In English, we use exclamation points to emphasize a point or convey urgency. In Hebrew they use repetition. Several times in Scripture a word or phrase is repeated to indicate it's importance; but only once is a word used three times - and that's to tell us God is Holy, Holy, Holy. God's holiness is not just one of His attributes, it's Who He is! His holiness effects every single characteristic of Him. Have you ever done something pretty terrific and someone else gets the credit for it? It can frustrate us, and even sometimes make us mad. Many authors of beloved and beautiful hymns did not always have an easy life, nor did they always have a happy ending to their life here on earth. Famed hymn writer, Phillip P. Bliss was no exception. After struggling for years, Bliss finally seemed to have it all - a wife he adored, two healthy sons, notoriety as a singer, musician, and song writer, and a life dedicated to mission and evangelizing for God. We are saved by faith alone, in Christ alone, through grace alone. That is a certainty. We are not saved by any works we do. However, the works we do after we are saved are part of our progressive sanctification and do have eternal consequences. In fact, we will be judged on how faithful we serve the Lord and will be given rewards accordingly. To quote Derrick Thomas, "Some will be given ten cities, some will be given five cities, and some will just be given Orlando." What rewards are you getting?

As we’ve seen, the roots of the Reformation go back to the 3rd century! Probably nowhere else was the Reformation ushered in for a more bizarre reason than in England! King Henry VIII, a staunch Catholic, was refused an annulment by the Pope for his first marriage. With the Reformation under way, King Henry broke from the Catholic church, established the Church of England, made himself head of it, and granted his own annulment. What ensued after was court intrigue, deception, mass murder, and finally compromise as the church in England tried to establish where it would stand amongst the protestant and catholic church.

In the military, the term, “Fall in Line,” means to submit to the rules of a higher authority, to obey, to conform, to agree on a position. In his first letter, Peter tells Christians that we need to “fall in line,” when it comes to dealing with our brothers and sisters in Christ and with our enemies. 

Peter also gives us in this letter, one of the more complex verses in Scripture. So complex, that there are a few different interpretation of it - even within Reformed Circles!

     Before salvation, we are enemies of God. We are sinful; haters of God, who have no ability to understand God or His ways. We are dead, and we are worthless. Our every intention is evil because it is not grounded in God. This is what “total depravity” means. But, when God saves us, all of that immediately changes. He gives us a complete positional change.  We are not just chosen and saved by God, we are adopted by God – we are His son or daughter with all of the rights that any natural born child would have. 
       When we were saved, God did not just change our soul or our heart. We are a new creation – from head to toe! He even tells us we are born again of God. So it follows that our Christianity is all-consuming. It should affect every single aspect of our life.

We used a quote by boxer, Mike Tyson, as the title of this episode because who hasn't felt like they've been punched in the face?  Who could forget how well things seemed to be going just 4 short years ago in 2019; and then, BAM, 2020 hit! And, along with it so much mayhem, lies, corruption, and fear that we all felt like we were punched in the face! And how about on a personal level? Who of us hasn't been punched by the sudden and unexpected loss of someone we love? Maybe we’ve been diagnosed with a terminal illness – or someone in our family has been. Maybe our finances took a drastic turn and we suddenly find ourselves in a perilous place wondering how we are going to pay our bills, afford a place to live, or even buy food. The question isn't if we will be punched in the face, the question is how will we respond?!

In this episode, we delve into the book of Zechariah - the major, minor prophet. While Haggai's prophecy was primarily to Zerubbabel and Joshua, his contemporary, Zeccariah's prophecy is for all the Israelites. God sends Zechariah to His people to give them encouragement to finish the work God has given them to do, and hope in the promises God has made to them.

You may wonder what this Old Testament Prophet  has to say to us today. While his words were directed to the Israelites at that time, the book actually has a lot to say to us today! Human nature hasn't changed since creation. People of Zechariah's time  struggled with the many of same problems we do, and they handled them in  much the same ways we do. No matter where you are in life, or what you’re relationship with God is like (even if you don’t have one) the book of Zechariah has something to say to you!

