This further means that we see ourselves as those who have "made our robes white in the blood of the Lamb." Mark 7 LEGALISM

Often mistaken for an unfeeling application of law, it also encompasses the manipulation of the law through arbitrary definition or casuistry so that it reflects the will of men rather than the will of God. Acts 4: No Other Name

John 12:19 Seeing the Future

I Kings 19:4-8 Divine Food

Mark 9 Tribalism

Jesus said that those who are not against Him are for Him, and cautioned against allowing loyalty to a group cancel the kindness or respect we owe to others. St. John’s Board of Evangelism is inviting you to celebrate 14 years of Martin Luther’s Evening Prayer at a fund-raising dinner SUNDAY, OCTOBER 22, from 5pm to 7pm at St. John’s, Taylor. Invitation cards (pictured above) are available for any who would like to use them to invite friends or family.

We are asking $25 per plate for a German-themed dinner we call MARTIN LUTHER’S EVENING SUPPER. There will be two or three entrees and sides, a brief program at 6:20pm which will include a report on the ministry, remarks from one or two guests, a little singing, and a closing prayer.

Luke 4: The Temptation of Christ

Surprisingly, if Christ had yielded He would not have sinned, for as God He was not subject to the Law as humans are. Matthew 17: Transfiguration of Christ

Matthew 21: "Good Faith"

The Lord gives us an example of how to deal those who do not deal with us in good faith. The priests and elders asked Jesus by what authority He taught and healed. The Lord asked them about their view of John's baptism, and when they refused to answer, He said no to answering their question. At the same time, we ARE to deal with others sincerely, honestly, and forthrightly. Luke 2: Bris

On the eighth day after His birth Christ was circumcised and received the name "Jesus" (which means "savior"). Thus, New Year's Day is celebrated in many churches as the Name Day of Christ, and fittingly so. But there is deep meaning to the circumcision of the Christ Child: this is the first instance of His shedding blood for sin, and this when He who gave the Law (Torah) as God is put under the Law as man in the Bris or ceremony of circumcision. Dr. Zeile points out that this shows that CHrist's whole life, and not just its climax on the cross, is the sacrifice for our sin. Mark 9: "Cut off My Hand?"

Matthew 2: Holy Innocents, Infant Martyrs

Luke 6 "Counterintuitive"

Psalm 110 "Sit Here at My Right Hand"

This sermon for Ascension Day discusses the Biblical meaning of of God's Right Hand, which is not the crude picture of God as a giant floating out in space, or even of God's right hand being a place "Away" from this earth. Rather, as Martin Luther pointed out (and many Christian teachers before him), God has no hand of flesh, but He has a hand of power, and this power is everywhere. Christ's ascension to the right hand is His taking the seat of power, enabling Him to promise "Lo, I am with you always/everywhere, even to the end of the world/age." It is therefore a celebration of Christ's enthronement as is brought out by the readings from Acts 1 and Mark 16, and the 5th Century hymn, "Hail Thee, Festival Day."

Matthew 13: Familiarity

Luke 21- Judgment Then and Now

Christ's discourse about the end times is perplexing- events we can date, like the destruction of the Jerusalem temple by the Romans in A.D.70, or the persecution of Christians are jumbled with the End of the world and Christ's own return to judge. An "epiphany" is a manifestation of a god, or one's experience of this. Christ was manifest as God at His Baptism when the Father spoke from the sky, at the wedding of Cana when He turned water into wine, and at the Transfiguration when Moses and Elijah appeared with Him on Mt. Tabor. But the first manifestation of Christ's divinity was the star that guided the wise men who brought Him gifts of tribute. Thus began God's outreach to the gentiles (non-Jews), and the nations have been bringing tribute ever since. St. Paul discloses this mystery hinted at but kept hidden in the Old Testament as God's desire to redeem all His fallen children through Christ.

Returning good for evil is often the means to overcome evil and change the heart of an enemy. If not, that enemy is shamed and embarrassed by your generosity. Christ has done so for the world, died and forgiven us. Will it change our hearts? Or merely make us who reject it feel burning coals?
