In this episode, I have two wonderful people and artisans on the podcast, Julie & John Taber of Taber & Company. This husband and wife duo have been together in life and business for 30+ years and they are going to share their story with us. Taber & Company is located in Tucson and specializes in high-end custom furniture, doors, cabinetry and millwork that are individually designed and handcrafted in Arizona. John is a "Master of the Southwest" and has mastered the art of enhancing the natural beauty of the wood he uses with his proprietary blend of stains and waxes.

We all met back in 2006 while working on a home in Paradise Valley, and we are currently working on two new homes that are about completed in PV and Arcadia. One special aspect about their company is how considerate they are about the wood they use and ensuring as little waste as possible in their local harvesting and milling of their wood. Willamette Valley Wine + Food Tour Reunion

In this episode Mark gets together with a handful of our past Willamette Valley Lifestyle Tour guests to relive the memories and continue the friendships that were made on this fabulous 5-night trip last August. This is our only tour we do within the country and it is an easy getaway that only takes a few hours to get to, but feels like you are miles away. We take guests to the heart of the Willamette Wine Valley in Central Oregon to explore one of Wine Enthusiast’s Wine Regions of the Year that is truly a hidden gem. This year we are taking 14 guests from June 12-17 - spots are still available!

Everyday we visit incredible local wineries, tour some of the vineyards and an olive oil mill, learn about the process and of course enjoy food and wine pairings! Every evening we enjoy a multi-course dinner of local, often farm-to-table cuisine and meet the owners and chef. In between eating and drinking, we have leisurely mornings and nights at the lovely Setting Inn. You will wake up to views of the vineyards and lavender fields, and will have the opportunity to take a guided hike amongst 100-year old trees, visit the local boutiques or farmers market, and relax by the Inn's fire pit with a drink and cigar. Our guest today is Nick Hogan, Co-Owner and CEO of Flagship Restaurant Group, the team behind the popular new, award-winning restaurant Pyro in Arcadia, next to the Global Ambassador. In addition to Pyro, they have 16 other restaurant concepts spanning across Arizona to Chicago to Nashville! This team has defied the odds of successfully creating and managing multiple restaurant concepts simultaneously and talks about all the risks and luck in this journey.

In this episode we’ll hear about how this restaurant group founded over 20 years ago in Omaha, NE got started with a team of four friends who are still the same group of owners. Since, they have grown to multiple cities and states and over 40 locations and become a success here in Arizona. Just like architecture, this career is a mix of creativity and mathematics and takes a great team and leadership.

Creating Gastronomic Masterpieces With ArchiChef Cory Oppold

This episode is a re-visit of a past episode with Chef Cory Oppold, who was just awarded "Top Chef" and his new restaurant Course was awarded "Emerging Restaurant of the Year" by The Arizona Restaurant Association.

Cory was a former winner of Food Network’s Chopped, and new owner of Course, a fine dining restaurant in Scottsdale. At Course, “Chef Cory Oppold and his culinary team take you on a food exploration through an explosion of both your taste and visual senses, using seasonality of products and a progression of flavor.”

Cory’s prior positions include teaching at the Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, Executive Chef at Tarbell's restaurant in Phoenix and Executive Chef at Atlas Bistro. His childhood was spent on an dairy farm in a small town in Illinois. It wasn't until he came to Arizona to study architecture that Cory first encountered fine dining and the experience led him to enroll at the Scottsdale Culinary Institute where he graduated with honors in 2002.

Today, Corey was able to transition his upscale catering and event dining company Course into a full-service restaurant in early 2023. Cory’s innovative spirit makes his dishes not only creative delights, but also accessible in many different dining experiences. “I believe a menu is everything a chef wants to say at that time and moment and it’s hard for us to tell our story with one dish. That is why every guest gets multiple courses while experiencing my cuisine,” says Chef Cory.

We also had the privilege of having Corey join us in the Candelaria Kitchen for a cooking class a few years back! In the video on our website & YouTube, he walks us through making pan seared scallops with cornbread pudding, zucchini, fennel soubise, and tomato coulis.

Robyn was born in South Africa, but grew up in Irvine, CA and moved to NYC to pursue fashion, which is where the two met and married.

Capturing Ways Of Living Through Photography with Werner Segarra

Today's guest is an amazing artist, photographer, father and friend, Werner Segarra. From photographing the mega-mansions of PV and Scottsdale, to the dirt floor casas of Mexico and Puerto Rico, Werner has an eye for capturing the spirit of a place. Werner had humble beginnings in Puerto Rico, and now shoots for a handful of top magazines and designers, including many of the homes featured in our design book, "Mark Candelaria Homes", and currently has his work on exhibit alongside Andy Warhol!

Werner’s passion lies in landscape and "slice of life" photography and we begin the episode by talking about his upcoming event at Western Spirit Scottsdale Museum where he has 57 large-scale photographs on display now through February, 2024. His exhibit focuses on the culture and heart of the Northern Mexican Cowboy, a people who are born and die cowboys, and the beautiful, stark landscape around them. Werner shares the stories of his time down there visiting as a child and now as an adult and how much the area, the culture, and the process of ranching has changed and how his photos have helped preserve and showcase their unique way of life.

Werner shares how his personal life and early career inspired his personal photography and style and how today he approaches each photography project in the moment, collaboratively with the subject/scenery/client. Mark and Werner conclude with talking about who and what inspires them, how they stay creative, where they like to travel, what it takes to be successful and what Werner has coming up next.

That's a Wrap on our Summer Trip to Scotland

This podcast features a conversation on the last day of our recent personal trip to Scotland we took May 30th - June 10th. Our group included Isabel and myself, our friends and past Candelaria Design Tour travelers, Anthony and Gicela Dulcich, and Isabel’s mother, Alette Thompson who was celebrating her 75th birthday.

