Meg Paradise has nothing against the Raleigh bar scene. Far from it! She was an enthusiastic participant in Raleigh's nightlife, but when she became pregnant, she gained a new perspective on what life without alcohol might look like. Meg went from a fear of missing out, to wondering if a healthier (but still fun) lifestyle was possible.

A lot of thinking and dreaming later, and she was developing spirit free-cocktails, serving them from a shack in a garden center.

Today we chat with Meg, from The Commons in the Wells Fargo building, about her journey that will now have her taking over the former Garland spot in downtown Raleigh!

Adrian Mangano, Skate Raleigh

What do you do with a future city park site that currently sits kind of as an empty parking lot? Enloe student Adrian Mangano had an idea: why not make it a skate park?

And that idea became Skate Raleigh, a venture to build a temporary skate park between Capital Boulevard and West Street on the future site of Smoky Hollow Park. The area has long been a hang out for skaters, in part because of the Endless Grind skate shop that's operated nearby on Peace Street since 1986.

Adrian tells us how the idea came about, how it became a reality, who some of the supporters are and more.

Jason DeGroff, Swing Racquet + Paddle

A little more than 5 years ago, Raleigh almost became home to the new USTA headquarters that eventually landed just outside Orlando. But the message was clear: Raleigh has a lot of people who spend a lot of time with racquets in their hands.

Now the Triangle is on the verge of getting a 45-acre racquet and paddle sports super park that includes facilities, food, different membership offerings (including courts for free public use), event space and sportstainment (TM) facility: Swing Racquet + Paddle.

In recent weeks, Swing has announced partnerships with Wilson, chef Fabio Viviani and tennis academy Good to Great. We talked to managing partner of Swing Jason DeGroff about these partnerships, which sports are included at Swing (and why), the design and the origin story of what will truly be a one of a kind facility in Raleigh.

Jonathan Melton, City Council member at-large

Jonathan Melton is serving in his second term as an at-large member of the Raleigh City Council, serving on the Economic Development & Innovation and Transportation & Transit Committees. He was inspired by seeing other young leaders run for and take office, and saw a need for the city to have more varying voices making decisions. And calling back on his time as an NC State student, he thinks people in Raleigh can and should have everything they need within walking distance.

We had a great conversation that touched on two big Raleigh topics: affordable housing and community engagement. Additionally he gave us some insight on what exactly a city council member does--and what the city council doesn't have the authority to do. We also touched on his work as a family law attorney and his kickball addiction (that, not surprisingly, is tied to another leadership story!)

We talked to him about the school's diverse student body and array of academic studies, its focus on immersive learning, the expansion of arts and athletic programs, the growth of the North Person and Seaboard neighborhoods, and how having daughters in college made him a better school president.

Ashley Campbell, Blanchard Community Law Clinic

Ashley Campbell grew up watching Perry Mason on TV, so it was no surprise that she followed her dream and became a lawyer. Along the way she discovered her passion: helping ensure everyone has access to representation in the justice system.

Now--after a decorated career in real estate law with Ragsdale Liggett--that passion is her singular focus as she leads the Blanchard Community Law Clinic, part of Campbell University's law school, where she also teaches. The clinic is where future attorneys help people in the community who may need help affording, accessing, and understanding the justice system. There services include, but aren't limited to, helping people expunge criminal records and restore suspended driver's licenses.

Ashley tells us all about the clinic, why being a member of the Wake County Bar is special and her quest to finish the Appalachian Trail.

Scott Dupree, Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance

Scott Dupree grew up watching and playing sports, now he brings sports to Wake County as the executive director of the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance. Sports are a major part of any city's tourism plan, and our area has a sterling reputation as event hosts.

We talked to Scott about the economic impact of sports in our area, the rise of e-sports, our areas venues (including soon-to-come and wish list items) and the developments around them, all of the great sports partners the GRSA works with, and what events we host and would like to host in the future.

Scott even stuck to the theme of the season by pointing out a water feature truly does make a city a more attractive host site for any event!

Marchell Adams-David, City Manager

As City Manager, Marchell Adams-David is responsible for a lot of employees (about 9,000) who serve a lot of people (about a half a million citizens, plus a few hundred thousand more who work and play here). So when she hires people to work for the City of Raleigh--she has one of three roles selected by the City Council, the rest are hired, directly or indirectly, by her--she looks for the one trait that she thinks is most important, and a trait you'll find in her: a love for the work of helping Raleigh be the best it can be.

We talked so Adams-David about what got her into public service as a career, about covid and not only what it means currently but moving forward for employers and employees, and she became the latest guest to tell us she dreams of a water feature in Raleigh. We can make this happen, people!

