Just a few years after the seminal 'adults only' graphic magazine was introduced to a hungry North America came an honest-to-God big budgeted 'adults only' animated film adaption. Sure there had been a handful of restricted animated films before it but this was by far the biggest in scope and profile.

Books like The Damnation Game and Weaveworld and the films Nightbreed and Lord of Illusions were unleashed with Barker as the chief creator and others' interpretations of his stories have followed over the years.
Comic books, both based on his movies and original concepts, came out in the 1990s and of course, his paintings and illustrations emerged into the forefront of the Barkerverse.

And with that, our collective minds were forever altered, the image of an odd space child with an adults' strange cadence confronts Captain Kirk and laughs that bizarre laugh..
Clint Howard is one of those character actors you have seen.
Maybe in a cameo, maybe in a larger part, but you have seen him.
As the younger brother of Ron Howard, the man has been in excess of 250 films but only starred in two. His small role as Eaglebauer in the seminal Rock & Roll High School is classic. Rug Head in The Wraith is unforgettable. His performances as the star in Ice Cream Man and Evilspeak are sublime...

Monsters and music - two great things that go great together!

Sure the supernatural and the devilish has always had a corner of music since music began. Classical music and opera toyed with deals with the devil, murder and madness. Folk songs reflected dark fables, mystical creatures and witches. Early blues and bluegrass sang about the worst of humanity and Faustian deals.

But it's really Heavy Metal and Rock that some musicians REALLY embraced all things dark and monstrous, to the delight of millions. And when these folks caught on of course monster rock bands would be fictionalized and represented in movies too.

Join Glenn and Luis as they chat about the musicians that embrace and project the macabre. From devious do-wop, Bobby 'Boris' Pickett, T.V. horror hosts, Alice Cooper, ISS, The Misfits and The Cramps to the amazing fake bands of Phantom of the Paradise - jeez, Glenn even manages to squeeze in his old band M.S.I - we gab about them all!

THE MAGIC OF POWER RECORDS

Come take a trip with us waaay waay back to a time before superhero and comics based t.v. and movies were everywhere. A kid's comics fix was relegated to a couple of 60's cartoons, the occasional Saturday morning show and.. well... actual comic books.

Then along came POWER RECORDS to deliver a bridge between the printed and the live action experience. Heroes had a voice via actors, sound effects and music you could listen to as you looked at the comic issue depicted.

Sure it was just a cooler version of those school film strips with the bell to tell you to move the projected image forward but hey.. beggars can't be choosers!

In this one we quickly go over a history of POWER RECORDS, we talk about our impressions and the experience of stories told audibly while looking at the panels.

Gab a bunch about select favorite issues ( surprise.. it's the monster ones), the artists involved, where you went to seek out these artifacts (wasn't no comic stores back then) and we even go on a bit of a tangent.

There was no plans of any kind of sequel but money (plus ideas) talk and here we are, decades later and the Apes continue their cultural march across all media.

In this first of a 3 episode series Luis and Glenn tackle the book and the first two entries.

What the hell did I just say? That there is C.B.Trucker lingo and the boys are tackling a subculture that came to prominence in the seventies and into the eighties with the popularity of the first mode of personal broadcast: The C.B.Radio and with it the heroes that were the men (and some women) that piloted those white line tankers: the eighteen wheel trucks.

Music, movies and more emerged to glorify these asphalt heroes and Luis and Glenn discus a bunch of them in this first part of a two part podcast.

They didn't mean for this to be a two part episode but things got away from them.

A massive 80 page tome with a mini 26 page zine Velcro-ed inside!

Why did we do it? What happened to it? Why didn't we do more?

The Golden Age of Made For T.V. Movies

Starting in the 1960s the big three U.S. television stations went into feature film production as a means of self generating films and creating exciting televised 'events' to counter those pesky big screen theatres that were pulling audiences like crazy.

Thus was born the Movie of the Week !! The feature length specials that made television history.

Sure they were burdened with low budgets and constrained with prime time censorship but they circumvented these restrictions with wit, suggestion and slight of hand.

This resulted in some glorious genre classics - Horror. Thrillers. Exploitation. Fantasy, you name it and sometimes they got away with some jaw dropping subject matter too!

Some films launched careers, some launched television series, some have been all but forgotten.

Marvel Comics' Horror Heroes

The Last day of Suspect Video - Toronto's best video store

Suspect Video was a cultural mecca for 25 years in Toronto, Canada.
Starting in 1991 it carried the most eccentric, eclectic, rare videos as well as books, magazines, toys and other ephemera in North America and garnered a huge following among those interested in going deeper than the mainstream in their entertainment.
With a stock of 90,000 videos for rent it was also one on the largest collections in the world.
Visited by celebs as varied as Weird Al, Samuel Jackson, Peter Jackson, Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Dario Argento and many more.
It was controversial.
It was maddening.
It prompted conversation and debate.
And it was much loved, winning 'best of' lists year after year.
Alas, though it continues online, the physical stores are no more.
Join founders Luis and Merrill and long time employee and underground icon Glenn as they talk about the history of Suspect Video in the store itself on the last day of it's existence.
