The Long Game of Love - with Branden

Living Hope

Resurrection life invites us into a different way of seeing. Through the living hope of 1 Peter and the challenge of Matthew 25, we are reminded that the kingdom of God is not something distant we wait for, but an inheritance we are called to live from today.

Jesus meets us in the hungry, the thirsty, the lonely, and the overlooked. The places the world avoids are often the very places where the treasures of the kingdom are hidden. As we learn to listen well, love generously, and hold every person as sacred, resurrection life begins to overflow through ordinary acts of grace.

We are invited into the Kingdom to inherit it and to reveal it.

The Shepherd and the Valley

Psalm 23 reminds us that resurrection life begins with knowing the Shepherd. He is the One who leads, restores, guides, protects, prepares, anoints, and shelters. Even when we walk through valleys, we are not abandoned. We are accompanied.

Too often we live from a place of lack, fear, striving, or uncertainty. But the invitation of resurrection life is to rest in the truth that He is with us. As we learn to trust His gentle leading, we discover that we lack nothing, we are not alone, and His goodness and kindness continue to pursue us.

A Heart of Flesh

As we continue our journey through the Resurrection Life series, we are invited to examine the condition of our hearts. We see that resurrection is not only about what Jesus has done for us, but about what He longs to awaken within us now.

A soft heart remains open to compassion, mercy, forgiveness, and love. A hardened heart can restrict the flow of resurrection life. As we stay close to Jesus, He gently removes what has become calloused and restores us to wholehearted love for God and for one another.

When we choose grace over judgment, compassion over self-protection, and connection over isolation, resurrection life begins to flow freely through us once again.

Called to Rise

We’ve been tracing resurrection, not just what Jesus did, but what His rising means for us now.

Through Lazarus, the virgins, and the wedding feast, we’re being reminded that we’ve all been given a lamp, but the oil comes through intimacy. And it’s easy to drift. Distraction, distance, and even good things can quietly pull us away from the table that’s been set for us.

The invitation is still open.

Like Jonah, we can run, resist, or make excuses. But even there, God is still drawing us back, not to pressure us, but to bring us into life again.

So we return. We make space. We come close.

Because it’s in His presence that the oil is restored, and from that place, we are called to rise.

Awakening to Life - Let the dryness drive your roots deeper

Last year, we learned that in quietness and rest, strength arises. That hasn’t changed. But something is happening in that quiet place. He is leading us, gently but firmly, into something new, an awakening to life, to Arise and Shine.

We are learning to stay close to Jesus, yoked to Him. And yet many of us are feeling a heaviness, a sense of despondency, a loss of hope, a dryness. That’s real, and it matters, but we don’t stop there.

We remember the cross, but often forget the resurrection.

Jesus didn’t only die, He rose. And His rising is meant to awaken something in us now. God is still bringing things back to life.

So we let hunger grow. We let thirst deepen. Because if we’re not hungry, we won’t eat. If we’re not thirsty, we won’t drink. Let the dryness drive your roots deeper.

It’s Sunday, but Friday is Coming - Christina Stewart

There are seasons where we experience moments of joy, breakthrough, and answered prayer, but then life shifts. Things don’t unfold the way we expected. Disappointment comes. Shaking comes. And in those moments, it’s easy to lose sight of Jesus, just like the disciples did.

They saw the miracles. They walked with Him. They believed… until everything changed.

The invitation for us is not to avoid those moments, but to recognize Him in them.

When fear rises, when confusion sets in, when prayers seem unanswered, Jesus still speaks the same words: “Take courage. It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

Courage is not something we either have or don’t have. It’s something we choose.

And that choice is built through a history of trusting Him, remembering His faithfulness, and holding onto who He is, even when we don’t understand what He’s doing.

Our faith will be tested. Not to break us, but to reveal what we truly believe.

Without Fear. All Our Days

In Luke 1:67, He declares that redemption has already been accomplished… before Jesus has even gone to the cross. Past tense. Already done.

If that’s true, then why are we still living as though we’re not free?

We’ve learned how to relate to Him through fear, but He never asked for that. He’s inviting us into a relationship without fear, where holiness and righteousness aren’t something we strive for, but something we’ve already been given.

So why do we still hesitate? Why do we hold back, hide, or shrink?

Because fear still shapes how we live, how we pray, and how we show up.

But there’s another reality: there is no tear left in the fabric of who you are.
What He’s done has already made you whole.

So the invitation is simple, but not easy: shake off the fear, step forward, and live from what’s already been finished.

Come to the Alter of Incense

I was struck by the reality that God remembers the prayers we’ve forgotten. Even the ones we stopped praying long ago, He still hears, He still holds, and He still responds.

Prayer isn’t meant to be something intimidating or distant. It’s an invitation to come close, to be joined with Him again, morning and evening. To seek, to listen, to receive instruction, and then to return at the end of the day in conversation and fellowship.

This is the pattern we were created for, from the garden to the tabernacle to now. Not striving, not performing, but living from relationship. When we come to Him like this, our hearts are realigned, our burdens are lifted, and we begin to live from the place of being held, not holding everything together ourselves.

“Come to me in the morning, and come to me in the evening.”

An invitation into Powerlessness - Strength Through Weakness

Jesus invites us into a way of life that looks nothing like the world’s understanding of power. Again and again in the gospel, life is not found through control, competence, or winning, but through weakness, dependence, and trust.

Scripture points to a kingdom where God’s presence is revealed most clearly in places of powerlessness. Jesus does not conquer as a lion in the way we expect, but as a Lamb who lays His power down in love. It is through this surrender that true authority and life are released.

This invitation is not about being retraumatized or stripped unwillingly, but about choosing to lay power down from a place of secure belonging. God meets us in these places, and through them, His life flows to us and to those around us.

I felt the Lord draw my attention to one simple but confronting truth, where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. As we approach a new year, the question isn’t what we plan to improve, but what we are actually investing ourselves in day by day.

