And suddenly, Mary Beth was left standing in a future they had planned for two. Grief could have been the final chapter of their story. Mary Beth decided it wouldn't be. She took the love she could no longer physically give Michael and began giving it to people she may never meet. And Big Mike's Bottom Line was born. 💙 Turning Pain Into Purpose!

Mary Beth began talking about something many people would rather avoid discussing:

Colorectal cancer.

“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” Proverbs 4:7

In this powerful episode of The Keys To Life™, host Algie Mosley sits down with Dr. Stanley Oden—scholar, educator, civil rights activist, community leader, husband, and lifelong advocate for change, whose remarkable journey reminds us that sometimes the people who change history aren't trying to become historic. They're simply unwilling to remain silent when something needs to change.

Long before the doctorate or activism, there was a young boy in San Diego whose mother understood that before her son could help change the world, he needed to understand it. She introduced him to politics while other children were outside playing. She made sure Stanley and his brothers got to the library. Books became windows into worlds he had never seen and eventually tools for navigating the one in front of him. That lesson would follow him for life: Feed your mind, and you expand what is possible. But Stanley's education didn't happen only in books.

Growing up between Black and white communities taught him early about belonging, identity, friendship, and the painful consequences of choices. After walking away when a Black gang confronted his white childhood friend, Stanley carried the shame of that moment for years. But rather than allowing one painful decision to define him, he allowed it to teach him. Never again, he decided, would he abandon someone simply because standing beside them came with a price. And soon, Stanley began standing.

At San Diego High School, he helped establish a Human Relations Commission and participated in a protest against the Pledge of Allegiance in 1965. Later, at UC Davis, he helped organize Black students during one of the most turbulent periods in American history.

Following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Stanley helped bring thousands together for a campus memorial. He became part of organizing efforts that challenged university leadership, expanded educational opportunity, strengthened Black student representation, and helped lay foundations for traditions and programs whose impact would extend far beyond his own time on campus.

He wasn't merely studying history. He was helping write a piece of it.

Yet one of the greatest demonstrations of Stanley's courage came without crowds, microphones, marches, or protests. It came at forty years old.

He left the security of a stable career and entered a PhD program at UC Santa Cruz, surrounded by younger scholars with academic backgrounds that sometimes seemed far stronger than his own. Then he failed a course. Stanley could have interpreted that failure as confirmation that he didn't belong. Instead, he did something beautifully simple:

He went back and learned what he didn't know. He took the prerequisite. He studied. He returned. And he passed.

During one particularly overwhelming moment, still grieving the loss of his mother and questioning whether he could continue, Dr. Oden recalls seeing her face in the mirror and hearing the words: “Sonny boy, it's gonna be all right.” He kept going. And eventually, the boy his mother once sent to the library came home with a PhD.

Perhaps that is the deeper beauty of Dr. Oden's journey. The child who struggled with a stutter found his voice. The student who nearly failed out became a scholar. The graduate student who failed became Dr. Oden.

The young man who once walked away from a friend spent much of his life standing up for others. And the boy whose mother taught him to read eventually helped create opportunities for generations of students coming behind him. That isn't perfection. That's transformation!

And woven throughout his story is another beautiful lesson: remain open enough to discover love beyond the boundaries others may create. Stanley speaks tenderly about his wife, Gina, whom he calls “the treasure of my life,” reminding us that humanity becomes much larger when we stop allowing differences to determine whom we can understand, respect, or love.

Dr. Stanley Oden's Three Keys to Life

🔑 READING IS FUNDAMENTAL — Feed Your Mind.
Reading gave Stanley more than information; it gave him possibility. Books taught him to question, communicate, understand history, and eventually contribute to it. When you feed your mind, you give yourself more ways to imagine what could be.

🔑 BE YOURSELF — Don't Let the World Redefine You.
Through a childhood stutter, cultural boundaries, activism, academic challenges, and pressure to conform, Stanley learned that belonging should never require surrendering yourself. There will only ever be one you. Have the courage to become that person fully.

🔑 DON'T BE AFRAID OF FAILURE — Let It Teach You.
Stanley's life reminds us that failure doesn't always mean stop. Sometimes it simply means there is something here you still need to learn. Failure can humble you, educate you, redirect you—and prepare you for something you couldn't have reached without it.

