An unexpected tragedy can break our spirit or awaken us to God's presence and power.
That's precisely what happened to Debra Stout after a Christmas morning house fire stripped her of everything she has held dear, including her career as a teacher. Rather than focusing on what she had lost, Debra held on to the fact that God miraculously spared her life. She became a believer in miracles and made it her mission to awaken others to the power of God's presence and work.
An author and speaker, Debra recently embraced the call to the Great Commission and has made several trips to Mexico with World Missions Alliance to share her story and her love for Christ. 
With a passport and funds initially out of reach, and only one month to prepare for her first mission, she trusted in divine provision. Through her experiences in Mexico she has discovered deep fulfillment and connected to her greater purpose in life.

What if you could take a leap of faith and set out on an adventure that profoundly affects not only you but also your family?

Having low self-esteem can take over your entire life. But perhaps the most difficult part of having low self-esteem is that it follows you even when you’re alone. 

 You may constantly feel inadequate and compare yourself negatively to others. There are a few main reasons behind low self-esteem, including the negative experiences we’ve had in childhood, but it’s made worse by the pervasive culture of comparison brought by social media and other aspects of modern life.

We can’t choose whether we’ll go through trials, experience crisis, or suffer from trauma. In fact, Jesus even told us that in this world, we will have trouble. 

 But Jesus also encouraged us by declaring that He has overcome this world, and so we can choose how to respond when we go through trials.

 In the last episode of the podcast, we heard the story of how Helen’s oldest son, Philip, was recently the victim of a violent crime. The event was sudden and unexpected, but the Lord had been preparing him for it, and He used it to strengthen Philip even more.

This week’s episode is part one of the two-part conversation with Leonora Maloku, a former Muslim from Kosovo. Having lived in Kosovo her whole life, Leonora distinctly remembers the Kosovo war of 1998, which started when she was only 11 years old. 

 The events of the war would drastically change Leonora’s life. When it ended in June of 1999, in despair and depression, she began her “battle with God”. In this episode, you will hear more about the war in Kosovo from the perspective of a young girl, who had to hide in the woods with her mom and sisters, and later discovered the tragic loss of her father.

Ultimately, this is a story of true hope with unexpected plot twists.

When you’re in a difficult season in life, it can be hard to recognize that God is still working in your life. Letting go of the pain and trauma can become a lifelong battle. It does not have to be, however.
This week, our host Helen Todd speaks with Tammarra Kirkland, an experienced social worker, an adjunct professor at Liberty University, and a missionary.

 As a child, Tammarra’s mother and stepfather were drug addicts, and her father was a drug-dealer. But amid all the crime and drugs, the real danger to Tammarra was growing up without feeling loved and cared for by her parents. As an adult, Tammarra fell into drug use, lived with unresolved trauma, and nearly joined Islam as a solution to her problems. But after a Christian co-worker encouraged her to attend church, Tammarra slowly began to pursue God and allow Him to heal her brokenness.

 After finding healing and calling in Christ, Tammarra spent 18 years helping the hurting people as a social worker for the State of New Jersey, and in our recent mission trip to Moldova, she was able to share her testimony of redemption from drugs with a group of men at a drug rehab facility. In this episode, you’ll hear more about Tammarra’s story and how God is using her to change the lives of others.

How much of the Old Testament tradition belongs in the New Testament faith? How does modern-day Judaism differ from Old Testament Judaism?

 This week, our host Helen Todd welcomes Israel Iluz, an Orthodox Jew who is now a pastor of a growing church in upper Galilee. Israel’s father was a Rabbi, and Israel was firmly devoted to the traditions of Orthodox Judaism until he was challenged to read the New Testament as an adult. As he read the New Testament, God revealed to Israel that Jesus is the Messiah that he has been praying for his whole life. This moment forever changed his life, his family relationships, and his understanding of who is a “true Jew”.

Many Christians seek out an opportunity to go on a mission trip because they love God and want to express this love by doing something for God. Or perhaps because they feel compassion for the people who are hurting and want to help. 

 However, there is so much more hidden in Christ’s call to the Great Commission. There are personal rewards that cannot be found unless we respond to this call.