As for why she chose Scotland for her birthday trip, during the pandemic Alette did a lot of research on their family and found that their ancestry was from Scotland. She traced back their ancestors as far as the 1300’s, including Scottish royalty and the castles they lived in! Thus, these castles became our itinerary and we based ourselves in Edinburgh, Scotland in a lovely AirBnB and from there we explored castles, distilleries, St. Andrews, and the countryside of Scotland including the Scottish Highlands.

What a marvelous trip and this episode was recorded on our final day, so some wonderful reflective thoughts are shared from our journey. Enjoy~

Celebrating 6 Years Cancer Free with Dr. Rubin and Dr. Darling

Our guests today are two incredible doctors, Dr. Dan Rubin, a naturopathic oncologist and Dr. Mia Darling a naturopathic specialist. They graciously took the time to talk with us today on this podcast, but have appeared on many podcasts prior, professional medical panels and even had their own talk series called “Ad hoc with a doc” which you can find on their website listenandcare.com.

The reason we are here today is because 6 years ago on this weekend Isabel was first diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer which later metastasized to her brain! Yet miraculously here we are with Isabel having a clean bill of health. One of the most key components of her recovery and now part of her ongoing health maintenance program is her discovery of Naturopathic Specialists, LLC, who she has been seeing for 6 years and now she has me going and I have been visiting them regularly for over two years now!

We start by having the doctors share what naturopathic medicine is and what makes it different from traditional Western medicine. Then we learn about each doctor's extensive background and their areas of specialization. Next we get into Isabel's treatments, ozone therapy, Epstein Barr, and discuss general health, wellness and longevity tips.

Meet our 2022 MVP: Team Director Tyler Bulriss

Tyler started at Candelaria Design in 2016, his first job in Arizona, after Googling some firms and submitting his resume. He moved out to AZ from upstate NY when he was 24, sight unseen, per his Aunt & Uncle's recommendation who lived out here. No architecture degree, just a drive to learn and work hard, and he's certainly proved successful at both! From a young age Tyler loved Legos and Lincoln Logs, then in high school he went to a trade school in the afternoons where he got into architecture. He went to architecture school for two years, then got a job for a structural engineer in NY, then moved to AZ shortly after.

We talk about some of Tyler's first projects and current projects, how there's always more to learn everyday in this field, both technically and aesthetically, and how he's grown as a leader.

We also dive into his life experiences, his hobbies beyond architecture and how driven he is to expand his potential, physically and mentally, try new things and give back to the community. Tyler is truly inspirational and we are so lucky to have him on our team!

Our guest today is Robin Sewell, founder and CEO of Sewell Media Group and the creator, executive producer and host of Arizona Highways Television which showcases the people and places of Arizona, reflecting the heart and soul of our communities.

Robin began as a struggling actress/server, but soon discovered her love for broadcast journalism and started as an intern at Channel 10 in Phoenix! She explains how she moved up the ranks to become a news anchor in major markets such as Fort Meyers, Sacramento, Seattle and finally back to Phoenix with ABC in 1996.

After many years as an anchor, traveling all over the world covering news stories, including 9/11, Robin was ready for a change. Robin became the first to create a statewide syndicated show that's been on the air since 2004 and garnered more than 30 Emmy awards!!

In this episode we hear all about Robin's time in news/television and how she created her own award-winning media group and first statewide syndicated television show. She also shares all the amazing things she has learned, places she has visited and people she has met through Arizona Highways and we talk about some of our favorite, less-known cities in Arizona. Candelaria European Holiday Tour

Happy 2023! In this first podcast episode in the new year Mark and his oldest daughter Tiffany talk about their incredible Christmas and New Year spent in Europe! Mark treated his three daughters on an incredible holiday trip where they spent 4 nights in Paris (scouting for our CDA France Tour this September), 3 nights in Zurich, Switzerland (to go someplace none of them had ever been), 4 nights in Florence and 3 nights in Rome (because they love Italy)! The youngest daughter is 17 and off to college next year, so Mark figured this might be the last time all 4 of them could take the time to do a trip like this, especially given the last time they all took a trip together for the holidays was back in 2015!

Mark and Tiffany share all the logistics that went into this trip, from expedited passports, to AirBnBs overseas, to trains strikes, to navigating the metro and other helpful tips when traveling to multiple cities abroad. Of course they will also recount all the fun stuff too, like the amazing restaurants, the Christmas Markets, the famous sights and the memories they made.

Meet our 2021 Co-MVP Architect Rebecca Roe

Every year our company takes the time to nominate individuals our team for MVP of the year and then we each cast our vote for MVP, well this year there was a tie, we had both Team Director and Project Architect Rebecca Roe and our Director of Lasting Impressions, Janice Rantanen take the top votes for 2021’s MVP, so they are each featured in their own podcast episode!

Rebecca was born and raised in a small town in upstate New York in an old farmhouse on her family's dairy farm. She spent much of her youth playing with legos, building forts and creating and renovating with her dad, which spurred her passion for architecture. From an early age that passion never faded and she went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree in Architectural Technology. During college she traveled to Italy, an invaluable experience that sparked her interest in classic architecture.

Following graduation Rebecca immediately found her home at a Syracuse firm specializing in historic architecture and preservation. She spent over ten years with that firm learning valuable skills and techniques. In the fall of 2016 Rebecca moved to Arizona to be near family. She began with Candelaria Design in November as a Job Captain and is still happily working away and has moved up the ranks to Team Director.

They discuss leadership, architecture, different design styles, some of the current projects Rebecca's working on and what makes each one interesting and challenging.