Rhett Fussell, Raleigh Area Land Trust

Rhett Fussell is a transportation engineer, but when he bought some real estate he realized something important: it's not that feasible for everyone to purchase real estate. That sent him down a path that eventually led to him becoming a founder and interim director of the Raleigh Area Land Trust. RALT is Wake County's first land trust; there are land trusts in several U.S. cities including Durham and Chapel Hill.

We learn about what land trusts are, how they work, and why they can be one piece of the affordable housing puzzle solution. Rhett also shares with us some information on RALT's land acquisition's, including and exciting project in southeast Raleigh in partnership with the city and Raleigh Raised Development.

Tinu Diver, Filmmaker "This Belongs To Us"

Tinu Diver is an attorney, writer, community activist and filmmaker who went from tinkering with a camera to make her first movie in elementary school in Maryland to being featured at the Sundance Film Festival. In between, she graduated from UNC's Creative Writing Program and UNC Law and pursued (and continues to pursue) a number of different interests, including a return to filmmaking.

She has done shorter films on the tradition of quilting and NC's Highway 98 and her current project is her biggest film yet. "This Belongs To Us" explores southern, Black, female craft beer brewers in the South and examines how a process that began in Africa became synonymous with white dudes. Eric Woodall, NC Theatre

Up until barely a week before North Carolina Theatre's "9 to 5" opened--its first large production since pandemic restrictions began in 2020--Eric Woodall, the show's director and NCT's Producing Artistic Director, hadn't even seen the faces of all the cast members, since they were still practicing in masks. The precautions, the long layoff, the "what ifs" of constantly testing waiting for results are all part of getting back to the stage. But they're balanced by an excitement and enthusiasm to be back to performing before live audiences.

Eric has seen the development of Raleigh's theater scene over 40 years and now has the extremely large but extremely fun task of selecting the shows, picking the cast and putting on the 6 yearly productions for NC Theatre's season. We talked with him about the larger Raleigh theatre scene, as well as what folks can expect with a return to shows for NCT and what it means to be a professional equity theatre.

Kristen Hess, HH Architecture

Kristen Hess didn't always knew she wanted to work in architecture, but she always knew she should be in charge. Once she discovered an architect is akin to being the conductor of a symphony--bringing out the best of all the various players to create a piece--she knew it was for her. And once she came to Raleigh to study design at N.C. State, she never left.

Now she leads a firm that is helping shape what our city and state (and beyond) will look like for generations. The firm she founded and leads, HH Architecture, has worked on numerous projects involving museums, parks, schools, community colleges, government buildings and more, including the upcoming Dueling Dinosaurs exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences (which you can hear more about in our interview with Dr. Lindsay Zanno!). We specifically discuss three projects she has worked on--the North Carolina Zoo, the State Farmers Market and the N.C. State Fairground--that are quintessential to life in this state.

Hess has been a Marshall and Eisenhower Fellow, allowing her to broaden her contacts and knowledge, and she uses those experiences not only in her work, but in giving back to her community. She serves on the Greater Raleigh Chamber Executive Committee, the Governor’s Council on Historically Underutilized Businesses, as well as the Board of Directors for the Girl Scouts of North Carolina Coastal Pines.

As with any business venture, when deciding how to approach a project developers have to think about whether or not it's profitable. Gordon Grubb and his team almost always have a second, maybe equally as important issue to ponder: what will their neighbors think?

When Grubb left running his family business to start Grubb Ventures in the early 2000s, he did so in part to focus on projects that were close to home. Among the benefits were more time to spend with his family (and whatever handful of professional and philanthropic boards he is serving on at any given time), but it had also helped him develop a reputation as one of the best developers in the Triangle. His area of expertise is the area.

We talked to Gordon about projects at Glenwood Place, on Oberlin Road, and the Atlantic/Whitaker Mill area, asked him about the hot topic of affordable housing and even found out what famous Raleighite got him to join the Peloton movement!

When a pivot during college sent him on a track from studying political science to broadcast journalism, Aaron Thomas already had an idea of where the best place to be a TV reporter might be: at WRAL, the local news station he grew up watching. Having now been a reporter at a few other local new stations outside of North Carolina, Thomas now has an even greater appreciation for the Triangle market he gets to cover.

We talked to him about the journey to television, where Raleigh ranks as a place to be a news reporter and what a year of covering protests and pandemic events--all while adapting to safety precautions that kept him out of studio and away from photographers--and what the morale is in the news industry these days. We also asked about the best ways to eat thin mints and where social media fits in his work-life balance. Aaron is such a positive, upbeat spirit--it's hard not to come away from a conversation with him smiling!