His Three Keys Tell One Beautiful Story:

1. Read enough to understand the world.

2. Know yourself well enough not to let the world define you.

3. And when you fall, learn enough from the ground to rise wiser than you were before.

Because perhaps the greatest evidence of a life well lived isn't the Dr. before your name, the degree hanging on your wall, or even the history you helped make. It's knowing that because you had the courage to walk through a difficult door...you held it open long enough for somebody else to walk through behind you. And that may be one of life's greatest keys of all.

The Keys To Life™ 🔑
Real Stories.

At just ten years old, Kevin and his brother had a newspaper route, and every morning at 4:30, their father got up with them—helping roll papers, driving them to their route, and making sure they finished what they started.

The lesson was priceless: show up. Every day.

That foundation of consistency would carry Kevin through a life filled with unexpected turns.

After receiving a full-ride scholarship to Columbia University, homesickness eventually brought him back to California. He landed at UPS unloading trailers and quickly rose into management at only 22 years old. But achievement didn't protect him from disappointment. Kevin encountered barriers, watched opportunities pass him by, and heard his mother's reminder that sometimes “you gotta be twice as good as the next guy.”

Then life brought one of its hardest lessons.

Kevin lost his father unexpectedly just one month before the birth of his daughter. His father had always encouraged him to finish his education, so Kevin eventually swallowed his pride, returned to school, and completed what he had started. When he earned his master's degree, he stood beside his father's bed and wept because the man who had pushed him toward that moment wasn't there to see it. Yet, Kevin kept Rising.

He made challenging choices between career advancement and being present for his family, eventually walking away from a 17-year career at UPS and betting on himself in real estate. His journey became a reminder that sometimes success isn't climbing the ladder someone else built—it's having the courage to build a life that reflects what matters most to you!

But perhaps the most moving part of Kevin's story has little to do with business.

He and Algie talk openly about the masks men wear—the pressure to appear strong even while hurting inside—and the extraordinary gift of having people who can see behind that mask and love you anyway.

Kevin also shares his transformation from a man who once challenged God to “prove it” into a man grounded deeply in Faith. It didn't take long for life to challenge that belief.

His eventual realization was simple, but life-changing:

“Nobody owes you a thing in this world.”

Once he learned to lose the attitude and open himself to what others could teach him, his world literally opened. His military career took him to Japan, Korea, the Philippines, England, Spain, Italy, Greece, and beyond. Along the way, he discovered different cultures, built lifelong friendships, and learned that some of life's greatest education comes when you're humble enough to admit you don't know everything.

One principle followed Poppa Joe everywhere:

“Respect begets respect.”

Whether serving his country, building relationships, or playing competitive basketball around the world, he believed respect had to travel in both directions. At only 5'10", Poppa Joe refused to allow his size to determine his impact. He played with heart, passion, and a determination that simply said, “I wasn't gonna lose.”

That same fire shaped him as a father.

He raised his children, Joe and Alicia, to become leaders rather than followers, reminding them that whatever they chose to do, they should do it with passion and heart. Most importantly, he taught them that your word must mean something.

“If you say it, live up to it.”

Beneath Poppa Joe's toughness is something even more meaningful—a man who takes friendship seriously, loves deeply, and believes honesty must begin with the person looking back at you in the mirror. He reminds us that before we can demand accountability, respect, or honesty from anyone else, we first have to practice those things ourselves.

Poppa Joe also shares a simple lesson about relationships that may be needed now more than ever:

Listen first. Then respond.

Because if we're only waiting for our turn to talk, we're not really listening at all.

At its heart, Poppa Joe's story isn't simply about military service, basketball, fatherhood, or traveling the world. It's about growth.

It's about having enough humility to let go of who you thought you were so life can introduce you to who you might become.

And it's about discovering that success isn't measured only by titles, accomplishments, or how far you've traveled.

Be honest with yourself. Keep your word. Respect people. Give life your best.

This is more than an interview. It's a conversation with a man who once thought he had all the answers—and discovered that one of life's greatest signs of wisdom is realizing how much there is still left to learn.

His Three Keys to Life

🔑 Lose the Attitude
Nobody owes you anything. Let go of the belief that you already know everything. Humility opens doors that attitude can keep permanently closed.

🔑 Be a Person of Your Word
Say what you mean and live up to what you say.