Janice has lived in the Valley since 1982 and joined Candelaria Design as Director of Lasting Impressions early 2019. Prior to joining Candelaria Design she represented a semi-custom home builder in selling many of Scottsdale’s finest communities. We were fortunate enough to meet Page last summer on a guided Pinot Wine Walking tour that Page herself led that day. Today, March 4th, Mark celebrates his 40th anniversary of his first day working as an architect and has two special podcast episodes!

Some 2000+ homes later and over 20 tours, it’s rewarding to look back and remember where this all started! I am SO grateful to all of my colleagues who helped me along the way, my clients who trusted in me and gave me the opportunity to create their dreams, and my family who put up with my endless efforts and hours in creating these homes and now our company, Candelaria Design!

To celebrate and tell the story I have created two podcast episodes, the first episode is with the two people who were with me on that first day in 1982. These special guests are CCBG President and Architect, Brian Cassidy and Dianne Kleber who ran George’s office and called and told me I had gotten the job!.

Chef Dario Pisoni is the Owner and Head Chef of the amazing restaurant Rosemarino Osteria Italiana in Newberg, Oregon. It has been rated one of the best restaurants in Oregon and the country just four years after opening in 2015 and I have had the pleasure of dining here now a couple times, including just last night where we enjoyed an incredible five course dinner and wine pairing with a sold out crowd of fellow diners.

We have fun exchanging memories of Italy and their fabulous food and wine, Dario shares his life story in Italy, how he gained his love for cooking from his Italian Grandma, and how he and his wife ended up moving to this small town of Newberg. Dario shares what it's like running a restaurant, his favorite recipes, cookbooks, and places in Italy and other interesting topics. Mark and Frank talk about the incredible fundraising event held last month at a private home in PV where Mark and his daughters cooked and served Paella to the nearly 200 guests in attendance. At the end of each event, in each of the seven states, Frank gives each "baller" their time in the spotlight to talk about themselves and their hobbies, wishes, etc. before they are surprised with one of their big wishes being granted!! The look on the children's faces and their parents when these wishes are granted is incredibly heartwarming and it's no wonder Frank has dedicated the past 9 years of his life to keep this foundation flourishing. . . even despite a year-long pandemic!

Karin Candelaria - Mom's Story on Mother's Day

This week's podcast episode features Mark's mother, Karin Candelaria as they spent Mother's Day together visiting, cooking, sharing stories, and recording this podcast episode!

Karin shares the story of her dramatic childhood leaving everything behind to flee their home in East Prussia, Germany during WWII. The family then spent many years in hiding on farms in the Baltic Islands, then their journey continued to a refugee camp in Munich, then in Mannheim.

One day in her late teens, Karin met Don Candelaria, who was there with the Army, at the town's cultural center just a couple months before he had to return to America. The following year, when Karin was 18 she moved to Calgary, Canada and got a job as a nanny, which helped her learn English. All the while, her and Don are still writing letters. About two years later in 1959, Karin was persuaded by Don to take a Greyhound bus to Durango, CO for a visit while she was on summer with the family she worked for in Idaho. . . well the rest is history, listen in to hear what happened from there in her incredible life story!

This week's guest is someone I have been collaborating on projects for almost 40 years, and has become a very close friend, Walter Spitz. Walter is the Founder, Principal and Senior Designer of Creative Designs in Lighting, an architectural lighting firm who has been specializing in "lighting for that special look" for over 40 years.

Walter began at a large lighting showroom in Phoenix as a teenager and developed a “theatrical eye” by designing for the stage, first while in school, then went on to light professional performances. This experience, combined with a growing fascination in lighting, led him to study at Banff Center of Fine Arts under Laszio Funtek. Walter has gone on to become an award-winning lighting designer, recognized across the country as a residential lighting expert.

Helping the Homeless with Jason Barlow & Chris Owen of Habitat for Humanity

In today’s episode, Mark speaks with Jason Barlow, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona and Chris Owen, former Banking Executive turned Real Estate Agent and Chairman of the Board at Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona. Habitat is celebrating their 35th year in the Valley of the Sun and have now built more than 1,160 homes and renovated or repaired thousands more since 1985. “As long as God continues to bless us with amazing volunteers and generous sponsors like you, we will continue to grow our efforts,” says Barlow.

The need for housing has become more essential than ever given the pandemic and hot real estate market here in Phoenix, and Habitat for Humanity fills this need for many locals struggling to afford housing. Since the outbreak, 12 new homes have been completed and their five Habitat ReStores have reopened for business along with their offices. The Habitat Central AZ team is currently planning the construction of 46 new homes through next Spring, and hundreds of other homes will be repaired or renovated.

In a past podcast episode, we recorded on-site of a Habitat home build where we interviewed Jason Barlow, a few volunteers and even the man who was going to be inhabiting this new house! He was there helping out as well and his joy was so apparent and touching and he had a sense of pride as he got to help build the house as well. Elevating our Urban Youth with Dalila Gamper and Jazmine Hall

Dalila started as a teacher with Elevate back in 2009 and is now the Executive Director and Jazmine, who was actually one of Dalila's student's while in high school, has become the Development Director for Elevate Phoenix! Candelaria Design has been involved the past few years as a mentor and has attended and sponsored some events since being introduced to Elevate through our client, PGA Pro, Tom Lehman.

Targeting individual students, Elevate Phoenix provides curriculum and support to aid students at risk of dropping out of school, through meaningful mentorships, relationships, opportunities and experiences that shape students into the young adults we know they can be. Elevate employs a holistic approach to meet each child’s needs, which means full-time salaried teacher-mentors, year-round programming, cross-age mentoring and a long-term relational approach in four areas: accredited classes, mentoring, reading & literacy, and graduation and post-secondary plans. Elevate serves roughly 4500 students per year who achieve a 98% graduation rate with 100% of the students having post secondary plans.

