue Charters in the NT. He is able to tell us about his own fishing journey, discuss what to expect on a day out fishing for Barra or in the Blue Water and also discusses the iconic Million Dollar Barra Competition. There are 11 Million Dollar Barra and a further 82 tagged fish worth $10k each still swimming around, with a further $100k up for grabs for the biggest of these tagged fish caught throughout March. This is an epic comp and something we would love to enter one year!

Episode 156 - Lucas Weaver 

This week we are joined by freshwater fishing guru Lucas Weaver. He is the RecFish SA Director for the Riverland and Reservoirs and has caught more Callop and Murray Cod than most! He has recently been involved in tagging a lot of fish for the ‘Lets Go Fishing Competition’ and also presented in the recent RecFish SA Forum on all things freshwater fishing. He is also heavily involved in the Lower Murray Lure Fishing Club and also tells us about some of his Saltwater catches to show his versatility!

Episode 155 Kane cross. Winner of round 2 of the Let’s Go Fishing Competition

Kane tells us the story of how he caught the winning fish and how he's going to spend the money as well as fills us in on his life as a Professional Cray Fisherman and some of his stories from beach fishing off the famous Long Beach! Episode 153: Danny Simpson

This week we are joined by Danny Simpson, a self employed consultant working widely across the Recreational Fishing Sector both here in SA and across Australia. Danny talks about his own fishing and some of the work he has done over recent years, having worked extensively throughout the sector, including Murray Cod management, implementing recreational fishing in our reservoirs and he currently represents the Rec fishing community on the Marine Scale Fishery Management Advisory Committee. Danny has also just joined the RecFish SA board having also been involved in the past and he also talks about the fun times he has had working part time at SportFishing Scene in recent years.

This week we are joined by Andy Burnell, the man behind the hugely popular Crab.e.cam social media account, where he documents heaps of amazing underwater footage from his GoPro mounted in his crab net. What started as a simple idea has grown to over 32k Facebook followers and over 175,000 youtube views. Andy talks us through how he sets up the go pro to get top quality video and photos, chats about Scuba and Free diving and talks us through what he has witnessed with the devastation of the algal bloom, but now luckily he is seeing some signs of improvement.

Episode 150: Paul Wilton, President of the Game Fishing Club of South Australia

This week we celebrate our big 150th episode with a great guest, Paul Wilton, the President of the Game Fishing Club of South Australia! Paul gives us an insight into how the club has changed and grown over recent years, some of the competitions they run including the Wirrina Tuna Slam in February and also talks about the social side to the Game Fishing Club. He has also caught plenty of fish himself and is even nice enough to invite us and any prospective new members to join them at the club for one of their monthly social nights.

Episode 149: Alicia Bolitho, Tackleworld Port Lincoln & Pt Augusta

This week we are joined by Alicia Bolitho, one half of the team behind Tackleworld Port Lincoln & Pt Augusta, along with partner Shane who has featured on the podcast already in episodes 111 and 123. Alicia has been heavily involved in all things Algal Bloom, representing the tackle industry in her role as the SA Board Member for AFTA, so it is great to hear how she is pushing the case of the local tackle shops. We also get an update on the great fishing that is currently on offer on the Eyre Peninsula, including massive Kingfish at Port Augusta, land based KGW at Port Lincoln and everything in between. Episode 148: Asher Dezsery

This week we are joined by RecFish SA CEO Asher Dezsery to discuss the disappointing news that recreational bag limits have been cut in both gulfs as a result of the Algal Bloom. Asher talks us through the limited notice they were given and how they are in ongoing discussions with the Government about this issue. While it is disappointing to see bag limits cut (particularly when commercial fishers in Spencer Gulf are unaffected) it is promising to hear that there are still a few positives including ongoing plans to buy out commercial licenses and further funding for fish stocking and creating new habitat. We also chat about the Lets Go Fishing Competition and hear some tips on how our listeners can have the best chance at winning one of the $10k prizes on offer.

He also runs us through the different types of tags and how they are used on different species, as well as talking about some of the huge distances tagged fish have travelled. We chat about the King George Whiting we recently caught, 1 week after it was tagged in the exact same location and also talk about the plans for some tagged fish to be released with cash prizes on offer to help the industry bounce back from the Algal Bloom.

Episode 146: Fraser Ellis MP, Member for Narungga

This week we are joined by Yorke Peninsula Politician Fraser Ellis to discuss a few big issues affecting fishing on Yorkes. The Marion Bay boat ramp has been a big news issue, after having nearly $4 million spent on a new ramp, ongoing issues have forced the Council to remove the walkway and pylons leaving it very similar to the  old ramp. Fraser gives us his own opinions on this and also encourages Councils to follow the lead of the Barrunga West Council and waive boat ramp fees to encourage tourism into their regions. We also discuss the Algal Bloom and its implications to tourism on Yorkes as well as forecast what this could mean for Summer and any potential restrictions on fishing to help the ecosystem bounce back.

Episode 145: Ben Calvert

This week we are joined by Ben Calvert, his second time on the podcast having previously joined us in episode 97 to chat about his success fishing Barra comps in Far North Queensland. This time we are discussing things closer to home, Ben is locked in to work for RecFish SA on their clinics this summer, teaching women and kids how to fish and also running some knot tying sessions. He also gives us a comprehensive guide on how to catch more Mulloway on the Coorong, including tips for using your sounder to find fish and how to modify soft plastics to get better action out of them!

Episode 144: Richard Hill, Savage Tackle

This week we are joined by Richard Hill, the new owner of Savage Tackle, a local SA company making top quality sinkers, burley pots and all things lead! Richard was kind enough to take us out fishing out from Port Hughes, in his beautiful boat, alongside previous owner and good mate Simon Hill. We chat about our day out, the great fishing on offer around Port Hughes at the moment as well as chatting about all things making sinkers!

Episode 143 Nathan Eatts - Cape Calamari

This week we are joined by Nathan Eatts, a sixth generation professional fisherman who runs his own business, Cape Calamari. Nathan fishes out from Cape Jervis and sells his Squid and other fish to a range of high quality Fleurieu Peninsula restaurants. The current Algal Bloom has hit Nathans business really hard, he hasn’t caught a single Squid since April 18 and has now run out of frozen stock to sell, he shares his story and uncertainty about the future. He also gives us some squidding tips and explains why the pro squidders catch so many more fish than we do!

Episode 142 : Jordan Saliba 

This week we are joined by Jordan Saliba, a repeat guest on the show after first joining us in episode 57, all the way back in May 2022. Jordan talks about some of the articles he has written for SA Angler, his work running fishing clinics for RecFish SA and how the Algal Bloom has been affecting his own fishing! He also talks to us about kayak fishing for squid, whiting and even his PB catch of a 91cm Kingfish, as well as sharing his own experience doing some Drone Fishing recently!

Episode 141: Jamie Crawford

This week we are joined by another repeat guest and regular SA Angler contributor Jamie Crawford from Port Lincoln, to discuss the variety of different species he targets with great success. We chat about flicking soft plastics for flathead, targeting table size bronze whalers, Eyre Peninsula King Fish, Callop from the Murray and big Salmon from the beaches around Port Lincoln. He shares plenty of tips on how to catch as many fish as he does and even lets us in on his go to soft plastic for big flathead: The Squidgies 110mm Ridge Shad.

A bit more positivity in the fishing report with plenty of Whiting on the western side of Yorkes, including Port Hughes Fishing Charters catching 60 KGW in 10 minutes! Elsewhere there are Salmon on the Fleurieu, plenty of freshwater species firing and Bream in the Port River also going well.

