The focus of our conversation was not on Sarah’s illustrious achievements but on what happens when the competition side of a career ends.

Sarah represented Australia on the road and track, competed at Commonwealth Games and World Championships. She raced for some of the biggest teams in the sport, including Orica-AIS, Canyon-SRAM and EF Education-Oatly. She became known not only for her performances but also for her contribution to team culture and her role mentoring the next generation of riders.

After her final race in 2025, Sarah had a plan for what came next but instead chose to take a year completely off. Six months into retirement, she is working with psychologists and career practitioners, unpacking what she had been carrying through her career and resisting the pressure to immediately replace one career with another.

She is now beginning to explore what her next chapter could look like, including an athlete support consultancy, while continuing her relationship with Bont Cycling and her work as a Tour de Cancer ambassador.

So what happens when the racing stops? How do you separate the athlete from the person, make peace with goals that will never be achieved and work out what you actually want when sport is no longer consuming your physical, mental and emotional energy?

For athletes, Sarah’s experience raises questions about when to start planning for life beyond sport, what support should look like and whether the qualities that make you successful as an athlete are necessarily the ones you need for your next chapter.

For sponsors and other commercial stakeholders, her experience raises different questions: how can you build career-long partnerships and what value can an athlete continue to create when performance is no longer the product?

Resources:

Sarah Roy High Performance Consultancy

Instagram

Facebook

LinkedIn

Support the show

The Prosperous Athlete is a production of Elite Athlete Fund, the sponsorship platform connecting elite athletes with businesses and supporters who believe in their value as ambassadors, role models, entertainers and most importantly humans.

For fans, it is a chance to get behind athletes whose journeys inspire us.