Join us in growing their programs across the entire Phoenix Union High School District, consider joining as a mentor or guest speaker, or donate and receive an Arizona tax credit up to $400 for single filers and $800 for married/joint filers. Their mission and their success rate are absolutely amazing and we have been so grateful to see firsthand how together we can make a difference in these children's lives and in our community.

We met Elizabeth many years ago during our Candelaria Design Tour Italy adventures and she has been our on-site chef and host for over ten years now when we stay at her Farmhouses while in Umbria.

This is Elizabeth's third appearance on our podcast and she gives us an update on how things are going there in Italy with the whole Covid-19 Pandemic. It is very interesting to get her perspective on how Italy has been dealing with the pandemic, especially over the course of the recent holidays, and shares her thoughts on how this might play out over the course of 2021.

In this episode, I got to sit down with my friend and former Mayor of Paradise Valley, Vernon Parker. And his lovely wife Lisa.

Vernon served as first ever Assistant of Civil Rights for the Dept. of Agriculture and was a part of the settlement team for the largest civil rights claim ever won against the US, served as General Console of the US Office of Personal Management in D.C., and served as Special Assistant to President George HW Bush.

Vernon shares his story growing up in Long Beach, CA living with his Grandma in a poor neighborhood on welfare, being frequently robbed, watching his uncle shoot up heroin, yet Vernon was determined to lead a better life and make his grandmother, who meant so much to him, proud. Where he went to high school was actually the school the movie Freedom Writers is based around. He overcame so many setbacks and obstacles in life and went on to eventually graduate from Cal State-Long Beach with a degree in Finance and then went on to Law School at Georgetown University at age 25 with the financial help of his mother and grandmother. It was at Georgetown University where Vernon met his lovely wife and the two graduated together and later got married! In 1997 the happy couple moved to Paradise Valley, and by 2008 Vernon was elected Mayor due to his drive and vision! A Look at a Masterful Career with Architect Brent Kendle

This episode features a fellow acclaimed Arizona architect, Brent Kendle, whom Mark met back in the early 80’s during Architecture School. Brent grew up in Chicago and was inspired by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright to become an architect and attend ASU’s Architecture Program. The Passive Solar program they were promoting to students was very pragmatic and eco-friendly, which appealed to Brent's preferred style of design and prompted him to move West.

After 10 years as a partner at Cornoyer Hedrick, Brent ventured on his own to found Kendle Design Collaborative, located in Scottsdale, in 2002. Today, they are an internationally acclaimed residential architectural firm specializing in regionally inspired modern design. KDC’s projects have been featured in luxury magazines, national brand advertisements, international design exhibits, books on modern and eco design, and design publications from more than 30 countries.

Meet a True Warrior - The Inspiring Story of Patrick McLaughlin

Patrick has a true love for life and even though he is fighting against the odds, he certainly hasn't given up. This podcast episode features Chef, restaurant owner and friend, Angelo Brunson of Angelo’s Ristorante. I met Angelo during a dinner at his restaurant back in 2004 while up in Idaho working on a luxury log home on Lake Coeur d’ Alene. We were very impressed with this newly opened, authentic Italian restaurant and of course I wanted to meet the chef behind this great food. Over a decade later, I continue to take my friends and family to dine at Angelo’s during our trips to Cd’A, as the food and staff are still as marvelous as ever.

This September, I was in town for a long weekend to visit my middle daughter Bella during her summer job there and of course, we enjoyed a great meal at Angelo's. In this episode Angelo talks about learning to cook, opening his first restaurant in Seattle, what led him to the small resort town of Cd'A, his faith, his family, his restaurant and the vineyard he shares with the famous winemaker Pasquale from Paso Robles, CA!

Carrie Evans is a photographer here in the Valley and Scottsdale-native, specializing in fashion, lifestyle and corporate photography. I met Carrie many years ago on a photo shoot for a "Modern Man" article in Luxe Magazine. In this podcast we will delve into Jeff Kramer's beginnings as a youth in New Jersey to his college days at Tulane University in Louisiana, to eventually ending up here in Arizona. Then, we actually present the Jeff Kramer 2020 MVP award to this year's recipient, Mathew Grove! "Being Different and Being Kind" with Maria Hansen-Quine

In this episode Mark speaks with the passionately loving parent of 9, Maria Hansen-Quine. Can we just say, we were absolutely blown away by Maria & husband Sam’s compassion, strength and deep desire to make the world a more loving and understanding place.

Along with parenting, Maria has always been passionate about diversity. Twelve years ago, while a school counselor in Washington state she created a diversity unit in which she taught regularly for 10+ years. Maria has created two children's books which are a culmination of this curriculum and her experiences as a school counselor and a mom. "Be Different & Be Kind" tells the courageous story of a character named Mariah and what it really means to be different from the other kids. Things improve for her when the school counselor comes in her class and teaches a new lesson. This book is a great resource to teach children about the beauty of diversity!

Maria has devoted the past 22 years to working with children, has worked in three different states, six different schools, two group homes, an outpatient therapy children's programs, homeless shelters, and has provided court mandated therapeutic in-home support to families.

