#108 - Many airlines will offer more flights again in the next few weeks. In order to protect crews and passengers, almost all passengers have to wear a mask. Depending on the airline, you have to keep the masks on all times during the flight. The only exception is eating and drinking.

The expansion of the flight plan also goes hand in hand with border openings. Mostly only business trips are allowed or if you have relatives / are resident in the country. Some countries are also opening to tourist travel.

#107 - Lufthansa Miles & More just announced COVID-19 goodwill rules. At first the changes for 2021 are postponed by one year and will start in 2022. e-Voucher will be extended until end of 2021, but only if they would expire 2020.

Frequent Traveller, Senator or HON Circle with a status expiration 02/21 will get 1 yer extension. So you are keeping your status until 02/22. All the others get nothing until now. Maybe Lufthansa will reconsider.

Eurowings will start flying soon and published the first destinations. Mostly Mallorca is the first destination for all the Eurowings Airports in Germany.

Brussels Airlines published their plan to survive the crises. 25% less staff and less aircraft basically.

Lufthansa Group 160 aircraft and 106 destinations in June

#101 - Starting in June, the airlines Lufthansa, Eurowings and SWISS will fly significantly more destinations in Germany and Europe with monthly restart flight schedules than in the past few weeks. This ends the return flight schedules on May 31.

A total of 106 destinations will be served in June
Mallorca, Sylt and Crete back in the program

But no word on Brussels or Austrian.

But mostly they are losing. 1 billion trough fuel hedging, 800 Million per month and 1.8 billion that are only some numbers they mentioned. The government bail out is still not clear. Only saving was the 760.000 euro for the online annual general meeting.

Mileage bargains cannot be rebooked
No stopovers or open jaws are possible
For European flights, an intra-German connecting flight and for intercontinental flights, an intra-European or intra-German connecting flight, which must take place on the same day are included

Austrian Airlines restart after COVID-19

#84- Right now the fleet of Austrian Airlines is grounded and since 18th of march there is no regularly scheduled flight. They expect to get back to pre COVID-19 levels end 2023 earliest. So far they see for 2020 an demand for 25%-50% and in 2021 at most 75% of pre COVID-19 demand.

Austrian will retire all 18 of their Dash 8 turboprops, a process that was started in 2019, all seven Airbus A319sand three of six Boeing 767-300s. The registrations are OE-LAT, OE-LAW and OE-LAX.

Lufthansa Miles & More is there no exception and stopped the reimbursement of award tickets until further notice. When you read their email, you will read that they know that they are legally obliged to do so. So they ignore the law here again.

#71 - All parts of the economy got under pressure due to the corona virus or by the measures the governments took world wide. Airlines are in trouble and asking for a bail out. As subsidies are forbidden, there have to be found other ways. Job guarantees, stake in the companies, in the case of Austria making sure that the money is only used for Austrian Airlines and not to help the mother company Lufthansa in Germany. That are some of the demands. What do you think? Is it right? Or should the government demand even more?

The winner was PGL, the mother company of LOT Polish Airlines. 15th of April is the day when PGL or Condor have to pay the 380 million back, but PGL claims that Condor have to pay the consulting cost for the acquisition. They are doing it because of having not to pay the penalty for not taking over the airline in the end.

Lufthansa Group decides on first restructuring package

#68 - The Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG does not expect the aviation industry to return to pre-coronavirus crisis levels very quickly. According to its assessment, it will take months until the global travel restrictions are completely lifted and years until the worldwide demand for air travel returns to pre-crisis levels. Based on this evaluation, today the Executive Board has decided on extensive measures to reduce the capacity of flight operations and administration long term.

Significant decline in air travel also expected for period after the Coronavirus crisis
Suspension of aircraft leads to the first permanent capacity reduction
The inevitable downsizing of flight operations shall be implemented in a socially responsible manner, among other things, through collective employment models

At Lufthansa, six Airbus A380s and seven A340-600s as well as five Boeing 747-400s will be permanently decommissioned. In addition, eleven Airbus A320s will be withdrawn from short-haul operations.

