“A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.”

When this was written, a city without walls wasn’t just vulnerable—it was completely exposed. There was no barrier, no protection, and no control over what could come in.

That’s the picture being painted here.

Without discipline, there are no boundaries. Nothing is filtering what enters your life, your decisions, or your actions. Everything has access—and when everything has access, nothing stays stable.

This shows up clearly in real life with dogs. Without discipline, there’s no structure. No awareness. No control. And the moment that’s missing, everything around it starts to shift.

But when discipline is built, there are boundaries. There’s stability. Not everything gets access.

And it’s no different in life.

Without discipline, distractions, impulses, and reactions take over. Over time, things start to break down—not all at once, but slowly.

Out in the outdoors, this becomes even more obvious. You don’t wait until something goes wrong to build structure. You prepare ahead of time, because when the moment comes, you fall back on what you’ve already built.

This episode breaks down why discipline isn’t about reacting in the moment—it’s about building structure before you need it.

Because without it, there are no walls.

In this episode of Abiding Trails, I break down what discipline actually looks like when you’re living with multiple dogs, and why it can’t be something you try to turn on only when things go wrong.

Using real-life experience with my dogs—especially a young, high-energy dog that moves without thinking—you can see how quickly a lack of discipline affects everything around it. One dog pushing into space without awareness doesn’t stay contained. It spreads. The energy shifts. Tension builds before anything even happens.

But I’ve also seen the opposite.

When discipline is there, everything holds steady. Dogs don’t rush. They don’t react to everything around them. There’s space. There’s calm. Not because nothing is happening—but because they’re not controlled by it.

And that difference isn’t small. It’s everything.

That’s where most people get it wrong.

They want control when something goes wrong, but they don’t want to build discipline when things are calm. But discipline isn’t reaction—it’s what’s already there before anything happens.

It’s built in the quiet moments.
 In the decisions you make when nothing is forcing you to.
 In what you choose to do when it would be easier not to.

And it doesn’t stop with dogs.

You can see discipline in how someone moves, how they respond, and what they hold onto when things get uncomfortable. It shows up when things aren’t easy—and if it’s not there, that shows too.

Because when the moment comes, you don’t rise to it.

You fall back on what you’ve already built.

But that’s not how it works.

In this first episode of Abiding Trail, I break down what living with a structured pack of dogs has taught me about loyalty, responsibility, and paying attention to what’s actually happening in front of you.

With multiple dogs in different groups—Deimos and Atlas together, Titan with Freya, Nyx, Balor, and Galene, and Gaia being introduced separately—this isn’t a perfectly balanced setup. It’s a structured one. And that structure isn’t optional—it’s necessary.

Through real-life experience, I’ve learned that you can’t ignore behavior or hope things work themselves out. Without structure and consistency, problems build. Tension grows. And eventually, things break down.

The same applies outside of dogs.

Loyalty isn’t automatic just because something belongs to you. It’s built over time through daily actions, consistency, and a willingness to handle things the right way—even when it’s inconvenient.

There’s also a deeper layer to it—recognizing that there is a right way for things to be handled. When structure is in place, things hold together. When it’s not, they don’t.

This episode sets the foundation for what Abiding Trail is about: real-life observations, lived experience, and the kind of lessons that come from actually paying attention.

If you’ve ever thought loyalty was something you should just have, this will challenge that.

Because it’s not automatic.

It’s built.