Episode 140: Darren James - Sportfishing scene 

This week we are joined by Darren, the manager of the states number one tackle shop: Sportfishing Scene. We chat about Darren’s own fishing, his history in the tackle industry and his transition to taking over the business from long time owner Ian Clift. We also discuss the impact the current Algal Bloom is having on the tackle industry as well as the longer term impact of the Snapper ban, but in better news, Darren has seen some more positivity in local fishing reports in recent days!

The news is again dominated by things relating the Algal bloom:

• More marine deaths across the state including barrel tuna at Glenelg, a dolphin at Carrickalinga, lots of Garfish around Ardrossan and an increased presence of the bloom in Spencer Gulf and the Eyre Peninsula. 
• Another dinoflagellate: ‘Sea Sparkle’ has been seen and can help clean up other more damaging algae!
• Fee relief for professional fisherman
• Online sharing of plankton data from the Department of Environment and Water. 

While in other news:

• The old Marion Bay boat ramp has been re opened while decisions are made on how to best manage the new ramp.
• Second Valley jetty damaged in more bad weather.
• More Murray River Crayfish stocking and acoustic tracking. 

Our tackle item of the week is the ‘Life Straw’ as suggested by listener Matt Kouimtzis and our tackle item includes Cliftys metro whiting, the Australian Salmon competition update from Elliston, Salmon on the Fleurieu and Callop still firing in the Murray. 

Episode 139: Lubin Pfeiffer and Asher Dezsery - RecFish SA Executive Officer

This week we are joined by Cod and freshwater fishing guru, Lubin Pfeiffer, back for his second appearance after first joining us all the way back in episode 21. We chat with Lubin about all the fishing he’s been up to including Bream comps in Victoria, NSW Murray Cod and local flathead on the West Coast. With the Algal Bloom limiting the options for saltwater fishing locally, Lubin shares some tips about those wanting to head to the fresh to catch a fish!

Asher joins us to discuss all of the news relevant to RecFish SA, and there has been a lot going on in this space:

• The ongoing algal bloom and how it is affecting fishing locally.
• Squid bag limits reduced to 12 per person.
• An increase in the Snapper bag limit in the states South East.
• Commercial Kingfish netting is restricted to 3 fish per day.
• Damaged jetties after the recent storms. 
• Cape Jervis master plan.

We also chat more about the algal bloom, including sharks washing up both metro and across the state, with Flinders Uni wanting to collect specimens for research. 

We feature the Shimano Speedmaster 24kg straight butt rod as our tackle item of the week, we got this on the back of our chat with Josh Carpenter in  episode 136 to target barrel tuna (if and when they arrive in better numbers.) The fishing report is pretty quiet with the Algae slowing fishing down, particularly in the Gulf of St Vincent. We couldn’t get a bite when targeting Whiting off O’Sullivans beach, while northern metro and Yorke Peninsula have been quiet too. Freshwater might be the best bet at the moment with some Callop and Murray Cod being caught in the Murray, as well as some smaller trout through the hills. 

Episode 138: RAD KI: Ro and Phil

This week we are joined by Ro and Phil, the team behind Research and Discovery Coastal Tours Kangaroo Island, or RAD KI for short. They run marine and land based tours on KI, combining tourism with citizen science and have been on the ground documenting and observing the effects of the Algal Bloom on the local environment.  We chat about what they have seen and how it has affected different animals and businesses on the Island, as well as talking about their business and what they love about living and working on Kangaroo Island. 

We also cover the news in South Australian fishing, including a couple of good news stories:

• An increase in bag limits for Snapper caught in the states South East.
• A new limit of 3 Kingfish caught by commercial netting has been introduced
• More weather related damage to jetties including Normanville, Kingston and the old jetty at Rapid Bay.
• Plus we talk about the ongoing effects of the algal bloom.

Episode 137: Ethan Yeo

This week we are joined by Ethan Yeo; gun spearfisherman, professional diver and social media star. Ethan has quickly gone from first finding his passion for spearfishing to working as diver on the Great Barrier Reef catching Crayfish, guiding in Tonga and collecting 11,000 Periwinkles per day when working in the states South East. He also has some epic recreational catches, including a 103kg Southern Bluefin Tuna and big Samson Fish and Kingfish locally, as well as plenty of epic tropical catches in queensland and overseas. He has grown a huge social media presence who love seeing his epic adventures and is up to 147 million views on youtube and has over 60,000 Instagram followers. It is great to hear all about both his professional and recreational diving both locally and abroad.

We also chat about all of the SA fishing news which largely centres around the storms we had last week, covering: 

• Damage to some local jetties and infrastructure.
• Will the storms help to disperse the Algal Bloom
• The storms look to have pushed some of the Algae into the Coorong - Hopefully the damage from this is minimal. 

Plus we chat about the Australian Salmon Fishing Competition in Elliston, a pilchard virus in Tasmania and a group that are awaiting and trying to minimise the impact of the expected arrival of a new bird flu to South Australia.

Plus we have a brief fishing report, with bad weather and Algae limiting a lot of fishing, but we are optimistic things might be on the up with winter Whiting, Australian Salmon and Barrel Tuna expected to fire again soon! Episode 136 - Josh Carpenter, Shimano Fishing Australia - Product Manager

This week we are joined by Josh Carpenter, Shimano’s Australian Product Manager. Josh is a guru when it comes to all things fishing tackle and shares how his career has progressed to having what many would consider a ‘dream job.’ Josh talks to us about his own love for ‘Technical Fishing’ and gives us heaps of information about some of Shimano’s great new products. We hear how the Ultegra reel puts many of the high end features into an affordable option, chat about the new Stella servicing plan and Josh helps us to pick out a barrel tuna combo that we plan to test out on a 100kg Tuna this winter. 

We also chat about all of the news in SA fishing, lots of which centres around the ongoing Algal Bloom, which continues to create havoc across the state and is now becoming more prominent in the mainstream media:

• A shark attack last week and another Great White spotted looking unwell in the marina at Wirrina.
• The government has released an update, without really releasing any new information.
• RecFish SA looking into stocking Estuary Perch into the Valley Lake at Mt Gambier. 
• Another incident of illegal squid fishing, this time off of Black Point on Yorke Peninsula.

We also chat about the SA fishing report, the barrel tuna seem to have moved across the border into Victoria, while a couple of unusual captures in the Port River - Snotty Trevally and Nannygai. Otherwise fishing has been quiet across the state with the algal bloom and/or changing seasons contributing to this.

Episode 135: Anton Covino, Shark Watch SA 

This week we are joined by Anton Covino, the man behind the Shark Watch SA pages on social media, who has been documenting shark sightings across SA for a number of years. He has  become increasingly busy in recent weeks with skyrocketing reports of sharks in shallow water and even beaching themselves, likely due to the ongoing Algal bloom and the sharks becoming unwell due to deoxygenated water. We find out how Anton started up Shark Watch SA, his theories on increasing shark sightings, how popular his recent shark posts have become and how he is minimising the risk of ‘fear mongering.’

As always, we have all of the latest news in SA fishing, including:

• An update on the ongoing algal bloom, with more sharks and even penguins dying, the north coast of KI is getting worse and Stansbury Oyster farms closed due to possible contamination. 
• Murray Cod released into the Valley Lake in Mount Gambier thanks to funding from RecFish SA.
• Council votes to allow fishing to continue in the freshwater lake at West Lakes. 

Our tackle item of the week is a simple, light weight net with fine mesh that we used over Easter for dabbing garfish. Another big fishing report including Port MacDonnell barrel tuna and other species in the annual Sportsfish Tournament, winter whiting are heating up, while Dizzy’s Dad Davo continues to clean up the squid on the Yorke Peninsula. 

