Episode 153: Up to Six Billion Ports (Fall Dreamcast News Round-Up)

Fri, 25 Sep 2026 11:00:00 +0100

We said 2025 might be the year of the port, but 2026 is shaping up to steal that title. Tom, Lewis and Jaz are rounding up the latest news on the usual new indies, fan translations and online revivals, but the current star is undoubtedly the abundance of new and upcoming fan ports making their way to the console. We've got Nintendo favourites like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Wave Race 64, Sega all-stars such as Sonic R and Panzer Dragoon, and the first examples of fan-made NAOMI ports coming to the Dreamcast. And that's only scratching the surface!

Sun, 05 Jul 2026 10:00:00 +0100

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup in full swing, Tom, Kev and Brian decided it was high time to take a look back at the Sega Dreamcast's own digital representations of "the beautiful game" that is football (or soccer, for you 'Mericans).

The lads rank the nine officially released football-related titles for the system, along with Premier Eleven, the long-thought-lost Atomiswave arcade title that was recently preserved and ported to the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast football games are a weird bunch, occasionally showing flashes of brilliance, while just as often scoring spectacular own goals. But which game takes home the trophy?

We had to do something special for the 150th episode of the DreamPod. Well, turns out that Tom is good friends with gaming industry veteran and design director of indie powerhouse Bitmap Bureau, Mike Tucker, and getting him on the DreamPod was long overdue.

Joined by the foremost expert on Giant Killers in the Western world™, Kev, we look back at Mike's career in the games industry — from playtesting classics like Carmageddon at SCi Games, to his time at io Productions working on the cancelled Dreamcast sheep-herding title Stampede and spending many gruelling hours trying to break Giant Killers (spoiler: it broke him), right through to his present-day work at Bitmap Bureau creating critically acclaimed titles such as Terminator 2D: No Fate, and Xeno Crisis, the latter of which placed third in our 2024 Top 25 Dreamcast Indie Games community vote.

Episode 148: Dreamcast Magazine Bonanza!

Sat, 28 Feb 2026 16:00:00 +0000

The Dreamcast Junkyard kicks off the year in style with the first DreamPod of 2026 – and we're diving into a subject we know is close to many Dreamcast fans' hearts: the magazines.

Join Brian, Tom, James, Lozz and Lewis for a nostalgic deep dive into the world of Dreamcast mags. On the UK side, we explore the unique style and personalities of titles such as Official Dreamcast Magazine, DC-UK, Dreamcast Magazine (the unofficial one), Dreamcast Monthly, and the odd but fascinating kids mag Mr. Dreamcast. We also revisit Official Sega Saturn Magazine, which evolved into something of a proto-Dreamcast mag in its final issues.

Heading over to the States, Brian compares the tone and editorial style of publications such as the US' own Official Dreamcast Magazine and Ziff Davis' quarterly DCM (Dreamcast Magazine), while Lozz takes us on a globe-trotting tour of international Dreamcast magazines, shining a light on lesser-known titles from beyond the UK and US.

This episode features music from Pizza Hotline from his brand new Hot-N-Ready Remixes Delivered by Pizza Hotline [In 20 Minutes or Less] and his forthcoming Demo Disc 1 EP!

Episode 146: Andrew Fisher, Homebrew Writer for Retro Gamer Magazine

Thu, 30 Oct 2025 15:00:00 +0000

This month on the DreamPod, Lozz and Lewis are joined by freelance video game writer Andrew Fisher to discuss his career and everything Dreamcast homebrew.

With decades of experience in video game journalism, Andrew's work spans publications such as Wireframe, ZZAP! 64, ZZAP! Amiga, Commodore Force, Commodore Format, Fusion, and of course, Retro Gamer magazine — where he pens his monthly column, "The Homebrewer’s Kit." With the Sega Dreamcast having become such a prolific console for independent development in recent years, it's only natural that our scene has crossed Andrew's radar. In fact, in issue 277 of Retro Gamer, this year's biggest Dreamcast projects featured prominently in Andrew’s column.

Episode 144: The Anti-3D Episode - the Best of 2D Gaming on Dreamcast!

Sun, 31 Aug 2025 17:00:00 +0100

When people think of the Sega Dreamcast, they picture flashy polygons, arcade-perfect ports, and Sega showing off the future of 3D gaming at the turn of the millennium. But tucked away in its library is a treasure trove of 2D experiences that were often overlooked in the rush to 3D.

But this is the "Anti-3D" episode, and so Tom, Lozz, Lewis, and Mike R are stepping away from polygon-counting to celebrate the Dreamcast’s flat-but-fantastic offerings. These games may not dazzle with cutting-edge visuals, but still deliver some of the deepest, most rewarding gameplay on the system.

Clunky 3D efforts aren't escaping alive in this one...