Maria currently works as a school counselor in a beautiful inner city community in Arizona and her and her husband Sam have nine beautiful and diverse “precious jewels”, seven through adoption and two born biologically. Wine Making in the Heart of Oregon with Bruno Corneaux

Meet the Candelaria Design Principals: Vivian Ayala

We conclude the first season and 50th episode of our podcast Inspiring Living with a person who truly inspires living - my good friend and business partner, Vivian Ayala. This podcast is the third of our three part series featuring my three partners of Candelaria Design. Our first was with architect, Meredith Thomson, then our Candelaria Design CFO, Evelyn Jung, and now my third and final partner, Vivian Ayala who just celebrated her 20th year of employment with Candelaria Design!

Vivian is amazing and is one of the hardest working, most dedicated people I have ever known! We have collaborated on hundreds of projects and looking at what we have on the boards, the best is yet to come. In addition to being an amazing designer, business partner and friend, Vivian is a wonderful mother, sharing her time and love with her beautiful daughter Gabby who is a chip off the block and quite the achiever herself.

Our Candelaria Design family would not be the same without our Vivian. Her energy, passion and trademark laugh is cherished by all of us. Her work is phenomenal, from classic French estates to ultra contemporary homes on the sides of cliffs. The word "no" or "can't" does not exist in her vocabulary - Vivian never gives up and always finds a way.

Meet the Candelaria Design Principals: Evelyn Jung

Our second featured partner and principal of Candelaria Design is Evelyn Jung. Evelyn has been with our firm for 15 years and became a partner because of her unique role with our company - Evelyn is basically our Chief Executive Officer and is the person who runs the business.

Yes, architecture is a business and many architects loose sight of that fact and do not dedicate the resources or skilled personnel to this critical function of their business. Evelyn Jung is dedicated to making our firm its best by instilling systems not only on the financial side of our business, but on the operations, personnel, HR and marketing components of our business, and does so with passion and commitment.

Evelyn started as a temporary receptionist at Candelaria Design in 2005, but soon became a full-time employee and Mark’s Executive Assistant. Three years later, as we all endured the great recession, she became the Director of Finance and HR, and in 2018, we were proud to make Evelyn a partner.

When Evelyn is not managing the business, she loves to spend time with her family and keep active. She and her husband Scott Jung just celebrated their 10th Wedding Anniversary in June (2020) and have two wonderful boys, Nathan and Evan.

Meet the Candelaria Design Principals: Meredith Thomson, AIA

Welcome to our next three part series featuring the three Co-Principals of Candelaria Design. We will start with the principal/partner who has been with us the shortest period of time and work our way up to the principal who has been with us the longest and is currently celebrating her 20th anniversary with Candelaria Design!

Meredith grew up in Phoenix, then attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor Degree in Architecture. Her Senior year she traveled throughout Italy and Europe, fueling her passion for traditional design. She was also fortunate to spend a summer in Chicago interning with Liederbach and Graham Architects, where she discovered her calling to be a residential architect.

After graduation, she went to work with Fairfax and Sammons Architects in New York City, where she spent three years working on projects in and outside of the city; including a townhouse in the West Village and a summer home in Long Island. Missing family on the West Coast, Meredith decided to make her way back and landed a position at Peter Pennoyer Architects; a New York based firm that has a sister office in San Francisco. From there she transitioned into the interior design world, working for Tucker and Marks Interior Design as an interior architect.

Meredith Thomson, AIA, Architect and Co-Principal joined Candelaria Design when she moved back to Arizona in 2013 and has made such an impact upon the firm with her design, spirit and warm personality. Meredith works alongside Principal Vivian Ayala in overseeing the design and production arm of Candelaria Design. She has leant a tremendous amount of talent and truly embodies the Inspiring Living spirit with her designs, cooking and lifestyle!

This week we have a two part series with artist Anna Sadler of Scottsdale-based business Surface Refinements. In Part 1, Anna delves into her work, her craft and the various projects she’s worked on. In Part 2, we learn about her personal life and the amazing places she’s lived and visited and all the stories, people and projects that came with those places. Anna’s life and craft have so many incredible details, we couldn’t limit her to just one hour!

Surface Refinements is a decorative painting company that Anna owns along with her husband Scott, specializing in artistic finishes for walls, ceilings and furniture. They also create custom large scale art on canvas, and do highly realistic antiquing of mirrors, far more authentic in nature than commercially “antiqued” mirrors. “We have an endless array of products that we employ in creating a finish, everything from actual mica flakes, glass beads, glitters, patterned foils, metallic and various other unique plasters, Italian Venetian plasters, Swarovski crystals, gold and silver leaf, pigmented mica powders, etc.”

Tapping your Soul with Abstract Artist Cody Hooper

Today’s podcast episode we talk with Abstract Artist out of Austin, Texas, Cody Hooper. He describes his process for helping clients find that special piece or pieces and how he approaches outfitting a home with his work, matching the feelings that a client wants in their home. His work is exhibited in prestigious galleries and featured in private and public collections worldwide, including here in Scottsdale.

We also dive deep, discussing how after loosing his father and grandmother to a murder-suicide he conquered depression, anxiety and broke the confines of medications to function through painting. This is apparent in his work and the play of light and dark in his art, as he says “needing one to illuminate the other. Art is therapy.” Being true to himself and allowing his audience to see through his paintings and creations is very important to him and we discuss all these sensitive topics and how he's living his best life today.

Checking in with our Friends from Italy

Today's podcast features a collage of friends and contacts all with ties and connections to Italy or are actually in Italy and will share their insights and experiences on how Covid-19 has been affecting them.

From my friend Elizabeth Wholey in Umbria who runs the farmhouse compound, AltaBella, we enjoy every year and just returned from the US and now is in quarantine in her home in Umbria to my friend here in Scottsdale, Marco Felicioli, of Artitalia Group, who supplies many of us with fabulous products and materials from Italy. He will share his experiences of not only what is happening in Italy through his contacts but what he experienced the night of rioting as he sat and defended his showroom in Old Town Scottsdale.