What we watch for, reach for first, and give our attention to in the mundane reveals what is shaping us. When presence becomes secondary, our hearts quietly drift, even if our intentions are good.

This is an invitation to take an honest inventory of our firsts, lay them down before Jesus, and allow Him to reorder what matters, because His presence is the true treasure and the only thing that can carry us into what’s ahead.

Resilient Joy

Today we sat with joy, not as happiness, but as something deeper, resilient, and anchored in presence. Joy isn’t the absence of struggle, it’s what emerges when we recognize we are not alone in it. When fear and anxiety try to lead in moments of uncertainty, joy comes from yielding again to Jesus as our Shepherd.

True joy grows when we allow God to lead us through what we cannot see, trusting His presence in the rocking and the unknown. It is formed through watching, preparing, and choosing to rejoice even when the path feels unstable. In His presence there is fullness of joy, a joy that steadies us, restores us, and reshapes how we live, love, and move through the world.

Preparing The Way

Without Him, Nothing

Lack is a cruel taskmaster. It drives anxiety, fuels striving, and keeps us chasing scraps instead of coming to the source of life. When we believe something is missing, we start running to anything that promises relief, distraction, or control, but it never satisfies, it only deepens the hunger.

Scripture keeps pointing us back to the same truth, Jesus. When He is the one shepherding us, we lack nothing. Rest replaces striving, peace steadies the soul, and fear loses its grip. The question isn’t just what you’re lacking, but who you’re allowing to lead you. Without Him, everything we chase becomes empty. With Him, we find ourselves sustained, satisfied, and held.

BEHOLD!

This week I’m still camping in John chapter one, and the word that stopped me this time was behold. Beholding is not passive. It is choosing to stop, to turn my attention, and to yield my time and my inner posture to God. In Scripture, behold always comes with provision, something God gives that we cannot produce through our own effort.
I unpack how beholding begins in humility, open hands, and waiting, and how that waiting becomes transformation. When we make space for the Holy Spirit, He straightens what is bent, brings rest where there has been striving, and produces fruit that effort never could. Beholding is how grace meets us, how freedom breaks in, and how we learn to stand upright, rooted in who God says we are.

This fall, I keep hearing the same invitation from Jesus, come to me. In John 1, He turns to the first disciples and asks, what do you seek, and that question has been working on my heart. In this message, I share some of my own “false comforts” and distractions, the places I run to when I am tired or overwhelmed, and how they never actually give what my heart is really looking for.

We walk through the calling stories in John 1, the repeated theme of being found, and the way Jesus sees Nathaniel under the fig tree before Nathaniel ever sees Him. Brandon shares the story of losing, and then finding, his brother Colin at the fair, as a living picture of the Father’s determined love. What does it mean to be truly seen, truly found, and to respond again to Jesus’ simple invitation, come and see?

In Brazil, Hope Ministries continues to serve women on the streets, their families, and now children at risk. Through relationship, discipleship, and patience, we are seeing lives healed, families restored, and new communities of faith take root. Every small step is part of God’s bigger story of redemption.

Beyond Words: Grace and Sovereignty

Grace and sovereignty meet in the tension of the kingdom already here and not yet. David fasted for his child, then worshiped when the child died. Jesus prayed in Gethsemane, “not my will, but yours be done.” We too live in this place—praying for the sick, serving the poor, trusting God even when outcomes don’t make sense.

His mercy flows freely, and our call is to receive it, share it, and follow where He leads. When we stumble, grace restores us and reminds us He knows what He’s doing.

Out of the Shadows – Keys to the Kingdom

In this message, Tabitha Fellman leads us deeper into Matthew 16, exploring what it means to carry the keys of the Kingdom. These aren't just metaphors—they represent access, authority, and identity rooted in Christ. We are invited into the sacred space of stillness where spiritual revelation is received, not earned.

In our current Sermon Series Out of the Shadows, we are stepping out of old mindsets, false identities, and worldly lenses—and into the light of who we truly are in Christ.

This week, Tabitha unpacks Jesus’ question to His disciples: “Who do you say I am?” When Peter declares, “You are the Christ,” it becomes a powerful teaching moment about identity, humility, and the authority given to those who walk in dependence on God.

Beware the Leaven, Embrace the Stillness ~ Tabitha Fellman

This week continues our journey through Mark 8, revealing the subtle but powerful influences of the world—the “leaven” of the Pharisees and Herod—that shape not only our thinking, but the postures of our hearts.

We are challenged to examine where anxiety, impatience, and self-focus have crept in, replacing Kingdom stillness with striving. We are reminded that true transformation doesn’t come by managing behavior—it comes by surrendering to love, receiving sight that goes deeper than what the natural eye can see.

As we slow down to recognize the inner noise, the spin cycle of “I, I, I,” and the temptation to demand signs before we believe, we are called to return again to quiet trust, compassion, and the regenerative love of Christ.

Because when we move out of fear and striving—and into stillness and trust—we are finally able to see others, and ourselves, through the eyes of the Kingdom.

But there’s good news: compassion is the antidote.

As we step into 2025, the call is clear: quietness and rest. But let’s be real—this isn’t about passivity or doing nothing. It’s about releasing the striving, the grasping, and the need to control. It’s about stepping into His presence, where true strength is found.

Unpacking the single most important thought we will ever have: how we think about God. If we see Him as an angry tyrant, we’ll live in fear. But if we recognize that His justice is birthed in mercy and compassion, we can fully receive His love. Why? Because faith only grows in love, and love is the essence of God’s character.

Posture for 2025: A People of His Presence Quietness and rest do not mean disengagement—they mean stepping away from striving and into trust. This is not a year of trying harder; this is a year of abiding. Like Moses in Exodus 33, we cry out, “Lord, if your presence does not go with us, do not lead us from here.”

