1 John confronts one of the greatest dangers in the Christian life: claiming to know God while becoming comfortable with darkness. In 1 John 1:5–10, John reminds us that God is light — perfectly holy, perfectly pure — and that real fellowship with Him means walking honestly before Him.
Darkness rarely enters dramatically. More often, it creeps in quietly through compromise, excuses, blame, defensiveness, or treating grace lightly. And before long, sin starts to feel less serious than it really is.
But this passage is not written to crush us — it’s written to call us into the light. Because the invitation of the gospel is not to hide better, but to confess honestly. God does not meet confession with rejection, but with cleansing grace through Jesus Christ.
The way out of darkness is not pretending we’re fine. It’s stepping into the light.

Addressing both the “strong” and the “weak,” Paul calls us to refuse judgment and to protect one another’s consciences. Our freedom must never wound a brother or sister Christ died for, and our convictions must never climb into the Judge’s seat. The Kingdom of God is not about winning grey-area debates, but about righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.
Because we share the same Lord and the same table, our private preferences are never just private — they shape the environment our church family breathes in. In Christ, we don’t just agree to disagree; we sacrifice our rights and our rigidity to protect unity.

The initial stages involve technological advancements and the desire to create a city with a temple compound. This city and temple are intended to serve as a unifying force among the people. God, however, observes their efforts and judges them unfavourably.

God's response is to diversify their languages, effectively disrupting their endeavors. What was actually taking place at Babel was humanity's distortion of its view of God. They were beginning to construct a deity of their own making - a god whose needs could be met through human actions. In return, this god was expected to bless humanity with a prosperous future.

This narrative prompts us to introspect and ask a critical question: "Where am I fashioning a god of my own making?" Are we unwittingly shaping a god we can manipulate and control, expecting specific outcomes in various situations?

Commonly referred to as the Curse of Ham, the case was made historically from this text that God had willed that the descendants of Ham, i.e., Black Africans, would be enslaved perpetually by other people groups. And that belief, and it's subsequent degradation and subjugation of Black people, can be traced across Judaism, Islam, and Christianity.

Now, get this, such gross misinterpretation of Genesis 9 and 11 in building a biblical case for the institutions of slavery and Apartheid wasn’t just made by politicians and secular people of that time – but it was also made by Christians, pastors, theologians, and denominations.

We have the privilege of living in an age where one would be hard-pressed to justify the atrocities of both slavery and Apartheid. And yet, we shouldn’t be easily dismissive of the fact that the Bible was historically misused, through texts like these, to justify the unjustifiable – even by Christians!

The overflowing catch of fish leaves Simon and Peter in awe of Jesus' power and authority. However, what follows is even more astonishing. Jesus tells Simon and Peter to not be afraid and that they will no longer be catching fish but rather catching people as they become disciples and follow Jesus.