Sumit Vohra, Lonerider Beer

Sumit Vohra would likely be successful at whatever business he chose to run--he's smart, hard-working, dedicated to his community and philanthropic. So he chose beer. Or maybe it chose him. What began as a hobby became a side project when he was still working in the tech world. And eventually that side project became today's Lonerider: a Raleigh brewery with 3 locations in the Triangle (and recently announced plans for a 4th) and a multi-state distributorship.

We talked about to Sumit about naming beers, what the term "craft beer" even means the days, and what Raleigh can do for small businesses. And we talked about the newest Lonerider location in Five Points, their first to feature in-house food ("the best grilled cheese in the state," says Vohra). Carly Jones, Program Director at N.C. Arts Council; Performer

As a child, you could find Carly Jones pretending she was on Star Search (playing the role of both host and contestant), so it's no surprise that she ended up as a performer. She's played to international audiences and still performs music, theatre and opera on stages across the Triangle and beyond.

Later came the realization that she is not just passionate about performing, but about the arts themselves--their power to deliver messages, strengthen communities and influence society. That's how she found herself drawn to the work of the North Carolina Arts Council--which supports and grows all kinds of art and artists across the state--and why she calls herself and 'artivist', a mash-up of "activist" and "artist".

We talked to Carly about her journey as a performer and the work of the Arts Council, discussed the local Raleigh theatre scene and of course hit on what the pandemic has done to the arts.

You can see Carly performing RIGHT NOW as part of the "Our Stage, Your Screen" series being put on by Seed Art Share as a way to continue to bring theatre to audiences via Zoom performances. She'll also be a featured speaker at Walter Magazine's WINi Summit on February 21st.

Mike Maniscalco, Carolina Hurricanes play by play voice

Mike Maniscalco grew up and went to college in Buffalo, New York in a time when the Carolina Hurricanes didn’t even exist. His first visit to Raleigh was to see a hockey game....as a fan of the Canes' opponent. But a radio job made him a full-time Raleigh resident, followed by a move to the TV side reporting for the Hurricanes, and now he has become only the second person to call Canes games full-time for television (the T V broadcasts are also simulcast on radio).

We asked Mike about his career, whether working in sports makes it less fun to be a fan, and if Raleigh is a good sports town when we caught up with him early in the Canes shortened 2021 season.

Dr. Lindsay Zanno, Head of Paleontology NC Museum of Natural Sciences

Dr. Lindsay Zanno is the Head of Paleontology at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and an associate research professor in biological sciences at N.C. State University. She's also as passionate about educating the public on the scientific process and instilling trust in the people and institutions who test and research as she is her own chosen field of paleontology.

You can sense her excitement for her work when she describes the museum's upcoming "Dueling Dinosaurs" exhibit (scheduled to open in 2022) that will not only teach visitors about dinosaurs and dino fossils, but allow people to experience and participate in the process of learning and discovering information along side researchers and technicians.

We spoke with Dr. Zanno about her career, the exhibit, naming dinosaurs and life at a dig site. She even humored us by answering some silly questions about how hard it might be to make Jurrasic Park a reality.

Thomas Sayre, artist and co-founder of Clearscapes, Part 1

If someone asked you to close your eyes and picture Raleigh, there's a pretty good chance Thomas Sayre will be involved in the image your mind conjures up. Maybe it's the Shimmer Wall on the back of the Raleigh Convention Center. Perhaps Gyre (read: the rings) out at the North Carolina Museum of Art. Cassandra Deck-Brown, Raleigh Police Chief

Did Cassandra Deck-Brown believe she would ascend to the role of Chief when she first joined the Raleigh Police Department in 1987? Not necessarily. But she certainly didn't rule out that possibility, a show of confidence she flashed in her first interview to join the department. In 2013 she became the first Black woman to attain the role of Raleigh Police Chief, yet another in a long line of trailblazing positions she assumed within the department.

Of course, 2020 has been a year like no other starting with a pandemic that altered every police operation and continuing with protests that have made for some tense moments in several cities across the country, including Raleigh. We talked to Chief Deck-Brown not only about 2020, but growing up in Franklin County, what makes a good police chief, the sheer size and scope of the department, her spirituality, and much more.

David Menconi, Music Writer/Critic

Just like it's hard to study any kind of music in American history without finding some tie to North Carolina, it's hard to have followed any kind of music in North Carolina over the past 3 decades and not found some tie to David Menconi. He was a music writer and critic for the News & Observer for almost 30 years, and in that time became as much a part of the music scene as he was a chronicler. Beyond his main gig, he found bylines in many major publications and college alumni mags, stacked up multiple NC Press Association awards, and in 2019 was given the honor of serving as Piedmont Laureate.