Episode 134: Terry Magryn, Marion Bay boat ramp Engineer

This week we are joined by Terry Magryn, the main man behind Magryn Engineering who worked on the recent Marion Bay boat ramp. After some negative reports around weed building up on the ramp, it was good to chat with Terry about their role in the project. Terry was able to explain that there are a lot of competing issues with designing a new ramp, with wind, wave and weed as well as financial limits, preferences from the local council and guidelines from the South Australian Boating Facility Advisory Committee all impacting on the design. Terry gave us a much greater understanding of the challenges with this boat ramp and also touched on some of his other projects including the Whyalla Jetty.

• No cause was identified for fish deaths at SARDI facility last year. 
• Commercial pipi closure linked to algal bloom.
• Mt Gambier's Valley Lake set for Murray Cod stocking thanks to Recfish SA funding.

Episode 133: Mike Tyrrell - Survival First Aid & Faith Coleman - Update on Algal Bloom

This week we are joined by 2 great guests to chat about a couple of really important aspects of fishing!

Mike Tyrell from Survival First Aid joins us to chat about their innovative first aid kits and tells us all about the journey the family business has been on and how important having the right gear can be to potentially save a life. Their system is a bit different to a standard one size fits all system, with different equipment in specialised kits for all different activities - including fishing boat and 4WDing.

As a part of our news segment, we chat with ecologist Faith Coleman for a comprehensive update on the algal blooms causing fish kills across the state. Starting off around Waitpinga Beach on the Fleurieu Peninsula and now including cockle deaths at Goolwa and further fish kills on Kangaroo Island, southern Yorke Peninsula and even as far as the Eyre Peninsula. We find out the science and different factors that lead to this occurring, debunk some of the myths and try to hypothesise what could happen next! 

We also touch on other news including backlash from an altercation at West Lakes that has backfired for a couple of angry residents who confronted some young anglers and what the fishing community is doing to support the kids!

Episode 132: Steve, Ash and Popey review the Port Lincoln Tuna Classic

This week we are looking back on what was a hugely successful Port Lincoln Tuna Classic, that Dizzy fished in recently over the March long weekend. Steve and Ash have put in a mountain of work to put on another epic event, while Ash is also able to recount his time aboard the Vatican, owned by Popey; the team took out the Calcutta prize of $100k, while also catching the most fish and Champion overall angler. This is one of the best hauls a single boat could ever hope for and a huge testament to the skill and competitive spirit showed by the whole crew! Plus the boys are able to share the dates for next year events and give us a very early preview of the 2026 competition!

Episode 131: Port Lincoln Tuna Comp wrap up + Shane Mensforth from SA Angler + Marine Safety ‘Stay Afloat’

Episode 130: Brad Towler, Fleurieu Charters

This week we are joined by Brad Towler who has recently taken over Fleurieu Charters, while continuing to also run Towler Marine, which we discussed in detail when we previously spoke to Brad in episode 52. Running a pair of Clayton Gallant boats, Brad and his team have quickly found success on the Tuna and reef fish around the Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island. Brad talks to us about the transition into running the business, some memorable early catches and the plans for the future, which includes a winter spent fishing for barrel tuna out from Port Mac, while the other boat targets winter Whiting closer to home.

Episode 128 Ryan Stella Fishing

This week we are joined by Ryan Weidenhofer, the man behind Ryan’s Stella Fishing on Youtube and social media. Ryan spends lots of time on the bottom end of the Yorke Peninsula and targets a wide variety of species, documenting it all in video and photos which we love to see! He is someone who does a variety of different sorts of fishing, from targeting Tuna, Kingfish and Samson Fish offshore, to bread and butter species in shallow water, diving for Crays and is now looking to get into more land based angling.

Our tackle item of the week is the Sharkbanz Zeppelin, a device to deter sharks from stealing your catch, while we also chat about Dizzy’s attempt at Ceviche Whiting after a listener put us on to the idea!

Lots going on in the fishing report, Dizzy caught crabs with young Ned and the bag of Whiting with his dad over the long weekend, while Tuna are finally here in good numbers, a wrap of the Kingston Surf Fishing Comp and a small Murray Cod in Aroona Dam a good sign of breeding occurring. 

Episode 127  - Kane Reardon

This week we are joined by gun Victorian fisho and new TV fishing personality Kane Reardon. Kane and his good mate Aaron ‘Red’ Habgood (guest in episode 82) have recently launched their own fishing show ‘Red’s Fishing Adventures’ which you can find on 7 Plus. The show follows these 2 mates ticking fish and experiences off their bucket lists, taking them from their home in Victoria to Marlin in NSW, 2 episodes in Exmouth and even an episode chasing Samson Fish from Marion Bay in SA. We chat with Kane about his own fishing journey, his experiences and opinions on fishing in SA and talk about Reef Thief Lures and Bangers Teasers, a couple of local brands he is involved with.

We also discuss some of our social media discussions around whether Nannies are better eating than Whiting and different ways people cook their Whiting.

Episode 126: Wade Ball, Non Stop Fishing 

Happy New Years to all of our listeners, we hope you all had a good Christmas and got some fishing in during your time off, we start todays episode with our own fishing exploits over the festive season and some fishing new years resolutions!

This week we are joined by Wade Ball, who runs Non Stop Fishing, a youtube channel and social media accounts that document his own fishing all across the state. We love the fact that his fishing covers all parts of fishing in SA, from freshwater to bread and butter fishing to deep offshore jigging and sportfishing, Wade really ticks it all off. We chat about how he started his filming, his 2 boats, his recent trip to Streaky Bay and whats next on the agenda!

Episode 125: Lauren Douma + Simon and Gordon from Marine Safety

This week we have 3 great guests lined up to keep you all entertained over the Christmas and New Years break!

Firstly we chat with Lauren Douma, who has recently been elected to the RecFish SA board. She is sure to contribute plenty to the organisation, she is super enthusiastic about getting new people into fishing, including some disabled clients that she works with. Having only taken up fishing relatively recently she also brings a unique perspective to the board in that regard, she shares her journey into fishing and tells us how she wants to contribute to RecFish.

We are also joined by Simon Schwerdt and Gordon Panton from Marine Safety SA to chat about keeping everyone safe on the water, particularly over the busy summer holidays. Gordon (Manager marine Safety and Compliance) and Simon (Unit Manager Boating, safety and compliance) share some tips on how to keep your safety gear up to standard, talk us through planning a safe day out on the water and also talk about some common things people forget or get wrong. This is all super important information to keep everyone safe over Christmas and particularly relevant for anyone who doesnt fish as often as they would like!

Episode 124: Tom Hams from Port Hughes Fishing Charters

After changing careers from shearing to commercial fishing, Tom has now found his dream job taking over a successful charter business in a well renowned fishing region. Tom talks us through his fishing background and journey to taking over the business, what customers can expect on a day out and shares some of the coolest things he has seen on the water.

Episode 123: Shane Hodgens, Tackle World - Pt Augusta

This week we are joined by Shane Hodgens, who we have previously chatted to as the owner of the Tackle World store in Port Lincoln. This time he joins us from Pt Augusta, where they have opened a second store, initially as a pop up shop and now as a permanent fixture. Port Augusta has been the hot spot in SA fishing of late, with plenty of huge Kingfish being landed and just this week a Swordfish was filmed swimming very close to shore. Shane updates us on fishing across the whole of the Eyre Peninsula, talks about the process of opening a new store and gives his opinion about how the states Kingfish fishery would be best managed.

Episode 122 - Steve Toome and Ashley White - Port Lincoln Tuna Comp

This week we are joined by Steve Toome and Ashley White, the guys behind the hugely successful Port Lincoln Tuna Classic. After fishing in this comp earlier this year, we catch up with the boys to preview the 2025 comp, to be held on the March long weekend. The boys are also able to announce a recent community award the competition took out, and give us a run down of all of their fishing exploits off Port Lincoln over the winter months, including barrel tuna and fishing the deep water off the continental shelf.

