In April of 2021, then-Labour-leader Keir Starmer visited the city of Bath on one of those visits where politicians walk around a place and pretend to care about the people who live there. 

He wasn’t prepared for what Bath resident, and proprietor of The Raven Pub, Rod Humphris, had to tell him. Humphris gave Starmer a piece of his mind about the destructive and authoritarian lockdowns, and then when the Labour leader tried to take refuge in the pub Humphris owned, he threw him out.

The whole thing is beautiful, and you can see video of it below.

I say we need a lot more people like Rod Humphris. But Humphris doesn’t think that will be enough to address the depth of what has been destroyed, nor the overwhelming power that the government of Britain has over the people who live there.

So goes the standard mainstream view of a free society, and free markets. If you went to a government school, you heard some version of this.

Economist Guido Hulsmann has a new book out that tears this caricature to shreds. In Abundance, Generosity, and the State: An Inquiry into Economic Principles, Dr. Hulsmann systematically demonstrates the ways in which people naturally tend to help each other and to produce goods and services that do not directly benefit them in any material way.

He then shows us how government intervention works to stifle and even squash much of this activity – from government control in money and banking encouraging irresponsible financial behavior and discouraging voluntary donations (if you take nothing else from this interview, be sure to take note of the “saturation mechanism” and what happens to it in an interventionist system), to the tragic outcomes of the welfare state. 

Dr. Hulsmann turns the standard caricature on its head, and shows us in painstaking detail, how it is not freedom, but coercive interventions in the lives of free people that work to create a society of self-centered and atomized individuals.

Dr Hülsmann is a professor of economics at the University of Angers in France. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Mises Institute and a corresponding member of the Pontifical Academy for Life.

Hospital staff then spent 40 days administering hospital protocols that Rebecca says resulted in her death, at 28 years of age.

Danielle had special needs, and had had someone with her at all times during her life. In the hospital, she was isolated, forcibly restrained, deprived of food, and prohibited from seeing her mother.

Rebecca has filed a malpractice and negligence suit against the hospital staff, in Nassau Supreme Court, NY, and we discuss that in this episode. (She was unable to file a wrongful death suit because the deadline for doing so had expired.) You can read her summons and complaint, here.

We also talk about Rebecca's bigger mission: To hold accountable all medical practitioners who were - and are - complicit in the wrongful deaths of countless victims of Covid-19 protocols. Protocols for which hospitals receive generous financial payouts from the federal government.

Danielle's tragedy is not an isolated one. It is horrifying, and perhaps hard to believe, that individuals working in hospitals are quite literally killing patients for money. It is unfortunate that we need to create our own tools and solutions to protect ourselves from these people, but we do. Rebecca's website and app can be very powerful tools in this effort, and I urge everyone to check them out and to help spread the word.

Now we have our Solzhenitsyn!"

Kristi is too modest to accept the comparison, but I think it is apt. We've had mountains of reporting on the effects of the experimental gene therapy for Covid-19, we've seen the excess death numbers, the myocarditis studies, the increased cancer rates. But while all of these facts and numbers tell an important story, they don't touch us in the same way that the intimate details of one person's life do. The statistics don't move us as stories about the suffering, the love, and the spirit, of a single individual do.

"On This Day, Last Year" chronicles the last six months of the life of Kristi's mother, who developed turbo cancer after taking the Covid-19 vaccine. But her account is about much more than the effects of the vaccine. It is a painstakingly detailed accounting – and indictiment – of the inhumanity of institutionalized healthcare. And I believe that it is the kind of writing that is needed now more than ever.

In this interview, I speak with Kristi about her life before her mother's cancer diagnosis, including getting fired from her job because she declined the Covid vaccine. We talk about how she came to write her account; about her mother's powerful spirit, even in her last days; and about how we overcome this inhuman system.

Like most libertarians, The Brownstone Institute's Jeff Tucker has long been a proponent of open borders. So have I. But we both feel that events of the past few years require a more thoughtful response than the standard anti-state-border rhetoric. Including, perhaps, admissions that we've been wrong all along.

Have we?

Jeff and I explore some of the complexities of the current crisis along the southern border of the US, the Texas standoff, and immigration more generally. What's happening at the border goes well beyond what we generally think of as "immigration", and Jeff and I talk about what's behind that, and the ways in which immigrants are being used to further political agendas and disrupt the democratic process. We also talk about ways in which the post-9-11 tightening of immigration restrictions have exacerbated the problem.

I talk a little about my experience living in Japan – a country with strict immigration controls, and a strong, cohesive culture that I don't think many Americans can relate to. And as much as government management of immigration has created problems and allowed for immigration to be weaponized, it's not entirely clear that a stateless society would have the ability to produce or protect cultural cohesion in this way. (Although, to be fair, in most of the world, the state fails at this too.)

SPOILER: We don't come away with any answers. But we both agree that these are questions that need to be wrestled with, and we will continue to wrestle.

