Apart from City, England still boast 6 of their 7 European representatives, and boy does that feel good to say. Especially with their new man opening his account in a big way at the weekend against Newcastle. We talk about the relegation stinker between Spurs and United and the resurgence of Everton. We didn't git the 30 goal threshold this weekend but we were treated with a weekend full of beauts. From Harry Wilson's Burt the Chimney Sweep's flick that inspired a very very late comeback, to Isak jumping into the stratosphere to put the Magpies ahead early we saw it all. The EPL action was also squeezed nicely between Carabao and European action to make us wonder what we ever do when the season ends. Despite hardly having a breather, plenty happened off the pitch, Kudus suspension was extended, Mendy got a fat pay check, and the Women's game is once again shadowed by the Men's. We don't live and die by the colours of our scarves for the medals, it's about belting out the songs with 50,000 "family members". Farewell Klopp, you taught us so much about the game and about life. Ahhh the UCL has widdled down to it's last two contestants, Harry Kane joins a team who hasn't gone trophy-less since 2012 and properly showed them how to do it. The EFL seasons are coming to a close and the playoffs are heating up. The premier league is experiencing a 3 way race for 1 place at the bottom and a two way race for the top. What a magical time it is. Season's hopes and dreams have all been but dashed and smashed against reality and many clubs are facing yet another season with nothing. Liverpool's amazing quad hopes are all but over with only the Carabao, Arsenal's incredible form will probably end with nothing, and 115 violations will again be ignored as City will most likely win a 4th league title in a row. UCL Semis, Title race still on the burner, and the relegation battle is spicy. In a week where the table sees a new leader, we were privy to witness a masterclass in tactics and skill in Pep and Jurgen's last Premier League meeting. Although the spoils were shared it was nothing short of what we expect when these two teams face off. Arsenal took advantage of the fight and snuck into the lead on their 2024 goal difference boost. Big games at the bottom of the table all went to draws despite leading positions for the teams who needed it most. Key teams struggling to stay out of the scrap dropped points. Newcastle and Chelsea battled for the top half spot and Villa and Tottenham squared off for Champions League spots. Uncle Roy kicked the bucket, or at least pretended to. In one of the most OG moves from the almost 80 year old loveable owl-man, Roy faked his own death to expertly avoid the thunderous rumors he was on his way out of Palace. Shouting at the haters with a wink, "Can't fire me if I'm dead". The move was akin to faking sick on the day of the big 2nd grade math exam and we applaud him for it. In other news, Thomas Tuchel was dragged out to the open ocean by Bayern and forced to announce his departure following the end of the season which is the cruelest of opposition to Jurgen Klopp's last dance tour. The race for Xabi Alonso is well and truly cooking. Speaking of cooking, Arsenal are red-hot and Ollie Watkins is too. What a weekend we experienced up and down the table, and capped off a brilliant weekend of action with, what one commentator working for NBC described as, "One of the least exciting matches I've been a part of." This made it feel like Roy got off easy as he was lying with a full service hospital service and we were forced to watch the horror of the Monday night game.

Three hat-tricks and three red cards grace the weekend, and Kelly and Gordon pay dearly for it. Three shots and beers to boot cause all sorts of mayhem this week, to the hosts, to the script, and to the weekend prediction. Midlands Derby – Well actually Villa is located in the West Midlands and as a district inside the city of Birmingham you would think that their natural rival would be Birmingham City but
actually their biggest rivalry of all seems to be with West Bromwich Albion. On the other hand
Nottingham Forest identify themselves as an East Midlands team and their biggest rivalry is
with Derby County, Leicester and obviously their next door neighbors Notts County whose
home ground is actually less than 300 yards away from their own City Ground. Which happens to be the shortest distance between two English professional teams.
 So how about the rivalry between the Aston Martin race car and the Raleigh Bicycle. I have
always assumed that Aston Martin cars were constructed in the midlands but it turns out that
the Aston in Aston Martin refers to a testing track on Aston Hill which is located closer to
London than Birmingham… Shows how little I know about history although I am correct
regarding Nottingham and the Raleigh Bicycle. I understand that during the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s
ninety-five percent of bicycles sold in the US originated in Nottingham.
So why did I get excited when I first saw this fixture for this weekend? Well for me I was most
active as a football fan during the late 70’s and early 80’s when English sides dominated Europe.
The Big Four of the day were Forest, Villa, Leeds and Liverpool. You could argue that they were
the Big Four in Europe and not just England. In the eleven seasons from 74/75 through 84/85
those four English sides made it to nine European Cup (Champions League) finals which
included back to back winners Forest in 1979 & 80 and Villa 1982. Leeds were beaten finalist in
’75 Liverpool made up the other 5 final appearances’ winning 4 and losing just the one.
Both Villa and Forest have also won the European Super Cup – Forest twice and Villa once a feat
that not many English teams can claim.
Forest has won the English League once and the FA Cup twice to go along with their two
European Championships while Villa have been crowned English League champions on 7
occasions to add to their 7 FA Cups trophies so between them there has been quite a haul of
silverware.
So I was a little surprised and even disappointed that there was not a juicier back story to come
out of this particular fixture although on September 11 th 2016 Aston Villa tied 2-2 with
Nottingham Forest in the Championship, the second tier of English football and what was
special about this particular game? Well it was the very first time that two former European
Champions have met in a second tier league game anywhere in Europe and even though they
played each other a further five times in the EFL Championship they are still the only two
former European Champions to have played against each other EVER in the second tier.

Another weekend passes and another weekend where Kelly predicts one score and Gordon another and the score that they don't go with ends up being the result.