All of this made him the perfect person to author Step It Up & Go: The Story of North Carolina Popular Music. (Surely you can order it online, but he'd prefer you buy it from a local bookstore). We talked to David about coming to Raleigh, learning the music of the region, and what makes Raleigh a great music city.

Jessica McDonald, NC Courage/USWNT forward

She's an athlete. A mother. A Black woman. A World Cup Champion. As Jess McDonald puts it: "I fall under a huge amount of categories." And all those categories have been highlighted in the past year and a half of competition, where McDonald has done everything from celebrate her sport's highest achievements with her son, to kneeling during the national anthem with her teammates and opponents as sports resumed during a pandemic.

What she's best known for is being a really, really good soccer player--but we tried to cover all the things that make up who McDonald is, including a time she considered giving up the game. Though McDonald, like several of her NC Courage teammates, has opted out of the NWSL's short fall season, she remains one of the faces of the franchise.

Ashton and Hayes also bring back their "interesting things" segment to touch on some positive news in what has been a tough year for downtown businesses. In addition, they try to talk through some of the issues surrounding the awakening the restaurant industry--as well as others--are going through in Raleigh and other places.

Damon Circosta (Part 1) Chair, NC Board of Elections

Be honest: prior to the last couple years, did you know who was on your North Carolina State Board of Elections? (You don't have to confess it out loud.) For a number of reasons, voting, elections, ballots and how they're all organized and run have come under higher scrutiny than any time we can remember.

Someone who has thought about these issues for a number of years now--even prior to holding an official position--is Damon Circosta, the current Chair of the NC Board of Elections, a guy who was thinking about free and fair elections all the way back in college in Arizona. In our interview, he breaks down some important dates and details of this fall's election process, and hopefully makes you feel even better about North Carolina's process being safe, secure and fair. The democratic process should never be taken for granted, but there's also a lot of unnecessary noise that Damon and others hope can get tuned out as we try to accomplish the important task of holding an election during a pandemic.

Damon is also the executive director of the A.J. Fletcher Foundation, but we opted to do an entire episode looking at his role on the Board of Elections, and will bring you part two of the interview in a future episode this season.

Stormie Forte, Raleigh City Council District D Representative

When a resignation created a vacancy on the Raleigh City Council, 54 individuals applied to be the next District D representative. The field was narrowed to a handful of folks who participated in public interviews conducted by the sitting council members, and of that group Raleigh native Stormie Forte was chosen to join the council. Once sworn in, she became the first Black female city council member in Raleigh's history.

While this role is new for Forte, a lawyer who works at Obsidian Consulting Services and also hosts a radio show, getting involved in any and all things Raleigh is something she's been doing for a while. Whether it's volunteering at Hopscotch or the Rex Open or sitting on a non-profit board like the North Carolina Science Museum Friends or the Clarence Lightner Achiever's, Forte rarely finds herself on the sidelines. We talked to her about her decision to run, the process, and what she wants to get started on now that she is officially a member of Raleigh's city council.

Robyn Tomlin doesn't speak for all journalists, but as the President and Editor of the News & Observer and the Durham Herald-Sun and the southeast regional editor for nearly a dozen McClatchy newspapers, she can take the temperature of a newsroom.

We talked to her about her role as editor, how she got started in journalism, the grim reality of the economics of newspapers, as well as the record number of people who are reading her writers' content these days. We discuss how local reporting is a public good, but why it would be tricky to be publicly funded. And we talk about how current events like the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter Movement are impacting the newspaper industry as they cover them.

Mickey Fearn is a delightfully charming man to talk to...but that's not why people keep calling him. Cities, governments, parks departments and college administrators all want to know what secrets Mickey has about solving community engagement and re-thinking city and park planning to reflect the needs and desires of the whole community. The latest to make him an offer is the city of Raleigh, who has tasked Mickey with helping them figure out how to best engage its citizens. He is clear about one thing: he will not be offering easy-bake solutions. He will be leading conversations, listening to folks from all different levels of leadership, and helping Raleigh discover for itself what the best next step is.

Fearn has worked for the city of Seattle, the National Parks Service, and most recently has served as a Professor of Practice for N.C. State's School of Natural Resources. He has served on the city, state and national government level working with parks and improving communities.

Greear Webb, Young Americans Protest (YAP!)

Greear Webb is a rising sophomore in the Morehead-Cain program at UNC-Chapel Hill. A year ago he graduated from Sanderson High School and at that time he had already organized a Town Hall on gun violence in the wake of the Parkland, Florida School school shooting. This led to the founding of his organization YAP! (Young Americans Protest).

Now, in addition to continuing his studies online while preparing for an amended fall college schedule, he's using those same skills and contacts he began in high school to be one of the leading voices of the recent and continuing protests in downtown Raleigh that began the week of George Floyd's killing in Minneapolis. He has helped lead Raleigh Demands Justice, one of several groups helping to demonstrated in and around downtown.

