The conflict between God and the devil has raged since the beginning. Christians are naturally drawn into this battle by choosing Christ. But this is a life and death struggle, and those who choose the side of the Lord must fight to win - otherwise, they will lose. There's no place for slacking off or just going through the motions.

Epaphroditus

Paul had great praise for Epaphroditus who risked his life "for the work of Christ." Paul called him a "fellow worker," a "fellow soldier" and "my brother." We can all learn much from Epaphroditus about serving in the kingdom of God.

Come and See

The word "evangelism" conjures up pictures of campaigns and door knocking. But one of the easiest and still effective means of reaching people with the gospel is to invite them to worship. Jesus invited people to follow Him. When he had found the Messiah, Philip encouraged Nathanael to "Come and see." He did, and the rest is history.

Life is in the Blood

God gave Israel the blood of sacrificial animals to make atonement, or a covering, for their sins. Now, Jesus' blood has been given to all people as a sacrifice for sin which will completely remove sins and provide forgiveness. But how does a person avail themselves of Jesus' sacrificial blood?

Naaman Believes

When Naaman the Syrian was instructed by the prophet Elisha to dip seven times in the Jordan to cleanse his leprosy, he lost it! But he was persuaded to do what the prophet said to do, and he was cleansed of his disease. However, the cleansing of his leprosy was not the greatest thing which happened with Naaman in all of this. Do you know what it was?

A Worthy Walk

Paul goes to great lengths to inform the church at Colossae who Christ Jesus is and of all that He has done for them and for all people. As Creator of all things, firstborn from the dead, and the One who reconciled all things to Himself (among other things), He is without equal. This should prompt all of His disciples to live in a way which is worthy of the One who gave His life for them.

I Am

God told Moses from the burning bush that He was "I AM WHO I AM." John goes to great lengths in his gospel to show that Jesus came in the flesh to explain or declare God to us - that in fact He was this "I AM." In a conversation with some Jews, Jesus said "before Abraham was I AM." They knew what he meant and picked up stones to stone Him. Never doubt that Jesus was God become flesh.

Doubting God

Have you ever doubted God? Not that He exists, but that with all His promises to take care of His people, there are still a lot of bad things happening? Maybe your prayers aren't being answered? Incredibly, John the Baptist also did some doubting. Despite his whole life being prophetically announced, when he was imprisoned by Herod, he began to wonder if Jesus was really the Coming One.

Just as God's people are in the world but not of the world, they are also living in a human body but not of that body. They are "living stones" being built up in a spiritual house, the new living temple of God with Jesus as the chief cornerstone. They are a "holy priesthood" offering up "spiritual sacrifices" through their good deeds and Christ-like behavior.

The Sadducees learned a hard lesson when they posed a question to Jesus whose answer to them included these words: "You are mistaken, not understanding the scriptures..." How well do we read and understand the scriptures?

With all of the shootings, fraud, drug overdosing, political divisiveness, etc. in the news, it's often difficult to think there's anything good in the world. We can't allow ourselves to be distracted by all the evil (one of the devil's tactics), but to develop a heart and eye to look for what is beautiful and good. God has set a lot of beauty in His world if we but look for it.

Keeping the Traditions

In the first century, people from both Jewish and pagan religious backgrounds were being added to this new church of Christ followers. In their former religions, they had traditions which they observed. The question became, then, what do we do in our new faith? Dirty Laundry

When our clothes get dirty and smelly we put them in the laundry basket and eventually into the wash machine to get clean. When a Christian sins, how does she get those sin stains removed? Only one thing can remove sin and that's the blood of Christ. So if we don't remain in the faith and bring our sins to Jesus for removal, will we be cleansed of those sins?

"The Thief on the Cross" #2 - Last time we heard Jesus make a promise to the one thief crucified beside Him, that he would be in Paradise that day with Jesus. Some folks today try to draw the conclusion from this that since this thief was not baptized then people today do not need to be baptized either. Two things make this position illogical and untenable. First, when correctly understood, scripture will never contradict itself. Second, today, we are under the New Covenant. The thief was not. Let's take a look.

All Means All

Jesus' instructions in Matthew about making disciples (28:18-20), include several uses of the word "all." Some of these speak of an inclusiveness and others of an exclusiveness. We need to correctly understand what Jesus is teaching us and telling us to do. We need to remind ourselves that all means all.