We begin looking at the exilic minor prophets beginning with Haggai. When Haggai arrives in Jerusalem, the Temple was still in ruins and had not been worked on for 17 years! Facing opposition, the Israelites decided they would stop working on rebuilding the Temple and instead, get their own houses built, their fields planted, and make themselves and their families comfortable.  The Israelites neglect of the Temple and their desire to live in peace with everyone and in comfort, is more about their relationship with God than it is about a building. And God has something to say about it! Join us as we delve into the book of Haggai.

When you read all of the prophetic books together, it can seem like God is saying much of the same things over and over. But that should be a great encouragement to us! God does not change! What He rebuked and reprimanded His people about in Joel are the same things He rebukes and reprimands His people about in Malachi! We don't have to wonder what God wants from us or if He will accept us - He's written it all down for us! And that includes how we can know how we will fare on the Day of the Lord!

In the book of Jonah, God calls Jonah to preach judgement on the capital city of Assyria, Nineveh, and call them to repentance. When he does, the entire city - from the live stock all the way up to the king - repents and asks God for forgiveness.  God does forgive them and relents of the disaster He was going to bring upon them. The book of Nahum is the sequel to the book of Jonah. In it, we see that Nineveh's - and the whole county of Assyria's - repentance was short-lived. Just 14 years later, they are doing unspeakable evil against Israel and Judah. Nahum comforts the southern nation of Judah that God will have vengeance on their enemies! And the same is true for us!

In the minor prophetic book of Micah, we get more indictments and judgments against the nations of Israel and Judah. God also has some harsh words for those who lead His people astray with false teaching. Warnings that false teachers today should heed! But our gracious Father doesn't leave His people with no hope. Micah is given restoration promises - promises that point to both Jesus' First Coming and His Second Coming. Most of know the story of Jonah, but maybe there's a lot that we missed! And maybe the parts we missed are the most significant parts of the book. The book of Jonah is so much more than a book about a guy running from God who gets thrown into the sea, swallowed by a big fish, was saved by God, and then learns his lesson that you can't run from God. In the book of Amos, Amos spends over a chapter prophesying to the northern nation of Israel that God is going to bring judgement on their enemies - even their brother enemy, the southern nation of Judah. And you can imagine how psyched the Israelites were about that! We can imagine them high-fiving each other and breaking out the champagne. But they better hold that champagne because Amos has over 7 chapters of prophecy about God's judgement on THEM! And Amos has something to say to us, too!

By the time the 1500's rolled around, the church was corrupt and its theology was rotten to the core. But a group of men, spurred on by Martin Luther taking on the Catholic Church, recaptured sola Scriptura and began the Reformation. One of the great voices to come out of the Reformation was John Calvin. As one of his contemporaries said, "(John Calvin) was the greatest light there was in this world for the direction of the church of God.”  And that could still be said of him today. But not everyone felt this way. He had a lot of enemies to contend with during his time and those enemies continue today. People are addicted to love! Romance movies, books, and t.v. shows are widely popular.  The problem is, there are so many views and definitions of what love actually is, that it creates a lot of confusion.  We are at chapter 13 in 1 Corinthians - the "Love Chapter." 

We've all been to at least one wedding where parts of this chapter were quoted. Even besides weddings, we see portions or all of 1 Cor. 13 quoted and splattered all over on artwork, needlework, social media accounts, even billboards. It's been called the most beloved passages in all of Scripture. Even some unbelievers say that the Bible got it right with this chapter.