The six A380s were already scheduled for sale to Airbus in 2022. The decision to phase out seven A340-600s and five Boeing 747-400s was taken based on the environmental as well as economic disadvantages of these aircraft types. With this decision, Lufthansa will be reducing capacity at its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich.

Airbus A220 a better option than Boeing 737MAX

#67 - Some of the Boeing 737MAX orders are getting canceled and due to the long waiting times the Airbus A320 series is no option. It’s a bigger plane and would be more appropriate to rival the A320 rather than the A220. Airbus is investing 500 million and more into the development of longer versions.

When comparing the 737 Max 8 and the A220 the Boeing option is winning. It can hold up to 210 passengers, flies a little further approx. 1000km in range than the A220 but requires 7,000 more liters of fuel to do so. More cargo space is also available in the 737MAX. The A22 0 is cheaper to run… but the newer Boeing 737 max 8 may have enough extra passengers on board to justify the extra fuel.

Lufthansa Group COVID-19 schedule

#66 - The Lufthansa Group not only wants to make repatriation flights, but also some other flights. Austrian Airlines and Brussels no longer operate scheduled flights. One of the return flights of the Austrian was OS 1 a flight from Vienna to Sydney non stop. Only the return flight had a stop to refuel.

In addition to some flights within Germany and Europe, Lufthansa also flies intercontinental.

Points, Status and certificate extensions due to COVID-19

#65 - 2020 will be no nor year for travel and a lot of travelers cannot keep their status as they are not allowed to travel. That is very challenging for the loyalty schemes. Some have already presented solutions like Emirates Airlines. You have only to fly 80% of the required points you would in a normal year. Hyatt and others did extend existing status until 2022.

No trip - but vouchers instead of a refund

#64 - Trips are canceled, because they do not take place, there is "actually" a claim for reimbursement. Now comes the big but. So they should issue vouchers instead of cash. I understand that, of course, from a moral point of view, but I think that the law should not apply retrospectively. That is my biggest issue, but you get the money latest 1st of January 2022, if they company is still alive.

What is the alternative? Many employees in the travel industry are permanently losing their jobs and we can no longer find the selection that we got used to before the crisis. However, people who have lost their jobs also need the money, their money. It's a very difficult situation. Let's see if the airlines remember when we need goodwill as customers. The EU Commission protested at least against the solution of the German federal government.

Dr. Matthias Böse, a lawyer friend, may have a solution. "A possible solution could be an assignment of the current (or future) payment claim to a third party (sample at the end of this page). This can be a colleague, a friend or a relative, ideally it is a person who - should then be issued a personal voucher - will also make use of the voucher. " If the debtor does not comply, then a claim for damages arises, which is to be paid in cash. The whole article is here.

Condor Flugdienst - State owned soon?

#62 - After Thomas Cook went belly up, Condor was able with the help of a credit provided by the German government to survive. They have successfully search for a new owner and the white knight was PGL. PGL is the owner of LOT Polish Airlines and a state-owned company.

Every airline is hit by COVID-19 now and especially LOT is in difficult times. As they are trying to get out of the contract to buy Condor, the German government wants to take the shares and give Condor a chance to find a new owner.

COVID-19 EU passenger rights regulations

#60 - The European Commission commented on passenger rights yesterday and clarified them. There is usually compensation if the flight is canceled within 2 weeks, but the corona virus declares almost all flight cancellations to be “exceptional circumstances”.

By law it is not forbidden to recline the seat, except when the seat potentially can block the emergency exit. Some airlines like Ryanair, easyJet etc. did install seats that do not recline. #46 - 29 days in February means not only one day more. It has challenges for the aviation when it comes to statistics and IT. Statistics can be misleading and give wrong impressions as there is one day more to transport cargo and people.

Another incident at the baggage belt was funny at Düsseldorf Airport. 1200 suitcases could be not reunited immediately with their owner as the system did not accept the 29th as a date.

#44 - Eurowings is not famous for their service. The differentiation between SMART and BASIC got bigger now. The SMART rate is a hand luggage only and now they removed the free airport check in. Eurowings wants to charge 5 Euros per check in. When you book it in advance you get a 50% discount and just have to pay 2.50 Euro. You are only allowed to have a carry-on of 8kg in the size of 55x40x23cm and a smaller personal item.