Then we go to London, England and check in with my friend Flavio Casagrande, who is an Italian window rep and is in lockdown in London while he waits to return to Italy and/or the US. He shares his insights on what he sees both in London and hears from Italy.

Finally, we will touch base with another great friend from over 20 years, Gabriele Belli, from Porte de Passato in Central Italy. We have worked with Gabriele for many years including recently on a fabulous home in Desert Mountain built by Manship Builders.

You will enjoy hearing their perspective on what they have been experiencing in Italy, which was particularly hard hit. Elizabeth will share the details of her flight from San Francisco to Rome from just a few days ago and Marco will tell you about his wild night defending his showroom the night of the riots in Old Town Scottsdale.

Building a Monument to Compassion with Charles Keller

Today's episode is about goodness, kindness, charity, and compassion, as my guest today is a person who genuinely epitomizes all of these traits and does so in an energetic yet graceful manner. This person is Charles Keller, Founder of the Colten Cowell Foundation and the Monument to Compassion. The Colten Cowell Foundation is a non-profit that gives children with a disability or a terminal condition, and their families, one-of-a-kind experiences that are both a lot of fun and deeply meaningful.

The Candelaria Design Team is proud to be a part of this work and we have been donating our services of this brand new 25,000 sf legacy project, which is in design but will soon be under construction, featuring the Bat Cave and all the memorabilia from the old TV series that goes along with it! Their current facility is truly an experience on its own, but when you add the children and families the experience is magical and will only get better with the new Bat Cave.

Embellishing Our Homes & Lives with Landscape Designer Jeff Berghoff

Today’s podcast features our long-time friend in the architecture and home design, President of Berghoff Design Group, Jeff Berghoff. Jeff is regarded as one of the most influential landscape designers in the southwest. He founded Berghoff Design Group in 1997 and it has grown into over 200 employees. Throughout the past 20 years, he has continued to develop classic designs transforming residential properties into beautiful garden showpieces, featured in magazines throughout the country.

Berghoff has a degree in Landscape Architecture from ASU, is a member of ASLA and a part of the Arizona chapter YPO (Young Presidents’ Organization). He has received the Grand Award Golden Nugget from the PCBC for superior and outstanding contributions to the southwest in both design and construction.

He shares with us how his love of landscape design began, how he started his business, who and what inspires him, some of his favorite projects, and tips for all of us to maintain our gardens and yards at home!

Creating Gastronomic Masterpieces with Archichef Cory Oppold

Our guest on this podcast is award-winning Chef Cory Oppold of Altas Bistro, former winner of Food Network’s Chopped, and owner of Course, an in-home dining and catering company. Cory joined Atlas Bistro as Executive Chef in 2014, a fine dining restaurant known for seasonal dishes and adventurous diners. “I believe a menu is everything a chef wants to say at that time and moment and it’s hard for us to tell our story with one dish. That is why every guest gets multiple courses while experiencing my cuisine,” says Chef Cory.

Cory’s prior positions include teaching at the Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, working in the kitchen at Binkley's Restaurant and as executive chef at Tarbell's restaurant in Phoenix. His childhood was spent on an dairy farm in a small town in Illinois. It wasn't until he came to Arizona to study architecture that Cory first encountered fine dining and the experience led him to enroll at the Scottsdale Culinary Institute where he graduated with honors in 2002.

Today, Cory remains at Atlas Bistro but also loves to bring the dining experience to people's homes with his catering and event dining company Course. Course provides customized, 4-8 course menus serving anywhere from 4 to 20 people, as well as Tapas or small plate options for small events or large-scale catering. Cory is also launching a new takeout concept called Simmer Down where Cory prepares a wonderful dish that simply needs to be cooked/heated at home. Cory’s innovative spirit makes his dishes not only creative delights, but also accessible in many different dining experiences.

Making a Full Pirouette in the Restaurant Business with Mark Tarbell

Today’s guest is one of my all-time icons, Mark Tarbell of Tarbell’s Restaurant! You all know how much I love to cook, but this guy is at the top of the top when it comes to this profession and passion we both share. Mark will talk about his culinary beginnings in Amsterdam and Paris, share what it was like to compete on and win Food Network’s “Iron Chef America” and achieving his dream of opening his own restaurant in 1994.

Hundreds of accolades later, the Tarbell’s team continues to serve contemporary dishes and classic comfort food in the elegant, art-filled space. Being in the restaurant business right now as we all know is as tough as it gets and we will get into this during the podcast. Riding the Cycle with Rafterhouse Austin King

Having already accomplished his dream as a professional cyclist in his early 20’s, he had to make “the toughest and easiest decision of my life to stop cycling” and stay in one place long enough to start a new career and life with his girlfriend who lived in Tucson, AZ. Just before his final race in 2007, Austin obtained his real estate license, proposed to his girlfriend, now wife of 10 years, and began a new chapter. Spending the first few years learning the ropes of real estate in an incredibly challenging market, it was the determination, grit, and work ethic learned from his cycling days that helped him succeed.

Utilizing his real estate knowledge along and an entrepreneurial desire to improve residential property, Austin began flipping houses with some friends. What started as a casual venture soon grew into the creation of Rafterhouse in 2013, which has progressed from small ‘fix and flip’ cosmetic projects to large scale multi-million dollar new construction custom home builds. Receiving local, State, and National recognition,
including two pilot television episodes with HGTV, Rafterhouse is considered a leader in Phoenix’s custom home building and interior design community. Rafterhouse and most of their projects are located in the Arcadia neighborhood of Phoenix, and in addition

Fighting Day and Night with Jimmy Walker

Truly a man that inspires so many of us, Jimmy Walker, founder and figurehead of Celebrity Fight Night which he started along with his good friend, Charles Barkley in 1994. As the event grew, Jimmy Walker collaborated and worked side by side with the great Muhammad Ali for nearly 20 years before he passed and has raised millions of dollars for the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center and the Banner Neurological Institute. This year's event in Phoenix, AZ has been postponed to October 3, 2020, tickets and info here.

