In this podcast, I breakdown my three P's of what it takes to create and build the momentum each of us needs to see our goals achieved. Setting goals is easy, but achieving them is not. Goals are meant to be hard and are meant to push us out of our comfort zone. Knowing your purpose is the first key and then making sure you are planning for the time (and discipline) you will need to achieve success. The third is creating a process that leads to continual progress toward your goal.

5 Goals to Transitioning in the Workforce:

Transitioning in the workforce, be it Law Enforcement or civilian world is tough. You need to be prepared when making that transition. With these 5 tips from Retired Captain Buddy Dodson (from the Columbia Police Department), he expresses how they helped him in transitioning to work after police retirement.

1. Know where you’re going! (This includes hard research and soft research on the job/position you are taking).

2. Do a self assessment and be honest with your assessment.

3. Have a check 6’r or a mentor (Try and stay away from family as their advice could be biased and/or skewed).

4. Be prepared to operate in the uncomfortable zone for a little while (also be prepared to transition properly from the panic and uncomfortable back to the comfortable zone). You can easily make this transition with education and experience as your guide!

5. Last but NOT least ... Make a 30, 60, 90 day calendar of your expectations and goals. Once the 90 day calendar is complete, transition that to a 180 day calendar. This will help you be transparent with your successes and failures in order to make a plan to address them properly!

It’s every law enforcement officer’s concern AND it’s every law enforcement family’s worst nightmare – the dreaded call from your family member’s department informing you that your father, son, mother, daughter, or spouse has been shot in the line of duty. Your first questions are: Will they live? Where are you taking them? Then, if, and after, the initial trauma of the incident wears off, you are concerned for your family member’s emotional, mental, and physical well-being.

This episode starts a 3-part series interviewing a man who not only survived such an incident, but has learned to thrive with the life-changing complications it brought. Dean first met Sgt. Michael Walker in the summer of 2018 at an FBI-LEEDA training. It was less than nine months since the incident. As they got to talking during a break, Dean learned of Sgt. Walker’s remarkable story of being shot in the face, surviving multiple surgeries, and adapting to his new reality. And as if that wasn’t a badge of honor in and of itself, he returned to his position at the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office just two months after the incident! The story is truly one all listeners will enjoy and it will offer a glimpse of the many courageous acts our law enforcement officers do daily from traffic stops to armed robbery: these men and women truly keep us safe in our communities.

In this first of three episodes, Dean will introduce you to Sgt. Walker and you will hear about that fateful December night in 2017 - just days before Christmas when Sgt. Walker responded to a domestic case of a woman having been thrown off a bridge. The couple was notorious for being a constant source of calls in Baldwin County AL, a very rural county on the southeastern edge of the state bordering Florida. After having served as a Marine and a municipal police officer for more than a decade, Sgt. Walker (within this episode and the two following it), tells us about the incident, what it taught him about leadership, and how he’s adapting to his new reality. It’s a truly inspirational story of personal determination, discipline, and leadership.

Seeing the bigger picture is one of THE keys to success as a leader. A leader’s ability to see and describe the future for followers is truly vital to success as a leader and to positioning yourself as a leader that grows future leaders. Dean tells the story of meeting then Asheville Police Chief, Fred Hensley, when he was still a patrol officer and how that experience changed his life. The impactful quote from Chief Hensley to him in that meeting was “Don’t wait until you are chief to think like one.” The Chief also pointed to his chair and asked Dean if he could see himself in it one day. Dean responded “yes” and Chief Hensley told him that was a good start, “if you cannot see yourself in it, you won’t become it.”

Dean discusses that everyone has three current states of thought: past, present, and future.

