As the walls close in on a very passionate Giselle to prove that her daughter’s claim of being sexually abused by a cop is true, and on a Josh and Amanda in love, with legal and financial peril more than certain, we are able to see how blind systems such as blind justice and programmed AI (which s all AI) more often than not lead to unnecessary and sometimes undeserved human suffering.

Josh’s past hacking resurfaces when a forbidden message from Amanda breaks through the jail firewall, triggering a chain of consequences just as Giselle delivers emotional testimony in court and Amanda faces unexpected legal trouble of her own.

This episode is driven primarily by Giselle's courtroom testimony and the consequences of Amanda's message reaching Josh, making it one of the more emotionally consequential episodes in the recent run. Giselle's testimony provides the emotional center, while the Amanda/Josh storyline provides the suspense and cliffhanger momentum that carries the episode forward.

Longer synopsis:

Giselle Stivic testifies in the ongoing trial of Officer Justin Bradock, describing the fear she felt during the COVID lockdown, Samantha’s condition when she returned home from the protest, and the devastating emotional aftermath that eventually led to Samantha’s hospitalization and ongoing PTSD treatment. Her heartfelt testimony clashes sharply with the defense’s insistence that there is insufficient evidence to convict.

At the same time, Josh receives an unexpected message from Amanda inside the jail’s computer system. What initially appears to be a harmless expression of love quickly escalates into a security breach investigation. During Amanda’s visit, jail officials confiscate her phone and discover traces of an old hacking exploit connected to Josh. Although Amanda insists she never intended to break any rules, both she and Josh find themselves facing new consequences.

As Samantha and Giselle are left in the dark about events unfolding inside the jail, Joey learns through attorney channels that Amanda’s phone has become the center of a new legal problem. Later, Amanda races to her hotel job only to discover that her unexpected detention has already cost her valuable work hours. With relationships, legal battles, and futures hanging in the balance, everyone is forced to confront the consequences of choices made long ago.

Amanda is eating a bowl of cereal at the table in the main room. She eats the cereal with relish and holds her phone with her left hand, seeming to surf it.

AMANDA

Now, with all this money I’ll be

making...Naah, one week’s pay won’t

be enough. Too bad.

AMANDA

Oh that’s right, she went to court

too. Let me try the others.

hour. Well, I guess back to the 

graveyard.

She finishes the bowl, takes it and puts it in the sink, where she washes it lightly and then puts it in the dishwasher.

She heads back to the bed in the alcove, gets into it, puts on some music and lies back in the bed.

INT. JOSH’S PRIVATE JAIL CELL – DAY

Josh is sitting at a computer, a MONITOR sitting by his side, watching him. He is engaged in what looks like some form of study. 

All of a sudden, a dropdown message appears: “From Amanda the Goat – Hey thinking of you.” Both Josh and the monitor appear shocked. 

JOSH

Would it be considered breach of 

protocol to just say I’m fine, 

thinking of you too?

MONITOR

That’s not supposed to happen.

JOSH

She’s my girlfriend who I love and

would really like to respond to. I

don’t know how she got in.

MONITOR

Did you share any confidential 

information like a password with

her?

JOSH

No.

MONITOR

You sure? Nothing passed to her when

you really desired her and she said

you had to?

JOSH

Oh no, she wouldn’t do that.

MONITOR

Did you ever do any hacking yourself

on her phone?

JOSH

(seeming to remember 

something)

Uhno, wouldn’t’a ever done that to

her.

MONITOR

You sure?

JOSH

No. Like I said, I stopped hacking 

after I met her. I mean after she 

started coming over. When we were 

really together.

MONITOR

Is it possible she got on your phone

maybe when you were sleeping and got 

hold of the codes you kept on there?

JOSH

Oh no, she was there only after my 

phone was taken away.

MONITOR

What about that computer hack you 

did to look for her?

JOSH

You mean the one where the computer 

froze and I got nowhere? 

MONITOR

This is strange. And you’re sure you

didn't do any hacking on your phone...

JOSH

Well, this was a harmless message.

MONITOR

Did you tell her verbally how to 

hack into a system?

JOSH

No. Our purpose was only for love.

MONITOR

It was love that got you in here.

JOSH

But the love part is the good part.

MONITOR

People do all kinds of really sinister

things for love. I don’t agree. You

sure she didn’t let you borrow her

phone?

JOSH

I guess I won’t get to tell her I 

love her. Well, that’s alright, I’ll

see her when she comes by to visit.

MONITOR

Okay, thank you for that.

JOSH

Don’t mention it.

INT. L.A. COURTHOUSE, COURTROOM 802 - DAY

BAILIFF JEROME

Ms. Giselle Stivic, please rise and

come to the witness stand.

Giselle, who is sitting between Samantha and Kamala, does so.

BAILIFF JEROME

Raise your right hand.

She does.

BAILIFF JEROME

Do you swear to tell the truth, the

the whole truth and nothing but the

truth, to the best of your ability?