We talked to Greear about being a college kid and being an activist and community leader all at the same time.

Oscar Carmona, Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources

Oscar Carmona started in January as the Director of Raleigh's Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department after a long career working in parks in Texas. He has a passion not only for parks, but for local governments that have the flexibility and budgets to do big things with their park systems. We talked to him about learning his way around the Raleigh Parks system, how the city's parks are adjusting to the pandemic and how bird watching drew him to parks at a young age.

Before the interview, we talk some more closings and cancellations, ponder what increased outdoor dining might look like for Raleigh's restaurants, and wonder if the sunflowers might show up somewhere besides Dix Park this summer.

Jackie Craig, The Green Chair Project

If you're a foster child aging out of care, a newly arrived immigrant, or a domestic abuse victim fleeing a bad situation, finding a home can be hard enough. Filling that home is a whole different challenge. Seeing this need in our community, Jackie Craig helped found The Green Chair Project, which take donations of all kinds of furniture and housewares and provides all kinds of home furnishings for our neighbors with all kinds of life situations.

Ten years after its birth, Jackie remains the executive director as it has grown into a beautiful showroom on Capital Boulevard where clients shop to build their homes. It's also the headquarters for one of Green Chair's most ambitious goals: to find a bed for every child in Wake County, too many of whom sleep on a couch, share a bed, or sleep on the floor.

Of course, we also talk to Jackie about how she and The Green Chair Project are adjusting to the pandemic (hint: they haven't stopped finding creative ways to fulfill their mission).

Eric Dorfman, North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences

Eric Dorfman is an author, a professor, a scientist and in early 2020 he became the Director and CEO of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. He also sits on the Executive Board of the International Council of Museums. He has previously served as the Director of Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Museum of Natural History, and he has studied and worked and lived in California, Australia and New Zealand as well. We talk to Eric about what drew him to the job and the city of Raleigh, and a range of topics from dinosaurs to opera and, of course, the current state of museums in a pandemic, as well as the future of museums.

Erin Terry, Eyes Up Here Comedy

When Erin Terry started doing open mic stand-up comedy just before turning 30, she noticed one thing quickly and clearly: there wasn't enough space for women. So Erin consulted with some other female comics, and decided she was going to carve out her own space. What started in 2015 as one show, and then a once-a-month show, and then more shows, eventually became Eyes Up Here, the comedy enterprise that has given a mic to over 200 women comics, and stages multiple regular shows across the Triangle and in places like Asheville and Wilmington. Eyes Up Here also helps mentor and encourage performers--they hold workshops and classes outside of their performances.

Erin is a blast to talk to not only because she's funny, but because she has a passion for Raleigh as much as she has a passion for comedy. As she says in the interview, "Laughter is not in limited supply. The laughs here counts just as much as they do in New York or LA or Atlanta or Chicago....this is my home."

Sabrina Goode and Emma Liles talk Oberlin Village and Latta University Historic Park

Sabrina Goode and Emma Liles are both working to preserve an important and often overlooked part of Raleigh's history: Oberlin Village, a community of African Americans near Oberlin Road that flourished after the Civil War, and Latta University, a school whose campus was at the center of the community.

Goode is the Executive Director of the Friends of Oberlin Village, which works to preserve and educate people about the history of Oberlin Village. Miles is a City of Raleigh Park Planner, and is overseeing the planning of Latta University Historic Park. We talked to both women about the history and future of Oberlin Village.

Around the time we should have been assessing Mary-Ann Baldwin's first 100 days on the job as Raleigh's mayor, everything changed as the novel coronavirus and COVID-19 became the biggest issue locally and globally.

Mayor Baldwin was kind enough to join us again (our first repeat guest!), this time to talk specifically about how the coronavirus is affecting life in Raleigh, where we stand currently, and planning for re-opening and recovery. Baldwin talks very soberingly about things like a crushing wave of rent payments and a difficult road for small businesses, but she also talks about very real hope she has for the city and its ability to regain the momentum it was riding before this pandemic hit.

After getting out of TV and having worked with a few different publications in North Carolina, in 2015 she decided the time was perfect to create that magazine for Raleigh that she would have loved to have picked up as a new-to-Raleigh television producer: Raleigh Magazine.

Five years later and Raleigh Magazine's mix of short, informative stories on what's happening and longer features on people doing interesting things in the city and its hybrid distribution model--subscriptions plus pick-up options--have made in a success story at a time when other print publications have struggled. We talked to Gina about starting a magazine, the experiences that prepared her for it, and what she's learned as a publisher.