This week we are joined by Ben Gibbs, Tournament Director at Bream Master SA and all around gun Fisho. Ben loves fishing from his tinny in The Coorong and targeting Mulloway off the beach at Salt Creek, but his real passion is for fishing from his kayak. He shares with us all of his kayak fishing exploits, both here and interstate, including the lead up to the 2024 Hobie Fishing Australian Championships that he is competing in.

This week we are joined by Adelaide United's number one fisherman and recent recruit Dylan Pierias. Dylan grew up in Victoria, before moving to NSW to continue his soccer career, where his love for fishing, particularly land based, really kicked off. He has recently moved to SA and has loved getting into the land based fishing over here and has already nailed some great catches including breaking the illusive metre Mulloway. He tells us all about his fishing journey and how he thinks SA fishing compares to the other states.

Episode 119: Michael Angelakis

This week we are joined by Michael Angelakis, one of the biggest names in the South Australian seafood industry. We hear the story of how the Angelakis family arrived in Australia from the Greek Islands in the 1920s and went from fishing on the Eyre Peninsula for Whiting to running a booming SA business employing 150 people. Michael tells us about his own journey including his time in business, his hugely successful TV program ‘Out of The Blue’ with Michael Keelan and how he is now enjoying his time as a recreational angler. We also chat about his favourite SA seafood dish, how he sees the management of fishing in SA and how he loves to cook plenty of the less sought after species,

The magazine has recently transitioned to a digital publication and it is great to hear all about this process and how successful it has been. Brett also tells us about his own fishing recently, most notably having success catching three 100+ kilogram Southern Bluefin Tuna with his dad off the Southern Yorke Peninsula. We chat about the increasing number of barrel size fish being caught all along the state and also hear from Brett about his thoughts on some of the big fishing issues in SA.

This week we are joined by Leigh Kuerschner, Treasurer at the Lower Murray Lure Fishing Club to fill us in all about the club and chat about what has been a great period of freshwater fishing recently. The club has recently held its AGM and has its Cod Closure Weekend coming up at the end of July, Leigh takes us through both the fishing and social sides to the club.

Episode 112 - Faith Coleman

This week we are joined by Faith Coleman, an ecologist, who knows more about the Coorong than just about anyone! She is a wealth of knowledge about how the system works and is able to shed some light on the recent fish kills in the Coorong’s South Lagoon which has made news in recent months. We also chat about the Coorong’s health overall, the shrinking sand dunes and hear what she thinks needs to be done to better manage the ecosystem.

This week we are joined by Shane Hodgens, the man behind one of the best tackle shops we’ve seen, in Tackle World Port Lincoln. Shane shares his journey into the tackle industry and how they have recently opened up in a huge new location as well as talks us through everything happening in fishing on the Eyre Peninsula. We discuss some of the amazing recent catches with a Swordfish caught last week, believed to be the first caught recreationally from Port Lincoln and also large numbers of 100+ kilogram tuna being caught.

Tyson give us a wrap up of the comp, including all the winners and a run down of his own week, which included the prize for the biggest tuna. Rick has caught heaps of impressive fish, 160cm + Kingfish, 140cm + Mulloway and heaps of big Samson Fish. We hear all about his fishing, from surf fishing the west coast, jigging around Greenly Island and his next pursuit of big Murray Cod. Rick attended the first of the RecFish SA Fishing Forums so is also able to give us a good run down of the night from an independent perspective.

This week we are joined by another big name in the Australian fishing scene, Jet Worsteling, the heir to the IFISH throne and gun young fisho! Having previously had his dad Paul on the show we were keen to get Jet’s perspective on fishing, filming the TV show and his experience in fishing in South Australia. Jet is still in school and has caught more fish than most of us could ever dream of so is well worth listening to!

Tom has recently joined the board of RecFish SA and is keen to contribute to the great work they have been doing over recent years. He is also studying Marine Biology and is looking to work full time in the sector in the years to come! With all this experience across a range of sectors, he is a great man to interview and someone who can teach us all a thing or two!

Episode 105: DC, Calcutta Winner - Port Lincoln Tuna Classic

We come to you fresh off an epic weekend at the Port Lincoln Tuna Classic. We have a comprehensive wrap up of the event with all the winners and a recap of everything that went on. A huge congratulations and thankyou to Steve Toome, Ash White and everyone else who helped put on an amazing weekend and competition. 

This week we are joined by DC (Dan Coleman), Skipper of Risky Business and winner of the Calcutta competition for biggest fish caught in the 2024 Port Lincoln Tuna Classic. DC who runs Southern Ocean Diving and Marine, a sponsor of the event, runs us through his weekend which included a broken boat which needed fixing on the first morning of the comp. Her fished with his 2 kids and brother in law and was a worthy winner of the big prize! We pick his brain and find out where they caught the fish and what was the lure that did the damage.

We also have a little bit of other news including a bridge in Port Augusta that is being pulled down instead of opened for rec fishing and an agenda of what RecFish SA and PIRSA are discussing at their bi-monthly meeting. 

The Shimano Speedmaster 10 is our tackle item of the week, this reel did the damage on heaps of Tuna over the weekend and is a great overhead reel which fished perfectly iin the 10kg mono competition rules.

Episode 103: James Manna and Mitch Hallyday

This week we have a bumper episode with 2 Massive guests

Firstly we chat with Mitch Hallyday as a part of our news segment. Mitch is fresh of winning the Wirrina Tuna Slam catching a 14.6kg fish on the Saturday, followed by another 14 kilo fish on the Sunday. Mitch gives us a run down on another excellent weekend put on by the Game Fishing Club of SA and even tells us where he managed to catch the winning fish. Mitch comes from an excellent fishing family, his wife Mel was one of the winners of the Coast 2 Coast competition in 2023 so we also try to find out who is the family's champion fisho!

We are also joined by James Manna, skipper of ‘Going Grey’ a beautiful Stabicraft 2400, who is kindly taking us out as a part of his crew in the Port Lincoln Tuna Comp over the March long weekend. We fished with James last weekend, catching 4 tuna so it’s great to be going into the comp with some form under the belt. We talk with James about his past experience in the Port Lincoln comp, our prep for this years competition and what we can expect as a couple of first timers in the competition.

Episode 102: Gavin Matthews

This week we are joined by Kangaroo Island local, Gavin, who joined us for an epic day of Tuna fishing on our recent week long trip over to KI. It was great to have some local knowledge on the day and awesome to have an expert local on the show to discuss all things KI fishing! He shares some of his best experiences fishing on the Island, and gives an update on the Tuna season they are having over there including his own recent success catching Tuna off Island Beach recently!

Episode 101: Josh Bland, RecFish SA Project Officer

This week we are joined by Josh who has recently joined  RecFish SA in their newly created role of Project Officer. This job combines Josh’s research background with his love of fishing and will work closely with Executive Officer Asher, working on citizen science projects and everything else linking rec fishing and science. We find out about Josh’s background and some of his fishing highlights and also touch on some of his early work with RecFish including citizen tuna tagging, an early review of whether yellowfin whiting numbers are down and also discuss why the tuna season has been slow so far this summer.

This week we are joined by Steven and Ashley, the 2 guys who are busily preparing to run the Port Lincoln Tuna Comp in March this year. We are super excited to be fishing the comp this year so its great to hear from 2 experts about what to expect and how we can best prepare for the comp! Episode 98: Ryan from Reef Encounters

This week we are joined by Ryan, the skipper of Reef Encounters, one of the states best fishing charters, operating out of the Southern Yorke Peninsula. Ryan last joined us back in episode 41 and it is great to hear about all that is new in his world, including the run of barrel Bluefin Tuna that ran along the Yorkes coast this winter and how he went targeting Dogtooth Tuna in Vanuatu.  It is also great to hear about the pressure of taking IFish out filming for the show and hear about some of his recent fishing success this season.

