Kathryn Weill studied photography at Rochester Institute of Technology, completed her bachelor’s and master’s at Philadelphia College of Art. She taught elementary art, woodworking, and parent education for 40 years. She is one of the founders of the New York Women’s Foundation, supporting women and girls in economic, gender, and racial justice.

In this unique podcast HWM Podcast host Danny Tisdale, took it upon himself in this self interview podcast regarding his experience in a healthcare scare over the last few weeks.

He especially wanted to create this podcast for his male listeners who are like him and have never thought he would need a prostate check and not get a full physical since the magazine was created in 2003.

Tisdale was asked why he created this kind of self-interview podcast. Tisdale stated, “my mother used to always say, ‘common sense is not common,’ with that I realized that sometime we get in our own way – we dont use our common sense – especially when our wives, sisters, daughters, girl-and-boyfriends constantly remind us with love that those of us at a certain age (clearing my throat) that we have to get physical every 1-3 years.”

Jordan "Jo" Green is a creative change agent with roots in Harlem.  He is the inaugural Cannabis Business Account Executive at NYC's Department of Small Business Services, servicing Upper Manhattan out of his office at Harlem Commonwealth Council.  As a technical assistance provider from the NY State Office of Cannabis Management, his role is to aid entrepreneurs with insights on how to become a licensed entity in NY's Recreational & Medicinal Cannabis Markets.  Prior to his work at Harlem Commonwealth, Jo spent over a decade in education, as well as some time in market research, and advertising.  He is the owner of his own creative & media agencies (Exit 18 Creative & Exit 18 Media) and a proud dad to a middle schooler and infant --- and yes he used to work in advertising before starting his shop. He does a bit of everything from branding, web design, and strategy, while also doing Portrait and brand photography with his media agency.

Her works include "The Beloved Community" and "A Lucent Fire: New & Selected Poems". Jones has co-edited groundbreaking anthologies and her poems have appeared in prestigious publications from Harlem to Hollywood. She's received numerous awards, including the 2017 Jackson Poetry Prize, and has taught at various institutions including Hunter College and Barnard College. Savona, in an email, stated, “The panel is about the relationship between dealers, museums, artists, and dealers. There is a fluid relationship between these parties. They feed into each other. Dealers are also introducing lesser-known artists to museums and their new works. Influential artists are using their star power to recommend artists to galleries. This helps the public become more acquainted with different traditions, techniques, and stories."

She continued, "Numbers overall for museum acquisitions need improving but it's moving in the right direction. I have the findings of the recent museum survey. Artists looking to make a splash, still need representation but also collectors. People of color need to buy art and build demand. They can start with prints, works on paper, ceramics, and small sculptures. Participation is key."

Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concerts makes its return to a New York Stage for the first time in nearly four decades, and, Duke’s only granddaughter, Mercedes Ellington has joined the cast! She will be reprising her role of the production’s Narrator, which she originally performed in 2014 in Paris. Sacred Concerts is said to have been Mr. Ellington’s favorite work, mainly due to the themes of love, hope, and freedom that drive it. He called Sacred Concerts, "the most important thing I have ever done." It’s use of jazz, classical music, choral music, spiritual, gospel, blues, visual art, and dance make it a sizable production to produce (which is why it’s been so scarcely presented since his death in 1974, yet it resonates with and appeals to audiences everywhere—and this production invites a star-studded cast to honor this important work.

The New York Choral Society’s Sacred Concerts will be held with free admission from November 18 – 19, 2022, (with a performance on November 19 that will be live-streamed, free), at the Tishman Auditorium at The New School.

Rosemonde Pierre-Louis

Rosemonde Pierre-Louis is Executive Director of the NYU McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research, which is committed to disrupting generational poverty through research, policy and action. In 2006, Ms. Pierre-Louis became the first Haitian-American in New York City’s history. In April 2022, she was appointed by New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to a blue ribbon “Fairness” panel to address solutions to reduce fare evasion.

Harlem-based National Dance Institute (NDI) new Artistic Director Kay Gayner talks new job, her favorite place in Harlem, and more with host Danny Tisdale, on The Harlem World Magazine Podcast.

Harlem born Judge Tanya Kennedy is past President of the National Association of Women Judges, an organization of over 1,000 judges, attorneys, law professors, and law students from across the nation.  She is also a Supreme Court Justice of the State of New York, Civil Term, and the former Supervising Judge of Civil Court, New York County.  Justice Kennedy previously served for ten years as an Adjunct Professor at Fordham University School of Law.  She is a board of directors of the New York City Bar Committee to Encourage Judicial Service and a member of the Board of Overseers of the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, where she received her law degree. And today, we just found out that Tanya has been appointed as one of four judges to the first department of the Apellate Division of NYC Court.