In this heartfelt episode of The Keys To Life™, host Algie Mosley sits down with Marc Ledet, whose journey from the projects of Compton to a 27-year career in public service is a powerful reminder that "where you begin does not have to determine who you become."

Born the fifth of six children and raised without a father who could serve as a mentor, Marc learned early that sometimes family extends beyond blood. He found guidance in a caring neighbor, an art teacher who became an anchor, and the Salvation Army, where he spent countless hours working, teaching Sunday school, and serving others. Those relationships taught him something he would carry throughout his life: you don't need a perfect beginning to become a good person, you just need to embrace yourself with good people willing to believe in you.

At just fifteen, life demanded even more from Marc when his mother was diagnosed with a terminal condition. Suddenly carrying responsibilities far beyond his years, he would wake at 4:30 in the morning to read and highlight her college textbooks so she wouldn't have to. In helping his mother continue her education, Marc was unknowingly educating himself—not only about sociology and psychology, but about sacrifice, responsibility, perseverance, and love.

Those difficult years could have hardened him. Instead, they helped give him purpose.

Marc's life became a story of quiet resilience and reinvention—from custodian to certified HVAC technician, and eventually to the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency, where he served in numerous roles over a remarkable 27-year career. Yet some of his proudest moments weren't attached to a title. They were moments like repairing refrigerators for struggling single mothers and refusing payment because he understood that sometimes helping somebody is payment enough.

With warmth, humor, and honesty, Marc also reflects on peer pressure, choosing the right people to keep in your life, and his mother's wisdom about keeping your circle small. He and Algie explore the challenges facing today's young people—from social media and online bullying to the anxiety of trying to imagine an uncertain future.

Marc's message to both generations is simple: listen to one another. Technology may change, circumstances may change, and the world may change—but our need for respect, compassion, guidance, connection, and love remains remarkably human.

This is more than a story about overcoming adversity. It is about a young boy who was forced to grow up early, found strength in the people who poured into him, and spent much of his adult life quietly pouring that strength back into others.

Marc's journey reminds us that resilience isn't always loud.

Sometimes resilience simply says:

Keep going. Keep learning. Keep serving.

And when life changes... learn how to change with it.

Marc's Three Keys to Life

🔑 Respect — Start with Yourself.
Know who you are, establish healthy boundaries, and respect yourself enough to walk away from people and situations that diminish you. Then offer others the same dignity you expect for yourself.

🔑 Choices — Your Decisions Shape Your Journey.
Life is filled with choices, large and small.

In this powerful and deeply personal episode of The Keys to Life, host Algie Mosley sits down with his longtime friend Dr. Duane “Kuba” Kouba, whose remarkable journey took him from a small farm in Garwin, Iowa, to a 40-year career teaching mathematics at UC Davis. But behind the professor, educator, and accomplished mathematician is the story of a shy young boy who often felt too small, too quiet, and too overlooked, and who eventually discovered that some of life's most painful moments can become the very experiences that awaken our greatest strength: "Into a world where the numbers don't necessarily add up!"

Kuba reflects on growing up as the smallest and youngest kid in the room, struggling with confidence and rarely speaking up for himself. Yet even before he recognized his own abilities, there were teachers who saw something special in him. A fifth-grade multiplication game revealed an extraordinary gift for mathematics, and by seventh grade, his teacher, Ms. Anderson, was sending other students to his desk for help. Those small moments of encouragement began planting seeds of confidence that would eventually change the direction of his life.

With honesty and vulnerability, Kuba also opens up about the wounds of being bullied, excluded, and made to feel as though he didn't belong. One of the most defining moments came in ninth grade when he showed up for basketball only to discover that every player had received a jersey except him. The embarrassment hurt deeply, but somewhere inside that young boy, something awakened—an inner determination Kuba would later call “the Beast.” Instead of allowing rejection to convince him he wasn't good enough, it eventually became fuel to prove to himself that he could overcome whatever stood in his way.

That determination would be tested again years later in graduate school. After scoring just 22% on his first exam, Kuba found himself facing a professor who essentially suggested that perhaps he wasn't going to make it. He was behind students who had come from prestigious academic programs, and everything around him seemed to confirm that he didn't belong. But the same inner voice born from those earlier disappointments returned: “We ain't done here, buddy.” Kuba refused to quit. Through discipline, consistency, and relentless effort, he eventually earned the highest total score in the class and went on to build a distinguished career teaching generations of students.