 This week, our host Helen Todd talks with Scott Presley, a musician at the Presleys’ Country Jubliee and a Pastor at Freedom Fellowship Church in Branson, Missouri. The Presley name has been well known in Branson, Missouri since the Presley family had built Branson's first live music theater 55 years ago. With this family history, it’s natural that Scott pursued a career in entertainment business. Even though he accepted Christ at an early age and some family members mentioned that he could be a pastor, Scott never considered ministry because of his fear of public speaking. For a while, Scott’s faith took second place to his career. Because Sundays were his only day off, he was not able to attend church regularly. But in the summer of 2004, everything changed when him and his wife had a profound spiritual experience.

Marriage and healthy sexuality are under assault in our current culture. Sexuality is a subject that is not normally addressed in church and when it is, it is mostly about the “don’ts”. What we are not supposed to do is clear, but what is godly sexuality like?

Sometimes God has a calling on our lives that we don’t recognize and perhaps don’t want. In His infinite love God rearranges our lives to bring this calling to surface, make it very clear. Then we have a choice to accept or reject it.

In this episode our host Helen Todd interviews LeAnn Remmers who at a very early age discovered her talent for signing and dreamt of a career as a singer. She had a promising start with the opportunities to pursue record labels and to go on tours. But at 19 years old, she found out that she had vocal damage that would require surgery and at least a year without singing, which could end her musical career. It seemed like her dream was gone and the pain of losing it caused her to drift away from God.

In John 16, verse 33, Jesus reminds us that we will have trouble in this world, but He encourages us to take heart because He has overcome the world. Sometimes troubles become even deeper after we accept Christ.

Tony was raised in church but dealt with anger and bitterness after losing both of his parents at a young age. But after deciding to return to church as an adult in a rocky marriage, he was encountered by God and baptized in the Holy Spirit. His trials wouldn’t end there but would only get worse. Just before being sent to Iraq in the special forces after 9/11, Tony lost his job, his wife filed for divorce, and he was homeless for a period. Learning how to deal with adversity and heal from bitterness and anger Tony discovered a practice that transformed his life. Losing a loved one can change our relationship with our friends and family, and sometimes it can even change our relationship with God.

Danita has suffered loss, has dealt with autoimmune disorders and chronic sleep deprivation, and has carried the stress of constant relocation while her husband served in the military. Shortly after they moved to Colorado, Danita’s husband, a lieutenant colonel in the US Air Force, was found dead while on a hiking trip in the mountains.  Danita became a widow with 2 young daughters. Yoga, an activity that many of us learn at the gym or at home, can be a great way to stretch and relax. But its deeply spiritual roots can lead people on a dark road to deception, idol worship, and even demonic torment.

Sunny threw herself into the yoga culture as a student, and even went to a yoga retreat in Columbia, trying to fill a hole in her life. When Jesus was asked who is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven, he said that “unless you become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven”. In another chapter, He says that “the greatest among you must be a servant to all”...  and in Matthew 20: 16 Jesus says So the last will be first, and the first will be last. This is what our host, Helen Todd, calls the “upside down nature of the Kingdom of God “.

Todd has also counseled two presidents, President Ronald Reagan and President Gerald Ford. President Reagan was also featured on one of Todd’s television specials.

For more than 50 years, we have witnessed unrest in the Middle East as people of many different nationalities and ideologies have attempted to take Israel away from the Jewish people. But our guest on this episode, Tass Abu Saada, has a unique and important perspective on this struggle.

How does God work in our brokenness and pain? How can we guard ourselves from false teachers who pose as ministers of Christ?

In pursuit of a deeper relationship with God, this week’s guest Kellie Smith and her husband John became involved in a seemingly passionate and deep-reaching ministry. Shortly after John and Kellie were told to cut ties with friends and family not to corrupt the process of getting closer to God.

 It took years, but through the Holy Spirit, Kellie and John’s eyes eventually opened to the fact that they were being exploited by a cult. Even after they left, the healing process took many years and left a deep impact on Kellie and her family. In this interview, Helen and Kellie discuss the importance of understanding the difference between religion and relationship, establishing a solid Biblical foundation for your faith and having a healthy view of your identity in Christ.

In times of crisis, it’s often passionate and fearless volunteers who provide the necessary aid. The Afghan Rescue Crew, a private group of dedicated American Veterans and civilians, are currently fighting to offer that necessary aid in Afghanistan.