They are singularly focused on winning first prize. That's why there is a first prize! It's for the best of the best! Paul and Scripture would agree with this. In our Christian race, we aren't called to hang in the middle pack with the big pack of  average athletes, and we certainly aren't called to be at the back of the back dawdling, taking in the view, and stopping to rest! Whether we are a rookie Christian or a veteran, we have been given Christian liberties. The Bible gives us freedoms in many peripheral issues like smoking, drinking, getting a tatoo, playing video games, listening to secular music, etc. But some Christians will argue these aren't peripheral issues at all, but absolutes. 

Paul has a lot to say about this issue in 1 Corinthians chapter 8. If we are free to do certain things, does that mean we always should or even ever should? If a weaker brother or sister feels like we are making them stumble, do they have the right to demand we cease and desist our behavior?  Where does consideration for the weaker brother or sister become tyranny by the weaker brother or sister?

God often had Old Testament Prophets do difficult, and even bizarre, things. And nowhere do we see that more than with the Prophet Ezekiel. In this episode, we delve into a very odd passage where God tells Ezekiel to tell the exiles of Judah in Babylon about the forthcoming siege of Jerusalem and the dire consequences the people will face, by first, performing dramatic theater for the people, then by lying on the ground on either of his sides while tied up in ropes, and then by drinking a small amount of water, and baking an unusual cake of bread over human excrement!  

Why would God have Ezekiel do these things and use such bizarre methods to give the people His message? What does this passage tell us about prophets? What does this passage have to do with us today? And finally, why is this passage in the Bible?!

Did you ever really want something and then you got it only to realize you may have been better off without it? In this episode of "Why is THAT in the Bible?!" we look at a passage in 2 Kings where God tells King Hezekiah, who is very sick, that he is going to die. Hezekiah prays and asks God to let him live. God relents and gives Hezekiah 15 more years of life. As we read on, those 15 years were not good to the  godly King Hezekiah. 

This passage raises many questions: Why did God allow Hezekiah 15 more years of life when Scripture says God has each of our days numbered? Did God contradict His own Word by doing it? Why did Hezekiah sin like he did after God just gave him this miracle? Since God was always going to use Babylon to punish His people, did God make Hezekiah sin to entice Babylon? Does God ever lead us into sin as part of His plan and purpose? And a huge question that has been the topic of many hot debates,  since God is completely Sovereign, does that mean we don't really have any free will? Are we just robots programmed by God?

Understanding Jesus’ parables isn’t always easy at first glance. Even the Apostles struggled with them. But we shouldn’t shy away from them, we should wrestle with them and figure them out. In this episode we look at an odd event that is recounted in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Jesus comes across a demoniac (a man possessed by demons). In fact, he (and another man) are possessed by so many demons, the demons call themselves "Legion." Upon Jesus' arrival, the demons beg Jesus not to send them into the Abyss, but instead to let them go into a large herd of pigs nearby. Jesus gives them permission, and they immediately drown the pigs. The townspeople instead of rejoicing that the suffering man is not free from demon possession, or that they just witnessed a miracle, beg Jesus to leave their town.

Why does Jesus allow the demons to go into the pigs? Why do the demons kill the pigs? Why do the townspeople want Jesus to leave? Is demon possession possible today? Why is this passage in the Bible? Tune in for answers!

For sure one of the odder passages in Scripture is found Genesis 18 where Jesus, while paying Abraham a visit, tells him that the angels that had accompanied Him and have just left were heading to Sodom because God was about to destroy the whole city for their gross sin. What follows is an exchange between Jesus and Abraham where it seems like Jesus is willing to barter and possibly change His plans for Sodom to appease Abraham.   

This passage causes us to ask several questions such as why does Jesus engage in a back and forth with Abraham and not just put him in his place like He does to Job? But since He does engage in a back and forth with him, does that mean that God can, under certain circumstances, change His mind? Is God ever willing to change His plan if we ask Him to? Is it ever appropriate to barter with God? Is God ever willing to bend to our will? And of course, there is the question of why is this passage in the Bible?