Episode 97: Ben Calvert

This week we are joined by a South Aussie Fisho who has taken his fishing talents onto the national stage, competing and having a huge amount of success in Barra Comps in Northern Queensland. Ben has really cracked the code on these iconic fish, he placed 9th overall in the Australian Bass Tournaments Barra Series and was the Runner Up in the Mackay Tournament Anglers Grand Final, fishing largely against locals who have done this for years. We chat about his journey and travels, what he has learnt while competing, talk about his boat fit out and also chat about the local fishing scene and what he is looking forward to over Summer in SA.

We also are pumped to officially launch our 100th episode celebration on Jan 21 which we hope a heap of our listeners can come along to!

This week we are lucky to be joined by Australian Test Wicketkeeper, Alex Carey. Alex is a keen fisherman, having grown up fishing for Snapper around Port Hughes and has very recently bought his dream family boat a Northbank 600C, which we are keen to hear all about. Episode 95: Boomer Anchors

This week we are joined by Duncan Webster, the man behind this innovative product. Duncan designed the anchor after being frustrated at losing anchors when getting them stuck on reefy bottom while fishing the Queensland coast where he lives. The anchor has a breakaway system, meaning when the anchor is stuck, extra motor pressure will collapse the anchor via a shear pin, releasing it from the reef; it can then have a new shear pin inserted and can be used again straight away! We have a great chat with Duncan about how the idea came about, the different steps in improving the anchor and growing the business and also chat about his own fishing!

This week we are very lucky to have the South Australian Opposition Leader David Speirs join us to chat about all things rec fishing. David was instrumental in getting the local reservoirs opened to fishing when he was previously the States Environment Minister, a project that he is really proud of and one that has no doubt been hugely successful. As well as discussing this, we also touch on all of the big issues in SA fishing, including Snapper, rec fishing license, spending on rec fishing and some of the infrastructure across the state.

This week we are joined by Rob Cuming, who has recently sold Northbank Boats, a company he has grown into one of Australia’s leading fibreglass boat brands over the past 20 years. This has certainly been bitter sweet for Rob, he still loves the brand and the boats, and is continuing to work with new owner Andrew Harris. He will also continue to run Christies Beach Marine. We have a great chat with Rob about how the industry has changed and what is new, how the business has grown and a bit about his own fishing pursuits.

Episode 89: Josh Davey

This week we are joined again by Josh Davey, who first featured on the podcast, way back in episode 37. Josh is a marine biologist by trade, but is also a gun fisherman having success across all areas of SA fishing, from reservoir natives in his kayak, to Tuna and Kingfish offshore and plenty of Squid and Whiting for the table.  This week we chat with Jeremy Ievins, a Port Macdonnell commercial lobster fisherman, who is on the committee for the Southern Coast Ocean Care Group, as the fishing and community representative. The group is fighting hard against a proposed offshore windfarm off the coast of Port Macdonnell and recently attended a meeting in Canberra with Chris Bowen, the Minister for Climate Change and Energy of Australia. Episode 83: Herb and Spida from ‘The Anglers Podcast’

This week we are doing a combined guest segment with ‘The Anglers’, a podcast similar to ours based in the Gold Coast. Former AFL Footballer Spida Everett and his fishing loving mate Herb host their own weekly show and it is great to hear their own fishing stories,  compare SA and Queensland fishing and hear some classic stories about the fishing comps they have entered!

Episode 82: Aaron ‘Red’ Habgood

This week we are lucky enough to talk with one of Australia’s premier fisherman Aaron ‘Red’ Habgood. ‘Red’ is one half of the weekly SEN Fishing show ‘Reel Adventures’ which he hosts with Geelong Footballer Patrick Dangerfield. He also runs Saltguide which is a membership based platform for recreational anglers in Victoria, which features GPS marks, fishing reports, how to videos and expert tips to help get the most out of your time on the water. We could of talked fishing with Aaron for hours, but managed to jam plenty into our chat, including barrel tuna, tips for fishing with young kids and all about his journey in the fishing industry.

Episode 81: Ian Clift, Sportsfishing Scene 

This week we are lucky enough to be joined by and absolute icon in SA Fishing. Ian Clift is the man behind Sportsfishing Scene at Cavan, which has been one of the state’s leading independent tackle stores since 1981. Clifty has seen the ups and downs of the tackle industry over a number of years, and along with his team, has the best advice on what you need to catch anything from Salmon Trout in the Port River to Barrel Tuna at Port MacDonnell. We chat about how the industry has changed, the effect on the Snapper ban, talk about the reel and rod maintenance that Sportsfishing Scene, and of course talk about all of Cliftys fishing experience around Australia and the world.

Episode 80: Kristin Goodchild

This week we are joined by Kristin Goodchild, a die hard fisho who also loves camping, four wheel driving and the great outdoors. She has recently been appointed as a RecFish SA Director and is a great representative of the female fishing community. We chat all about her own fishing, her journey to joining RecFish and talk about her huge presence on social media and youtube!

Episode 79: Indy Thompson, Tuna Champions

This week we are joined by a very special guest, Indy Thompson, a Marine Scientist and Project Manager at Tuna Champions. Indy tells us about the great work that the Tuna Champions is doing to promote best practices to catch Tuna and then either respect the catch and make the most of the flesh, or alternatively return the tuna with the best chance of survival. Plus we hear all about her own journey in fishing, some of her most memorable catches and some of the unique things about how we target Tuna here in SA.

We also debrief on our own fishing adventures over Easter, Rohdey was fishing freshwater while on a family houseboat holiday, while Dizz did well on the Yorke Peninsula Squid. The other big highlight of the fishing report is Want To Fish Charters catching plenty of barrel tuna out of Portland.

Episode 78: Katrine Hildyard and Kelly Wise 

This week we are lucky enough to have 2 excellent guests. Firstly we are joined by Katrine Hildyard, the Member for Reynell in Adelaide’s southern suburbs and also the Minister for Sport and Recreation. It was great to hear about some fishing related news in her local area including an update on the O’Sullivans Beach boat ramp and friend of the show Mark Mills winning the Citizen of the Year for the Onkaparinga Council. We also chatted about wider fishing issues such as additional funding that is available now fishing is recognised as a sport, a bit of an update on Snapper and discuss the upcoming RecFish SA Fishing Adventure Day

We are also joined by Kelly Wise, Skipper of ‘The Salty One’, the winning boat in the recent Port Lincoln Tuna Comp. Kelly gives a great wrap up of the competition, tells the story of catching the winning fish and gives a great review if what sounded like an epic weekend away for all competitors.

Episode 77: Dr Crystal Beckman, SARDI

This week we are joined by Dr Crystal Beckman, who is a Research Scientist at SARDI and was involved in the recently released ‘Survey of Recreational Fishing in South Australia in 2021-22.’ It was great to chat with Dr Beckman about how the research was conducted, some of the interesting findings and what this means for rec fishing into the future.

We also discuss our recent week away fishing with our families to Yorke Peninsula, including catching plenty of whiting, squid, scallops, crabs and crayfish + one big fail, a near ‘Donut’ trip to Althorpe Island off Marion Bay. Our tackle item if the week is the Shimano Sephia Clinch Boost squid jig, in Keimura White colour, which did the damage when we were fishing in long cork weed off Pine Point.

Episode 76: Tyson Kain, Want To Fish Charters 

This week we are joined by Tyson Kain, a good friend of the show, who has recently taken over the hugely successful ‘Want To Fish’ Charters. Tyson has spent plenty of time skippering boats out from his home town of Port MacDonnell and has put plenty of keen anglers onto some barrel tuna over the years. He is now splitting his time between fishing out of Wirrina in the summer and the South East in the Winter. We fished with Tys in the Coast 2 Coast Tuna Competition and had a ripper day out catching heaps of fish. We chat all things tuna fishing, what to expect on a day out with ‘Want To Fish’ and  hear about the differences and challenges in fishing 2 very different locations.