Lawrence has over 20 years of experience in small business and economic development. Along with advising the clients of the Columbia-Harlem SBDC, he is currently a Small Business Development Advisor at the Harlem Business Alliance (HBA), using his skills to provide hands-on counseling to start-ups and existing business enterprises in Central and East Harlem. Prior to joining the HBA, he was the Director of Small Business Development at the Abyssinian Development Corporation (ADC). In that role, he managed the implementation of the Avenue NYC Program which spurred public and private investment to the Abyssinian Neighborhood commercial corridors. He also oversaw the ADC Small Business Development Center and all related small business technical assistance activities. Lawrence's wide-ranging career history has also included being the Director of Programs at the North Carolina Assn. of Community Development Corporations and the Director for Economic Development for the City of Newark. Lawrence earned a BA from The George Washington University and attended the graduate program in Urban Planning at the New York University Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.

Harlem trailblazer Melody Capote talks COVID-19, The Protests, The Arts with host Danny Tisdale, on The Danny Tisdale Show.

Trailblazer Melody Capote was named executive director of the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI) in July 2018. She joined the staff in 1984. During her long tenure at CCCADI she served as  Director of Development and External Affairs, responsible for development, government relations, special events programming, and supervised and mentored countless interns who later went on to pursue careers in the nonprofit arts field and other community-based organizations.  Melody is a graduate of The City College of New York, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies with a majored in Dance, and a minor in Black and Latino Studies.  She is a New School Tennenbaum Leadership Institute Fellow and received her Not-for-Profit Executive Management Certification from Columbia University.

Brooklyn Borough President and Harlem fave Eric Adams talks with host Danny Tisdale, on The Danny Tisdale Show.

Trailblazer Eric Adams was a Democratic State Senator in the New York Senate. In 2013, Adams was elected Brooklyn Borough President, the first African-American to hold the position. Prior to his service in government, Adams served as a police officer in the New York City Police Department (NYPD) for 22 years. Adams graduated from the New York City Police Academy in 1984 as the highest-ranked student of his class. While serving, he co-founded 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care, an advocacy group for black police officers, and often spoke out against police brutality. During the 1990s Adams served as president of the Grand Council of Guardians. In March 2016, Adams was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Within a month, he switched to a vegan, whole food diet that cut out all animal products as well as sugar, salt, oil and processed starches. He also began exercising regularly, including using an exercise bike and treadmill in his office. As a result, within six months he had dropped 30 pounds and no longer required treatment for diabetes.

Dr. Nelson earned an Accounting degree from the State University in Buffalo, and an MBA from Hofstra University, an M.D. degree from Stony Brook in Medicine. Her residency at Jacobi Medical Center at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the BX. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a recipient of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Award. Dr.  Nelson was born and works in Brooklyn.

 C. Virginia Fields was Born in Birmingham, Alabama. In 2005, she was a Democratic candidate for Mayor of New York City, becoming the first African-American woman to seek that office. She served as a member of the New York City Council for eight years. She was appointed President and CEO of the National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS, Inc. (NBLCA), in 2008. During her tenure, NBLCA has grown to include affiliate chapters in 11 cities, nationwide. In 2008, Ms. Fields was appointed to the New York State AIDS Advisory Council by then-Governor David A. Paterson. She was appointed to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Region II Health Equity Council. She is a member of the National Viral Hepatitis Roundtable, Policy Committee and Public Justice Project Steering Committee. Ms. Fields was appointed by Governor Cuomo to the New York State’s Ending the AIDS Epidemic Task Force. Ms. Fields served as President of the Borough of Manhattan, New York City, chief executive of 1.5 million residents for eight years. In 2005, she was a Democratic candidate for Mayor of New York City, becoming the first African-American woman to seek that office. She served as a member of the New York City Council for eight years. Prior to elected office, Ms. Fields established a distinguished career in her professional field of social work.

Gold Foundation Award. Dr.  Nelson was born and works in Brooklyn.

Henry A. Smith was born and raised in Harlem, New York , Mr. Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), and certification in Ladies and Men Tailoring.  Smith also worked at FIT’s Apparel Production Management Department. During the 1990s, Smith relocated to Atlanta, Georgia where he established and managed a custom tailoring shop for 17 years.  Among his clients were Dan Reeves of the Atlanta Falcons and Dwight Eubanks of Real Housewives of Atlanta. Smith is a protégé & beneficiary of the vast expertise of the late Marion William Anderson, Sr. At sixteen he learned of Mr. Anderson from a fellow Mount Hermon Baptist Church Congregant, Lillian Hardison, who had nominated Smith for Anderson’s tailoring program and offered to cover his full tuition.

Keith L. T. Wright served for 24 years in New York State Assembly, having chaired such committees as Housing, Election Law, Social Services, and Labor. His work on the Equal Economic Opportunity and Human Rights subcommittee sought protections for domestic workers and created additional benefits for senior citizens. Leading the Public Housing subcommittee, he championed the rights of public housing residents.

Also while in the Assembly, Mr. Wright chaired the Black, Puerto Rican and Hispanic Legislative Caucus and was a member of the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force.

Active in his Harlem community, Mr. Wright has helped foster small business development, create affordable housing, and increase opportunities for youth. He has also served as the chairman of the Harlem Community Development Corporation.

Wright's father was also politically active. He was New York State Supreme Court Justice Bruce M. Wright. Wright is married to the former Susan I. Gayles and they have two sons, Keith "Jared" and Jordan.