Covenants, Old and New

Covenants have been the primary way in which God has dealt with individuals and peoples from early on. Some of these early covenants are still in effect, but some are not. Misunderstanding these differences has led to a lot of confusion in what people believe today and how they try to serve and worship God. In fact, many Christians don't even know what a covenant is!

Not Your Usual Family Reunion

When Joseph's brothers return to Egypt to buy grain they bring Benjamin, a stipulation by "the man." When Joseph's silver cup is planted in Benjamin's sack and "discovered," Judah steps up to plead for the lad since he had become surety for him to his father Jacob. This is too much for Joseph, and he breaks down in tears as he reveals himself, telling his brothers that God has been behind it all in order to save them during the famine. Since both shepherds and Hebrews were loathsome to Egyptians, how else could God have them sheltered there except by having a Hebrew over the whole land?

Revenge is BIttersweet

The famine is so severe that Jacob sends his sons to buy grain in Egypt. Joseph recognizes them, but they don't know him. He speaks harshly to them and treats them rather roughly. He accuses them of being spies and finally holds Simeon hostage until they go back to Canaan and return with their younger brother. All of this sparks guilt in the brothers seeing these events coming upon them for what they had done previously to Joseph.

From the Pit to the Palace

Joseph languished in prison for two years, but when Pharaoh had dreams, the chief cupbearer remembered him. Not only was Joseph able to interpret Pharaoh's dreams, but he was also able to give him a remedy for the coming seven years of devastating famine. All this was by the power of God, of course. Pharaoh was so moved that he elevated Joseph to the second place of power in all of Egypt with all its benefits. Joseph immediately went to work to prepare for the coming seven years of famine.

Doing Good but Being Forgotten

Joseph prospers in the prison because God is with him, and he applies himself. When the incarcerated chief cupbearer and chief baker have dreams, Joseph offers God's interpretations for them. The chief cupbearer's dream indicates that he will be restored to his position with Pharaoh. Joseph asks him to remember his plight, but the chief cupbearer fails to do so. Joseph is forgotten in the prison, but not by God.

Getting Recognized and Getting Railroaded

Joseph prospered as Potiphar's slave in Egypt because God was with him. But he got thrown into jail because of false accusations made against him by Potiphar's wife because he refused her advances. But even in the prison God caused him to prosper. Joseph is a great example for all of us when we are in that "life isn't fair" mindset.

Jesus, the Heart of it All

It is quite easy to turn the Christian faith into a rule-keeping exercise. "Do this, and don't do that." Certainly there are things to do and not do, but at the center of it all stands a person - Jesus Christ. He is the reason for and the focus of the Christian faith. He is alive at the right hand of God and intercedes for us even now. And the end of the journey is to be where He is. Do you love Jesus?

Angry to Death (Jonah #4)

After Nineveh repented, and Jonah saw that God relented of bringing disaster on the city, Jonah got angry. He went to the east of the city, made himself a little shack and waited to see if the Lord would really not destroy the city. Through the years, when God saw the need, He would bring about change and renewal. As Israel wandered further and further from keeping the moral and love commandments of its covenant with the Lord, He knew it was time for a change, an upgrade as we would say today. So He brought in a "new and living way" so that people could confidently draw near to Him and become the kind of people He wants us to be. God's Son Jesus brought in this way. In fact, He is the Way!

Beginning in the Old Testament, God indicates there are but two ways to live. One way leads to death, and one to life. Jesus affirmed this in His sermon on the mount. In fact, in the book of Acts we find in six places that the church was actually called "the Way." We're not sure of the origin of this designation, but it could be that they knew for certain that they had found the Way of life and the Way to life - and His name was Jesus. It's quite evident from the New Testament, that He was all they could talk about.

Joseph from Cyprus was given a "nickname" by the apostles - Barnabas. It means son of encouragement or exhortation. Love is Not for Sale

Was Abraham a Real Person?

