He was tasked with waiting for Samuel to offer a sacrifice to God before battle. But he didn't have the patience or faith to do so. Instead, he stepped outside of his role and did the sacrifice himself. This cost him the kingdom: "For then the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. But now your kingdom shall not continue."
