Sarah Jane is a painter whose work often explores identity, sexuality and community. She’s particularly known for her portraits of queer sitters, work that combines boldness, colour and sensitivity where these works have been exhibited internationally. Her portrait of human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell hangs in the National Portrait Gallery, London, and she is currently chair of the Contemporary British Portrait Painters. Alongside her own painting, Sarah Jane teaches painting, has recently released books on portrait and landscape painting and she continues to advocate for LGBTQ+ plus visibility within the arts.

In this week's episode, Tom interviews New Zealand based artist, Andrew Tischler.

Andrew has been a professional artist for the past 17 years. He is drawn to vast landscapes, people, objects and animals, painting a wide variety of subjects in a realist style. His goal for every painting is to achieve a convincing sense of reality and break the constraints of the two dimensional surface.

His obsession with realist painting led him to study many of the great masters from the past and seek to understand how they made such magnificent pictures. He is not only a very successful painter but he has also amassed a huge following on YouTube having started his channel in 2016 which has now grown to over 400k followers.

Mailing lists can be a wonderful tool for any creator. Ask An Artist - Taking Risks: Is it worth it?

Running your own business is a risky business, with 20% of businesses failing in their first year and a shocking 60% failing within the first three. But making decisions and taking risks is all part of running any business, including the creative business of being an Artist. The calculation of risk is an essential skill which all artists and makers need to hone in order to forge ahead in their career.

In this episode, Peter and Tom share examples of creative and business orientated risks that they have taken and discuss why and how taking risks can be crucial in helping you to maintain momentum in your business. They also openly share examples of when taking risks has not worked out, why this may be and how they have used these situations to develop, learn and move forward.

Both Tom and Peter agree that the willingness to experiment with new ideas has been the key to their business growth. They bring the episode to a conclusion by talking about less quantifiable results which may emerge from taking risks; just because something might feel like a failure at the time, you never know what may come of it in the future…

This week's takeaway... risk taking is a part of running any business and artists and makers are not alone. Ask an Artist - Transitioning your art business, post-covid

Pricing your work is a complex issue and being consistent is one of the things that needs to be considered while working out your pricing. However that does not mean that all your work should be the same price, only that it should be priced consistently, according to its value. Small simple things clearly need to be cheaper than big complex things. Having work in different price brackets allows you so attract a wider range of clients with varying budgets - both Laura and Peter have works at different levels when they are in selling mode!

Part of the lives of many artists is the business of teaching. For some it is a financial necessity and for others it is an emotional or moral imperative. Whatever the reasons you have for teaching it does need to be taken seriously, you have an obligation to your students and doing it well can be massively rewarding.
Both Laura and Peter teach and both of them have years of positive experiences, hundreds of students who have had a great time and have gone away with a better understanding of the subject. Isn't that something to feel warm and fuzzy about!

Laura and Peter have very different responses to this, Peter has kept sketchbook throughout his professional career whilst Laura has some but their use is slightly more ad hoc. The consistent thing for both of them is that it is important to take notes, both written and visual.The sketchbook is peter's go to place for these, but Laura is quite likely to use the back of an envelope, or a sheet of paper.

Copyright is a proper minefield! There to protect intellectual property, it is misunderstood by the majority of people who seek its protection and by the majority of people who contravene its rules. Sal Shuel spent some of her working life in the rôle of 'expert witness' in court cases over issues of copyright. Her background was in photographic picture libraries at a time when copyright law was being revised and her straight forward approach to what is and isn't permissible was massively helpful to photographers who had had their work used inappropriately. Copyright law is the same in the art world as it is for photographers and Sal's knowledge is likely to deliver a few surprises to many listeners!

It's great to hear what artists think about galleries, but that is only one side of the story. Today Peter and Laura talk to Nick Bentley, owner of Bils and Rye, a wonderful gallery in the North Yorkshire town of Kirkby Moorside. Bils and Rye have a great portfolio of artists including sculptors, painters, printmakers (including Laura, which is how we were able to lure Nick into our studio!) and ceramicists. Nick's view is that a gallery needs to be more than a place that potential buyers might visit: it has to be pro-active, finding both artists and buyers and fostering a healthy relationship with both in order to thrive as a business.