Quietness + Rest = Strength This is the truth we need to anchor into this year. Not busyness. Not performance. Not the world’s expectations. But abiding in Him. Isaiah 32 promises that when we allow righteousness to take root in our hearts, the result will be peace. And from that peace flows a quiet confidence—one that cannot be shaken.

Are You Willing? Becoming a people of presence requires waiting. Stillness. A willingness to let go of idols—even the ones we don’t want to admit we hold on to. Are we willing to choose differently? To let our schedules reflect a hunger for God’s presence? To stretch the muscle of waiting on Him?

As we continue into the new year, Tabitha builds upon last week’s message, inviting us into intentional surrender—a posture of yielding to Emmanuel, God with us.

Drawing from Isaiah 30-32, she reminds us of the heart of God—one full of grace and compassion. We are called to examine the lenses through which we view the world, staying vigilant against false masters that drain us rather than restore us. The Lord restores; He doesn’t deplete. True transformation isn’t achieved through striving, but through resting in His presence.

As we step into 2025, we stand at the threshold of a new season—a season of light. Advent has drawn to a close, but the light of Christ continues to shine, and we are invited to carry that light with us into every moment of the year ahead. In this message, we reflect on what it means to walk in the light, to see clearly in the midst of uncertainty, and to step forward in faith rather than fear.

Drawing from Psalm 27, we explore how fear and darkness can cloud our vision, how our circumstances try to pull us into despair, and how God calls us instead to lift our heads and trust in His goodness. Seeking His presence daily, turning our attention toward hope rather than hopelessness, and choosing to abide in His truth rather than be consumed by the chaos around us.

As we embrace the word for this new year—Fresh Fire—we recognize that fire refines, purifies, and makes the ground fertile for new growth. To walk in the light, we must surrender to His refining work, practice His presence, and intentionally abide in His truth.

So as we enter 2025, the challenge is this: Will we tune into the abiding presence of God daily? Will we declare His truth over our lives and stand in His promises? Or will we remain stuck in the cycle of fear and uncertainty?

It’s time to turn on the lights.

INVITED IN: Open Hearts, Open Doors

Hey friends,

Last Sunday, we spoke about the power of community & belonging. I got up here thinking my message was just “meh.” You know, one of those times where you feel like you just muddled through. But then the texts started coming in, and I’m asked to lean into it more, to explore this place that God seems to be highlighting. And let me tell you, that sent me into a bit of a spiral. It felt like I was walking into a test I wasn’t prepared for. Ever feel like that? Like you’re about to fail before you even start?

But here’s the thing: God doesn’t ask us to have it all together. He doesn’t need us to have all the answers. What He’s after is our hearts—open, willing, and present.

This week, I’ve been sitting with the idea of intentional relationship. God’s been showing me that it’s not about doing ministry out of duty or transaction. It’s about being fully present—with Him and with each other. It’s about creating spaces where people can belong, where they feel seen, known, and loved.

Here’s what that looks like:

Making Space for the “Untouchables”: Jesus always made room for the ones on the margins—the blind, the lame, the women, the children, the Gentiles. He welcomed them into spaces they were told they didn’t belong. Who are those people for us today? Are we making space for them?
Living Beyond Transaction: Feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, sitting with the grieving—these are the costly, relational acts that Jesus calls us to. It’s not about fixing people; it’s about being present with them.
Opening Our Doors: Whether it’s a single mom with a high-needs child or a homeless friend at Urban Hope, God is asking us to step out of our comfort zones and open the doors of our hearts, our homes, and even our wallets. It’s scary, yes—but it’s also where the kingdom breaks in.

God reminded me of something so simple yet profound: He sees us. He’s with us. Even when we feel like we don’t have the words or the strength, He shows up.

So here’s the invitation: Let’s be a people who show up. Let’s be a community with open doors and open hearts, ready to embrace whoever God sends our way.—we’re being called to shift, to think differently, and to step into a deeper sense of belonging. And I believe we’ll see heaven break in.

Journey into Holiness ~ Tabitha Fellman

The Presence of the Lord - Journey Into Holiness

In this week's message, we summarized our journey into how humanity's relationship with God unraveled due to sin, starting with Adam and Eve’s disobedience. Their fall introduced a transactional relationship with God, where they were separated from His presence and the foundation of sin was laid. From the lives of Cain and Abel, to the story of Jacob and Esau. Symbolically, these stories point us to Jesus, who took on the curse for us, becoming the bridge that brings us back into communion with God, clothing us in His righteousness.

This set the stage for our journey into Leviticus, a book often viewed as difficult but rich in prophetic meaning. We look at the sacrificial system, that it's not just a set of rituals but a direct pointer to Jesus. Every offering, whether the burnt, grain, peace, sin, or guilt offering, foreshadows the ultimate sacrifice of Christ, who gave Himself fully for our redemption. Through these offerings, we see God’s holiness revealed, His love for us in spite of sin, and His desire to bring us into right relationship with Him.

Holiness, as we learn to lean in and "be", is the foundation from which God’s love, grace, and mercy flow. It shapes our character, transforms us into the likeness of Christ, and empowers us to bring the kingdom of heaven into the world around us.

Today, we explored the transformative power of Thanksgiving in our lives as believers. More than just a response to blessings, Thanksgiving is a spiritual tool that opens the door to God's presence, bringing peace, joy, and renewal to our souls.

Reflecting on Psalm 42, we considered how, like a deer thirsts for water, our souls long for God. Thanksgiving draws us deeper into His presence, shifts our focus from the troubles around us, and magnifies His greatness. In moments of struggle, when it feels like darkness surrounds us, Thanksgiving becomes a powerful weapon—lifting our spirits, restoring hope, and reminding us of God’s faithfulness.
As we confessed our gratitude together, we were reminded that Thanksgiving leads us into prayer, worship, and greater devotion. It fosters peace, strengthens our faith, and brings us into alignment with God’s will. It’s through this gratitude that we experience the joy of the Lord and the power of His presence.
Let's reflect on what we are thankful for & continue to make Thanksgiving and gratitude a daily practice in our walk with God.