The Kingdom of God - Inclusive Yet Exclusive

Wounds On Your Soul

Loving Your Neighbor

Jesus affirmed that "you shall love your neighbor as yourself" is the second greatest commandment (Leviticus 19:18). What does that mean? Some people interpret this as "love your neighbor as you love yourself", but no where in scripture is this rendered that way. In fact, some people are so totally self-centered they have a difficult time loving others, while some people loathe themselves, thinking they are of no account. What is the correct understanding of this command? If we look further into the context of Leviticus 19, we find the Holy Spirit gives us some great insight into the correct meaning of this law about relationships.

Through the prophet Ezekiel, the Lord sought for a man to stand in the gap of Jerusalem's broken spiritual wall so He would have reason not to bring destruction upon the entire nation. No one was found worthy! Today, Christians are called by their Lord to stand in the gap in the battle against evil, to support one another in times of trouble and to rescue those who are dying in sin. Going Home

If I Were the Devil

"If I Were the Devil" - The devil is a very real being whom scripture depicts as our adversary and an opponent of God and all that's good. Death in Two Acts

Episode 127…"Death in Two Acts" - When Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, did they die? God had said they surely would, but Adam lived to be 930 years old! What's with that? To understand what happened with Adam (and with all of us), we need to understand that we are two-part beings made of both body and soul. God cursed Adam and said that he would return to the dust from which he came, but what of his soul? If we dig into scripture, we will find the answer to our question, as well as God's remedy to rescue us from death.

(Episode 126) Jesus challenged His listeners (us today as well) whether they had a healthy/good eye or a bad eye. By that He meant whether we looked for what is good in people and the world or what is evil. With all of the evil and distressing distractions in the world, it is often difficult to see the good. This is a ploy of the devil to keep us distraught. We must learn to cultivate a good eye and to look for all that is beautiful in the world. And there is plenty of loveliness to be seen!

Two Chairs

Our "two chairs" visual represents two worldviews. One is the atheistic naturalist view of reality, and the other is the theistic supernaturalist view. The first excludes God altogether, and the second has God at the center of everything. Each one of us will sit in one of these chairs and view life from one of these perspectives. A person's worldview is the "lens" through which that person sees everything and orders their life. It is their truth. It is also one of the main reasons why there is so much conflict between people these days.

Jesus and His apostles ministered to the whole person - people were fed and healed, and they had the good news of the kingdom of heaven preached to them. Some of Jesus' final words demonstrate where our prime focus must be - to proclaim the gospel to all creation. To fill the bellies of thousands and leave their souls empty is a tragedy. It's the gospel that a weary and struggling world needs to hear!

Life is filled with struggles of all kinds. We struggle within ourselves with choices and responses to life situations. We struggle with relating to others. We even struggle with trying to understand God, and why He does or does not do certain things. Jacob's life was one struggle after another. His life is a picture of the life of every believer. When he returned to Canaan, he wrestled with the angel - a snapshot of his whole life. He was told: "...you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed." Is this true of us? Of you?

The Grace of Giving

Our giving on the first day of the week is often misunderstood. We tend to think our contribution is about material things and the rest of our worship (singing, prayer, Lord's Supper, etc) is about spiritual things. Nothing could be further from the truth! Our giving is a highly spiritual endeavor and is a reflection of our faith and trust in God who supplies our own needs. It is grounded in the grace of God which has been shown toward us in a multitude of ways.

Dishonoring God

"Dishonoring God" - When one thinks about the cross, suffering comes to mind. But humiliation and shame were also part of being crucified. Hebrews (12:2) tells us that Jesus despised the shame of the cross so as to complete His work. But Jesus was dishonored and shamefully treated even before His actual crucifixion. We would do well to consider how He was dishonored so as to avoid doing the same thing to Him even now.

"Facing the Ugly" - The world is filled with ugly - sin, evil, wickedness, etc. Sometimes we find it in ourselves! How do we handle ugly? How do you handle ugly? We need to fight against it in ourselves and try to rescue others from it as well. If we don't face the ugly, we'll never overcome it.

This is a commendable aspiration and should be pursued, but usually this involves big dreams like solving the homeless problem or finding a new source of clean energy. One of the recurring themes in the Bible is that people need help from God to do His will. Sarah received strength from God in her old age to conceive Isaac. Moses was given the power by God to perform miracles and stand before Pharaoh to lead Israel out of Egypt. There are numerous others. Paul was forced to rely upon God when he was given his "thorn in the flesh." When the Lord told him He would not remove this impediment, Paul learned to rely upon God's grace and the power of Christ in his life. He said that it was in his weakness that he became strong.