Episode 75: Wil Richards

This week we are joined by Will Richards, who won the Grand Champion prize at the Coast 2 Coast Tuna Comp for the largest fish in a boat over 6m, with his boat weighing in at 16.95kg gutted. Will and his team ‘Team Unreel’ travelled a long way out to Sanders Bank in the rough weather on the Saturday for only a few small fish, before fishing closer to home on the Sunday and landing the winning fish quite closer to the boat ramp! Will is a Kingston local, with lots of experience fishing for big Kingfish in the area and even hooked a barrel when the fish came through that area a few years ago. Wills family runs the local Ampol Roadhouse turned tackle shop and have scales to weigh in big Mulloway from the Coorong as well as all your  bait, tackle and local fishing advice. We are heading down that way next weekend and hoping to get out with Will for a fish if the weather plays the game!

Episode 74: Port Lincoln Tuna Comp Preview

This week we are joined by Steven Toome and Ashley White, who have taken over as organisers of the 2023 Port Lincoln Tuna Classic. We hear about the boys fishing backgrounds and also get a comprehensive preview of the comp, to be held in late March. The event not only produces heaps of Tuna every year, it has amazing prizes and also has a great social aspect, including dinners pre and post the comp and an anchorage set up for the Saturday night aboard the Tacoma – a beautiful, 1951 original Tuna boat.

We also announce the winners of our Summer Competition, with great prizes from Shimano, Troll So Hard Lures and Savage Tackle, you’ll have to tune in to be the first to know who has won!

Episode 72: Oli’s Squidding

This week we are joined by Oli Wood from Oli’s Squidding Page on Instagram and Youtube to discuss all things Cephalopods. Oli gives us some of his tips for maximising our squidding, including lure selection, some of his favourite locations and his retrieval technique. We also discuss his new Kayak and how he fishes with this, his experience fishing the flats for Yellowfin Whiting and some of his encounters with Kingfish off various jetties around the state.

This week we are joined by Flacky from Troll So Hard Lures to discuss the start of this summers run of Southern Bluefin Tuna. It has been a bit of a slower start to the season this year and we discuss potential reasons for this, including the effect the floodwater leaving the Murray Mouth could have on fishing out of Victor Harbor this Summer. Flacky is confident the Tuna will fire soon as the weather continues to warm up, so it is great to get some go to lures and tips off him.

Episode 70: Asher Dezsery - Executive Officer of RecFish SA

This week has obviously been a disappointing week in SA Fishing, with the news of the Snapper ban being extended until June 30, 2026. We have been lucky enough to have RecFish SA’s new Executive Officer Asher Dezsery join us to discuss this announcement and what it means for all us recreational fishos going forward. We also discuss the role itself, Asher’s background in work and fishing and what else is on the agenda at RecFish.

Episode 68: Rachel Weeks, Seeds For Snapper

This week we are joined by Rachel Weeks, Project Manager at OzFish, currently working on the Seeds For Snapper Seagrass Restoration. This is a project which is a project run by OzFish with the support of Green Adelaide, Hills and Fleurieu Landscape Board  and BCF, where volunteers collect Posidonia seagrass seeds, which are then organised, put into biodegradable sand bags and then placed back into the ocean to help re grow SA’s Seagrass meadows. This is such an important project for fishing in SA, as these seagrasses provide habitat for Snapper, squid and other species. It is great to hear all the background to the project, hear how the operation is run and how you can get involved.

 This week we are joined by Jordan Saliba, the man behind the ‘Jordan SA Fishing page’ on Instagram, Facebook, Youtube and TikTok. Jordan’s a keen SA fisherman with plenty of knowledge, catching plenty of squid and fish both land based and in his Kayak. He is very active on social media, producing plenty of content, he has also written an article for SA Angler in the November/December edition last year. Jordan has formed relationships with some great brands including Mick’s Jiggers and Strikerz Fish Scents. We had plenty to chat about with Jordan and look forward to following him in the future!

Episode 56: Charity ‘Chaz’ Selleck

This week we are joined by gun female fisho Chaz Selleck to discuss her fishing story and the recent announcement that she will be representing female anglers as a regular contributor to SA Angler Magazine. Chaz grew up fishing in the South East of the state, before recently moving to Port Lincoln where she has continued her fishing success. This gives her a great overview of all that fishing in SA has to offer. We talk about the growth of female fishing and her recent success catching Eyre Peninsula Bronze Whaler Sharks, with the picture of her success making the front cover of the March/April edition of SA Angler.

This week we are joined by Barry Brown, the Chairperson of RecFish SA. We were super excited to chat with Barry about how the newly elected Labor Government will change the fishing landscape in SA. The Malinauskas State Government promised to make RecFish SA an independent voice for recreational fishing  as well as pledging $200k of funding to the organisation. We chat with barry about what all this means, including what the money will be spent on, how they plan to work with the new government and what this means for the MRFAC. Plus we talk about Barry’s own fishing experience and hear about his journey to holding this position.

This week we are joined by freshwater fishing guru Chad Soper. We chat all things fishing with Chad, including  some of his best catches and how people can get involved in kayak fishing for natives. We even get some tips on the best lures to help our own strike rate when fishing the Happy Valley Reservoir for Cod.

Episode 48: Dave Scholefield

 This week we are joined by Dave Scholefield, the President of the Gulf Skindivers Club of SA, to discuss all things spear fishing in SA, including this weeks State Titles being held at Kangaroo Island. We hear about some of his best catches both when spearfishing and with a rod and reel, learn about how a spear diving competition is run and he tells us his best shark story. 

Another highlight of this weeks episode is discussing our second article in the recently released January/February edition of SA Angler, a recap of our recent trip to Streaky Bay and Port Lincoln. Episode 47: Christmas party/Year in Review

In our final episode for 2021 we celebrate all the great things that have happened in fishing over the past 12 months. We share our Oranges and Lemons for the whole year, discuss our fishing plans over Christmas and New Years and talk about how to get your hands on the new Grey Caps – They are now stocked at Let’s Go Fishin at Christies Beach.  

We can also share the exciting news that we are both expecting babies with our partners Lucy and Millie in early 2022!

Episode 46 - Matt Vlachoulis and Dan Waye

In episode 46 we are lucky enough to be joined by two great guests to discuss different areas of Rec Fishing in SA. 

Our first guest, Matt Vlachoulis, recently came 2nd in the Adelaide Game Fishing Club Kingfish competition with a 132 cm Monster! We chat about Matt’s experience fishing around the upper Spencer Gulf, catching heaps of Kings both land based and in the boat. We also ask his opinion on some of the big issues in SA Fishing including catch and release, commercial Kingfishing and hear how Matt would hate to see a repeat of the Snapper closures.

We are also joined by friend of the show, Dan Waye (aka The Fishing Guru), who has been instrumental in getting fishing up and running in the Happy Valley Reservoir. The fishery has been stocked with over 1000 big Murray Cod and was opened to the public on the weekend! Dan tells us about the opening weekend, which was hugely successful with  massive numbers of people attending and heaps of Murray Cod successfully caught! He tells us what you need to bring to handle and safely release these fish (which are protected and must be looked after!) and gives us the inside word on what lures are doing the damage!

We also discuss the new Marine Scalefish Advisory Committee, proposed changes to some Marine parks, give an update on the Reeling in Junior Anglers Program and discuss the delayed start to the local Tuna Season!

Episode 45: Tim Doyle

This week we are lucky enough to be joined by Tim Doyle, who is one of four keen SA Fishos who has recently been voted to join the MRFAC. Tim is Eyre Peninsula local and has won the Port Lincoln Anglers Championship three times, outlining his fishing credentials. He tells us about his fishing journey, how he went about getting onto the MRFAC and his thoughts on some important issues in the state; a recreational fishing license and netting for kingfish.