Mon, 09 Jun 2025 12:00:00 +0100

Start your engines and hit Tokyo's Shuto Expressway with the DreamPod crew in this brand new episode of the DreamPod! Hosts Brian, Harvey, and Mike R are joined by our friend —and YouTuber— Lemon to dive deep into Genki's cult-classic Dreamcast racing titles Tokyo Xtreme Racer and Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2 — which were released as Tokyo Highway Challenge in Europe.

We explore the unique RPG racing mechanics, stunning visuals and banging tunes that continue to make these games stand out in the Dreamcast's library — while also highlighting their role in introducing Western audiences to the world of underground street racing and tuner culture that would later explode in popularity because of games like Need for Speed: Underground and movies like The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.

We also take a sizeable detour to talk about Speed Devils — which recently had its online functionality restored — as well as Genki's 2025 modern-gen reboot of Tokyo Xtreme Racer.

Sat, 19 Apr 2025 17:00:00 +0100

A decade of DreamPod? Who would've thought? A heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone who has tuned into the DreamPod over the years, and for continuing to keep the Dreamcast dream alive!

The Dreamcast has its very own Holiday classic, and it's called Blue Stinger. Regulars Brian, Harvey and Lewis are joined by friend of the Junkyard Dominic (Dreamcast Enjoyer on YouTube), to talk all about this misunderstood (and absolutely nuts) Dreamcast launch title that features crazy weapons found in vending machines, an acid trip of a Christmas department store, and Dogs Bower.

As a gift to our incredible listeners, keep an ear out for a very special appearance by the voice of Eliot Ballade (and original video game voice of Sonic the Hedgehog!) Ryan Drummond.

This episode originally premiered on the 15th of December 2024 as part of RadioSEGA's WinterFest 2024 to celebrate their tenth anniversary celebrations. This here is the extended, uncut version. It's exactly what Dogs would've wanted.

Mon, 28 Oct 2024 19:00:00 +0000

It's Halloween once again, and the DreamPod is coming out in full force with some terrifying takes as they resurrect a beloved format - this is Heaven and Hell, Part 3, complete with a brand new spooky subtitle of "Dreamy or Screamy?"

If you haven't heard the first and second Heaven and Hell episodes from 2020, it's a format where our panel each pick a game they consider their idea of Dreamcast heaven, and one they would rather throw into the fiery pits of hell than spend another second playing. This time it's the turn of Harvey (on his debut as host - be nice!), Lozz, Mike R, and special guests Dreamcast Enjoyer and Derek Pascarella to pick their games...

Episode 134: 25 Years of the Blue Swirl (a European/PAL Dreamcast Launch Retrospective)

Sun, 13 Oct 2024 15:00:00 +0100

This episode was as inevitable as a blue Dreamcast case with its hinges broken off. Of course the Junkyard was going to record an episode to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the SEGA Dreamcast's October 14th 1999 launch in PAL regions! Blue swirl for life, mate.

In fact, celebrating this occasion was so important that we even managed to convince Junkyard founder Tom Charnock to emerge from his coffin and host the damn thing. Listen in as Tom, James, Andrew and Lewis share their memories of the Dreamcast, and provide a retrospective on the highs and lows (looking at you, Australian launch!) of the Dreamcast's venture into Europe and other PAL regions. There's also one of James' 10-questions quizzes to wrap up the episode... but will Tom, Andrew and Lewis fare better at the quiz than OziSoft did at launching the Dreamcast Down Under?

In this episode, we go into detail about SHIRO!'s origins, the present and future of the Saturn, the strengths and similarities of both consoles, and much much more. We also put SHIRO! on the spot and ask them to name their top three Dreamcast titles.

In this episode of the DreamPod, regular hosts Tom and Andrew are joined by former SEGA Europe Marketing Director Giles Thomas. During his time at SEGA Europe, Giles oversaw the European launch of the Dreamcast after effectively being headhunted by SEGA from his role at MTV.

Huge thanks to Giles for joining us to chat about all things Dreamcast. Giles now runs the branding consultancy MIMO Brands, who work with many of the most well-known companies around, so we really appreciate the time he took out to speak with us.

Episode 101: Room 101

Wed, 02 Feb 2022 22:00:00 +0000

For episode 101, we're doing room 101! Ripping off the formula of the classic British game show (which ripped its concept from Geroge Orwell), James, Tom, Brian, Lewis and newcomer Rich (welcome Rich!) each must convince host Andrew to consign one of their biggest pet hates about the Dreamcast to oblivion in Room 101, theoretically banishing them from the world forever. But Andrew has the final say, so if he doesn't agree then it's not going in room 101!

Episode 100: An interview with former SEGA of America President Peter Moore & Listener Special

Fri, 31 Dec 2021 00:00:00 +0000

Let's get this party started! To celebrate the 100th episode of the DreamPod, it's only right that we'd go big or go home. That's why we got the one and only Peter Moore, former SEGA of America president, on the pod to reminisce about his time heading the company during the Dreamcast's lifespan. We are incredibly grateful to Peter for agreeing to do this interview with us!