I Lay Down My Life

Jesus asserted that no one was taking His life from Him, but that He would lay it down for the sheep, and that He would take it up again. Paul affirmed that Jesus gave Himself up for us. Although this is all language which fits with the language of sacrifice, events surrounding the crucifixion indicate that Jesus willingly yielded up His Spirit. No one took His life. And He endured all of this freely and willingly so that you and I could have life eternal. Amazing love!

The True Vine

The vine imagery is used several places in the Old Testament to refer to Israel, a vine which God planted but produced only worthless grapes. Jesus says He is the "true vine", having been planted by His Father the vinedresser. He affirms that the branches which are in Him will be cleaned and pruned to bear much fruit. Those branches which do not remain in Him cannot bear fruit and will be cut off and burned. The disciples who remain in Jesus, the Vine, will experience the intimate love of Christ, be filled with His joy and bring glory to the Father.

All of us have sent out invitations and received invitations to special events: weddings, graduations, anniversary celebrations, etc. It's most interesting that God, also, invites people to come to Him for life and all its goodness. He does not coerce nor threaten but gives us freedom to choose. He does encourage us to come and receive all of the blessings He wants to give. He does warn of the consequences of refusing His invitation. But He leaves the choice up to us. His invitation has great appeal to various people: the thinkers, the burdened, and those thirsting for life. What about you?

You Are My Friends

Friends are a great blessing, and a good friend is hard to find. Jesus told His disciples that He would no longer call them slaves but friends. As such, He was elevating the status of their relationship, and also informing them of the expectations He had for them. He was doing all of this because of His love for them. All of these are marks of true friendship which we today still need to observe in order to have friends and to be a true friend. In fact, it is possible for us today to be a friend of Jesus. Hmmm?

Statues made of wood, decorated with gold was all they were. They were like "a scarecrow in a cucumber patch" unable to walk or talk. "Do not fear them." Today, Christians have enemies lurking in every corner. But still we must look behind these enemies at their power - false gods of greed, power, lust, position. Do not fear them! Fear the true and living God who still rules this universe.

Sacrificing God's Children

Despite God's commands and warnings, Israel and Judah were influenced by these surrounding nations and ended up doing the same thing. Through the recent actions of numerous elected officials in the United States today, it's become apparent that people are now willing to sacrifice children to a wide variety of "gods" to serve their own purposes. When the true God is a God of life who loves the children, we wonder how long He will withhold His hand from letting us know what He thinks about all of this killing of innocent children?

The Temple of God

Israel served God in a tabernacle in the wilderness, and later Solomon built a temple modeled after it. In the tabernacle were various furnishings: an incense altar, lampstand, table with showbread. Also the ark of the covenant was in the Holy of Holies. Outside was the altar for sacrifices. The priests ministered there daily. Paul asserts that the church is "the temple of the living God" today. The service and ministries of the church are quite striking in correspondence to those of the tabernacle. This is no coincidence, but by God's design.

God of Gentiles Also

Solomon wrote that there is a time for every purpose under heaven, both to weep and to laugh, to mourn and to dance. Life's pleasures are a gift from God.

The First Adam and the Last

Jesus is called the "last Adam" by Paul. What exactly does he mean by that? There are marvelous comparisons between Christ Jesus, the "last Adam," and the first Adam who was created by God. Not Ashamed

Immanuel means "God with us." Why did God have to become a human being? Well, both Jews (who had the Law) and Gentiles (who did not) had sinned and thus were guilty before God. Sin brings death so this situation left the entire human race in a hopeless mess. But God's plan for mankind's salvation (which was His eternal purpose and plan from the very beginning) was for Him in the person of Immanuel to overcome death by living a sinless life and offering Himself as the perfect sacrifice for sin. By man came sin and death, so by Man had to come perfect obedience and life.

Anything is Possible

Jesus and Lazarus

The account of Jesus' raising Lazarus from the dead in John 11 gives us great insights into the answers to many of these questions we have and serves to renew our faith in One called Jesus Christ.