As always we also have all the other big news in SA Fishing, including new PIRSA reporting, an update on the illness caused by Coffin Bay Oysters, the sad passing of fishing legend Rolph Czabayski.

Episode 44 – Rod Cross, SquidEzy

This week we are joined by Rod Cross, a local man behind the SquidEzy tool, that makes it a lot quicker and easier to clean squid. Rod talks about his journey from having an idea, to building prototypes, to manufacturing and how he now stocks most of the big tackle shops all across Australia. He even featured his idea on ‘Shark Tank’. Rod also talks about his love of fishing and shares a few of his memorable fishing stories. 

We also discuss the second half of our Eyre Peninsula trip, including a good session on the Nannygai offshore from Sceales Bay. As always we have plenty of fishing news to fill you in on, including some Cuttlefish data out of Spencer Gulf, more pollution in the Port River, a wrap up of another hugely successful ‘Onka Stompa’ and a bit of a look at a few great ideas going on interstate that we would love to see in SA one day.

This week we come to you from the deck at Streaky Bay to discuss our stay on the Eyre Peninsula so far. Shark cage diving, exploring the Port Lincoln National Park, whiting fishing at Streaky Bay, Great seafood and exploring the local regions have made for a great trip so far. 

We are joined by Andrew Wright, who is the General Manager of Calypso Star Charters who took us out to the North Neptune Island, where we were lucky enough to dive with a number of Great White Sharks. Andrew tells us about the business, the region, and the growth in shark cage diving over the years, as well as talking about his own fishing and boating experiences.

As always, we also talk about the big news items in SA fishing, including the opening up of Snapper fishing in the South East, Seal drama in the Coorong and tell you where the fish are biting. Episode 42: SA Boat and Fishing Show Preview with Tracey Tito and Simon Green

This week we have 2 massive guests join us to preview the upcoming SA Boat and Fishing Show, which is held from October 22 to 24 at the Adelaide Showgrounds. 

Tracey Tito has been kind enough to join the podcast for the second time, this time to discuss her role in coordinating the fishing stage and fishing exhibitions at the Boat Show. Tracey and the ‘Team Just a Girl’ will be hosting the Fishing stage and have 2 presentations of their own: A shark cooking demonstration and a question and answer session at the end of the day. Tracey is super passionate about making the boat show bigger and better than ever and gives us a great run down of what all you keen anglers can expect. 

Simon Green is another keen SA Fisho, who has recently taken over running Savage Tackle from David Cranefield who is a previous guest of the show as well. Simon is also a big part of the Boat and Fishing Show, having an exhibition set up showcasing his tackle including burley pots, sinkers, downrigger bombs, release weights and even some ‘Show Specials’ which he discusses in the interview. He is also getting on stage for a presentation about how to effectively use a release weight to safely release a Snapper, an important skill for all SA fisherman to know! Simon also talks about taking over the business, what’s new and upcoming and answers our 5 regular fishing questions!

Episode 41 - Reef Encounters Fishing Charter

This week we are joined by Ryan and Nadine, who have just taken over Reef Encounters Fishing Charters, from the bottom end of Yorke Peninsula. We chat about their fishing experiences, journey to owning the business, how COVID and the snapper ban are effecting charter fishing and what they plan to do new or differently going forward! This is one of SA's great charters and we are sure these two will do a great job to keep the standard as high as ever!

As always we bring you all the big news in SA fishing, including the upcoming Boat show, the MRFAC vote, West Beach Boat Ramp closures and the unfortunate closure of Absolute Charters which was another of the states best fishing charter experiences.  We also discuss our recent rescue of a group of kayakers from the Coorong and discuss some important learnings that all SA Fishos can take from this!

Episode 40: Caleb Murray

This week we are joined by Caleb Murray, the man behind ‘Fishing in the Dark’ on Youtube and Facebook. Caleb lost his vision in a car crash and shares with us his inspiring story about how he has overcome his obstacles to continue his love for fishing. We hear about all the challenges involved with fishing without any sight and some of the ways Caleb has adapted to overcome them. He can still claim to tie a better rig than Dizzy and has enough prized catches to put most anglers to shame.

We also have lots of fishing news to share with you including plenty of seaweed chat, plenty of news out of PIRSA, a St Kilda Mangroves update and what is happening with the rotting whale carcass. Another not to be missed episode for all South Australian Anglers.

Episode 39: Bodhi Pannenberg

Bodhi is a gun fisherman from the Port MacDonnell in the South East of SA and joins us to chat all things massive Tuna. This season, Bodhi has really turned it on and is in the middle of a hot run of catching big barrel sized Tuna. He has amassed a serious following on Instagram and regularly makes us jealous of his fishing prowess! He is very generous with his time and knowledge and is more than happy to share a few tips to point us and any other wannabe barrel fisherman in the right direction. Episode 38: David Basham

This weeks podcast is an absolute must listen to for all South Australian Fishos. We are joined by Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development: David Basham, to discuss all things SA Fishing.

Episode 37: Josh Davey

This week we are joined by another guest who is passionate about improving fishing in SA. Josh Davey is a Rec Fish SA Director and has recently finished his Honours degree in Marine Biology and Aquaculture with the Southern Shark Ecology Group at Flinders University looking at the movements of 30 Southern Eagle Rays in Coffin Bay. We chat with Josh about all things fishing including his recent project, his involvement in the Bream Master Series and the recent letter to SA politicians pushing for fishing to be considered a sport. 

As always we also discuss all the big news in SA Fishing including the MRFAC Recreational Fishing Strategy, the reasons behind wanting to have fishing recognised as a sport, some recent Fishing Charter Grants and a the new Rec Fish Citizen Science Memberships!

Episode 36: Fraser Ellis 

This week we are joined by Member for Narungga Fraser Ellis. Born and bred in Kadina, Frase is a huge advocate for his local region and is proud to represent the Yorke Peninsula and Adelaide Plains in South Australian Politics. While he may not be the most experienced angler, he is a self proclaimed ‘Sweep Fishing Expert’ and most of all he knows all of what goes on around YP. We chat with Frase about the effect of the Snapper ban on his local constituents, his thoughts on a rec fishing license, find out about work on local boat ramps and hear what else is happening in terms of fishing on Yorkes.

Episode 34: Will McLeay 

This week we are joined by Will McLeay, who is the President of the Adelaide Game Fishing Club (AGFC). Will grew up fishing for bread and butter species on Kangaroo Island, but in his adult years has found his real passion for catching monster Yellowtail Kingfish. Will is heavily involved in a petition, aiming to stop the commercial netting of Kingfish in SA. If this petition is signed by 10,000 South Australians, a parliamentary review of this practice will take place, which will be a great result for recreational fishing in SA. We chat with Will about this survey, the AGFC and try and get some tips for our pursuit of big SA Kingys!

This week we have some big news, we have been lucky enough to write an article for SA Angler Magazine. Our write up of our annual KI trip is featuring in the May/June edition of SA's number one fishing magazine, so make sure you get your hands on a copy for a look!

To celebrate our writing debut, we have fellow columnist Archie Coote on the show as this weeks guest. At 14 years of age, Archie has an impressive fishing resume already! He writes for SA Angler and was on the front cover of the most recent edition, he has a hugely popular Instagram page; 'Archies Angling' and has even appeared on I-Fish. Based in Port Lincoln and working at the local tackle shop,  Archie knows everything there is to know about fishing the Eyre Peninsula. He has had some great success lately including  heaps of good size land based flathead and plenty of Kingfish off the local Jetties.

As well as chatting with Archie, we talk all things fishing in SA, including the most recent news and fishing reports, and we catch up on dizzy's Fishing Trip/Honey Moon to Kangaroo Island!