Prior to his time in the Assembly, Mr. Wright held positions in New York City’s Human Resources Administration, the Manhattan Borough President’s Office and the New York City Transit Authority.

And recently made a guest appearance in an Off-Broadway production of "Mandela" as the National Black Theatre. Assemblyman Wright portrayed his friend and neighbor 106th Mayor NYC and some say best mayor ever David Dinkins.

Richard Brodsky has been living with HIV+ since 1997, he is a brain cancer survivor since 2002, and a marathon runner for life. Brodsky is the only person in the world who is living with HIV and brain cancer. At age 67, Brodsky will be running his 67th marathon in Kisumu, Kenya on World AIDS Day 2019, an event sponsored by the Richard M. Brodsky Foundation. In conjunction with the marathon, Brodsky’s Foundation has sponsored 33 orphan dinner dances for 9,300+ Kenyan orphans since 2006 and provided medical care for 1,800+ Kenyan orphans. Brodsky’s future plans include running a marathon on his 100th birthday with his wife Jodi. Says Richard, ‘it is never a question as to if WE CAN, the reality is WE CAN! This is how people need to live, especially those living with HIV or cancer. Brodsky also authored two books: Jodi, the Greatest Love Story Ever Told and the 4th edition of Richard Brodsky’s Journey of Hope is a work in progress.

This conversation was prompted by the article, “A Way To Deescalate Destructive And Self-Destructive Behavior From Harlem To Hollywood,” posted March 27th, 2019, on Harlem World Magazine.

Black children between the ages of 5 to 12 years old are roughly twice as likely to take their own life than their white counterparts, according to the paper, published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics.

Dr. Mark Goulston is a psychiatrist who has specialized in suicide prevention for more than twenty-five years and is the co-creator and moderator of the multi-award-winning documentary, Stay Alive: An Intimate Conversation About Suicide Prevention available for free at youtube.com/stayalivevideo.  In that film, he interviews suicide survivor and CNN Champion for Change, Kevin Hines, who survived jumping off the Golden Gate Bride and suicide prevention advocate and Japanese pop singer, Rayko. Dr. Goulston is also the host of the Stay Alive podcast where he speaks with people who have been touched by suicide. Dr. Goulston is also the author of seven books including, “Just Listen” which became the top book on listening in the world.

David Nocenti, executive director of Union Settlement, Union Settlement has served the people of East Harlem since 1895. One of the largest settlement houses in New York, Union Settlement serves more than 10,000 East Harlem residents of all ages each year through its education, health, senior services, youth development, childcare, counseling, and economic development programs. A few weeks ago Union Settlement released a presidential poll showing that Democratic voters in East Harlem picked Joe Biden as their first choice for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. Biden received 30.5% of the first-place votes, followed by Elizabeth Warren (22.9%), Bernie Sanders (17.8%) and Kamala Harris (14.4%).

Dominique has also held senior leadership positions at the United Way of Central Ohio and the New York City Administration for Children’s Services. In these roles, she led organizational and community change efforts as Vice President for Community Engagement and Assistant Commissioner respectively. Dominique holds degrees from Spelman College, The New School and has recently completed Columbia Business School’s Executive Education Senior Leaders in Not-for-Profit Management program. Although, Dominique was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio she has been a resident and active in the Harlem Community for twenty years. This year the CTH celebrates their 20th years by launching the ancient Greek tragedy The Bacchae. Ty was recently seen in the critically acclaimed production of ENRON. His Broadway debut was in the role of Lt. Byers in Judgment at Nuremberg, and was also seen in the Tony Award Winning production of Henry IV and Julius Caesar with Denzel Washington. He won an OBIE Award for his portrayal of Archibald in the revival of the critically acclaimed Off- Broadway production The Blacks: A Clown Show. Founded in 1950 by John Oliver Killens, Rosa Guy, Dr. John Henrik Clark, and Walter Christmas, the guild began as a small group of writers dedicated to support each other through the practice of developing as writers. The guild soon became a hub that produced some of the most influential writers of their time. Meet active members of the Harlem writers, as they discuss their latest projects, and discuss what membership has meant for them. This is a live podcast at the first Schomburg Literary Festival. Reggie Nance, AARP Associate State Director for Multicultural Outreach, to talk to us about the fact that Harlem residents pay some of the highest utility bills in the nation, yet unlike most states, New York lacks an independent utility consumer advocate with the power to challenge unfair rate hikes in court. Americans already pay the highest brand-name drug prices in the world – prices that ballooned four times the rate of inflation from 2006 to 2017. Nationally, 46% of African Americans did not fill a prescription, according to an AARP study. The Canadian government estimates that U.S. consumers pay twice as much as Canadians for patented prescription drugs and 20 percent more for generics – and in some cases drugs sell for 10 times as much in the United States than in Canada. Consumers are forced to wait an average of 17 months for cheaper generics because of “pay to delay” deals, and health plans can increase drug costs in the middle of a contract year. Utility consumers and New Yorkers who rely on prescription medications need relief!
