Stage Fright! Tips And Tricks In Dealing With It

My Dream Wedding (I Sing For My Husband!)

In this episode, Anya, our design and marketing expert, discuss with Hanna, our principal, about singing for one's wedding.

Just over half a year ago, Hanna had her wedding in Seoul where she walked down the aisle and performed a beautiful rendition of "The Prayer" with the help of a friend. Anya flew over to attend the wedding as well and was describing her side of the story.

They agree that singing for one's wedding is a powerful way of making their wedding their own, and therefore Hanna shares from her experience some essential tips about singing for one's wedding.

First - song choice and arrangement is critical. If the song is too difficult, it would be challenging to perform well on the day itself as it would be absolutely nerve-wracking for the bride. So it is about choosing songs that you're comfortable with and in comfortable keys.

Second - Hanna shares a few songs that are fitting and appropriate for different types of ladies. For the sweeter ones, a good song would be Marie Digby's Your Love. If you're more into a calmer mood, a good song would be Ellie Goulding's How Long Would I Love You. And the last recommendation is for the people who are more musical-like. The song is Two Words which Lea Salonga sang for her wedding and took the wedding world by storm.

Hanna then goes on to share about how to plan for the logistics of the wedding to ensure that you can keep it a secret (this is a masterful plan!!!!) and what you need to watch out for.

Tips For The Beginner Student (Basic Vocal Warm-Ups And Technique)

Hanna, our principal, and Bojana, our senior coach, discuss the journey of a beginner student - what defines a beginner student and how they identify one, and how to build up one's voice from there.

Everyone can sing, but what defines a beginner is about the technical understanding one has about their vocals, and their ability to create a stable, whole tone when they sing. The most common issue in beginners is their inability to sustain a note comfortably, causing it to waver and wane. Also, it is about the consistency of the tone as one goes through their range - some singers can sing high notes, but are unable to maintain their tone when they hit the lower notes.

In conclusion, it all boils down to the breathing of the person. Diaphragmatic, or also known as belly breathing, is the most fundamental aspect of developing one's voice. And in this episode, Hanna and Bojana spend some time describing and sharing some essential warm-up and breathing techniques that would help beginner students.

Hanna spends some time explaining and describing how the diaphragmatic breathing works and how one can tell they are achieving it. Furthermore, the two talk about how breathing is a part of one's everyday consciousness of one's breathing outside of singing. It is all about consistently developing one's strength and awareness of how we breathe.

Bojana also goes on to share some of the advanced warm-up techniques. These techniques, when tried at home, are useful to assess whether one has already reached a more advanced level of singing in terms of breathing techniques.

The Male Register - Do You Have To Keep Singing High Notes?

In the first episode of The Vocal Studio Singapore's podcast, Find Your Inner Voice, Ethan and vocal coach Josse Chema talk about whether we need to sing high notes to be good, as well as how to find and expand your register.

We begin the conversation with whether high notes are "money notes" when it comes to singing, and where it originates. Josse talks about his experience from Latin music, where people male singers sing high notes such that the female audience can sing along with the music, and how the high notes do often get the crowd going.

We then listen to Ed Sheeran, where his voice shines with the stylistics of a singer-songwriter type of music. And then we talk about Frank Sinatra, whose voice is naturally at the baritone range.

The biggest takeaways in this podcast were about finding the stylistic that fits the voice register that you sing at, and how to sing higher notes. For Josse, it was singing 7 hours a day, four days a week to expand his vocal range from a mid to high tenor such that he can hit all the top notes in the music.
