The uncomfortable truth is that most of us aren’t choosing between important and unimportant. We’re choosing between important and important, and those decisions quietly determine what your team actually ships, fixes, and improves.

We dig into what prioritization really means at work: not naming what matters, but deciding what gets your time and energy when two things that matter collide. We connect the dots between organizational priorities, team goals, and individual rocks, and why they must coexist with the everyday work that keeps the business running. We also unpack goal conflict research and the simple reason it feels impossible sometimes: new initiatives don’t come with new hours or extra attention.

Then we run a practical “2:15 PM test” you can use with your team. If the answer isn’t clear, we explain how guesswork starts driving the organization, and what better priorities should provide: direction in the moment, with room for judgment when reality changes.

If you want clearer decision-making, better focus, and less thrash, subscribe, share this with a leader or teammate, and leave a review with the trade-off your team struggles with most.

Support the show

Follow on Substack

Your team is always learning what matters and the teacher is often your metrics. In this Time and Energy morning brief, I unpack how scorecards, KPIs, and incentive signals shape behavior inside an organization, sometimes more powerfully than values on a wall. Measurement creates visibility and accountability, and frameworks like EOS make that discipline easier with weekly numbers, owners, and goals. But the bigger question is the one we rarely ask: what are the numbers we track training people to do?

I walk through why performance goals can coordinate effort and still lead to unintended outcomes when metrics compete. The customer service example is simple and painfully common: we say we want an incredible customer experience, but we measure how fast someone gets customers off the phone. When the messages collide, the number usually wins. That’s how marketing, sales, operations, customer service, and finance can each hit their targets while the organization still misses what truly matters.

We also connect this to revenue alignment and sustainable growth. Buyers don’t experience your accountability chart or your internal scorecard. They experience the whole organization, from handoffs to clarity to consistency in value. To make this practical, I end with two questions you can use today: pick one metric your team pays close attention to, ask what behavior it encourages, then ask whether that’s where you actually want people spending their time and energy. If you found this useful, subscribe, share it with a colleague, and leave a quick review so more leaders can build alignment through better measurement.

Support the show

Follow on Substack

Monday makes that painfully clear: overnight email, surprise meetings, pings, unfinished work from Friday, and a quick news check that somehow turns into ten minutes. Before we’ve even chosen what matters, the day starts choosing for us and it doesn’t choose gently. We want to change that by making one intentional decision before the noise gets a vote.

We dig into the research behind why switching tasks feels so draining. Sophie Leroy’s “attention residue” explains how part of your mind stays stuck on what you just left, especially when it’s unfinished, so your next task gets only the scraps of your focus. Then we bring in Gloria Mark’s findings that many of us shift attention about every 47 seconds on a screen, often because we interrupt ourselves. It’s a powerful reminder that productivity isn’t only about calendars and to-do lists; it’s about attention management, energy, and the hidden cost of constant switching.

We also talk about a trap almost all of us fall into: urgency impersonating importance. The newest thing, the loudest thing, and the easiest thing to finish can dominate our day, while the quiet priorities sit in the background, like relationships, health, meaningful work, and decisions that require real thought. The fix isn’t perfection or a distraction-free life. It’s a small, practical reset.

Before the day runs away, pick one thing that deserves your best attention and give it protected space, even twenty minutes or putting your phone elsewhere during a conversation. If this helps, subscribe, share it with a friend who feels stretched thin, and leave a review so more people can find the show.

Support the show

Follow on Substack

If your job title disappeared tomorrow, would you still recognize yourself? We start the day with a five-minute reflection on a distinction that quietly changes how you handle success, failure, and transition: you can influence your legacy, but you don’t control it. Other people do. They remember how it felt to be around you, whether you listened, showed up, kept your word, and helped them become more capable.

From there, we get practical about identity. So many of us lead with what we do because work can give purpose, community, and meaning. But when professional identity becomes fused with self-definition, a career change, layoff, retirement, or reorg can land as something bigger than a job shift. It can trigger the harder question: who am I now? We also explore contingencies of self-worth, the trap of letting performance become “evidence” about who we are, and why there’s a huge difference between failing at something and letting failure put your identity on trial.

We close by reframing roles as expressions of identity rather than the identity itself, then we offer two prompts you can use today: how would you describe yourself without titles, accomplishments, possessions, or other people’s opinions, and does your calendar actually give you chances to be that person? If this hits home, follow the show, share it with someone who needs it, and leave a quick review with the values you’re choosing to practice.

Support the show

Follow on Substack