No Greater Calling

Nobody's Perfect

Scripture plainly declares there are none righteous before God. Bible history even shows great men of faith - Abraham, Moses, David - to have great weaknesses and having committed grave sins. John the Baptist administered "a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins." Multitudes responded to his message and came and were baptized in the Jordan River confessing their sins. True Friendship

When creating marriage, God said that the two shall become one flesh. Both husband and wife have responsibilities which reflect those of Christ (husband) toward the church, and the church (wife) toward Christ. The model is perfect, but the two people coming together in the same space at the same time are both sinners and have many differences. This situation creates one of the greatest tests for the man and the woman as they work together to become "one flesh."

When Levi gave his reception for Jesus after accepting His call, his house was packed with every sort of person from tax collectors and known sinners to scribes. Jesus defended Levi's guest list by saying that it was the sick who needed made well. It was sinners who needed healed. The Purpose of Teaching

God is being pushed out of the public square, and people are isolating themselves in their political and religious enclaves, holed up behind their tablet and cell phone screens. The word of God plainly spells out that if people are to have the love based relationships we need so desperately that we must be totally open to God and to one another. What about you? He Anointed Me

Toward the beginning of His ministry Jesus had come to the synagogue in Nazareth and read from Isaiah 61 which told of the mission of the Messiah. The parable of the sower is familiar to most of us, but it will always yield "a crop" of understanding when we look into it again and take a closer look. We are advised to read our familiar scriptures even more carefully. This parable provides great insights into several aspects of the kingdom of God. The new community took their Lord seriously and went out with His message. But it didn't take long for them to receive opposition. The religious leaders of the Jewish establishment felt threatened by the power displayed in the healing of the lame beggar and the power of the message of a resurrected Jesus of Nazareth whom Peter says they crucified. So they threaten the apostles not to teach in the name of Jesus any more. This does nothing but empower the church with greater boldness to proclaim the message. for they knew that God was with them.

And despite our being adopted son, we get to share in the inheritance of the Father's only Begotten. Wow!

Joy Beyond Words

Joy in God's people is a theme throughout the Bible. They rejoiced that the Lord was their God and because of all His goodness toward them. It seems, though, that this joy in the Lord is lost on the church today. We are sober, solemn and somber, but are never full of rejoicing in our God and His Christ. No Free Lunch

Being a Neighbor

A lawyer asked Jesus about inheriting eternal life, and Jesus directed him to the scriptures. He identified the correct commands - those which had to do with loving God and one's neighbor. But this lawyer asked about who was his neighbor so that he might make himself look good by loving those particular people. Jesus masterfully turned the tables by telling the parable of the good Samaritan through which he revealed the four types of people in the world (yes, we're all there) and also revealed how the lawyer had asked the wrong question.

In removing the Aaronic priesthood of Moses, God ushered in a better covenant by a priesthood which would continue forever - Christ Jesus was ordained a priest after the order of Melchizedek. Under this new covenant, sins could be totally removed (forgiven) because the sacrifice was none other than Jesus Himself, the Lamb of God. Disciples of Jesus are privileged to serve as priests although they are not involved with sacrifices for sin. They offer up spiritual sacrifices of praise and good works to God.

We continue in this series with a brief look at the priesthood under the law of Moses. Aaron, Moses' brother, and his sons were chosen by the Lord to be priests and they underwent a seven-day consecration ritual to set them apart for God's holy service. The law was very specific about the duties of the priests and the various sacrifices which were to be offered. But the priesthood became corrupted along with the entire nation of Israel, and that situation coupled with the known weakness in the law (the animal sacrifices could not remove sins) moved God to bring about a change in the priesthood along with a change in the law.

Jesus was called a friend of sinners by his adversaries - and He truly was! The reason He became one of us was to give us comfort, peace and hope so He focused on the individual more than the situation that each was in. He "loved" the young ruler who had much wealth. He marveled at and praised the faith of a pagan centurion. He did not condemn the woman caught in adultery. He knew who we were and what we needed. His disciples needed to learn the same. God's people today also need to become friends of sinners.

Paul has no hesitation in affirming this group of believers as the church of God and that they were in Christ, had received the grace of God, were in fellowship with Jesus Christ and would be confirmed "blameless" to the day of Christ. Then he goes on in the bulk of the letter (1 Corinthians) to point out all of their failings and even immoral behavior! We have to ask: "What's with that?" There is a certain "tension" in all of this which needs to be unpacked.