Nancy McFarlane, Raleigh's 35th Mayor

Nancy McFarlane served four terms as Raleigh's mayor from 2011-2019. It's safe to say that when she first arrived in Raleigh she had no idea she'd end up being the face of the city--in fact, she wasn't even sure she wanted to stay! But stay she did, and she became active in her neighborhood and her children's schools (all while starting her own business), and then her friends' political campaigns and, eventually, her own.

She sat down to talk with Podcast Raleigh about what led her into public service, the challenges of being the new person on the City Council, adjusting to life as mayor, the acquisition of Dix Park, her vision for Raleigh's future and a host of other things.

Rafael Baptista likes to help people. He does it in his "free" time by volunteering for the Red Cross and working as a collegiate soccer official. One way his office has achieved this goal is creating the Impact Partner Grant Program which recently announced its second wave of recipients. LeVelle Moton, NC Central Men's Basketball Coach

LeVelle Moton recently had his jersey retired by NC Central University, where he starred as a basketball player and is now the head coach. After leading his team to 3 NCAA Tournaments, he is one of the most recognized coaches at (and advocates for) an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities). His team was recently featured in a great ESPN story on the not-so-glorious road on the life for smaller athletic programs. His phone includes numbers to some of the best basketball players in the world--LeBron James, Chris Paul, etc--with whom he regularly communicates. We could talk basketball with him for hours.

So, of course, we covered NONE of those things in our hour-long chat with him. Instead, we listened to LeVelle tell his inspirational, and sometimes horrifying, story of how he came to Raleigh and grew up on the east side of town. Whether he was at the Boys and Girls Club, which his mother approved of, or at the small park near his house, which she decidedly did NOT approve of, he was learning from his environment and also learning how to move beyond it. We talked with LeVelle about his life experience and how that shaped who he is and how he's chosen to give back to his community.

When Adam and Lacie Lindstaedt set out on a tour of potential cities to set up their dream business--a music venue--the first place they went when visiting Raleigh was The Pour House, downtown on Blount Street. Nick Neptune may blush when we read him the bio his creative friends cooked up to promote his services for the Good Times Assurance Company, but after sitting with him for an hour we can definitely confirm when it says "he is not a man--he is an event."

Much of the focus of the interview is on Transfer Company Food Hall and its surrounding property, which Nick oversees as General Manager. As Transfer prepares to celebrate its 1st anniversary, we learned some about the site's history, how Transfer Co. came together, and what the project will look like when fully complete. Ira David Wood III is the founder and Executive Director of Theatre in the Park, which puts on several theatrical performances each season. A native North Carolinian, Wood graduated from the North Carolina School of the Arts and spent time in the cast of The Lost Colony (a production he has directed the past few summers) before coming to Raleigh for a state government job in arts.

Wood and Raleigh formed a long-term relationship, culminating in his original musical comedy adaptation of A Christmas Carol--the show that will have its 45th annual run this December at the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts and the DPAC, and that has become a staple of Christmas in Raleigh.

We talked to Wood about the beginnings of Theatre in the Park and A Christmas Carol, theatre and the arts in Raleigh, his legacy as Raleigh's Scrooge, and what his wonderfully creative mind is working on next.

PNC Arena is celebrating its 20th birthday this year--the Carolina Hurricanes opened the building in October of 1999 and N.C. State basketball had its first game in the then Raleigh Entertainment and Sports Arena a few weeks later. Before the building was even constructed, the NC General Assembly created the Centennial Authority to oversee the facility.

We chatted with two members of the Authority: Jeff Merritt, who was working for the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce during the early stages of the planning and for the last decade plus has been the Executive Director of the Authority, and Perry Safran, an attorney and former Raleigh City Councilor who has served on the Authority since its inception. we talked about the history of the building, some of the ways its funding and organizational structure is unique, and what's in store for the arena's future.

One of the biggest--if not the biggest--changes in Raleigh in the past 2+ decades has been the growth of downtown as a place to live, work and play. Bill King joins us in this episode to talk about the Downtown Raleigh Alliance (DRA) and what role it plays in the building, sustaining, and growth of Raleigh's now vibrant downtown.

He explains some of the services the DRA provides--like business recruitment, marketing and the Downtown Raleigh Ambassadors program--and explains funding and membership for the non-profit organization. Gregg Warren is the President and Yvette Holmes the Vice President of Resource Development and Partnerships for DHIC, whose motto is "Home to Opportunity." Gregg will be retiring as DHIC President next summer. Emily Sexton of The Flourish Market

People might raise an eyebrow to learn Emily Sexton went from a career that included lavish dinners on her employer's expense account to running a fashion business from a truck, but around age 30 she knew she wanted to make a change, both in her work and in the world. Is Raleigh a good city for music? It's one of the questions we asked Nathan Price, director of the Hopscotch Music Festival coming up September 5th-7th in downtown Raleigh. If the answer is "yes" (spoiler alert: he thinks it is) then there's no doubt that Hopscotch is one of the big reasons.