This is definitely an enhancement with negative changes, but why does the marketing department always write this in way you get the feeling they give you a present?

"From March 2020, Eurowings will ask its BASIC customers to only check in online for their flight. This leads to significantly reduced queues at the airports, which in turn saves our customers time. BASIC passengers who would like to continue checking in at the airport can of course flexibly book this option in advance as an additional service."

#17 - The Lufthansa Miles & More Companion Award is one benefit of the Senator and HON Circle status. In my opinion it is one of the best ones. One of the best news is that this benefit will survive the changes in 2021. But what is the Lufthansa Miles & More Companion Award? Lufthansa Miles & More Companion Award reduces the amount of miles you need for your travel partner by 50%. Depending on the booking class the savings can be huge.

You can book the award for flights operated by Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, SWISS, Eurowings, Luxair, LOT Polish Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Croatia Airlines. There is no limit how often you can use Lufthansa Miles & More Companion Award, only your missing miles in the account can stop you.

In order to use Lufthansa Miles & More Companion Award both tickets have to be reward tickets and both passengers must be traveling on the same flight and booking class. Lufthansa Miles & More Companion Award means that the Senator or HON Circle and the companion have to travel together. The tickets can only be canceled together.

Fly Smart, Meilenschnäppchen (mileage bargains) and reward tickets for children cannot be used as Lufthansa Miles & More Companion Award.

Boeing 737MAX - Designed by Clowns

#16 - Scandals around the development of the Boeing 737MAX are not ending. When you think you have heard it all, then Boeing makes it worse. The gave over 100 emails to the government and revealed some disturbing conversations. "designed by clowns who are supervised by monkeys","looks like my Jedi trick did work","own stupidity" or just "Idiots". That are quo's that you could read in the mails. Boeing told airlines not to buy simulators, as authorities in the US, Canada, Europe, China, Malaysia and Argentina said that an app on iPad is enough for a 737NG pilot to fly a Boeing 737MAX.

Not only the language is disturbing, also that an airline was stopped to invest into safety. But we will see how Boeing is going to change corporate culture.

Lufthansa Miles & More Extend the validity of expiring miles

#15 - Lufthansa Miles & More has partnered with Loylogic and offers a way to extend the validity of miles. This is of course not for free and they charge approx. 1ct per mile. I did not check it, as I did not have any miles that expire. Anyways there are cheaper ways to avoid that Lufthansa Miles & More miles expire. Every status (Frequent Traveller, Senator or HON Circle) does the job or one of the many credit cards Lufthansa Miles 7 More offers with their partners in different countries. If you decide to take the offer and pay your miles will be valid for an other 36 month.

How it works

Login to Mileage Services by Loylogic with your Miles & More Service Card Number and PIN and accept the terms and conditions.
Your account details (Service Card Number, Name, E-Mail Address, and Expiring miles) will be transmitted to Loylogic and pre-filled in the relevant tasks.
Select the number of miles you wish to extend.
Use your credit/debit card to pay for the fees to extend the miles and to renew the validity of the expiring miles for at least 36 months.
In some cases, it may take up to 3 business days until the extended miles are on your account.
Extended miles are valid for at least 36 months from the date of purchase and, unless they have been used, expire at the end of the quarter.

Conditions of participation

Members must be over 18 years old to use Extend Miles
Members need to have a minimum amount of miles expiring in the current quarter to participate in the transaction.

Rules and Restrictions

Minimum qualifying transaction for Extend Miles is 500 miles.
Miles once extended and extend fees paid are non-refundable.
Mileage rates and other applicable fees may change over time.
Miles are extended for at least 36 months. If the extended miles are not redeemed for an award in the mileage account within 36 months of the event, they expire by the end of the next quarter, unless a longer deadline is announced through the Miles & More communication channels.
The date and amount of the expired miles will be indicated separately in the Miles & More account information or in the member’s individual online mileage account at least one quarter before the expiry date concerned.
To be able to use Extend Miles, you must have collected atleast one award mile from one of our partners, i.e. flight booking, WorldShop.