DEAN’S 8 POINTS TO SEEING THE BIGGER PICTURE:

Mindset - That seeing the big picture is tied to your mindset, which is a product of your paradigm. Mindset is your state of thought based on current circumstances. This mindset affects your attitude which in turn affects your actions.
Begin with the End in Mind – borrowing from Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The goal of any effective leader is to see past the current actions of a follower and see what the potential in them is. What effort are they currently giving?
Open your Mind to the Whole Picture – keep your mind open to all perspectives; the danger of using the phrase “stay in your own lane” is to shut down others/followers from opening their mindset to the whole picture.
Use Both Sides of your Brain – left, linear side is helpful for directing actions; right, holistic is helpful for creating and visioning the future.
Be Mindful of your Self Talk – the dialogue you use to yourself is what will impact your mindset and, consequently, your actions. The average human has 65,000 thoughts per day. Your brain will listen to what you say to yourself.
Incorporate the Big Picture in All Aspects of your Life – Seeing the big picture means you have to see it in your personal, professional, organizational roles.
Make it a Habit – practice it daily. The rule of thumb is that it takes 21 days to change any habit whether it be mindset, diet, etc. Find a way to work on seeing the big picture daily.
Reframe Things – when things happen that negatively impact your daily, weekly, organizational plan, find a way to reframe them into “manageable” pieces that can be “reframed” into a way of positively impacting the big picture. In other words, seek small victories.

DEAN’S LEADERSHIP TIP: Always think 2-3 levels above where you are. In doing so, you will impact your mindset positively and train yourself to see the big picture by viewing it from other points of view.

Judy’s Background:

With more than 35 years of experience, Judy Pal has served in executive management positions for police, private sector and the professional sports and entertainment industry in both Canada and the U.S. Prior to embarking on a full-time teaching and consulting career, she was as an Assistant Commissioner with the NYPD serving as the Advisor to the Police Commissioner. Before that, she served as Director of Operations for FBI-LEEDA, Chief of Staff with the Baltimore and Milwaukee Police Departments and was a member of the command staff in charge of public information with the Atlanta, Savannah, and Halifax (Canada) police departments.

She is proud to have conducted image and media training for thousands of law enforcement professionals during her more than two decades of work in law enforcement including more than 800 commanders with the NYPD. She is also a regular contributing instructor at FBI Regional Command Colleges across the country.

She has worked with international police agencies in Canada, Chile and Trinidad as a consultant, and has taught and spoken at events across North America, as well as Australia, Uruguay and Manilla. Pal is a past president of the National Information Officers Association, holds a Master’s Degree in Public Relations and earned her Certificate in Police Leadership from Dalhousie University in Canada. She spent five years in television news, is the proud owner of a Stanley Cup ring from the Edmonton Oilers and worked for the New York Rangers and Madison Square Garden.

This is the first of two podcasts that Dean talks with Judy about topics regarding police and the media.

IMAGE DEVELOPMENT

It is important to understand what ‘image’ is – not a logo or marketing program, it’s the perception and values one has about you or your agency.
People see ‘police’ as police across the country – one bad event affects us all.
PERF talks about developing trust and legitimacy to help prevent violent extremism, the President’s Tasks Force on 21st Century Policing talks about legitimacy, as does recent reports from David Weisburd about how legitimacy can help prevent crime.
Developing our image in the past was left to the media – didn’t turn out so good for us.
We need to do better.
Become a humble profession.

WHAT CAN WE DO AS LEADERS?

We have to ‘be’ what we want people to ‘think’ – always and in all ways.
What words do you want people to think of when they see you, your cars, buildings, social media presence? Then BE THOSE WORDS.
Brand is a department-wide effort – EVERYONE needs to know the brand and the role they play in creating it. A single interaction can set the brand and is more important than any PR campaign.
3 image-makers: direct contact, word of mouth (social media), and traditional media.
Be conscious of what you are ‘selling’ as your brand. People perceive things differently – be acutely aware of that.

The most often asked question of me by my students is ,“What is the number one thing I can do to change my leadership?” My answer is – your mindset.

Mindset defined is a current state of thought based on expectations and impacted by immediate events.

Mindset comes from your paradigm. Paradigm is defined as the way we are pre-conditioned to think about the circumstances we encounter that were formed by our cultural, social, political, and religious events formed over time and based on our experiences.

An individual thought, event, or experience can influence our mindset. Mindset can be emotionally hijacked in an instant from the experience of an external event. For leaders to be effective, they must find a way to not let these events dictate their response. Often, I talk in my classes about the difference of reacting (emotional) vs responding (thoughtful). You are still addressing the situation, but you have taken the time to decide how you want to be perceived and how you want to address the circumstance rather than reacting, which tends to be driven by emotion and often doesn’t solve the situation.