We talked to Nathan about how he went from working in real estate to booking bands for the event, to eventually becoming its full time director, plus he shares some of what's in store for Hopscotch 10, some of the history, and some of the process behind filling out a lineup that includes over 120 acts.

Brooks Bell, entrepreneur turned colon cancer awareness activist

After failing at her first try at being an entrepreneur--a paint company that was more an excuse to stay in North Carolina during a summer in college--Brooks Bell has succeeded in seemingly everything else she has done, from catching AOL's attention in the early days of internet marketing to founding her own company, Brooks Bell, as well as starting HQ Raleigh and ThinkRaleigh.

Now she has a new calling: raising awareness about colon cancer--a diagnosis she received in the past year--and letting people know that it is a fast growing problem, trending younger, but also one that can be fairly easily screened. We talked to Brooks about her career, her cancer, and her relationship with her husband Jesse Lipson.

Pat Price, Sir Walter Miler

Pat Price may never break a 4-minute mile, but as one of the people who helped create and put on the annual Sir Walter Miler, he's aided a lot of other runners in accomplishing that goal (and the 4:30 barrier for females) and made it possible for a lot more fast miles to be run on North Carolina soil than ever before.

This year's event is Friday, August 2nd and as usual it will feature a lot of fast runners and a lot of spectators on (not near, ON) the track for the premier events. It will also feature local running clubs, and a race you likely won't see anywhere else (but you have to listen to find out what it is...or just go their web site).

Lindsey Lughes, Executive Director of the LBGT Center of Raleigh

Growing up, Lindsey Lughes--a cisgender, queer woman--had no knowledge of any LGBTQ+ groups or activity in Raleigh. She never thought she could exist honestly and openly as an LGBTQ+ person in Raleigh. Now, a few decades and several progressive steps later, she is the executive director of the LBGT Center of Raleigh.

We talked to Lindsey about what the LGBT Center does, Raleigh's first Pride Month, how Raleigh rates as an LGBTQ+ city and more, and what kept her tied to Raleigh and eventually brought her back here from Pennsylvania.

We chatted with Charlie about growing up in restaurants, how music (like food) can transcend different groups, and why there is no queso dip on the menu at his restaurants.

Danya Perry, Equitable Economic Development Manager for Wake County Economic Development

Danya Perry has some great stories about his aspirations as a juggler and why he thought William "Refrigerator" Perry was his uncle. Elizabeth Doran, Executive Director of NC Theatre

Businesswoman, artist, mother, Janis Joplin fan...and the 4th executive director in NC Theatre's 32-year history. All of these things describe Elizabeth Doran, though it's clear she wouldn't want to be defined by one singular term. She is on a mission to deliver the kind of theatre that Raleigh wants and needs, and she's devoted a lot of time and a lot of her life to figuring out exactly what that is. It could be popular, well-loved Broadway shows and it could also include performances and messaging the audience never saw coming.

NC Theatre's production of 'Annie' runs this July and we talked to Doran about that, other shows coming up, and a whole lot of other things regarding her role and Raleigh's theatre scene.

Three years ago Steve Malik made bold statements about a downtown soccer stadium and bringing MLS to Raleigh. This time around the location is different, the message is tweaked a little, and the latest plans and drawings are about much more than a soccer stadium.

We were fortunate to sit down with Malik, the NCFC owner and chairman, as he was officially announcing plans for Downtown South, a new development near I40/440 and S. Saunders Street, just south of downtown Raleigh (hence the name). He shared plans, numbers, data, and things he's learned in becoming a sports owner and, now, a land developer.

The only thing that might have made a conversation with Niall Hanley more perfect is if we had held it in one of his bars after closing time. And we would have had a lot of bars/restaurants to choose from. The native Irishman turned Raleighite (by way of Boston and, briefly, Durham) was one of the first on the scene in what was then the "new" Glenwood South, and continues to have a strong presence there. Whether he's re-creating the pub he grew up with back home with the Hibernian or more modern concepts like Morgan Street Food Hall (and a soon to be gin joint nearby), he seems to lack the ability to STOP starting new projects.

We talked to Niall about starting restaurants, how well Raleigh has marketed himself and a BIG idea for getting people around (think flying buses). [one small note/warning: there is nothing graphic in this episode, but there is a bit of what we'll call "bar language"]

Runner, husband, father, beer-lover, City of Oaks native, downtown Raleigh advocate, anti-gerrymanderer, real estate mogul, former Mayor's son, problem solver.......David Meeker wears a lot of hats, so many it can sometimes be tricky to figure out EXACTLY what he does. We tried, starting with what it was like to be in high school when his dad was elected mayor of Raleigh and moving through his vision for Trophy and Raleigh in the next few decades.