There are varying beliefs and practices within the movement because there is no overarching guiding principles or doctrine. But one thing all of them agree on is the belief that in order to keep your salvation (and in some cases, obtain it) you need to keep Mosaic Law. Jesus did not come to fulfill the Old Testament Law, He came to renew all 613 laws of the Torah and we must keep them all in order to be a real Christian. But what does Scripture say? This interview will change you! Much of what we discuss is not easy to hear, but as Kelly says, "We, as ProLifers, need to arm ourselves with the truth." In Protecting Our Own, we delve into one of the most famous (or infamous, depending on how you view it) passages in all of Scripture - Ephesians 5:22 - 33. Paul's directive to Christian wives to submit to their husbands, and to Christian husbands to love their wives as Christ loves the church. It’s both famous and sadly, infamous, because of the misunderstanding surrounding it. For some, it’s a mandatory reading at their wedding, for others, it’s a “you better not dare read it or quote it to me” passage. And there are a lot of articles, blogs, opinions, and commentary on this Eph. 5 passage. And it can get really confusing reading them all. So we are going to try and sort it out by showing why some have an issue with it, the wrong ways it’s been interpreted, and then looking at it correctly in context – within the context of the original audience, within the context of the whole chapter and the whole letter to the Ephesians, and within the context of other Scripture. And we will pull in some commentary from some very credible and sound Biblical theologians. There is so much to delve into in these verses, we need two episodes to do it! People often say that cursing is not a sin so long as you don't use God's name in vain. They are just words, and wouldn't even be considered curses at different times in history and in different cultures. Some rationalize that even if you say "darn," God knows what you are really thinking, so be true to yourself and don't lie to God and say what you're thinking. But what does the Bible say about it? And how about drinking?  Is it okay for Christians to drink so long as they don't get drunk?

Education is great when it’s coupled with knowledge of the Gospel – the truth that we are all sinners in need of being saved from the wrath of our perfectly holy Creator. But when education is coupled with hardness of heart instead of that knowledge, you’ve got nothing. All the education in the world is useless in keeping you from burning in hell. Without salvation, we are just educated fools.

In the latter part of chapter 4 of Ephesians, Paul is trying to keep us from being "educated fools." He is showing us and telling us what we need to know and how we should live in light of being children of God. Paul teaches us truths about maintaining the unity we already have because we believers, about teaching and correcting each other’s doctrine and theology, and  speaking the truth to each other lovingly, so that we all grow into mature Christians – something that should be the goal of every Christian.

We have reached chapter 4 of the Book of Ephesians which begins the second part of it - the imperatives – what we’re told to do in light of the fact that we’re God’s children and all He has done for us.  This indicative/imperative thing flips on its head what most people think about the Bible – and even Christianity. And it’s what makes Christianity a totally different religion than any of the false religions out there. Most (if not all) religions are about doing. 

Given the quickly changing world we live in, we could very soon find ourselves in a foxhole with our brothers and sisters in Christ. We may even find ourselves face to face with evil. In light of who we are in Christ, how does God command us to react and behave? Join us as we find out together!