This week, we are diving into the concept of "Being a People of Presence," exploring what it means to stay in the presence of God. As a church, we're in a series that will guide us through the end of the year, setting the stage for where God is leading us in the future—focusing on belonging, believing, and becoming. The heart of this message challenges us to evaluate what draws us closer to God and what pulls us away.

Through the stories of Adam, Eve, Cain, Abel, Esau, and Jacob, we see how fear, jealousy, and misunderstanding of God's timing can lead us away from His presence. Today's message emphasizes the importance of guarding our eyes, ears, and desires as they influence our walk with God. We are called to focus on Christ, who, like Jacob, clothes us in His righteousness so we can receive God's blessings fully.

As we journey together, this is a call to repentance and alignment with God's will. The more we focus on Him, the more our desires are transformed, and we become who we are meant to be in Christ. This is an invitation for us to reflect on how we live, speak, and move—so that through our transformed lives, we influence the world around us for the Kingdom of God.

Let us be encouraged to press into God's Word and His Spirit, knowing He is ready to lead us into greater blessings.

Always Remember…You Are God’s Beloved
My final Sunday as your pastor has now arrived. If there was one word or emotion that is predominant among the myriad of other emotions that I’m feeling, it would be gratitude. First and foremost, April and I are so thankful to have been blessed with an amazing faith community. You have loved us and cared for us extremely well. You also love God with a very deep love and model that love to all others.

I am also most grateful to God for the immense love, compassion, and favour God has poured out on April and me. I can honestly say that God has been my constant companion, my Emmanuel (God-with-us), during all the highs and the lows. God is forever faithful! With Tab now stepping in to shepherd you, I urge you to go boldly into the future knowing that whatever comes your way, you are deeply loved by God. You are God’s beloved.

Part 3 - AS YOU CONTINUE ON IN YOUR JOURNEY…EMBRACE LOVE

How you begin will determine how you will finish. That axiom can be applied to many things in life, from laying flooring, to shingling, or attaching siding to a house. If I don’t install those first few pieces bang on, it will affect the rest of the project. The same is true in my faith journey. When I get the first piece right, the rest will fall into place.

Why did Jesus come into our world? Because God loves the world, that’s why. When asked what’s the greatest commandment, Jesus lays the first piece: “ ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22: 37-40) This is our only starting point, and it's from here where we will experience life to the full!

So much so that when you read the New Testament, it is clear that the death and resurrection of Jesus offers a completely new and transformed life the second we choose to make Jesus our Lord. But what about those days when we don’t feel like any transformation has occurred at all? Well, there is a battle that is occurring, not on the outside, but deep within our minds. Peter calls us to, Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. (1 Peter 5:8). The greatest battle is the battle within our minds, and that’s where the transformed life begins!

The season of Lent is a time to search our hearts as we seek to follow Jesus. We do this through soul searching, acts of self-sacrifice, and abstinence. In reality, we are walking with Jesus in his final weeks leading up to his crucifixion. How did he, as Luke states, “…resolutely set out for Jerusalem.”, knowing what he was facing? Jesus, and many from the early church to today have faced similar fates. How did they do it? Interestingly, Scripture tells us plainly how they walked towards suffering. Join us as we consider how Jesus walked the road that we must walk toward resurrection.

Luke states, “As the time drew near for him to ascend to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.” (Luke 9:51) Knowing what he was going to face, Jesus journeyed to Jerusalem with intention! Consider this: The natural human tendency is to avoid pain and suffering at any cost. But rather than avoid it, Jesus walked towards it! Remember, Jesus was fully human just like you and I are. He knew pain. But as we walk closely with Jesus, he will help us to see what he saw and sees.

ABSORBED INTO CHRIST (a 5-part series)
At a wedding, couples will sometimes have 3 candles displayed with the two outside candles lit. After saying their vows, they will then each take one of the lit candles and bring them together to light the middle one. They will then extinguish their own candles, with the middle one remaining lit to signify that they have now become one.

That act is quite similar to the calling Jesus extends to all people. He says things like if we lay down our life, we will find life. In his final prayer, he said, “I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.” (John 17:21) Baptism speaks of something similar…this idea of the call to be ‘absorbed’ into Jesus’ life. Christ’s life in us. Our lives in Christ.

ABSORBED INTO CHRIST: Part 2 - My Identity is Found in YOU!

One of the first things that occurs when a baby is born and a quick medical check has been done, is the mother gently holding that baby close to her, skin-to-skin. It’s called bonding. Over the next few years, that bonding, love, and nurturing that that baby receives will have a profound effect on the person it becomes as it matures.

The arc of Scripture paints a picture of a God who deeply loves humanity and calls us to come…to belong. It’s in that relationship where I am free to become all that I was meant to be!

Part 1 - The Calling
What is the call of Christ on your life? Before you answer that question, keep in mind that any calling is a calling from something, to something else. Calling is not a registration, nor a subscription or membership. Calling is always from something to something. Jesus Christ calls us not just to follow, but to let go of this life (like, for real!), and be absorbed into his life.

As we enter into a new year, it’s natural for people to wonder if the world is going to improve at all. You can sense that people want to hope, but fear and despair seem to be pushing back. And no doubt, some of the questions lingering deep within people are probably: “What’s life all about? What’s the meaning of it?” And Jesus stands at the crossroads of these questions and calls us to follow him – the One who is the meaning to all of life.

For us who are his followers, we have great news for our neighbours, and that great news is none other than Jesus. It’s why in a couple of weeks from now, we are launching Alpha. We want to introduce others to this one person who brings meaning to all of life.

