Geraldine is a former chronic insomniac turned Harley Street sleep specialist, ex-President of London's Speakers Association, and an award-winning speaker - recognised for both solo and group accolades during her tenure.

Geraldine holds a wealth of healing and coaching qualifications, with clinical experience built over nearly three decades.

Her story began in the media world: producing prime-time TV, rocking around London in her Prada shoes, attending film premieres - living what looked like a dream come true, but was actually a living nightmare.

Chronic insomnia was slowly killing her. Yet in a single pivotal moment, the words "the counselling budget has been cut”, uttered during a producers' meeting on the Jerry Springer-style show Trisha, which she was producing, prompted her to hand in her notice that very day. No plan, no savings. Just a hopeful heart and a dream.

What followed was a remarkable healing adventure spanning three decades. It began with a three-year Shiatsu diploma, and grew to include many other trainings, among them a beautiful foray into Shamanism. Geraldine created three successful practices in London, worked with the NHS, drawing on her healing, Shiatsu, and Shamanic skills, offered charity support for those with substance misuse issues, and took a deep dive into every modality that could shed light on sleep, the nervous system, and the root causes of dis-ease.

Then came a sacred initiation - also known as the menopause, and with it, a deeper layer of healing and understanding.

Through her own experience and her clients' symptoms, Geraldine discovered that insomnia, anxiety, and burnout aren't isolated conditions, but often expressions of a dysregulated nervous system, which, for her, were rooted in unconscious childhood trauma.

This insight led her to ecstatic dance, a practice she first fell in love with in 2011 at Kalani, on the Big Island of Hawaii, during what was itself a dream come true - studying with Hawaiian shamans, swimming with wild dolphins, and feeling the elemental power of Pele, Goddess of the volcano.

Geraldine is now an ecstatic dance DJ and facilitator, weaving music, movement, and somatic therapy into her signature approach - one that draws on the full depth of her training and lived experience to facilitate healing at its root.

Once nestled in the artsy, tree-filled foothills of Altadena, Alison Sherwood, my sister in law, never imagined calling the ocean “home.” But after the devastating fire took her house, her business, and her beloved community, she and my brother were forced to relocate—landing unexpectedly in Redondo Beach.

At first, the beach felt foreign to her. But soon, the rhythm of the ocean became a source of comfort, healing, and transformation. Alison opens up about her grief, the emotional toll of starting over, and how the beach became a sanctuary that helped her reconnect with herself after profound loss—including the passing of her mother.

Have you ever watched open water swimmers glide through the waves at sunrise and thought, I should be out there? Same. As someone who’s been swimming most of my life, I often feel the pull of the ocean—but also the comfort of just being at the shoreline, soaking in the peace and calm.

In this episode, I’m joined by my longtime friend and fellow swimmer, Jenn Yorzyk- Triger. Jenn and I swam together in college in the mid-80s, and while we lost touch after graduation, we reconnected in 2020—thank you, Facebook! While many of us were riding the pandemic struggle bus, Jenn was out there sharing workouts, mindset tips, and daily doses of motivation.

Jenn’s love for open-water swimming has never faded (it has to be in her DNA—her father, Bill Yorzyk, was an Olympic gold medalist!). She brings so much wisdom, energy, and inspiration to this conversation, whether you’re a seasoned swimmer or just thinking about dipping a toe back in.

Along the way, I reflect on how springtime at the beach brings a sense of growth, clarity, and calm, even in the midst of life’s chaos.

Today, I am celebrating my 100th episode of The Beach Speaks, and for some of you, that might not seem like a lot; however, for those who know me, this is quite a momentous event, especially when I look back at episode 50 when I almost quit. It is progress, not perfection, and I am so enjoying the journey!!

Drawing inspiration from her poem The Beach, Michelle weaves her painful, lived experience with grief and loss with practical advice for anyone who wants to support a grieving friend. Like, what do you say? - or NOT say? What do you do? - or NOT do? We want to be helpful, not hurtful.

In 2016, Michelle endured the heartbreaking loss of two out of her four children to suicide. In this episode, I share my eventful month, which included a fabulous trip to Italy, an unexpected bout with the flu, and the devastating and unprecedented impact of Hurricane Helene on our Florida Gulf Coast.

It all started with exploring Venice, Florence, Siena, Sorrento, Capri, and Rome, soaking in historic sites and delicious food, and even finding a few beaches.