A good mystery is not one you have figured out 15 minutes into the movie, t.v. show, or book. A good mystery is not too simplistic. It's answer is multi-layered and unfolds as the story goes on. It makes our brain do some work – it is  deeper and more complex than it first appears. Maybe we even need to get some back story to fully understand.  If you like these kind of mysteries, Paul has a great one for us in Ephes. 3:1 - 13. The Jewish Christians and Gentile Christians were fighting over the Gentile Christians not getting circumcised before being accepted into the church. Paul saw that there was a lot more going on than what it appears. He understands there is a heart issue that needs to be resolved. And he resolves it by revealing the mystery that was not known to past generations, but has been made known  to Paul and the other Apostles. We are born with a fatal spiritual problem. And that problem  doesn’t just leave us sick and in need of a little medical care. Nor are we given a little island of grace in us that’s good and can help draw us to God. Neither of these beliefs are backed up by Scripture. What Scripture does say is that, "God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. " How can we have already been raised up with Christ and are seated with him in the heavenly places when we are still here on earth?? Everything we have looked at in the past 7 episodes of our series, Be Transformed, are connected. In this episode, our transformation takes a slightly different turn, but it's no less connected. In this episode, we look at being transformed to call out evil as evil. The world is changing rapidly. So many things that are evil are being touted as good, while true good is being denounced as evil. And this is true even in some of our churches! Christians need to have the courage and wisdom to call evil out, stand firm in Biblical Truth, while continuing to glorify God. It seems an impossible task, but Jesus tells us it is possible, but we need to be prepared. There are so many reasons people give for not being a part of a local church -   I can get better preaching from a podcast. I can worship on my own. I can study the Bible on my own. I have Christian friends that are my “church.” I have to work on Sundays. I have family obligations on the weekends. I feel like church is boring. I don’t feel like there’s a place for my child or teen. I don’t know where there’s a good church near me. I’m not sure I have the same beliefs I used to. I don’t agree with my church’s stance on sexuality. I’ve had my feelings hurt by church members. The people at my old church are hypocrites. I don’t feel like there’s a place for me to serve.

God’s greatness is that He is the Almighty, Sovereign Creator, Master, and Sustainer of the entire universe. In comparison to God’s greatness, we are small and insignificant – a fact that we need to grasp to have a proper view of God and give Him His due glory. However, along with being great, God is also good. His goodness is manifested in His care, concern, protection, grace, and mercy towards His children. When you really think about it, it is mind blowing that considering God’s greatness, He is personally involved in every minute of His children’s lives, and He is good to us all. This time of year many Christians make New Year’s resolutions that often include spiritual disciplines like reading our Bibles every day, praying more, or sinning less. And perhaps, the biggest resolutions many Christians make is that they want have more faith.

And regardless of having the best intentions most of us at some point have ended up dropping the ball on those resolutions sometimes when we’re not even too far into the new year. When it comes to having the desire to read our Bible more, pray more, sin less, and especially, have more faith, we can't approach it as a check list of things we need to do. Its all about what we do. It's not about us "upping" our game.

RC Sproul said everything begins and ends with our view of God. So the way we do pray more, sin less, increase our faith, isn’t by striving in our strength, but by upping the object of those things. We need to elevate our view of God. We need to see Him as He truly is.

With a new year comes new year's resolutions! So many make resolutions that involve a change in their lives. But true change or transformation can only come with hard work and consistency.  Whether you want to be a premier athlete or just get healthy, a real commitment is required. The same is true with our growth as a Christian. We may not aspire to become a brilliant theologian, but if we are truly saved, there should be a hunger in us to get to know the God who saved us. Truly understanding our salvation, all that it cost, and what is expected of us now that we are a child of God is exactly what matures us as a Christian. It is what keeps us from being rocked when a crisis arises, it’s what keeps us from being mislead by false teachers, its what makes us able to witness an accurate and complete Gospel message to others, and its what makes us more and more resemble Jesus – the very goal of sanctification.

In this episode, we look at the parables of Jesus. Every one of Jesus' parables is about the Kingdom of God. They teach us different Truths about the Kingdom of God and what it means to be a citizen of the Kingdom. Additionally, the parables are meant to divide. While the entire theme of the Bible is God’s Redemptive plan for His people, there is a sub theme of division – the divide between the godly line and the ungodly line – the people who belong to God and the people who do not. We see it beginning in Genesis with the division between Cain and Seth and it continues all the way through all 66 books until Revelation with the division of the wicked and the righteous. The parables are part of that. The parables that Jesus told are meant to be understood by those who belong to God, but their meaning is hidden, even seeming foolish to those who do not belong to God. That’s what Jesus meant when He quoted Isaiah which said, “‘they may indeed see but not perceive, and may indeed hear but not understand, lest they should turn and be forgiven.’”  Join us as we delve into what Jesus' parables teach us about the Kingdom of God and what they tell us about Jesus!