Christmas is a time of paradox. A time where there is great joy, and sometimes great pain. It can feel uncomfortable for us to hold these opposites in tension, and most times we want to avoid the tension and plant ourselves on one side or the other. Jesus' life was full of tension and paradox. He modeled for us what it looks like to have one foot in both camps and still be able to live out our lives with purpose.

In our day, this simple prayer, "Come, Holy Spirit!" has become the heart's cry of the Vineyard movement since its first utterance over forty-four years ago. Through it, we highlight our dependence and expectancy on the person and presence of the Holy Spirit to continue to reveal the Good News of the Kingdom of God that has come, is at hand, and is still coming. Through our intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit, this Vineyard distinctive manifests in our being, believing and our doing.

"If you love me, keep my commandments. I will ask the Father to give you another Helper, to be with you always. He is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor recognizes Him. But you recognize Him, because He lives with you and will be in you." - John 14:15-17

Have you ever wondered why you think the way you think and do the things you do? Well, there are multiple factors that have played into who we become as people.

It’s the same for who the Vineyard is as a movement throughout the world. There really is a reason for why we think the way we think, and the things we do. Over the next few weeks, we are going to look at our core distinctives and reflect on the call that God has placed on the Vineyard movement.

Hungry for More
Down through history, many movements began with a stirring in the hearts of people that could best be described as a longing or yearning for ‘something’. It was the same for the beginning of the Vineyard movement. Throughout many denominations there were people with a hunger, which can best be described as a ‘hunger for more’. That ‘more’ is found in Jesus' words to his followers: “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5 NLT

Doin' the Stuff for One Another
Regardless of what field one studies, the goal at the end is more often than not, the same. A student enters the classroom and is taught the history of that particular field, the theory and the principles. All of that is preparation for what's called the practicum, practically doing what you've learned in the classroom. When Jesus went about training his disciples, he taught them from the Scriptures in simple language, followed up with a demonstration, and then told them to go and do the same.

This week is part 2 of our practicum. Jesus says to us, Give as freely as you have received. Of all the gifts of the Kingdom, the most amazing is the gift of forgiveness. God gave it, we received it. As his followers, we get to do the same, both in giving and leading others in the way of forgiveness.

Step 5 of the Healing Prayer Model
One of the most important distinctive of the Vineyard movement is captured in a simple, four-word phrase: “Everyone gets to play.” Coined by our founder John Wimber, and based on his understanding of the New Testament call to equip all the saints for the work of ministry (Eph. 4:12), this phrase set the stage for the unique Vineyard approach to compassionately praying for others.

This week we will examine the fifth step: Post Prayer Direction. We will quickly review the entire model then spend some time discussing what to do when we are done praying. Followed by a practice demonstration and time to practice what we have learned.

Special events, banquets, and ceremonies run seamlessly because the servants and workers are doing everything they can to make themselves invisible, to ensure that the guest of honour is honoured. Summer Series
MAY I PRAY FOR YOU? Equipping followers of Jesus to do the stuff
In the gospels, Jesus flatlines our concept of leader-follower roles in society. Much of Jesus' three years of public ministry entailed equipping his followers to do what he did, or as we say in the Vineyard doin the stuff. The Jesus way is leaders serving the body of Christ by equipping them to be ministers of healing, both inside and outside of the church. One of the ways we can minister to others is with prayer. As we submit to the rule and reign of Jesus, the Spirit ministers in ways we would never expect.
This summer our teaching series will include some equipping time for those who would like to practice. This will all be done under the guidance of our prayer ministry team. Lets gather with expectation for the Kingdom to break through!

FRAGILE...Handle with Care!
Jesus came announcing that the Kingdom of God is near! What Jesus taught and the signs and wonders that accompanied his teachings confirmed this announcement. However, Jesus' call to follow him, meant that Jesus would continue his mission through his followers. As Jesus loves all people, so too are we to love all people. As we pray for others and love them as Jesus loves them, the Kingdom comes!

God's Why

God's WHY
If you were asked What does God do? Most followers of Jesus could give an answer. The same would be true if asked, How does God do it? But the question that is not so easy to answer is WHY. Answering the WHY question will always reveal what's in the heart.
In his sermon, Jesus states: Not everyone who calls out to me, Lord! Lord! will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. God's will is God's WHY. Jesus calls each of us to make the Father's WHY, our WHY. So what is God's WHY?

Only One Thing Matters Most to God

It's interesting how we are inclined to make following Jesus a complicated endeavour. We have innumerable doctrines, statements of faith, creeds, and theological perspectives in our quest to follow. Jesus comes along and gets right to the heart of the issue literally. He's not all that interested in our knowledge, the music we sing, or how spiritually gifted we are. Jesus cuts through all of that and goes straight to our heart. If the heart is not one with God's heart, everything else is window dressing.

Following with Eyes Wide Open
God is kind. If you have any doubts, observe how Jesus cares for people and especially for his followers. There are many times in the gospels where Jesus warns people. How we read Jesus' warnings depends a lot on our view of God. If God is punitive, then there will be a tendency to read Jesus' warnings as; You better watch out! But if God is love, then Jesus' warnings are there to help us and guide us along the way. Because pitfalls are inevitable, Jesus calls us to follow with eyes wide open.

For 11 years Phil and Jen Snell along with their two children (now grown people) Luke and Faith, have served as long-term missionaries in João Pessoa (JEH-WOW PESS-OAH) Brazil. For the past seven years, they have been working with women trapped in the sex trade.
Nearly all the women they work with are mothers and their children are often their driving motivation for what they do.
A mother in need will do almost anything to protect and provide for her children.
What starts as a means to a desperate end, becomes a quicksand-like trap they can't see a way out of. This is where Jesus and Hope Ministries come in. Holding hope for those without it, they meet them where they are and love them enough not to leave them that way.

Hope Ministries works towards seeing women able to find new ways to sustain themselves and most of all, introducing them to a relationship with the savior who has the power to transform their lives.
The slow work of the Kingdom.
Gratefully, after many hours and countless conversations and prayers, they are starting to see women successfully leaving that life.

