From Prison to the Nations (Part 2). Sharif's Story of Persecution, Mission and Revival

In this episode of the Release International Voice podcast, Tom Hardy continues his conversation with Sharif, a former radicalised Muslim from a family of imams who encountered Christ while in prison.

We rejoin the story after his conversion, when Sharif was given an additional year behind bars on a charge of blasphemy, a sentence he calls 'the best year of my life.' From there, he describes the devastating fallout: his family’s fury at his decision to follow Jesus, the burning of his documents, his disowning, the loss of inheritance, and even a fatwa permitting his killing. The threats that followed forced him into a life of constant movement.

Despite this, Sharif was later sent as a missionary to a Muslim-majority island, where he witnessed extraordinary provision and spiritual harvest in the face of persistent persecution.

He also reflects on the tension between Indonesia’s constitutional protections for religious freedom and the harsh realities on the ground - village-level hostility, church closures and burnings, and ongoing legal pressure through hate-speech accusations.

Sharif closes by urging believers to pray for revival, courage, and steadfastness for those enduring persecution today.

Armenia: The forgotten Christian story

Twen: Imprisoned for faith, sustained by grace

Twen had been a Christian for only 2 years when she was arrested and imprisoned in Eritrea at the age of 21. She had no idea she would spend the next 16 years locked away in the Eritrean prison system for choosing to follow Jesus. Over the years she suffered intense persecution, but by the grace of God, she survived violent beatings, isolation in scorching-hot shipping containers, deprivation of water and food, and even being thrown into a pit of poisonous snakes.

Living the best life in Lebanon

“Pray for us,” writes the Apostle Paul, toward the end of his letter to the Colossians, “that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ – on account of which I am in prison.” (Col. 4:3) A few verses later Paul ends that letter with a simple, moving request: “Remember my chains.” (Col. 4:18)

Polycarp Zongo: A captive story

When preparing for a long car journey, you might factor in the possibility of a breakdown, but few of us would anticipate the possibility of being kidnapped. However, for Christians living in north and central Nigeria that possibility is an increasing risk, not least for Christian pastors.

In October 2020, while travelling to a conference, Nigerian pastor Rev Polycarp Zongo was kidnapped by the terrorist group Islamic State West Africa Province. Jamal: From building palaces to strengthening faith

How did you come to faith in Jesus, and how are you serving him today? At Release International we are privileged to work with partners from many different countries and it is always encouraging to hear their stories.

One of those partners, Jamal Liddawi, has a miraculous story to share. 30 years ago God started to work dramatically in Jamal’s life, and since he committed to following Jesus, Jamal has been involved in various types of Christian work. Today he leads Release International’s partner ministry, Hand of Help, which serves displaced Christians in Iraq. Jesus warned his disciples, ‘If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.’ Throughout history persecution has taken many different forms and come from a variety of sources. At this particular moment in time, in many parts of the world the growth of radicalised Islam is one pressing threat against God’s people.

Burkina Faso: One million displaced

Last year on the podcast we spoke to Release International partner Hassan John about the problems of violence and unrest in West Africa. On today’s podcast we are going to take a closer look at one specific country in that region: Burkina Faso.

You may not know much about Burkina Faso, but recently the actions of violent militant groups have made it a very difficult place for Christians to live. Our brothers and sisters there are being targeted, displaced and killed because of their Christian faith.

2020 was a year like no other and one that many of us would probably rather forget. The pandemic continues to be at the forefront of our nation’s news coverage but it is not the only story in 2021. This year Christians across the world will continue to face persecution. From Africa to South East Asia our brothers and sisters in Christ will be violently opposed because of their faith and their stories must also hold our attention.

Where is Raymond Koh?

On February 13, 2017 Pastor Raymond Koh was abducted off the streets of Malaysia. He hasn’t been seen or heard from since, and his car has never been found. Raymond’s case has drawn international attention from Christians, governments and human rights organisations.

At Release International we have been running a petition to the Malaysian Prime Minister and the Inspector General of the Malaysian police calling for information about Raymond’s disappearance to be released, and insisting that he is safely returned to his family. The burden I carry for my people

Iranian Christian Ebrahim Firouzi is currently serving an extended period of internal exile in south-east Iran. This follows his release from prison late last year where he served a 5-year sentence for ‘acting against national security.’

Although this charge was framed in political terms there is no doubt that it came as a direct result of Ebrahim’s decision to follow Jesus and share his faith with his fellow Iranians.

The following interview was originally conducted in Farsi by Joseph Hovsepian, the son of martyred Iranian church leader Haik Hovsepian. Lockdown

The world is still reeling from the impact of Covid-19 and everyone is affected in some way, not least persecuted Christians. As well as the regular opposition and marginalisation they face they also now have to cope with the spread of the virus and the restrictions of lockdown – in many cases without the health care provision and economic support we are so privileged to have in this country. Release International is working hard to support all of our international partners during this time of crisis.

In the UK we are approaching a sixth week of lockdown. On today’s podcast I am joined by Release workers Kenneth, James and Stephen. Freedom of religion, freedom of belief, is something we tend to take from granted in the West. We can believe in any god or no god - and crucially we can change our mind. When the evidence stacks up, or when we have an encounter we just can’t explain, we can change our position.