Upon returning, I quickly fell ill, causing delays in my podcast schedule, making me fear losing my beach-loving audience. Then Hurricane Helene hit, bringing devastation to the Gulf Coast where many friends and family live, although Jacksonville Beach was relatively unscathed.

I reflect on the destruction of our beach communities, how we prepare for hurricanes, and how we maintain resilience in tough times. 

Through it all, I find solace in the beach, which reminds us of its healing power. I hope this episode offers a bit of hope and connection for everyone facing their own storms.

In this episode, we explore the remarkable journey of Sindia M. Rivera-Jiménez, Ph.D., a native of Puerto Rico who was born and raised near the ocean. With a deep love for the beach, Sindia built a beautiful life in Puerto Rico, earning a degree in engineering, meeting her husband, and starting a family. The ocean was always a central part of her life.

However, a unique opportunity to advance her career took her away from her beloved beaches to the "swamps" of Central Florida, where she became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering Education and an Affiliate Faculty of the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Facing the challenge of teaching Chemistry in English—a language she learned later in life—Sindia's story is one of resilience, adaptation, and maintaining her beach-loving spirit.

In this episode, Sindia shares her experience of transitioning from the shores of Puerto Rico to landlocked Central Florida, coping with the distance from family and the ocean, and finding ways to stay connected to her roots.

For all the beach lovers out there who find themselves far from the coast, Sindia offers hope, inspiration, and practical tips for keeping the spirit of the sea alive, no matter where you are.

Have you ever been at the beach on a full moon?
 
One of my favorite things to do is sit on the beach and watch the moonrise over the ocean. It elevates my mood and stirs up a feeling of wonder and otherworldliness—watching that bright white globe shining on a velvet black sky, that sparkling trail of light shining across the water following the waves to the shore. It’s just magical—especially when the waves are calm, and no one else is around to disturb the "vibe."

I had been waiting for months to watch the full moon rise, and I finally got my chance; however, when I arrived at the beach, my expectations quickly turned to disappointment. This was not the magical full-moon beach experience I wanted, but it was just what I needed.

Today’s episode is a conversation I had recently with Jessie King Regunberg, author of the book SEARCHING FOR SEASHELLS: An Artist’s Guide to Treasures on the Beach 

It’s all about the enchanting world of seashells and how they have touched our lives and sparked our curiosity. 

Jessie’s book is a testament to her passion for shells, art, and history. It’s filled with 200 hand-painted illustrations, intriguing facts, and interesting stories about shells you might already have in your collection (I know you have one!) and shells you dream of finding—perhaps along a magical moonlit shore or on a sparkly beach at sunrise.

I recently had the opportunity to visit one of the beaches on my bucket list—Venice Beach. Venice is on the Gulf Coast of Florida and is often called the “shark tooth capital of the world” because of the plethora of prehistoric shark teeth you can find there. Some are the size of your hand!  

Now, I don’t have the greatest record when it comes to finding sharks' teeth, but I know a lot of people are really into it. 

It’s like digging for gold—if you know where to go and have the patience to dig, treasure can be found. 

As far as Venice Beach was concerned, I did have an idea where on the beach I wanted to go - but I had no clue what kind of treasure I would find. 

I hope this story today evokes a happy memory of the beach for you!

In early October 2021, when the post-pandemic world was beginning to open up for travel, we had just discovered that Ernie only had a month's vacation before starting a new job; we decided to go on a 12-day adventure in Costa Rica!

It was last minute, and I had no idea how we were going to pull it off - but I knew my friend and travel agent Judi could make it happen and, true to form,  she took care of all the details   - from booking flights to finding the hotels and excursions that she knew we would love - she arranged all our transportation and even the Covid tests that we would need to get back into the states  - she had every detail covered so that when we got there - all we had to do was enjoy our dream of 12 days of relaxation and adventure in a tropical paradise. Ahhhh. . . 

But then - on day 12, something happened.

The moment we walked off the plane, loaded our luggage in the car, and drove home, that peaceful “Ahhhh”  feeling I had just hours before suddenly turned to “UGH”—the shock of coming back to “ life.” 

Since many of you are getting ready to go on your vacation getaway, I thought it would be helpful for Judi and Cathi, my other travel agent friend and frequent podcast guest, to give us some tips for making that return to real life a little less…shocking.