Two works I recommend are:
Carol Dweck’s book on Mindset and/or her TedTalk.
Kevin Gilmartin’s landmark work “Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement”.

Dweck’s book discusses the difference between having a fixed vs growth mindset.
Gilmartin discusses how law enforcement officers are impacted by hypervigilance.

The show has these points:

Recognize what mindset you tend to fall in (growth vs fixed) and resolve to change it by changing your point of view.
Give yourself a reason to change your mindset (be a better parent or leader) through a conscious effort.
See the bigger picture.
Most importantly, understand that the most important thing you can do everyday is to grow future leaders.

Dean ends the podcast by challenging listeners to consider this phrase as they think about how they can change their mindset: “I ‘CHOOSE’ vs I ‘HAVE’ to do this ... (activity, job function, etc.). When you put it in that frame of mind, you will likely have a better attitude about it and thus a more positive mindset."

Leadership Lessons:

You will make mistakes in your career and the key is to learn from them.
Start thinking like a leader earlier in your career by developing relationships internally and externally.

Communication :

Handle tough decisions personally and quickly.
Be available and make sure they know you care.
Be mindful of non verbal cues. As a leader, you have the ability to change a person's day.

Episode 2: Motivation

Dean encourages everyone to stop waiting on someone else to make you great! Go out and do it yourself. As he often discusses in his classes, you have to “want to” - whether it’s to be a great parent, leader, coach, or person … it’s up to YOU to make that happen.

Motivation is defined as a reason(s) for doing something; it’s what separates the do-er from the don’t-er.

SELF-MOTIVATION:

He then discusses the three phases of motivation:

Kinda wanna do it, but only if it’s easy.
Really wanna do it, but you keep getting blocked or frustrated.
I am driven to do it.

He challenges you to ask yourself: What are you “driven” to do? Then make it intentional and take deliberate action. Finding out what drives you to success and what actions are motivating you to action will give you the internal value (or intrinsic) motivation to continue striving for that success.

MOTIVATING OTHERS:

When you are self-motivating, you tend to have an easier time creating a followership. In order for a leader to create that, the leader must create an environment where his/her followers believe the following:

Followers believe you care about them as people.
They have to trust you.
Your motivation is pure in wanting them to improve.
You must show them the bigger picture by showing them where the organization is going and how they can help get there.
You must create a partnership with your people in achieving organizational goals.
You must learn to INSPIRE followers and NOT MANIPULATE them by explaining your “why” of leadership so that they see how they connect to it.

DEAN GIVES 5 TIPS FOR CREATING A SYNERGISTICALLY MOTIVATED ORGANIZATION:

EFFORT VS REWARD

See the bigger picture as a leader and share that vision with others.
Create small victories for your people so they feel successful.
Set goals that are both easy and hard at the same time (and announce them).
Make the goals achievable.
Hold everyone, including yourself, accountable.

Episode 1: Intentionality

In this first episode of "Straight Talk on Leadership", host Dean Crisp talks about the importance of Intentionality in all you do as a leader. He shares stories from his own leadership journey. Later, Dean is joined by Leaders Helping Leaders Network Operations Manager, Kelle Corvin who provides an overview of what LHLN is all about and what we are striving to accomplish over the next several months.

Quote of the episode by John Maxwell: “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”

Dean introduces the podcast as one that is about the listener not him. He wants listeners to have one of each of these moments in each episode:

An ‘aha’ moment that he likens to a Google search.
A "Bam" moment that Dean describes as 'wow' that makes sense.
A “Kaboom” moment where one not only “gets" it, but sees how to “do” it.

The Art of Intentionality & The Business of Leadership is understanding both the art and act of being intentional in your daily leadership journey. Becoming intentional means becoming wise about the business of leadership. This means that you develop a business acumen about your job and leadership.

Dean ends the show with a "No B.S." Tip of the Week on Leadership where he challenges listeners to take one small step to self-improvement. Pick one area of your leadership where you need to improve or “level up” then use a journal or notepad to “jot” down daily what you did to improve. Do this consistently for a week and see if you aren’t consciously better by intentionally focusing on that area for improvement.

Remember that being intentional requires discipline, determination and focus.