Video footage of our interview with Peter is also available: https://youtu.be/WpqwRpkhxZA

Of course we also wanted episode 100 to be about the listeners too, so we're playing the voice notes you recorded and answering all your questions too. Thanks to everybody who submitted messages and questions.

This is definitely going to be a podcast to remember!

Episode 30: NAOMI Special

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 05:00:00 +0100

Episode 30 of DreamPod has landed, and it’s a NAOMI special! With Tom off on holiday (well, unpacking after his move), the Junkyard’s men in Japan and Australia - Ross and Scott respectively - take over the podcast and discuss the games they’ve been playing in the recent past, and there’s a special guest appearance from Ross’s squeaky chair. Ross moans about the state of gaming on the current gen systems and Scott briefly discusses Leona’s Tricky Adventures, but the main meat of episode 30 is all about Sega’s famous arcade system NAOMI. The guys reveal how they got involved with collecting for the system, the intricacies of the hardware, the games they love and the more obscure side of collecting arcade titles. This could be considered an extension of our ‘Expanding the Dreamcast Collection’ series and we hope you enjoy this in-depth look at the Dreamcast’s bigger brother. Oh, and listen out for the worst impressions of a Mancunian accent you're ever likely to hear!

Episode 29

Fri, 01 Apr 2016 05:00:00 +0100

Regular DreamPod hosts Tom and Mike sit down once again to discuss the latest news bursting forth from the Dreamcast community. Ross was also meant to be involved, but a slight technical glitch called ‘British Summer Time’ put paid to that (sorry Ross). Regardless, the intrepid duo plough on to bring you the lowdown on the recent charity event the Junkyard was involved with, and Mike explains why F1 World Grand Prix 2 still holds up in this age of HD graphics and up-to-date F1 rosters. The DreamPod has a world exclusive podcast performance of the recent Flappy Bird VMU port, and the Stone Age Gamer/USB-GDROM fiasco is discussed. Later, your hosts take a look at two newly announced Dreamcast indie games and then try to amicably decide whether Dead or Alive 2 is better looking than Soul Calibur. DreamPod 29 is running on a skeleton crew but the content is anything but threadbare. If you have even a passing interest in the latest news from the Dreamcast community…you should probably go and look at either the DC-Talk or DC Emulation forums. Otherwise, hit that download button!

The DreamPod returns for episode 28 and it’s back to business as usual. Tom, Caleb, Mike and Ross reconvene to discuss all the most pertinent issues from the world of Dreamcast, and get sidelined along the way (as usual). Tom speaks a little bit about Noiz2sa - a game that was released years ago but which he has only just discovered; while Ross enlightens the team on the wonders of Sega Hard Girls collectable figures. The VMU gets a good bit of attention as the new demos and prototype games from Instagram user guacasaurus_mex are discussed (along with some memories of VMU games of yore); and the upcoming shooter-cum-puzzler SLaVE gets another update in the form of an email to pre-orderers. Caleb waxes lyrical about the latest release of ScummVM and the trials and tribulations of creating his own adventure games, Mike claims Gloucestershire is posher than Somerset, the team talk a little bit about the recent RetroCollect Video Game Market, and there’s an impromptu appearance from everybody’s favourite ex-Governor and conspiracy theorist Jesse Ventura. Episode 27

Tom and Caleb convene once again to discuss some (mostly) Dreamcast-related topics. What's the best scrolling beat 'em up on the system? Who did the voice over work in Draconus Cult of the Wyrm? What is a Wyrm? These questions and more are tackled with fervent maniacal gusto, while elsewhere Caleb confesses to having never owned an Amiga or a Spectrum, and this leads on to the recent controversy surrounding the Coleco Chameleon and its alleged Nintendo-based innards. Tom waxes lyrical about PS Vita RPG Rainbow Moon and Caleb does a pretty good impression of George Takei. Ladies and gentlemen, we hope you enjoy this slightly shorter than usual episode of the world's best Dreamcast podcast called DreamPod!

Episode 26

Fri, 12 Feb 2016 05:00:00 +0000

Tom and Mike are joined by Ross, the newest member of the DCJY team. Ross hails from the UK but lives in Japan and so your hosts take the opportunity to discuss some slightly obscure corners of the Dreamcast library. CSK Holdings and their strange Dreamcast/health insurance console editions come up in conversation, as does Tom's obsession with ice hockey games. Mike reveals the additions to the updated Ultimate Collectors Guide, and Digitiser 2000's recent article on Sega's inability to recapture past glories is explored in more depth than is probably needed. Lines of chavs outside the local Job Centre, the levels of urban decay in Bristol and the sheer number of Sega arcade billboards cluttering the neon, rain-swept streets of Japan are all subjects tentatively touched upon. Oh, and there's some stuff about Vanishing Point and some Headhunter music. We hope you enjoy episode 26 of the world's greatest Dreamcast podcast.

With little more than a Raspberry Pi, Luke's bespoke DreamPi image and a dial-up modem, the Dreamcast can go back online and the Dreamcast Now! service lets you know which of your friends are also online.