Capturing the essence of the beach with my phone is one thing, but in a painting - in real-time - it is a whole other thing.  I’m in awe of anyone who can paint in the moment - no photograph- just sitting in nature with a canvas, painting the scene in quick brushstrokes. You have to stay in the present and pay attention. 

This painting practice is called plein air, a form of impressionism that my guest Annora does so well. At only 19, Annora is making herself known in our local artist scene at the beach where I live. You can see her sitting at the beach at sunrise with her canvas and palette, making quick brushstrokes across the canvas as the scene changes moment by moment.  You could say that the beach speaks to her in a language of shapes and colors - and energy - which she mentions often - and I think every beach lover can relate to that.

But this conversation isn’t just about painting beach scenes; it’s a lesson in not being afraid to “put yourself out there”—to overcome the fear of being judged. It's about recognizing your worth and the value of perseverance.

I was a guest on an Instagram live with Amanda from Northern TIdes Studio and Wallace J. Nichols, author of Blue Mind - talking about water, the Blue Mind movement, and the healing properties of the ocean.

 Amanda asked how living at the beach has changed me. I don’t know why that question caught me off guard - it was a great question. I wasn’t really sure I had the answer - at least nothing I felt I could articulate at the moment.  

If I had the chance to answer the question again, I would say that although I have always felt a connection to the beach and the ocean - now that I live here - we’ve bonded - we’re in a relationship.    

In 2020 when the world took a collective pause, I had a lot of time to sit at the beach alone, to listen, and think about the podcast and how I wanted it to grow. 

I needed to connect with other beach lovers, and since no one was meeting in person, I went to the next best thing - Facebook.  I found the group “I Love the Beach” and posted a question: “What do you love most about the beach?” minutes later, a flood of responses appeared in the comments.

Most comments were about how peaceful, soothing, or healing it felt to be at the beach. And I certainly could relate to that.

But what stood out to me was that nearly everyone said something about the ocean - the water. 

I could definitely relate! That’s what I love most about the beach  -  the water  - - there’s a sense of comfort and belonging -  it feels like “home.”

I felt compelled to tell a story about this relationship with water, but honestly, I didn’t know what story to tell. I made a list: 

Learning to swim by jumping into the deep end of a pool
My first trip to the ocean
Growing up in a house across the street from the river
Sunday afternoon hikes in the woods along a stream
Swim Team . . .

I never really thought about its significance, but being a swim team member was a significant part of my formative years, and that’s when my relationship with water really began. 

Listen as I recall my childhood swim team experience: from making the big shift from being an “OK” sprinter to a long-distance “Champion" and how water saved me from drowning from the pressures of college life and beyond.

When I started thinking seriously about moving from land-locked Orlando to the beach, the first three questions people would ask were, “What beach?” “Where will you live?” and “What will you do?” I would say, “I haven’t decided what beach yet, but I’m sure I’ll find one with a couple of palm trees where I can hang a hammock,  and, I don’t know, I’ll make jewelry out of sea shells, and sell it to the tourists. It was a silly answer, but in my mind, I was serious - if that were what I had to do to live at the beach - I would do it. 

Now, I live in a beach house (not a hammock), and instead of seashell jewelry, I’m making a beach podcast! I love hearing stories about how others have used their love for the beach to fuel their life’s passion - how they create that beach connection - that beach mindset - wherever they are. 

My guest today, Amanda Esposito, artist and creator of Northern Tides Studio, has a unique way of doing just that - taking her passion for the beach and the ocean to create jewelry that reminds you of how you feel at the beach and your connection to it - wherever you are. 

I have been following Amanda on Instagram, and when she posted about her latest creation, “Ocean Love,”  I had to get it! She mentioned that she was looking at places in Florida to sell her pieces, so we ended up on a Zoom call to talk about it, and as she started to tell me the story - I stopped her in mid-sentence and said, “Wait, I love this story - would you be willing to share iron on the podcast”? Of course, she said yes - sharing her love for the beach and what it means to her is what her art is all about.

This conversation means a lot to me. First, I met a new friend! Second, hearing Amanda’s story behind the making of her beautiful ocean love necklace makes me love mine even more! I initially bought it as a birthday present to myself. But when I think about it, it’s more than that - it’s a reminder of the days leading up to my birthday - beautiful beach love memories: the day I met my soulmate for the first time - on the beach, our beach wedding, and celebrating my birthday at the beach.