God’s sovereignty is one of the most important theological truths to be grasped. Understanding and trusting in His sovereign control of the world makes all the difference in how we view and how we live our lives.  Even if we can’t understand how it works completely; it is what the Bible teaches! When we began the book of Daniel, we stressed how God is working out His plan and is totally in charge of all nations and their rulers, as well as every molecule in the universe.

We see this in a big way in this episode, Stuck in the Middle. Chapter 11 of the book of Daniel is so unusually detailed, and the historical record lined up so incredibly with the prophecy, that some have tried to say that it couldn’t possibly have been written by Daniel about events still future to him. There are people who always want to know the future? Most people would like nothing more than to have a magic 8 ball to consult whenever they want to know what’s in store for them. This is why books on Revelation or other Biblical prophecy that make specific predictions usually become best sellers. Some of them even assign exact dates to events they say are going to take place.  But the imagery in apocalyptic literature is used to both conceal and reveal. And while the original audience would have understood all of the imagery, sometimes we can’t define some symbols definitively, and we need to be okay with that and just trust God.  We saw this in the differing views on the beasts from chapter 7. Sometimes, apocalyptic texts in Scripture are so complex, they can make our head hurt! Such is the case with Daniel 9. In fact, chapter 9 of the Book of Daniel has been called the most difficult and most debated chapter in the entire Old Testament.  So you may want to pop a couple of Tylenol before diving into this with us!

We have all probably had dreams that were so disturbing that we have woken up suddenly with our hearts pounding and maybe even in a sweat.  We take a deep breath, relieved and thankful when we realize that it was just a dream.  It may take a while to get the disturbing images out of our mind, but eventually, our minds quiet and we go back to sleep.  Imagine one of those nights; only when you wake up, you realize that what you had was not a dream, but a vision given to you by God that was of things to come.  

To say that would be disturbing is an understatement!  How would you respond?  Would you tell anyone?  Would you keep badgering God for more information?  Would you ask Him to stop showing you these things because they are upsetting?  Do you think you could handle the responsibility of presenting these visions to the people without injecting your own opinion or thoughts?

In this episode, we tackle another very familiar story in Scripture - Daniel in the Lion's Den. This story has been retold so many times and in so many "cutesy" ways that it has become more fairy tale than theology! But this is way more than a story of how God saved Daniel from getting eaten by lions. 

Daniel chapter 6 shows us that politics matter. They mattered for Daniel and the rest of the Jews at that time, and they matter for us now.  Many Christian brothers and sisters all over the world face persecution and discrimination every day. For us in the United States, it is a very new concept. A year and a half ago we would never have believed that the government would recommend closing our church doors to flatten the curve of a virus spread. What happens if they decide they want to do that again, for as long as they want to. What if they require vaccine passports to go to church? What if they decide you always have to wear a mask and can never sing in church? We would never have believed that in Canada people would be arrested and churches would lose their property because of government laws telling them they could not meet. Are we prepared to meet the obstacles and persecution that may be coming our way?

We've titled this episode “Going Down in a Blaze of Glory” – a term used to describe a final action done in an extraordinary and impressive manner. King Belshazzar of Babylon tried to do just this when he threw a lavish banquet while the Persian - Mede empire was on his doorstep about to overthrow Babylon. But instead of going down in a blaze of glory, he pees his pants when he receives a dire message scrolled on the wall by a bodiless hand. 
Daniel Chapter 5 shows us the emptiness and futility of life without God. It’s an important lesson for everyone. It is something every person needs to learn! Almost every day we wake up to at least one news story of someone famous, rich, or powerful who’s been humbled and brought down off of their lofty perch because of sin. Have you ever been so moved by something that you knew it changed your life only to discover a few weeks, or maybe only days, later, you are right back to where you were before?  Maybe some of us know someone who promises they will change, and maybe they do for a short time, but before too long they are right back to engaging in the same destructive behavior.     