We talk about the practicalities of Goldbacks, how they are made, how to use them, and how to know they are what they say they are. We talk about why Goldbacks are legal, and how they are different from other atempts at implementing sound money. And Cordon points out that these bills go a long way to solving the age-old problem of divisibility into small denominations.

Which is huge. But even more impressive: Goldbacks could potentially solve the problem of Gresham's Law.

Let me back up. At around 38:00 we talk about this, but I realize that we don't really explain what we're talking about. So here's the explanation:

Those of us who oppose fiat money do so because it is essentially a mechanism for stealing the wealth created by individuals in a society. Governments that "create money out of thin air" are engaged in a kind of counterfeiting, whereby they "print" money that they can spend with the same purchasing power of existing money. Only later - after the state and its cronies have benefited - does their inflation of the money supply result in price inflation (theft) for society as a whole.

You would think that the solution to this costly corruption of money would be for someone to come up with competing forms of money that cannot be counterfeitied or otherwise inflated. But the problem - aside from any legal barriers - is Gresham's Law.

Gresham's Law  tells us that "bad money drives out good." What this means is that when there is "bad" (inflatable) money in an economy, people will want to spend that money, and hold on to any "good" money they may have. If the dollar is inflating, then there is very little incentive to spend your precious metals. The sensible thing to do is to hang on to precious metals and spend your dollars.

And so, because of Gresham's Law, it becomes very difficult to introduce sound money into an economy where unsound money is already circulating. (An aside: Until hyperinflation hits. Here's  where I saw that happen  many years ago.)

Well Goldbacks may have just solved that problem. How? It's all in this episode!

Things are a little different in other parts of the world, and my guest, Ivor Cummins (The Fat Emperor), may have had some success in getting through to politicians and civil servants with some facts and reasoned argument about the lockdowns. He talks about what happened, and how his efforts may have helped to get the government there to back down a little.

He also talks about what most of the media is getting wrong about Covid-19; explains why we are in a "casedemic" rather than a true "epidemic" (also how the WHO changed the definition of "pandemic" in a way that benefitted those eager to sell vaccines to governments around the world); tells us what we can expect in the fall, and what indicators to keep an eye on in order to distinguish truth from hype; and talks a little about Vitamin D as a protective agent against Covid-19 (and many other bad things), and how that information has been censored from public discourse by the FDA.

We chat about some of the differences between how the Covid-19 outbreak has been handled in the US vs. in South Korea, as well as how people living in both places have reacted to it all.

After recording this podcast, I was struck by something that I had kind of forgotten about in all the years since moving back to the US from Asia. I remember coming back, not the last time, in 2000, but the time before that, in 1996, from two plus years in Japan. 

It was probably the worst culture shock I have ever experienced. Because I was coming from a place where I never had to think about politics. I could focus just on work, and writing, and friends, and appreciating the beauty around me. It was such a beautiful time. 

Even my time in Hong Kong, where I was a journalist and was focused on politics, was so different from being here. I never feared the government while I lived there. I worried about what the Chinese government might do after 1997, but I wasn't really afraid, and I certainly didn't fear the government (pre- or post- handover) while I was there.

Coming to the US from that was a huge shock, and not only because of the government. The things that stand out for me the most are: Being inundated with loud, violent, scary images all the time. In entertainment and on the news, which a lot of people seemed to be tuned in to ALL the time. There were the constant car pursuits, where police chased citizens in cars for god only knows what reasons; there were the reality TV shows following police around as they broke into people's homes and threw them down on their lawns; there was the constant, constant fear porn masquerading as news, with furrowed-browed newscasters issuing dire warnings about all the things we were supposed to be afraid of today.

I was in Tokyo when the Aum Shinrikyo sarin gas attack took place - on a subway train I sometimes rode on. It was a huge shock, but people's lives got back to normal pretty quickly. Probably there were some additional security measures put in place after that - but if there were, I never heard about them. And the event wasn't used as an excuse to clamp down on the free movement of peaceful people, as every crisis in this country is.

My interview today reminded me of all of this - of what it is like to live in a country where you don't fear your own government. And I don't mean that the governments of Japan or Hong Kong were completely libertarian (although HK came very close), or perfect by any means. But, speaking as a foreigner living there for many years, those governments were in the background. I never worried about them doing the things I worry about the US government doing to the people living under it.

I want so badly to get back to that kind of place. A place where I don't have to be obsessed with politics, where I don't feel like the biggest issue outside of my own personal ones is an out-of-control state rampaging over our society.

It is possible to live in a peaceful, civilized, culture. I know, because I have lived in some. I just don't know if it is possible here.

Larry also has some pretty dismal predictions for what is coming next. It would be easy to dismiss some of these predictions as "crazy conspiracy theories", or whatever terms people now use to not have to think about uncomfortable possibilities. But one thing I know about Larry is that his predictions thus far have been pretty accurate, especially re: Beach-Ball mandates in CA and in the US broadly.

He has also been right about Vitamin C, and thankfully, some doctors in the US are starting to recognize that. Tune in to hear what Larry thinks is coming next for those who oppose official narratives on vaccines and medical treatment.