It’s February, so in the spirit of this Month of Love, I asked my soulmate, Ernie, to join me on the podcast because it’s a very special month for us.

I love quotes, especially the ones that when I hear them, I think, " Oooh, I can relate to that - or that is so inspiring! I need to write that one down before I forget it! " I’ll rush to scribble it in a journal or notebook - it’s like I’m attaching a sticky note to my brain - you know, a reminder, to go back to it later. And let me tell you - there are a LOT of sticky notes in there. 

However, there’s one quote - it’s actually a question - that when I first heard it, I could “feel” the words, the ideas they invoked, tumbling around my head with an enthusiastic energy that flowed from my brain, through my heart, and then - settled in an anxious knot in my gut, just waiting for the answer.  

The quote is the last line from Mary Oliver’s poem The Summer Day: 

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

Imagine, you’re about to do what might be the craziest thing you’ve ever done. 

And you’re thinking this could be crazy good or crazy stupid.

Then the “what ifs” start to creep into your consciousness: “What if something goes wrong?” “What if I’m not good enough?” “What if it turns out to be nothing but a waste of time and money?”

That’s how I felt three years ago, staring bleary-eyed at my computer monitor, my hand nervously resting on the mouse, guiding a bold black arrow across the screen, stopping to hover over a bright green button that says “publish.”

I spent at least 100 hours working on this podcast and my brain ached.  My heart was pounding. This might be the craziest thing I’ve ever done. Just a simple click of a button and I’ll be taking a deep dive into the vast ocean of podcasts. 

Will I sink - or swim? 

It’s a new year, and I’ve been thinking a lot about this podcast and how it came to be - how what seemed like a crazy thing to do at the time turned out to be something more than just recording my voice and sending it out into the ether. It’s actually helped shape how I use my voice.

More than that, it’s helped me trust my voice. To trust what I have to say is something you want to hear.

Recently on The Beach Speaks, I posted an episode sharing my beach story as a guest on Rabiah Coon’s podcast More Than Work. 

Today, I’m bringing Rabiah back - this time as my guest - to hear her beach story. 

Rabiah currently lives in London, but she grew up near the beach in California. When she said she was coming home to California for the holidays, I thought it would be the perfect time to share her story on the podcast. For many of us, this is a time for sharing with family and friends, and when you listen to her story, you’ll find out that family and friends are two very important things in Rabiah’s life. 

In this conversation, Rabiah talks about what it was like growing up at the beach in Southern California and how the beach continues to show up even when she’s landlocked. We also talk about her side gig as a stand-up comic and the important role that service plays in her life.

Hey Beach lover, How is the beach speaking to you today?

I’m sure you have noticed that I’ve been doing a lot of solo episodes: like, how I met my soulmate - on the beach,  watching fighter jets fly over the beach, and how learning to fly was a lot like moving to the beach -  and while it’s been a lot of fun sharing stories about how the beach speaks to me, I thought I’d do something different this time, and share more about my journey to the beach on this episode I recorded with Rabia Coon on her podcast More Than Work. 

We first met as members of the “Squad Pod” - a slack group created by Squadcast - the remote recording platform we both use to record our podcasts. It’s a super supportive group where you can ask random questions, get tech advice, promote your show, and my favorite thing to do - collaborate with other podcasters - like Rabiah!

More Than Work is a podcast that shares stories of individuals who have found that their self-worth is determined by more than their job title - it’s one of my favorite podcasts to listen to on my beach power walks - with each step I take along the shore, I listen to her guests describe the steps they took to create a life beyond their “work” - and think about how I have created mine. The stories are different but to me there’s a similar “vibe”- the kind “vibe” you feel when you stand on the beach, staring across the vast ocean - at all the possibilities.  So when Rabiah invited me to share my More Than Work beach story on her show - I was thrilled. 

This was my first time as a guest on someone else’s podcast, and while I expected to talk about my journey to the beach, what I didn’t expect to come up in conversation were the other parts of my story that go beyond the beach. I have to say, I learned a little more about myself. 

It was a little different being on the other side of the mic, as they say - but Rabiah is a great host and a fabulous human. 

And. . it was a fun way for me to share one of my favorite podcasts with you!

Many of you have asked me how I found the nerve to leave my job - to move to the beach - and not have a job to go to, and what beach? Where was I going to live? 