What Did Jesus Look Like?

Over the years, people have painted and sculpted what they thought our Lord looked like, but the New Testament is silent on Jesus' physical appearance. Was He short? Tall? Of rugged build? All too often we make decisions or take positions with out really examining their logical consequences. Such is the case with atheism whose adherents often have chosen a non-belief in God to avoid having any restraints in their lifestyles (especially sexual) and to escape any end of time judgment (so they believe). However, atheism logically leads us to the following conclusions: We are worthless. Life is pointless. The future is hopeless. Are atheists ready to accept these outcomes? Many have tried to come up with a simplistic definition, but since faith is such a complex idea, finding a definition is difficult. A "picture" of faith is a better approach, and this is exactly what God through the author of Hebrews gives us in chapters nine and ten of the book. It's worth careful consideration to determine whether or not I have faith.

By What Authority

Jesus was asked by what authority He taught what He did, healed people, cast out demons, etc. It was a legitimate question. Authority seems to be something which is shoved into the background these days. People are bending the rules, breaking the rules, and even making up their own rules! How does that work? Scripture affirms that all (legitimate) authority rests with God. He created this planet and the people on it, so it's His right to write the rules. He designates who is to have authority and what the boundaries of that authority are to be. Christians need to exercise care that they have God's authority for whatever they do in life.

Fixer Upper

We've all seen the TV shows in which somebody buys a house on the market, goes in and extensively remodels it, and then resells it. We like to watch them break down walls, tear out old kitchens and re-purpose living space. We love to see the finished home. When a person becomes a Christian, a similar process takes place. Through the Holy Spirit, Jesus comes to dwell in that person. When He comes to take up residence, He begins the "remodeling" process. The old must go: sinful behavior, bad habits, erroneous thinking, etc. These are replaced with the new: righteous living, truthful thinking, loving deeds, etc. It can be painful, but the outcome is joy and peace - a beautiful life!

Not By Bread Alone

In His confrontation with Satan, Jesus quoted from Deuteronomy that man does not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. Now we like to eat and do a good job of providing "bread" for the body. How much do you eat in a week? How many times? It seems we are always going to the fridge or looking in the pantry for something to nibble on. So how well do we do with feeding our soul? How much of the "living bread" (Jesus) do we take in during the week to keep our soul healthy and fit for service? Hmmm?

I Will Make a Way

Israel was "up against it" when they came out of Egypt. Pharaoh's army was pursuing and the Red Sea was a barrier in front of them. They could not see a way out and began to cry out in fear. But the Lord had a plan (He always does), and He made a way thru the Sea for them to escape. The Lord still helps His people out of trouble today. He is God!! When we can't see any way out of our difficulty, God does, and He will make a way for us. We don't need to know how He's going to do it. We only need to know Him.

Jesus refers to Himself as the good shepherd in John 10, and He speaks there of some of the blessings for those who are shepherded by Him. David wrote in Psalm 23 of the blessings which came to him since the Lord was his shepherd in life. If a person were truly letting Jesus shepherd them, would not their life be characterized by the one which David describes in his psalm? Hmmm?

God's Family - Can I Get in on That?

The Gospel

The history in the Old Testament is filled with bad news. Adam and Eve sinned and were removed from the Garden. Man's wickedness was so great that God told Noah to build an ark. Despite being called as God's people and having a covenant relationship, Israel continued to go astray and ended up on the other side of captivity with a beggarly-looking temple and 400 years of silence out of God. But the New Testament opens with good news - the birth of a Savior. And the gospel marches from Bethlehem to Nazareth to Golgotha and to the ends of the earth. What is so marvelous about this "good news" and why must we keep it pure?

Change is Good - Yes? Maybe?

Show Me Your Glory

Glory is a word whose meaning derives from the idea of "weighty importance." Things which have glory have some kind of great importance. Moses asked God to show him His glory. Building Your Ark

Perhaps this is why too many Christians still don't "know."

These Things, #Deceivers

Another reason John wrote his first letter was to warn the church of the deceivers, the false prophets, who were in the world. The concept of what is truth and reality as opposed to what is falsehood and fantasy is at the core of the battle between good and evil. The devil is the master of lies and delusions who began to ply his trade in the Garden. John warns of the deceivers who are spreading their false messages. Today, John's warning is extremely relevant with so many false teachers and self-imagined prophets in the world. John reminds his readers of how to tell the difference between the true message and the false blustering.

