Friendless and without money, Christopher Columbus, with his little son Diego, travelled from place to place, always seeking someone who would understand his belief that the earth was not flat.

Years and years rolled by; and Columbus had gained nothing but a worldwide name of being a fool or an insane man. Men sneered at him, boys hooted at him in the street. Surely it was a brave man who could endure all this for the sake of right. But it is always so; as you grow older and read larger histories than these, you will find that seldom has a great man or woman brought to the world any great new truth, that ignorant and superstitious people did not scoff at it and make the life of the brave discoverer one of wretchedness and persecution.

He needed someone to help him get an audience with Queen Isabella of Spain!

This boy, as every American knows, was Christopher Columbus, the man who discovered America for what we call “the Old World.”

It is said that, living as he did in this little seaport town, he was generally, when not at school, to be found standing about the wharves watching the great ships come in, and listening to the marvelous stories that the sailors told.

"I shall be a sailor!" he would say to himself as he listened; and then, like all other small lads, he longed to grow big and strong and old. "When I'm a man, I shall be a sailor!"

On April 10th, 1606, James I of England issued the 1606 First Virginia Charter, which created the Virginia Company, authorizing Englishmen to colonize the Americas, particularly Virginia (named in honor of both the Virgin Mary and his predecessor, Queen Elizabeth the first).

It is extremely important to understand this legal charter because it influenced the thinking of the colonists. Sloppy courses in American History start with the colonists’ anger over King George the third’s tyrannical arrogance to tax the colonies without their consent, but they fail to explain why that was illegal in the first place.