We talked about growing small businesses and the challenges he and his partners faced (spoiler: according to Meeker all the success is credit to his partners, all the setbacks were his fault), what Raleigh needs from its leaders and how--even when it's fun and you're succeeding--it can be really, really hard work.

Kia Baker, Executive Director of Southeast Raleigh Promise

One of the most exciting development projects in Raleigh currently is the Beacon Site off Rock Quarry Road, that will soon be home to a Wake County elementary school, a new YMCA, affordable housing, and more resources for the nearby neighborhoods. It's also the first phase of Southeast Raleigh Promise, which aims to make sure Raleigh's growth and development includes ALL of its communities and citizens.

Leading Southeast Raleigh Promise is Executive Director Kia Baker, a Raleigh native who is now tasked with heading an organization that helps bring the right players and institutions together in the community to ensure the best chance of success for all.

We talked to Kia about how she came to this work and this organization specifically, her thoughts on the New York Times article highlighting gentrification in East Raleigh (she is quoted in the story), and what else she does when she's not shaping our community's future.

Before the interview, Ashton and Hayes discuss some new restaurants that have opened (or will soon), applaud the end of the Carolina Hurricanes season (because we're proud of the team AND happy to be rid of Boston media), and discuss our #Top3Raleigh BURGERS.

Thorne Daubenspeck, Executive Director of Band Together

Thorne Daubenspeck wasn't born in Raleigh, but based on the circumstances that brought him here and how his family (married a Raleigh girl) and career (runs a fun, high profle Raleigh non-profit) turned out, you would probably agree he was meant to be here.

We talked to Daubenspeck about the music and entertainment industry that he cut his teeth in, how Band Together originally came about, and what their plans are for this year's concert and the future of the event.

Torry Holt of Holt Brothers Construction

If you really press him about it, Torry Holt will admit he misses the game of football--there's not much that can replace winning a Super Bowl, entertaining packed stadiums, or out-running some of the best athletes in the world.

But you wouldn't know it by looking talking to him, or looking at his schedule. Holt, along with his brother, stays busy heading up Holt Brothers Construction and running events for their Holt Brothers Foundation. He is excited about the future of Raleigh--the city he says he never left even as he was playing professionally in St. Louis and other cities--and it comes through when he talks about everything from the NC Courage, to Dix Park, to his foundation's Flag Football tournament.

In addition to talking to Torry, Ashton and Hayes discuss Raleigh being in headlines at the James Beard awards (congrats, Ashley Christensen!) and the New York Times, and we share our #Top3Raleigh Brunch spots.

John Kane of Kane Realty

One of the goal's of the podcast is to talk to people who will help build Raleigh's future. John Kane is doing that quite literally as his company has spearheaded some of Raleigh's biggest development projects of the past few decades, including the "recycling" (a term he prefers) of North Hills and, more recently, The Dillon and Stanhope developments near downtown Raleigh.

Kane is also a North Carolina native, a husband to Willa and father to 4 children, a golfer and devoted work-out guy, and serves on myriad boards and has garnered numerous awards, including the News & Observer's Tar Heel of the Year in 2016. We talked to him about a variety of subjects--business, personal, and philosophical--most of them pertaining to his experience helping to build a better Raleigh.

On Thursday, April 25th Dr. Paulette Dillard will be officially inaugurated as the 18th President of Shaw University, even though she's been leading the school in that role for over a year.

We spoke to Dr. Dillard about what led her to a career in science and academia, and what brought her to Raleigh specifically. We also discussed Shaw's future and how it is linked with the growth and change in downtown Raleigh. We also had to ask how she landed Peabo Bryson at her inauguration festivities!

It's Podcast Raleigh!

What is Podcast Raleigh? Well, for now, it's two people from Raleigh (Ashton and Hayes) talking about Raleigh with people who know what's going on in Raleigh. The format, the length, the content are ALL subject to change as we grow this thing, and we'd love your feedback on what you find informative and entertaining.

In our debut episode, we are honored to be joined by Kate Pearce. Her official title we address in the podcast, but basically she was tasked with leading the process of planning the future of Dix Park. We talk about how she went from being a soccer playing Texsippian to someone whose impact on Raleigh will be seen for generations.

Before Kate joins (18-minute mark) Ashton and I talk about what's interesting in Raleigh right now, including the word that we'll have a new mayor, the Dreamville Festival a site has been named for the Downtown Entertainment Center and, of course, grocery stores. We also name our top 3 music venues in Raleigh.