These Things, #Not Sin

John wrote his first letter for four reasons. The second reason was that his readers would not sin. With his having asserted that forgiveness in Christ was freely available to them, this might seem a bit strange, but John lays out his case for not sinning. Sin puts a person in the devil's camp and works against the purposes of Christ. Sin harms our brothers and sisters when we fail to attend to their needs. Sin shows a disregard for the commandments of God whom we espouse to serve. Any sin can open the door to one's ultimate eternal destruction. To sin is a destructive thing for a Christian and runs counter to the love of God.

But Paul writes of unfathomable riches which are found in heavenly places. Do we see the richness of salvation, forgiveness of sins, the gift of the Holy Spirit, being adopted as God's sons and much more? Humanity, even Christians, need to learn God's value system so we can appreciate His gifts to us and tell others about the unsearchable riches of Christ.

The apostle Paul was very mindful of his past sins, wrote of them openly and considered himself the foremost of sinners. But he didn't dwell on those sins because he also remembered His Savior Jesus who showed him grace and mercy, and even gave him a special work to do in the kingdom. Christians need to remember their sins so as not to grow self-righteous and to be reminded of the great Savior who won their salvation on His cross. Road to Glory

He was destined to receive glory, but the road which led to His glory wound through three places - Gethsemane, Gabbatha and Golgotha. What's in a name? A great deal! Names evoke images and feelings because they bring to mind past experience. When someone mentions our favorite restaurant or beverage, certain thoughts, images, smells, tastes come to mind. In the Bible, we are taught that many things must be done "in the name of Jesus." This is because He has been given all authority, and using His name invokes that authority. So, salvation is in His name, prayer is to be in His name, believing is in His name, baptism is to be in His name. We could go on. The name of Christ Jesus is powerful because He has all authority.

He Who Overcomes

Sometimes we wonder (It's only human to do so) whether our sweat, sacrifice and tears for the way of Christ will be worth it. The Holy Spirit throughout scripture repeatedly gives the people of God assurance that the blessings of life eternal will far out weigh any troubles in this life. In Revelation 21:7 we find a three-fold promise made to the people of God who overcome the rigors of an evil world to spend eternity with their Lord. God has confounded the wise men of the world at every turn in the road. And He has certainly done this in the way He has chosen to save the human race - through a man dying on a cross! The Jew stumbles all over this idea - "Cursed!" he says. The Greek says it makes no sense - "Foolish!" But the Christ of God dying on a cross is the wisdom and power of God - so that no one may boast of anything before Him. Praise God!

Many people have a "bucket list" of things they want to accomplish before they die (or "kick the bucket"). These could range from traveling to some foreign country or famous city to seeing some natural wonder like the Grand Canyon or some man-made structure like the pyramids. This list is different because not only does it have to do with this life but also with the next.

In His last hours, Jesus prayed for unity of believers and said such unity would be a powerful witness to the world that God had sent Him. Often we speak of such unity in terms of having the same beliefs and practices as set forth in scripture. Although these are a must, Paul wrote of unity which was based on spiritual truths but expressed in another way - through humility with self-effacing concern for others. If we don't treat all of our brothers and sisters right, it doesn't matter if we have everything else right.

It is custom in various situations to stand up to honor an individual. In the military, when a senior officer enters a venue, the troops come to attention. We stand up at a wedding when the bride enters. Although God loves all people, some of His own have given Him special delight, and He honored them in various ways, often speaking about them personally or through a prophet. In one instance, it is recorded that Christ stood to recognize what one of His disciples was doing for His name. God appreciates devotion to Him, and He will reward on the final day.

He served His heavenly Father by listening only to Him and doing what He told Him to do, and He served all the people around Him by easing their burdens and teaching them the gospel. He calls His church to be servants just as He was. Being a servant is being like God.

The Word of God speaks a lot about being able to "see" properly. We tend to see what we are looking for. Some people look for the bad in others; some look for the good. Depending upon what we have been taught and upon our experiences, we tend to look for certain things. We have "trained" eyes which are connected to our hearts.