Airbus is the clear winner 2019

#11 - This year was no neck to neck race between Airbus and Boeing. The grounding of the 737MAX made a very one sided race, as Boeing had no realistic chance to win anymore. Airbus was in the strong beliefe to be behind Boeing in 2019. Not by many but clearly behind. The A320 series hat the most deliveries bey number with 646 aircraft. 863 aircraft was the total deliveries over all series from A220 to the A380. Because of the successful A320 series they want to increase the production to 63 aircrafts a month until mid 2021.

111 - A350 Series
8 - A380 Series

Between January 2019 and November Boeing did deliver 345 aircrafts, mostly widebodies. That was more than half of 704 aircrafts in the same period of time in 2018 before.

The end of the year was a lot of fun for Airbus as they got on the Dubai airshow a lot of orders. 222 new orders in the books for Toulouse. 50 A350-900 for Emirates Airlines, 60 A220-300 for Air France to mention tow big ones.

Todays episode Tobias asks why Emirates Airlines is the winner and Lufthansa only in 56th place? With a risk index of 95.48 percent, Emirates Airlines is only just ahead of another golf airline, Etihad Airways (95.21 percent). This was the result of the annual security ranking of the Hamburg aviation security office JACDEC in cooperation with the aviation magazine AERO INTERNATIONAL, which was published on Thursday the results for their 2019 safety ranking. Last year's winner Finnair only reached fourth place behind Spanish Air Europa.

Lufthansa was particularly unlucky as it slipped from 21st in the previous year to 56th position. The reason was a mishap on the part of the ground staff on July 30 in Frankfurt, a passenger staircase steered into the rear of a A319 already waiting with passengers on board for departure. The plane was damaged beyond repair. It therefore ended up as a total loss in the balance sheet.

#8 - Happy New Year - 2020 just started and we have to sleep and fly again to get the status requalified. For me it it is always a little annoying as the nights and miles for requalifying the status is comforting and gives peace of ind. But now the "stress" starts again.

In 2020 we will have some topics that we had already in 2019 or that are following us longer. Boeing 737MAX, the strike in the Lufthansa Group with the German Flight Attendant union UFO and of course BER the airport saga in Berlin.

What is an Airline Alliance or Airline Partnership ?

#5 - Airline Alliance ? What is this? Airline Partnership? That is for most frequent flyers very confusing and not easy to understand. Basically an airline alliance is a partnership between two or more airlines. These airlines recognize their loyalty members. Being a Gold member in one airline program will get you these benefits with other members in the alliance. Other benefits are: More destinations, coordinating flights and earning and redeeming miles on the other Alliance members.

Airline partnerships are mostly bilateral and depending on the agreements. Sometimes they are only valid for some routes or flights. Example would be Lufthansa ( Star Alliance) and Cathay Pacific (Oneworld) on the Hong Kong service to destinations in Australia and New Zealand.

Credit Card miles often are no real miles as they have a cash value. An advantage is that you can collect miles on those redeemed miles as it is basically a paid ticket. Distance miles are distance based and are fairer when using them on shorter distances. On longer flights region based miles can be a better option.

pooling mileage accounts - family accounts

#3 - Pooling mileage accounts is possible in a lot of airline and hotel loyalty programs. Originally mileage programs are created and designed that the person collecting has to be the one flying or doing the activity in order to get the miles. Mileage pooling changes that. Mileage Pooling allows you to share your accounts (which is typically just limited to award miles), which means that both members are able to access the total of their award miles, which are summed up in a pool. This can be different depending on the program. The mileage pool still consists of two or more separate accounts, so that each member is collecting award miles individually. Most programs a limited to 8 ppl or less. In order to be able to pool it is limited to family members only or when you are living at the same residence. Tis can be different depending on the program.

Price your points when you buy them and when you sell them. The goal is to sell them for a higher value. When earning the points you should try not to "buy" them for a higher price than 1 to 2ct per mile. When "burning" the points it is possible to get a value up to 10 ct per mile. The best value are First Class tickets bought for miles. But do not forget that you have to pay taxes.