I would laugh and say, I’m sure whatever beach I go to, there will be a couple of palm trees where I can hang a hammock, and I’ll make jewelry out of shells! It sounded silly when I said it out loud, but in my head, I was serious. 

How DID I get here? I’ve done a lot of thinking about that recently, about the times in my life that I just said, I don’t know how this is going to work, but I’m going to do it.  It’s strange because I always thought of myself as pretty risk averse - not at all fearless -  I would rarely try something new if I weren’t reasonably sure I would be good at it immediately.  I needed to feel safe.

What I keep coming back to is the moment 25 years ago:  alone, sitting in the left seat of a tiny, two-seater Cessna, 152 - about the size of a Barbie car - at the end of an 11,000-foot runway (that’s almost 2 miles long!)  waiting for clearance to take off.

My first solo flight. 

Today's episode is about how it felt learning to fly and how the experience of getting my pilot's license was a lot like moving to the beach.   

I believe that our most powerful memories are etched into our brains by the feelings attached to them. The details might not be the same  - but the feelings are, and now that I actually live at the beach, when I think about all that I went through to get here - I can feel it all: from fear and trepidation to awe and joy.

You know I love the beach, but I also love airplanes! 

This fact is especially poignant because aviation and learning to fly was one of the (many) surprising characteristics that attracted me to my husband, Ernie (You can hear more about that in my recent episode “How I Met My Soulmate - On the Beach”) 

Ernie spent the majority of his Navy career on an aircraft carrier where he worked on the F-18s (the same aircraft as the Blue Angels) 

Jets aren’t a completely foreign concept to me since I have been around them almost daily in my 20-year career in Corporate aviation -  Lear Jets and Gulfstreams are cool, but supersonic fighter jets - In my opinion - are super cool.

The Blue Angels were in town recently for an air show at the beach on Saturday and Sunday, and I wanted to go both days. Because even though I’ve been to many air shows over the years, n my opinion,  there’s nothing quite like watching one up close and personal on the beach! 

But I had forgotten the announcement that the jets would conduct practice runs along the beach on Thursday. So you can imagine my shock as two navy blue and gold supersonic F-18 fighter jets screamed across the tree tops right over my head - to say that I was thrilled would be an understatement. I was ecstatic!

If you are a regular listener to the podcast, you’ll know that I often talk about how I met my soulmate, quit my nine to five and moved to the beach - it almost always comes up in conversation when I meet someone new, and we get to talking about the beach. 

Of all three, I get the most response from the “met my soulmate” part - like “that’s amazing!” Or “How did you do that?” or “I met my soulmate, too!” - and then they proceed to tell me their story. 

I noticed how, in the past several conversations with my guests, the same topic “How we met our soulmate, partner, significant other” - has come up. While talking about her book One Fire Island, Jane Rosen mentioned that she met her husband on a date at the beach on Fire Island, Cathi Taucher met my guest Oneike, the beach lifeguard, at the beach in Negril, and most recently, in the conversation I recorded with Pam Uzell about her love/hate relationship with the beach, she mentioned that she met her soulmate on her birthday, It wasn’t at the beach, but it was a significant time in her life that was the catalyst for her return to loving the beach again.

It made me think about how similar my story was to theirs  - I met Ernie, my soulmate, on the beach - on my birthday! I have learned from past experience that when such synchronicities appear, it’s a sign from the Universe to pay attention - in this case, perhaps this is a sign that I need to tell my story,  on the podcast,  of how I met Ernie on the beach, on my birthday!

Listening to your voicemails is like going on a beach walk, picking up the messages like seashells and adding them to my collection. The voices and stories are different  -  but what they all have in common is a shared connection to the beach - I love them all - and I’m excited to share them with you!

Today’s guest is Pam Uzzell, the creator and host of Art Heals All Wounds - a podcast that’s changing the world - one artist at a time. 

Pam and I met as members of the “pod squad,” - the slack community created by Squadcast - a remote podcast platform we use to record our shows. 

Pam reached out to me a few months ago with a wonderful story about her love-hate relationship with the beach. It starts out in childhood and ends in her adulthood - with the series of events in between that helped shape and form her sense of self-worth and belonging.

My guest today is Oneike Jackson, the beach manager at the Boardwalk Beach Resort in  Negril, Jamaica. I have to say, after editing this episode, I couldn’t stop smiling! His high-vibe Jamaican energy is just that palpable. 