Episode 31: Jeremy Arrascaeta from Angler Restaurant at Stirling

This week we are joined by a ripping guest to chat all things seafood and sustainable fishing. Jeremy Arrascaeta from the hugely popular restaurant Angler, at Stirling. Angler is all about serving high quality, sustainable seafood and their menu features items such as carp bacon, scallop pies and dry aged fish. Jeremy is one of the chefs at the up market fish and chip shop and comes with three Michelen Star experience. He talks all about his love of seafood, how to buy sustainable fish in South Australia and also givens an opinion on controversial topics such as the Seaspiracy Documentary and professional fishing for Yellow Tail Kingfish in SA.

He is certainly a great representative of junior anglers across the Fleurieu Peninsula having caught all of the main target species in the area including some big Tuna! His Instagram page: Jai's Adventure showcases all his trophy fish and makes plenty of older fisherman very jealous!

We are also joined by Wade Atkinson, the man behind the highly regarded Rez Baits. Wade's great range, immaculate workmanship and high level of quality control produce a great soft plastic that has caught many great fish all across the state! We chat about Wade's own fishing journey, discuss how they are made and hear a teaser of what is next out of the Rez Baits brand!

Plus we chat about where the fish are biting and discuss all of the big news in SA Fishing, including the newly released Draft Strategic Plan for recreational fishing in South Australia. 

Episode 28 – Alex Williams

This week we are joined by Alex Williams to discuss all things freshwater fishing in South Australia. Alex is a Rec Fish SA Director, he is the Chairperson and Coordinator of the Warren Reservoir Recreational Fishing Committee, is a member and former President of OzFish Barossa Chapter and is also heavily involved in the Bream Master SA Competitions. 

Alex is obviously super passionate about freshwater fishing and despite being so heavily involved in all of these rec fishing organisations, he still finds time to head over to KI and catch plenty of big Bream from his Hobie Kayak. 

We also catch up on all the latest news; including the closure of the South East Snapper season, the next ‘Reeling in Junior Anglers’ clinic and preview the upcoming SA Carp Frenzy. Plus hear about our trip out to Althorpe Island and hear about a very handy fishing App in our Tackle Segment. 

Episode 27 - Ralph Czabayski: President of the Game Fishing Club of South Australia

We are joined by Ralph ahead of this weekends John Johnson Memorial Wirrina Tuna Slam, after the event had to be postponed from last weekend! Ralph was able to confirm that the event will go ahead and provide us with a preview of what to expect. We also chatted about all things going on within the club, as well as hearing about his own experience targeting big game fish offshore - including a 1,111 pound Marlin off of Cairns. 

We have been lucky enough to enjoy some excellent fishing recently, spending a day out with Gavin Solly from Kangaroo Island Fishing Adventures, so we also review and discuss our day out!

Episode 26 – Moira Jenkins and Lee Van Soest

This week we have 2 excellent guests:

Moira Jenkins is the Mayor of Victor Harbour and is fresh off fishing with Team Just A Girl in the Coast 2 Coast Tuna Competition. Lee talks to us about the competition itself as well as talking fishing in Victor Harbour more generally, including discussing the future plans for the boat ramp and accompanying public toilets. 

We are also joined by friend of the show Lee Van Soest. It is great to hear how passionate Lee is about getting kids into fishing through the upcoming Reeling in Junior Anglers event that she is running. We also discuss what is happening at MRFAC, including the results of the recreational fishing license survey and the upcoming MRFAC elections.

Episode 25 - Michael Pengilly: Mayor of Kangaroo Island

This weeks episode was recorded on the deck of out KI accomodation at Stokes Bay so of course we spend plenty of time chatting KI and the fishing we have got up to over the past 9 days. 

We also chat with Michael Pengilly, who has spent his entire life living on Kangaroo Island and is currently in his second stint as Mayor, with a period in state politics in between. We chat all things KI including last summers tragic bushfires and how the Island is bouncing back, the effect of COVID on KI and also hear about Michaels own fishing prowess and favourite spots on the Island.

Episode 24 - Steve Lewis

Steve Lewis is the man behind the SFT Australia brand, most famous in South Australia for their hugely popular Takumi Lures. These lures have super successful on the local Southern Bluefin Tuna populations and have quickly become a go to hard body lure for many anglers across the state! Steve tells us all about his own fishing prowess, his history in the fishing tackle industry and also explains why the SFT Takumi is such a hot Tuna lure.

We also discuss our own recent Tuna fishing over the last few weekends out of Marion Bay and Victor Harbor and preview our upcoming annual trip to Kangaroo Island.

Episode 23 - Steve Powell

In the first episode of 2021, we are joined by Steve Powell, who is the man behind the annual Coast 2 Coast Tuna Competition at Victor Harbour. This years competition is fast approaching so it is great to hear from the man in charge about what to expect in this years event, to be held on Febuary 6 and 7. Steve is not only a very good fisherman himself, he is super passionate about recreational tuna fishing and has grown Coast 2 Coast into a hugely successful event on the South Australian Fishing Calendar.

Episode 22: Tracey Tito

 Tracey Tito is the skipper of Team Just A Girl, an all-female fishing team, set up with the goal of creating a fishing network so all woman can enjoy, communicate, and experience the awesome fishing in Australia.

Tracey is a super enthusiastic angler and has been the driving force behind this concept since it was first launched in 2016. Since then, they have had lots of success, fishing in plenty of competitions, creating some great YouTube content and have just made their TV Debut this year on their own series ‘Get Hooked with Team Just A Girl’ on channels 44 and 31.

We are also joined by friend of the show James Flack from Troll So Hard Lures to talk about some of his new gear in preparation for the Summer Tuna Season which is upon us! Plus hear about the boy’s brand new boat, all the fishing news and where the fish are biting leading into Christmas!

Episode 21 – Lubin Pfeiffer

Lubin is a gun fisherman with experience fishing for all sorts of species, using a variety of different techniques. He has spent the best part of the last 2 years on the road in his Van fishing and filming for his Youtube fishing show: The Full Scale Fishing Adventures and is also a regular contributor to SA Angler Magazine. 

While many people know him best for his Murray Cod Fishing, Lubin showed his versatility when he took out the gold medal in the Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships in New Zealand. (His wife also took out the Women’s category!) 

We chat with Lubin about all things Fishing in both SA and around the country, in what is a not to miss episode if you want to hear from one of SA’s best recreational anglers!

Episode 20: Jamie Crawford

Jamie works in aquaculture, is a regular contributor to the hugely popular SA Angler Magazine and has just been announced as one of the recreational fishing representatives on PIRSA’s Seafood Advisory Forum. He is highly regarded and respected in the SA fishing community and it is great to hear about the wide variety of fishing he is in to, as well as his opinions on some of the big issues facing the industry.

This week we have two great guests, both very significant figures in the South Australian Fishing scene: 

David Basham is the Member for Finniss, he recently took over as Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development, which includes responsibility for fishing in the state. We chat with David about all of the big, current issues including commercial netting for Kingfish, the new MRFAC, the possibility of a recreational fishing license and how the total catch of species is monitored. 

Our second guest is Mark Mills, who is the man behind the always popular Onka Stompa Fishing Competition that is being held on November 8. Millsy is up to his 15th year running the event, which has raised huge money for the Childhood Cancer Association!

Anita Nedosyko
Marine Restoration Coordinator, The Nature Conservancy

Anita is not only a keen recreational fisho, she is also heavily involved in re-creating marine habitat in this state. She is the project director for the recently completed Windarra Reef off Rogues Point on Yorke Peninsula and also for the upcoming reef construction off of Glenelg. 

Anita talks to us about the logistical challenges of building these reefs, what they are learning and how this will impact on recreational fishing going forward.