On the flip side, maybe we, or someone we know always seems poised no matter what their circumstances. They always have a sense of peace about them no matter how tumultuous life is. These kind of people usually illicit questions from others like, “Why can’t I be like that?  How can I make myself trust God more?”

In this episode, we delve into a very familiar story from the Book of Daniel - Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refusing to bow down to King Nebuchadnezzar's gold statue; and for their disobedience, they are thrown into a fiery furnace. This narrative can be so familiar to us, that it ends up on the same level as Cinderella, instead of actual history. We can also think of it just as a sweet Sunday School story and miss the rich theology contained in the narrative.

King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon had a troubling dream that kept him awake. As most of us know, eating those royal treats will do that sometimes! But this dream was from God; not a late-night snack, (although God could have used a snack as one of the means to him having a dream!) The wise men and enchanters of the country have a problem. King Nebuchadnezzar wants someone to tell him not only what the dream means, but he wants the person to tell him what the dream was in the first place.

Sound like a nightmare? It was! When his wise men fail, he orders all of them, including Daniel and his friends killed. With the threat of death hanging over all their heads, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego calmly and confidently pray for God to show Daniel the dream and give him the interpretation - and what a crazy dream it was!

Does this Scripture show us that just as God gave dreams, visions, and interpretations to some in the Old Testament, He will do the same for us? Tune in and find out!

Who hasn't played the Blame Game? After all, nobody wants to get into trouble or get caught doing something they aren't supposed to be doing! And certainly none of us ever wants to be proven wrong! Even if we can't completely exonerate ourselves, casting off some of the blame onto someone else can help spread the muck around so it doesn't all fall onto our heads!

         No, this episode is not about women secret agents. It is about a subject that is gaining more and more attention in Christian circles and that’s should Christian women be required to wear head coverings in church, and maybe even all the time.  Some proponents say, using 1 Corinthians 11 that Paul says women should wear head coverings as a sign of submission.

          There’s a lot of debate about it – does 1 Corinthians 11 prescribe this as a practice for Christian women today at all, or was this a cultural thing for the Corinthian church of that day?  This is really a complex issue and encompasses so many things. Who of us hasn't had to deal with jealousy before? Whether it's that we are envious of something someone else has that we don't, or that we don't want someone else to have something we don't have, or maybe we don't want someone to be happier than us - we've all been there! Most of us know envy is sinful, but how do we get rid of it. Do we console ourselves with the fact that someone else's life is not as good as it appears? Do we remind ourselves there are many less fortunate than ourselves? Do we make a list of things we are grateful for? There are some people of the Bible that we all love and consider heroes of the faith: Joseph, David, and Daniel to name a few. And then there are the ones that have us scratching our heads wondering what God was thinking choosing them! Samson would certainly fit into this category. A womanizing, egotistical, narcissistic, arrogant, hot head is not who we want to
picture God choosing as the leader of His people. Why did God chose Samson? What can we learn from him?

As we move on in the book of Judges, the nation of Israel, and the Judges are getting worse. In this episode, we look at Abimelech. Abimelech is Gideon's son by his concubine. He self-appoints himself as leader of Israel by staging a coup, and violently killing 69 of his brothers who were ahead of him as heirs! He enlists the help of his shady relatives. But as usually happens with the wicked, their sinfulness and corruption prove to be their undoing.

Is Christians living amongst unbelievers a problem, possibility, or both? These things going on around us that probably makes most of us sick, if not angry, yet this is what is going on in our midst, in the society we are a part of. This isn’t far from what the Israelites were facing. They had pagans living all around them engaging in behavior that was in direct contrast to how they were told to live by God. If we aren’t careful, we could end up assimilating to the unbelieving world around us, just like the Israelites did. Judges 3:7 says, “And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. They forgot the Lord their God and served the Baals and the Asheroth.