GISELLE

I do.

BAILIFF JEROME

Have a seat, please.

She sits down. Prosecutor Watkins rises and approaches her.

WATKINS

Ms. Stivic...

GISELLE

Yes...

I was freaking out already, worrying

afraid that by undermining my strict

Day Four of the Bradock trial brings Nancy Bradock to the witness stand, where she angrily defends her husband's integrity and challenges the court's right to scrutinize him. Watkins probes; Stern deflects; Judge Carmichael mediates. Meanwhile, Amanda's overnight hotel shift leaves her exhausted and texting into the void — until one message she sends somehow drops into Josh's supposedly secure jail study session, shocking both him and his monitor. As the cliffhanger seems to suggest an earlier hack, the episode ends with Giselle called to testify, and a cliffhanger that suggests another act of Josh’s sloppiness.

Episode 85 of CHRYSALIS – THE FAMILY ADVENTURE(S) deepens both the courtroom drama and the psychological consequences facing the characters after the fallout of the protest arrests.

The episode centers on Day Four of the trial against Officer Justin Bradock. Samantha attempts to challenge the makeup of the jury itself, arguing for more teenagers to be included, believing adults may not fully understand what she and Kamala experienced. The request is denied, but it immediately sets the tone for a courtroom increasingly divided by perspective, authority, age, race, and credibility.

The prosecution then calls Nancy Bradock, the officer’s wife, to the stand. Furious that her husband is even being accused, she passionately insists that Justin Bradock is a man of integrity who would never commit sexual assault against detainees. Her testimony becomes one of the episode’s emotional highlights as she clashes indirectly with both the prosecutor and Judge Carmichael over police conduct, body cam failures, and the limits of loyalty inside a marriage. Giselle worries about him, Samantha continues balancing the trial and her brother’s incarceration, and Amanda pushes herself through exhausting overnight hotel work while hiding from uncertainty and trying desperately to preserve some normalcy.

Then comes the episode’s major cliffhanger. During supervised study in his jail cell, Josh suddenly receives a live message from Amanda directly on the monitored prison computer system. Both Josh and the monitor are stunned. The possibility of another breach immediately raises alarm bells. Josh denies giving Amanda any passwords or access, but as the questioning continues, something seems to click in his memory. The episode ends before the audience learns the truth, leaving viewers to wonder.

This is one of the most intense, revealing episodes yet — and it leaves you wondering what justice really looks like for each of them.

Episode 84 serves as a dramatic legal crossroads for the Stivic family and their circle. In Santa Ana, Josh faces the consequences of his repeated escapes and his teenage hacking brilliance. Despite his lawyer Walinsky’s plea for a rehabilitation-focused sentence, the judge hands down five years in federal prison with the possibility of parole. Josh is left facing a long, monitored road to redemption, with his Stanford dreams postponed and his relationship with Amanda pushed to its breaking point.

Simultaneously, in a Los Angeles courtroom, the trial against Officer Bradock reaches a fever pitch. Kamala takes the stand, bolstered by an unexpected and bold intervention from Samantha, who corrects the record to catch Bradock in a significant verbal inconsistency—the "smoking gun" regarding his changing story. The drama intensifies when Kamala’s mother, Verna Franklin, delivers a powerhouse testimony, defending her daughter’s integrity and framing the case within the larger context of the quest for police accountability. The episode concludes not with a legal ruling, but with an emotional one: in a new, permanent holding facility, Amanda defies the odds and Josh's cynicism by pledging herself to him "for eternity," turning a prison visit into a profound vow of devotion that may prove either beautiful or tragic.

Episode 1 Synopsis (anime pilot option):
 Joey comes home angry from work and discovers son Josh may be hacking school records. Wife Giselle manages dinner and Samantha’s phone demands. Joey’s father Mike arrives, meal turns into political argument. Joey catches Josh texting to fix (alter) grades.

Joey and his wife, Giselle, greet each other upon his entry, each, particularly Joey, complaining about their day, him informing her of his getting a message about their son Josh’s delinquency, a complaint about the school, a demand for a beer, and a litany of complaints about the left and his auto repair shop clients’ inability to drive. In walks their daughter Samantha, who tries to get the latest iPhone out of Giselle and pouts when Giselle won’t relent. In walks Josh, who, being confronted about his delinquency, says it is made up but Giselle catches his lie by suggesting meeting with the principal. Joey's father, Mike, drops in and, after upsetting Joey by asking what’s for dinner, the two of them go at one of their progressive Democrat vs. pro-Trump Republican arguments disputing their versions of news. A stormy dinner begins as Samantha continues her pouting and Giselle has to force Josh to come down. Joey rants for his wife to get him a beer, which she refuses, the kids text during dinner, Samantha complaining about her home life to her friend, Josh asking his friend to unhack his altering of school records, which Joey catches, seizes his phone, hoping to find more bad on it, while blaming the "liberal" school system.