Oneike is a great storyteller; however, he did not want to come on the podcast at first. He was shy, and he didn’t know what to say - but his partner Cathi, who has been on the podcast numerous times, said “Don’t worry, Paige is so easy to talk to - it will be fun!” And true enough, when I got him talking, the conversation was. . .  jammin’!

One of the things I admire so much about Oneike is that he's not afraid to admit that when trying something new that makes him nervous - his way is to acknowledge it and then  "do the 'ting.” 

Also, I will NOT close my eyes the next time I get on a water slide!  

He is very proud of his island home and eager to share its unique vibe with everyone who visits.  It makes me want to hop on a plane and head to Jamaica - right now.

I have a slight obsession with books. My house is filled with stacks of unread novels, coffee table books, and hidden gems waiting to be explored. But today, I want to focus on a specific genre that holds a special place in my heart: beach reads!

A good beach read is more than just a book you read while lounging on the sand. It's a book that transports you to the beach no matter where you are. It's a chance to let go of everyday stress and immerse yourself in a world of relaxation and adventure. And with summer coming to a close, there's no better time to indulge in beachy literary escapism.

Here are five beach reads that are speaking to me right now:

1. On Fire Island by Jane L. Rosen -  This is the perfect example of a book I bought because I heard about it on a podcast! Thsi time it was mine! For more, check out Episode 68: On Fire Island: A Journey of Love, Loss, and Resilience with author Jane Rosen.  

2. Beach House Memories, by Mary Alice Monroe, is the sequel to The Beach House I read earlier this summer. Reading this second book will be like coming back for another summer visit with friends. 

3. Silo by Hugh Howey - I don’t typically go for dystopian post-apocalyptic science fiction when I want to relax, but after binging the first series on Apple TV, I have to read the books now!

4. When We Believed in Mermaids by Barbara O’Neal. This title popped up on a friend’s Facebook post, and I just had to add it to my list because, well, mermaids!

5. Florida’s Golden Galleon’s - The Search for the 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet - by Robert F. Burgess and Carl J. Clausen  This book is perfect for history and treasure hunting fans.

Remember, a beach read doesn't have to be a physical book. Travel magazines about your favorite beach destinations can be just as captivating. And who can resist a good audiobook during a long drive to the coast?

Whether lounging on a sun-soaked beach or simply dreaming of the ocean, good beach reads will transport you to a world of relaxation and wonder.

Even if you can't physically be at the beach,  pick up a beach read off your shelf or pick one up at your local bookseller (it feels good to support small businesses) and let your mind escape to sandy shores.

It’s hard to think about going to the beach and not wanting to take a little something with you to remember being there. It’s like the shore has this magnetic pull, urging you to pick up a seashell or some other treasure and take it home.

But what if you found out that if you took that little piece of the beach -  you would be cursed?   

On this episode of The Beach Speaks, my guest, Jenny Paul, and I discuss the joys of collecting shells, sand, and souvenirs at the beach. Jenny shares her experiences collecting sand from various beaches worldwide, including the fascinating pink sand of Bermuda and the black sand of Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii. 

We reminisce about her connection to the beach, including childhood memories of losing a water shoe and the recent discovery of a silver dog tag on the beach etched with the words "authentic self."  She shares a story of collecting something at the beach that might be cursed, adding an intriguing twist to our conversation. All these experiences lead us to reflect on the profound meaning of the things we find on the beach.  

I’m so happy that Jenny agreed to share her story of the cursed sand because,  sometimes, a “curse” can actually be a blessing!  Although neither of us expected that our conversation would take such an existential turn - it did bring up some interesting questions that I’m sure the beach has been asking me, but I guess I haven’t been paying attention - until now.

My guest today is Amanda Soler; the creator and host of the SolFul Connections podcast.

It seems appropriate that her podcast is called SoFul Connections because Amanda embodies connecting on a soul level; it's in her DNA. 

I noticed this from the moment we first met - on the virtual social forum Clubhouse; I'm not sure in what “room” we connected or what the discussion was, but what I am sure of is why - it was our soul's connection to the Beach. Of course, that’s what the beach Speaks is all about, right? Stories about our connection to the beach!

When Amanda left me a voicemail on my website asking if I would be interested in "cross-pollinating" our podcasts - I would be a guest on hers, and she would be a guest on mine - I thought:  what a brilliant idea to connect.

How do you feel about seaweed?

I bet you could smell it as soon as you heard me say the word! 