When you became a follower of Jesus did you have lofty expectations of how life was going to be for you once you started following? If you did, those expectations are usually influenced by the culture we live in and also by our innate desire to have the ‘struggles’ of life minimized. However, nowhere does Scripture imply that life will be easier. Jesus tells us that life on earth will be hard, but the Way of Jesus always has the upper hand. We are called to engage the ‘struggle’, because it’s in the struggle that we experience growth.

The resurrection of Jesus is core to the faith of all believers. Our faith in Christ stands or falls based on the veracity of whether or not Jesus actually resurrected. For centuries now believers and non-believers long to find some form of physical evidence that either supports the Christian faith or disqualifies it. But the gospels and the various letters of the apostles are adamant that the resurrection happened. But for the writers of the New Testament letters, it was the desire to know the power that raised Christ. The power is the proof!

Sometimes I think God loves a good wrestle. Throughout all of Scripture, there appears to be this ongoing challenge that God has with people, and people with God. For instance, there are times when I go to God with a need that Im hoping God will fulfill. When the prayer isn't answered the way I want, I stop. But I wonder, in those times, if God is challenging me to see how hungry I am for what I'm seeking. It's like God is looking at me with a daring smile, saying: Cmonlets see what you're made of! The question is, will I accept the challenge?

God Has A Dream; We Have A Mission

We are His sons and daughters choosing to live in intimate fellowship with God. We bear His image and likeness, we are entrusted with His authority. We are meant to gather up every sphere of society and every realm of life so that the redemptive work of Jesus (God gave up Jesus for the exchange of the earth) will become famous!
But He needs you, me, all of us to "go out" and do it. Lay claim to what Jesus has already paid for. Fulfill God's dream of the harvest of souls returning to Him, restoring them and their original image before it is too late.

WHEN JUDGMENT GOES VIRAL

At times we all fall into the trap of judging someone simply because in one way or another, they are different than we are. Other times, we jump to conclusions because of a behaviour that someone has exhibited that doesn’t meet our approval. But judging has its sinister side that impacts entire people groups by diminishing the value of their humanity, and in turn, all of humanity. It’s much like a virus – it infects and it destroys. It’s called racism.

The Good News is that there is an antidote. Reversing the effects of racism begins by listening to the other. It’s in the listening that we begin to see in the face of the other, the image of God.

Scales, Logs, and Masks…Oh My!

Words matter, even more so when Jesus uses them. In his Sermon on the Mount about the perils of judging others, he uses words such as, ‘judge, speck, log, and hypocrite’. With those words, he paints a picture of what’s really occurring when judgment is used against others. And that picture reveals more about the one judging than it does of the one being judged. But the inverse of that picture tells the story of the Good News that Jesus brings, which is our mission…to set the captives free!

Letting Go of Control
In the first half of Matthew 6 Jesus cautions us about the false security of guarding our reputation, in other words, making ourselves look good before others. But what drives that is my need for you to see me in a certain light. The other driver is my need for you to behave or be in a way that’s pleasing to me. It’s called control. When that doesn’t work, I resort to the only thing that’s left. Judgment. And that never goes well. Jesus’ answer? Do not judge. Let’s talk.

Where should we go to find the joy that we are so hungry for? We need look no further than the good news from the angel that was given to the motley crew of shepherds at the midnight hour. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people.” (Lk. 2:10)

Have you given much thought to your five senses lately? Most people generally believe that the primary purpose of our five senses is to help us navigate our world ‘out’ there. That is true, but there’s another aspect of our senses that you may not be aware of. Jesus touches on one of our senses when he states, “Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body.” (Matt. 6:22). Not just to help us navigate the world out there, but to realize that it plays a part in shaping who we are as a person. Hence, the importance of what our eyes are fixed on.

Forgiveness. A gift from God to humanity. A gift from us to all others. A gift we need to give to ourselves? ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’ is considered as the royal law in the New Testament. In that one little statement is the expectation that of course I would love myself since I’m created in God’s image. But for some, when it comes to forgiveness, the thought of forgiving oneself seems somehow, not right. That we are not worthy of forgiveness. Not worthy of love. But God says… “You are my son, my daughter…heart of my heart. I could never stop loving you!”

The question, “What does love look like?” is a common question for us humans. If there’s one thing we search for, it’s love. But what does it look like? In his little letter, John states that God is love. So it stands to reason that perhaps we should look no further than Jesus. Less than an hour away from dying he utters these words to his enemies - “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” (Lk. 23:34). This one act of Jesus is the epitome of love, and it's called forgiveness!

When you meet a person for the first time without knowing the person’s history, you actually have an incomplete picture of that person. When we read about God’s people in the Bible, we are meeting them as if for the first time. And from that first meeting, we make a judgment, either for good or bad. If it’s bad, then it becomes perplexing how and why God would use such a person. What’s missing is the person’s backstory, and the backstory makes all the difference.

One of the aspects of the Bible that makes it truly striking is how all the writers do not ‘airbrush’ any person mentioned in Scripture…including Jesus. We get to see the good, the bad, and the ugly side of people - real people, just like us.
But what the writers do make clear is that there is only one hero, and that is Jesus. In fact, whoever wrote the book of Hebrews ascribes to Jesus the title, champion. Our so-called ‘heroes of the Bible’ were not heroes at all, they were real people like us. The only difference is they realized that at the end of the day, it is Christ working in and through them.
This summer, we will look at the lives of some real people and the Champion whom they pursued.

JONAH - Misguided Patriotism
O how things go awry when one forgets the essence of who God is. It’s the essence that guides how we view God, how we view others, and how we view ourselves. While he may have been considered a Hebrew of Hebrews, Jonah’s love for God somehow shifted. The shift wasn’t sudden, rather, it occurred gradually over a number of months and years. It was a hard lesson for him to learn, but learn he did! We’ll let Jonah tell the rest of his story…

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.

