Episode 6: Choosing the Right Funeral Home

Choosing a funeral home is a big decision, and it's usually made at the worst possible time. Paul shares the best advice his mentor ever gave him, then walks through what to look for and what to ask.

In this episode:

•Key factors: price transparency, services, reputation, licensing, ownership, on-site vs. outsourced cremation, and pre-planning

•Your rights under the FTC Funeral Rule, including the General Price List

•Buying a casket or urn from a third party

•Red flags to watch for

•Questions to ask before you commit

Get the General Price List, compare two or three homes, and pay attention to how they answer.

There’s a conversation almost nobody has. Not because they don’t think about it — they do, at two in the morning, staring at the ceiling. They don’t have it because saying it out loud makes it real. And once it’s real, you have to actually decide something.

Today we’re having that conversation — the one about final arrangements. Not the mechanics of caskets or cremation. The harder part: how you actually sit down with the people you love — your spouse, your kids, your parents — and talk about what happens when you’re gone. Because silence isn’t protecting anyone. It’s just moving the weight from your shoulders to theirs, at the worst possible moment to carry it.

Preplanning vs. Prepaying

Most people think “planning ahead” for a funeral means paying for it now. It doesn’t have to. In this episode, we break down the real difference between preplanning and prepaying — how you can lock in your wishes without locking up your money — and why the funeral industry so often pushes prepayment instead of the planning conversation that actually matters.