Jimmy is very active at St. Vincent DePaul in downtown Phoenix brining in guest speakers including myself with his "Never Give Up" lunch every week.

Jimmy is a man of great faith, loves his family and especially his beautiful wife of 52 years, Nancy, and his seven grandchildren.

His insurance business is beyond amazing representing renowned and recognized stars, sports figures and celebrities. His newest venture is Celebrity Fight Night Italy with singer Andrea Bocelli, now celebrating its 5th year.

Accomplishments and accolades aside, Jimmy Walker is a good friend and someone I greatly admire and someone that inspires me and hopefully will inspire you!

Fear grips all of us in some form and if we haven't developed skills to help us cope with our fears, they will hold us back from our full potential. She will share what it was like to get the news that she was being given this award, but then the fact she would have to give an acceptance speech and face her phobia of public speaking.

Again, we all experience fear to some degree including now as we collectively fear the effects of the coronavirus, the markets, the economy, frankly there is always something to fear but how we deal with it makes the difference in how we enjoy our lives.

Keeping the Balls in the Air with Frank DeBlasi

In this episode we visit with Financial & Wealth Management Advisor, Frank DeBlasi. But we are are not talking about monetary wealth in this episode, rather the wealth from Inspiring Living that Frank has found from taking a positive spin on his life events with his nonprofit foundation, Ballsfest!

Ballsfest, is an organization that lifts the spirits of children, young adults, and their families affected by cancer. Frank shares the joys and journey of creating this nonprofit, including how his own battle with testicular cancer inspired him. Since founding Ballsfest in 2013, Frank has provided 56 young cancer warriors, or “Ballers” as they are called, with spectacular, personalized gifts and experiences. Bringing the Bling to Living with Scott & Marla Berger

Addison Taylor Fine Jewelry and the expertise behind the term “DesignThat Defines” built the name recognition and reputation over many years, setting trends in these era’s.

Owner and designer of Addison Taylor Fine Jewelry, Scott Berger and his wife Marla speak about their story from their start and some of the many exciting things they have going on now that have spread across the world all starting from their creations in their Scottsdale studio and store.

Scott personally consults with every client on each piece of jewelry that Addison Taylor Fine Jewelry produces, from the initial concept to the final result. Based on the chosen stone and the client’s initial concept, Scott creates the design and works with his craftsmen to forge every piece of jewelry entirely in-house from start to finish.

His keen artistic sensibilities and appreciation for grace and style eventually led Berger to create his first piece of jewelry over 27 years ago, an engagement ring for his wife, Marla.

In 2004 Scott and Marla Berger opened the business, Addison Taylor Fine Jewelry. Since that time, Addison Taylor has become synonymous with luxury and quality in Scottsdale, AZ. Building the Ultimate Dream Home with Habitat for Humanity

In this episode of Inspiring Living we visit a home, one of thirty being built by Habitat for Humanity AZ, just south of downtown Phoenix by the Central Arizona Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. There are so many ways to get involved with this organization and all of the wonderful ways they make an impact on so many lives by building homes.

We interviewed and visited with Central Arizona Chapter President and CEO Jason Barlow as he described the inner workings and passion behind the people who make these homes possible! We then visited with several of the house leaders on site that morning including Carl Westlund, David Humphries, and John Fischer, all of whom are volunteers that were on site that morning, contributing and making a difference.

Probably the best moment of this podcast was chatting with the future homeowner, Abdul Hissou, who was on-site putting the roof shingles on his new home. You can hear the excitement and pride in his voice as he talks about this experience.

Happy 85th Birthday to my Dad - Donald Candelaria

There is no greater gift than time with your father and today I was able to spend the entire day with my Dad who just turned 85 years old. My father is not famous, he is not rich, but he is my dad and he is the most valuable player and MVP in my life that is for sure. Enjoy this podcast of my Dad and I with a couple Old Fashioned's in hand as we go back to his start in Durango, Colorado and how he joined the army, met my mother in Germany, married her in 1959 and then built a home and future for all of us with what he had to work with - mostly hard work and always being there for us despite all of the challenges.

He is a great man and I am so glad to have had the time to share this moment and capture it in our podcast Inspiring Living. If you get anything out of this it is to take the time to spend some time with your Dad if he is still alive, and if not find those in your life that matter to you and go deep, connect, be in the moment, and say thank you.

Our podcast today features Scottsdale contemporary artist Niki Woehler. Niki specializes in both organic, textural canvas works and abstract high gloss resin art panels and customized waterproof art installations emphasizing rich color that often resemble stone scattered with minerals. Her art can be found in both private and corporate collections all over the USA and Canada.

Woehler grew up in Toronto, Canada and has lived in Phoenix since 1994. She studied broadcasting and marketing at Sheridan College, and spent almost 25 years in the industry, including founding and running a boutique ad agency for more than a decade. Niki is a single mom who in 2012, made the decision to follow her passion and devote herself fully to painting and parenting. She hasn’t looked back since!

Her large scale pieces have caught eyes world wide and she is currently represented by Forré & Co Fine ArtGalleries in both Aspen and Vail, Colorado, Slate Gray Gallery in Telluride, Colorado and Kerrville TX, The Broadmoor Galleries at the iconic Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, and House of Anderson in Scottsdale, Arizona.