Messy Saints
And so we begin our look at some notable ‘saints’, mentioned in the Bible and elsewhere. What makes a saint a saint? First, they all deal with ‘stuff’ in their life that they’d just rather not talk about. Second, there’s very little they have in common with each other. And third, at some point in their lives, they all became sold out for God. Why? Well, this is where Jesus comes into the picture, because it is Jesus who is the real hero in our lives!

As Jesus enters into the next topic of his ‘sermon’, there is an assumption he makes that “Of course you pray, doesn’t everyone?” Three times in his topic on prayer he begins the sentence with, “When you pray…”. The way he talks, you would almost think that he sees praying much like breathing. “Of course you breathe, doesn’t everyone?” And his caution to us is not so much what we pray, but how and why we pray. When you think about it, who better than Jesus would know what prayer is all about?

Jesus calls each and every one of us to follow him. The motive isn’t so much to do what he does, as it is to be who he is.

If you’ve been following along with us on our journey through Jesus’ sermon on the mount, you may have been wondering or thinking to yourself, “That sounds nice, but it’s not realistic.”. You wouldn’t be faulted for having thought, either. Some of Jesus’ teachings do seem to border on the impossible-to-do’s. When Jesus tells us to ‘love our enemies’ (you know…those who want to take us out), it does seem impossible when you’re in the thick of that situation. The truth be told; Jesus’ teachings are not impossible. It all depends on what you’re pursuing.

For the next two Sundays we are hitting pause on our journey through Jesus’ sermon on the mount as we set our hearts towards Easter, remembering Jesus’ death and celebrating his resurrection. And so we begin with Holy Week and Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. His followers had so many expectations of things they were hoping for, but you have to wonder if deep down they were trying to make sense of this event mixed with Jesus’ talk of death, his miracles, and the disgust the religious elite had towards him and his followers. What expectations might they have had? What expectations do you have?

Broken Bonds...Broken Hearts

When a serious car accident occurs the police and ambulance services are summoned, and when they arrive, they focus on their respective responsibilities. The police investigate the cause while the paramedics bind up the wounded. In his Sermon, Jesus addresses the painful reality of divorce. To understand what Jesus is saying we must first consider the filter we are using when reading his words. Are we reading it through the Law or through ‘love your neighbour as yourself’ (the Royal Law)? Is Jesus a cop or a paramedic?

Desire, Sex, and The Royal Law

Jesus does not shy away from the ‘delicate’ subjects, rather, he confronts the prevailing attitudes and interpretations of the law head-on. Take the subject of sex. He yanks it out of the arena of ‘behaviour’ and goes after the real issue – the heart. Jesus reminds us that sexual desire and intimacy are from God, and as such, we must view it through the lens of the Royal Law – Love your neighbour as yourself.

Ubuntu - I Am Because You Are (all life is sacred)

And so we now leave ‘what we know’ and follow Jesus into his core teaching, or REAL LIFE (Sermon on the Mount). At times THE WAY will feel familiar. At other times, it will be jarring. Things are going to seem foreign, but pay attention to your heart. As you continue to move forward, deeper into THE WAY, you will notice a stirring within you, and that stirring is life...REAL LIFE.

Jesus’ entry point begins with the sacredness of all of creation, and we are part of that creation. How I care for you is how I care for myself, and how I care for God. In African culture, there is a word that seems to capture how Jesus lived. That word is ‘ubuntu’. Apparently, the English language doesn’t have a word to capture the meaning, which is – I am because you are. In other words, all life is sacred.

Training for THE WAY

In reading Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, one could easily think, “Just do life the way Jesus does and all will go well.” The problem with adopting that mindset is that we fall into the rut of ‘sin management’, and that’s not the life Jesus has called us into. As Dallas Willard writes in his book, The Spirit of the Disciplines, “So, if we wish to follow Christ – and to walk in the easy yoke with him – we will have to accept his overall way of life as our way of life totally.” I know, this sounds hard, but believe me, the Jesus Way leads to the best life!

“Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

Matt. 11: 29-30

One of the fascinating aspects of being a follower of Jesus in the tech age is that we have access to a myriad of ‘Christian resources’ right at our fingertips. Today, we can install every version of the Bible on our smartphones, if we so choose…and have it read to us! Keep in mind that 600 years ago, fortunate was the person who had a written copy of some of the Bible!

But the bigger question is, “Do we know how to read it and understand it?” Jesus came to set the record straight, and in doing so he upset the apple cart of the religious elite. As Jesus asked one of them, “How do you read it?”

And yet Jesus thinks differently of those who choose to follow him. The life that Jesus has called us to live and the ‘good news’ he has called us to be is the salt and light that the world needs. BE salt. BE light.

So often we examine and study the ‘trees’ of the Beatitudes, but forget to step back and marvel at the forest. The Beatitude ‘forest’ has a message for us and for our world…but only if we’ll step back and listen. Are you listening?

For a child, it was a beautiful introduction to God’s Son…like who wouldn’t love him? But that was only one side. Living the Jesus Way is a life like no other, but don’t think for a second that it’s the easy life. And Scripture basically says just that. We choose to follow Jesus, not because he offers an easy life, but because there really is ‘no life like it’! Living Into the Transformed Life – A guide to the Jesus Way

What does it mean to be a Christian? What does it mean to be a follower of Jesus? To be a disciple? Are they all the same, or do they mean different things? Can I be one of those things and not the other? If you are reading this, then you have probably identified with one of those designations, or all of them, at one time or another in your life. What was it that brought you to become a follower of Jesus…a Christian?

When Jesus began his public ministry, he didn’t come with a new angle on life, or a new approach or perspective. Jesus didn’t come to give us a guaranteed pass into heaven when we die. Instead, Jesus brought Heaven to us. He arrived with the bold announcement – “I have Great News for everyone - Heaven is near and it’s time to re-think the life you’re living, and embrace with body, mind and soul, the REAL LIFE (Good News) I'm offering you!" This LIFE he offers is unlike anything you’ve experienced.