When I think about the beaches here on the Atlantic coast, I never really considered that seaweed could be a problem.

I only notice it when it's washed up in small patches along the shore or in the ocean - but it’s never really gotten in the way of my enjoying the beach.

On the Gulf Coast, however, when a specific type of seaweed piles up on shore, it’s an entirely different story. For people wanting to enjoy a perfect beach day, it’s a smelly, unpleasant nuisance, and for some ocean life, it can be - deadly.
 
Scientists following the rapidly growing collection of this Sargassum didn’t consider it too much of a threat to the coastline until recently; the seaweed collection generally stayed in the Atlantic Ocean.

However, around March this year reports started flooding the newfeeds of what had now become an apocalyptic-sized 5,000-mile-wide patchwork of Sargassum clumps floating in the Atlantic - making its way toward Florida and other coastlines alongGulf of Mexico,  a giant blob of seaweed twice the width of the United States was now threatening to dump smelly and possibly harmful piles across the beaches.

I started to pay more attention to this massive “blob” of seaweed, thinking, “Wow, how awful it would be if that blob reached Cancun!”

If you're a frequent listener to the podcast, you can probably guess why I was suddenly all worried about Cancun. I was headed there in just a few weeks!

Is Australia on your beach bucket list?  If it is, you’re going to really like today’s conversation with travel podcasters Lyle and Leanne, who live on the beach in Australia! 

Their podcast is called Beach Travel Wine, and I first heard about it when Leanne sent me a message.  

She told me that they sold their business and retired to travel, especially the beaches, all over the world - and of course, Australia. They downsized and bought a unit on the beach where they can see the ocean from every room and get to sleep to the sound of the waves.

Apparently, 90% of Australians live within 5km of the beach - so you can see how it's an important part of their lives. While Lyle and Leanne love going to the beach to swim and enjoy the water, one of their favorite things to do is wake up in the morning for a walk along the beach. 

The beach is also about connecting with family. Having eight grandchildren it's the perfect place to come together. 

At the time we recorded this episode Lyle and Leanne had just returned from a 14-day tour of Mexico that ended in - Cancun.  I was just about to travel there, so I was really interested to hear about it.

Something else that I really wanted to hear about was their experience scuba diving and snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef and going on a "Reef Sleep" where you sleep out on the deck of a pontoon boat miles from shore on the Reef.  

It's just you, a few friends, and the ocean as the sun sets and the stars come out.

We talked about the best beaches in Australia, their travels to Spain, where they are traveling to next, and Lyle describes one of the beaches that many travelers dream of going to but, he thought was . . .well, kind of underrated.

I was recently inspired to step out of my comfort zone and write a letter to someone that I deeply admire  - my all-time favorite podcaster Rich Roll, host of the Rich Roll podcast. 

Sitting down to write the letter, I  thought - wouldn't it be fun to do it in audio form instead - podcaster to podcaster? 

It makes sense because, you know me, I love podcasts! My friends joke that I’m always saying, “You know, I heard on a podcast…” and, more often than not, it’s the Rich Roll podcast.

For context: On EP 35 of The Beach Speaks, I talk about attending a retreat in Italy hosted by  Rich and his wife, Julie.   It’s a significant part of my story about meeting my soulmate, quitting my 9-5, and moving to the beach. 

I hope you enjoy my audio “fan letter,” and maybe you’ll be inspired to write one of your own!

Do you dream of moving to the beach? 

I dreamed of moving to the beach for so long, and now I can open my front door and walk down to the beach every day!

One morning I was sitting on the sand with my eyes closed, tuned in to the sound of the waves, and listening to what the beach had to say about my journey to living at the beach, reminding me of what I had to let go of and what I needed to keep.
How did I get here?

It all started with a piano!

I was on the beach taking sunrise pictures with my new iPhone 14pro, and when I opened up my photo app to find some to post on Facebook, I glanced at the number under the “recent” file:  46,454! I wasn’t entirely shocked at the number, but it did make me think about how  I could have that many images on my phone!

There’s a lot of talk about how our “smart phones” are making us “dumb” - stealing our attention and taking us away from the present moment, and honestly, there are times when I’m on the beach, I’ve had to remind myself to put away the phone and just be.  However, I really love capturing moments at the beach with my “smartphone”  and sharing those moments with you! 

In this episode, I share my story of how I lost and found my beach connection - with my family, my friends, and my phone.