He went on to the NFL with the Detroit Lions but that experience was shortened with a bad injury that virtually ended his football career - but not his life! Kent Welborn was born in Knoxville, Tennessee and moved to Tucson, Arizona, at a young age. During High School he fell in love with theater which took him to California and New York where he supported himself offstage by working as bike messenger. After 6 years away from Arizona, he discovered that he needed to bring a better balance to his life and career.

In 2000 he decided to return to Arizona and began his career at Northwestern Mutual. By tile, Kent is the Business Planning Specialist and Wealth Management Advisor; simply put, he helps entrepreneurs with succession planning, compensation planning, asset management and benefits.

He has a strong passion for personal development, and many of his daily activities reflect this devotion. He makes time for important practices, such as yoga, mountain biking, and world traveling, which helps to keep him grounded and focus on creating a fuller and more rewarding life for himself, his family and his clients.

Acting remains close to his heart, and he’s very involved in the Phoenix theater scene, appearing regularly on stage, where he met his wife Heidi. Kent and Heidi currently reside in north central Phoenix with their two dogs Oscar and Pepper.

He was Director of Operations for a for-profit telecommunications company and a Screening Manager for the US Department of Homeland Security, shortly after the terrorist attack of 9/11/01. An Eagle Scout, he is a past Council and Area President for the Boy Scouts of America and served on the boards of the YMCA, County Economic Development Board and was President of four community associations. Making the Cut at Age 90 and Beyond with Bill the Barber

Meet Bill the Barber – at least that’s what I call him. Bill McMurdy is 92 years old and is still cutting hair three days a week at the Scottsdale Fashion Square Barber Salon. He cuts my hair every two weeks and we have been best buds now for nearly three years.

So why Bill the Barber for my podcast? Well anyone who can get to work three days a week at age 92 qualifies for someone who truly “Inspires Living”! List to his podcast – he is 92 so it’s a little hard to hear but you will get the point and you will definitely see that we have nothing to complain about. Get out there and get after it as Bill does every day.

Aging is a big topic and one that we are all facing. In fact the year 2030 marks an important demographic turning point in U.S. history according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2017 National Population Projections. By 2030, all baby boomers will be older than age 65. This will expand the size of the older population so that 1 in every 5 residents will be retirement age.

I encourage you to go meet Bill and have him give you a haircut – he does ladies too!

Marco is from Rome and before starting his furniture career was involve with the Italian Ministry of Beauty of Art doing art documentary. 25 years ago he decided to move to the USA, bringing along Italian luxury products from hardwood to furniture, cabinetry to kitchens. His goal is to make available to the US market not only large brand name companies, but also the small artisans that do not have the ability to showcase their extraordinary skills across the world with his company Artitalia Group.

Jason Harris is co-owner of Furnitureland South, the largest furniture store in the world located in High Point, North Carolina. He is also the Founder of The Design Network (TDN), a streaming TV network featuring entertaining video series all about home design, available on Apple TV, Roku and Amazon Fire as well as smart TV apps including Samsung TV Plus, The Roku Channel and Vizio WatchFree.

A graduate of UNC Chapel Hill, Harris lectures to professional groups and college students across the country on business development, entrepreneurship and technology application. Jason and his wife Jenny have 5 kids ages 8 to 20; and he enjoys family time as well as golf, running and traveling.

Mark Candelaria –Celebrating my 59th with the Ladies in My Life

Ok this podcast will give you a little glimpse into my life and my family as I celebrate my 59th birthday with some special ladies in my life; my mother, Karin Candelaria, my mother-in-law Alette Thomson, my oldest daughter Tiffany Candelaria, and my lovely wife, Isabel! I hope this podcast shows you I am just an average guy who was born in Denver,grew up in Durango and made it to Arizona where I now have a wonderful life I am so thankful for! Mom will share stories from the day I was born. You will get to meet my wonderful mother-in-law Alette and she will fill you in on some of the things we all do together and some of the projects she is working on. Then my oldest daughter Tiffany will share stories of what it was like growing up with her architect father. Finally, my Isabel will share stories from this year’s birthday celebration, her week and freak accident, her recovery and thoughts along the way. Keeping it pretty light and simple this week guys so enjoy and get to know me and my ladies a bit better!

Building a Builder Brand with Brad Leavitt

I so enjoyed recording this podcast with Brad Leavitt, President of A Finer Touch Construction, LLC. He is a very dynamic person, a fantastic builder, husband and father. His career has really blossomed and what he has accomplished in branding himself through his work and social media is very inspiring.

Brad was born and raised in San Diego, CA as the oldest of 6 children. He grew up in the Construction industry and worked as an electrician throughout High School for Grove Electric with his 2 uncles.

Brad accepted an offer in 2005 with Trend Homes, a local production home builder in Phoenix, AZ. He worked 1 year as a superintendent before accepting a dream job building custom homes. Rowland Luxury Homes hired Brad in 2006 and immediately he was assigned to be a Project Manager at the 300MM Omni Montelucia Resort and Spa in Paradise Valley, AZ. Brad oversaw the construction and completion of 34 Custom homes that ranged between 2-4MM each. After completion of the 34 custom homes, he then assisted with the completion of the hotel guest rooms, arrival zone, lodge and spa. After Montelucia was complete, Brad worked on numerous other residential and commercial projects in the greater Phoenix Area. In the Fall of 2011, Brad was ready to begin his own company. He joined with his partner Dave Clark to create and manage their own personal real estate portfolio.

Brad is a very approachable, easy going guy and was such a delight to interview for this podcast. His energy is infectious and his positive can do approach to building and branding his business is remarkable. Check out his work and videos on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn – he nails it.