But with each choice that we make, if we’ll look underneath, we’ll find something deeper that has influenced that choice. Sometimes the choices we make determine the road we find ourselves on. Such was the case with Moses’ protégé, Joshua. Joshua was presented with many choices, and what he chose made all the difference.

We cannot control how 2022 unfolds in the weeks and months to follow, but we do have a say in the choices that we make. Joshua shows us the one choice that makes all the difference.

All of those could be an expression of love, but do they define it? When you tie together all the statements and declarations of love from Jesus and the New Testament writers, you get a taste of the infinite potency of love – the absolute power of God. This is the LOVE that we celebrate at this time of year. LOVE has a name, and that name is JESUS!

The scramble for peace in our world has been occurring since time immemorial. We long for peace, nations have peace talks, they even make treaties and have great intentions to fulfill them, but peace remains elusive to our world. Have you ever wondered why? In our attempts to control the outward circumstances we forget that peace will remain elusive ‘out there’ until Peace makes its home ‘in here’…our hearts. God sent his Son, Jesus, into our world not to solve our political problems, but to bring peace to our troubled hearts. That’s where it begins.

The Season of Advent
Humble King - when royalty meets humility

We now enter into the season of ‘waiting’, which is exactly what the word ‘advent’ means. It’s not a meaningless wait, but one with expectation, hope and desire. It’s the posture of what it means to be Christian. We wait, and allow God to come into the world in the form of Jesus. Not with flash and fanfare, rather with humility. We welcome ‘God with us’! During Advent, we will glimpse into the mystery when royalty met humility in the tiny form of Jesus.

The Humble King of Hope
Hope. One of the elements of waiting is expectation of what was promised will in fact occur. Possible? Just talk to any couple who are pregnant and are waiting for the birth of this new human being growing inside of the mother. It is not uncommon to hear people exclaim, “We are expecting!” Not only is there joy in that statement, but a solid hope, that this birth will happen! Jesus has been given to the world. And now, his followers wait with hope for his return.

A Life Worth Living - There’s a shaking going on throughout the Church in North America that happens from time to time. Shakings aren’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s uncomfortable to us because it shakes those areas we have become comfortable in. But how cool is it that God loves us too much to let us linger in our comfort. God instead is calling us and inviting us to not just a good life, but to REAL LIFE.

The Undercurrent of His Heart

Who is this Jesus that we say we follow and worship? There are books, teaching, seminars, songs and movies about him, but do we really know him? When you consider the various accounts recorded in Scripture about him, you do have to stop and ask yourself what it is that drives him to do and say things that he does. When you begin to pay really close attention, you begin to discover this quiet, powerful undercurrent that flows deep within Jesus. This is the One who calls us to follow. Let’s accept the challenge from the writer of the book of Hebrews to “…think carefully about this Jesus whom we declare to be God’s messenger and High Priest.” (3:1)

Have you ever wondered how finite beings can adequately worship the infinite God of this universe? Well, if we’re going to measure worship, then the answer is obvious: We can’t. But worship isn’t a commodity to be measured, rather, it flows from the love within our hearts. Love is infinite. We love because God first loved us. How did God love us? The angels give us the answer:

There are times when life swirls around us and it feels like everything is upended and all over the place. A word that probably describes that feeling best is dismembered…pulled apart. When that happens, it’s difficult to know where to start putting things back together. Even our faith-walk with Jesus seems to get shaken up. So where to start? We start with Jesus. We re-member him.

The Healer of Our Souls:
Amid all the noise in our world, there is a voice that is calling to us. You can barely hear it, but if you’ll stop and listen, you can make out the words that go something like, “Come…be with me, and let me heal you.” That voice is, and always has been, none other than Jesus. Jesus calls us to take our eyes off the news feeds, off the social media posts, and off the notifications that continually intrude into our space. To be still, to sit, and experience the healing power of his presence.

Thankfulness…the Power to Shape

This weekend we’ll be gathering with family and friends, either safely in person, or via video, but whichever way you gather, the central focus for us is thanksgiving. The words, thank you get tossed around quite a bit in our day-to-day conversations, so much so, that it is can almost be synonymous to our reply ‘fine’ when asked how you are. Something like…“Hey man, thanks so much!” “Thank you” “Thx”

Interestingly enough is the fact that thankfulness and its many variations are peppered throughout all of the Bible. But did you know that thanks or thankfulness is more about an inward perspective on life than a response to a favour received? Thankfulness is a heart-response of love to God, and to all other people.

Truth & Reconciliation "The Path Forward" - Scott Roe

This past week, Canada took a day to reflect, remember, and consider the ways forward in the ongoing quest for reconciliation between the Indigenous people of Canada and the rest of Canadians, and in particular, those of us who are white. The word reconciliation is a pivotal word in the message of the Good News that Jesus brought to our world. It means to strive to bring together for the purpose of peace.

A hymn of the early church (quoted in Colossians) states: “For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, and through him God reconciled everything to himself.” As followers of Jesus, our only option forward is reconciliation. Why? Because as his followers, we follow the ‘royal law’ – love your neighbour as yourself. As Jesus, so us!

Truth & Reconciliation - "Forgive Us Our Sins" - Scott Roe

September 30 has been declared as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day set aside for Canadians to honour the indigenous people of this land, and acknowledge our role in coming alongside those who have suffered unspeakable harm. Much harm was caused as a result of the Residential Schools which were operated by the Church and founded by the Canadian government. But the time has come to not only acknowledge the wrong that has been done, but to take tangible steps to learn from the indigenous people and to walk with them towards reconciliation and healing. We have a responsibility to God and to the indigenous people of Canada to take this journey. This Sunday is the first step on that journey. Let us never forget!