Throughout the conversation, Algie and Kuba reflect on how failure, rejection, and disappointment can either become anchors that hold us back or lessons that propel us forward. Algie shares his own experience of failing an African American history class he assumed would come easily, only to respond by reading every chapter three times, working harder than ever before, and ultimately earning an A+. Together, their stories remind us that where we begin does not determine where we finish—and sometimes the greatest response to being counted out is simply refusing to count yourself out.

Kuba also speaks candidly about one of life's more difficult lessons: forgiveness. Decades later, he can still remember some of the people who bullied, embarrassed, or hurt him, and he openly acknowledges that letting go has not always been easy. Drawing strength from his faith and Romans 12:19—“Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord”—he continues working to release resentment rather than allowing yesterday's pain to occupy today's heart. Algie adds his own philosophy of “Hush and Flush”—the practice of releasing the toxic thoughts, anger, and worries we carry from yesterday so they don't steal the possibilities of today.

At its heart, this conversation is about far more than mathematics, basketball, or professional success. It is about discovering your voice, believing in yourself when others don't, forgiving what you cannot change, and continuing to pursue the dreams placed within your heart. It is also a beautiful reflection on friendship, faith, teachers who recognize potential, and the people who enter our lives at exactly the right moment.

The conversation concludes with a heartfelt rapid-fire round in which Kuba shares that basketball has remained an important part of his life, acknowledges the difficult realization that friendships sometimes change, and offers a simple but powerful truth to the next generation: “God's got your back.” And after a lifetime of accomplishment, his definition of success has become equally simple and profound: serving others.

This is more than an interview. It is a reminder for anyone who has ever been overlooked, underestimated, bullied, rejected, or told they weren't good enough that someone else's opinion does not have to become your destiny. Sometimes the very experience that makes you question your worth becomes the experience that reveals your strength.

His Three Keys to Life

Speak Up for Yourself — Believe that your voice matters. Don't spend your life waiting for someone else to recognize your worth or give you permission to be heard. Learn to advocate for yourself, express what you believe, and have the courage to let the world know who you are.

Learn to Forgive — Holding onto resentment doesn't change yesterday; it only allows yesterday to keep taking something from today. Forgiveness doesn't mean the hurt didn't matter. It means choosing not to let that hurt control the rest of your life—and sometimes the person you most need to forgive is yourself.

Follow Your Heart, Never Give Up, and Follow Your Dreams — Failure is not always a sign to stop. Sometimes it's an invitation to dig deeper. When others tell you that you don't belong, when the odds seem stacked against you, and even when you begin doubting yourself, keep moving forward. Your beginning does not determine your ending. Follow your heart, refuse to give up, and never stop believing in the dreams God placed inside you.

Send us Fan Mail

Support the show

The Keys To Life™
Unlocking life's greatest treasures!

In this heartfelt episode of The Keys to Life, host Algie Mosley sits down with Marianne Yamamoto, whose remarkable life has been shaped by constant change, quiet resilience, and an unwavering commitment to treating every person with dignity. Born on a U.S. Army base in Japan to a military father and Japanese mother, Marianne spent her childhood moving from country to country—Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Germany, Maryland, and Taiwan—learning at an early age that while cultures may differ, kindness, respect, and compassion are languages everyone understands.

Marianne reflects on a lifetime of embracing new beginnings, from becoming one of the youngest sales managers in Macy's prestigious Junior Executive Program to eventually owning and operating her own business. Yet as she looks back, she shares that the greatest rewards in life were never found in promotions or professional accomplishments. Instead, they were discovered in the relationships she built, the people she mentored, and the privilege of caring for those she loves most—including her father-in-law and now her 96-year-old mother.

With honesty and humility, Marianne opens up about the painful experiences of trying to fit in as a teenager, witnessing bullying firsthand, and learning that our differences are not weaknesses to hide, but gifts to embrace. She reminds us that every person longs to be seen, heard, and accepted, and that one simple act of kindness can leave a lasting impact on someone's life.

Throughout the conversation, Marianne shares timeless wisdom about the importance of staying true to yourself, listening before judging, respecting people regardless of their title or position, and remaining curious enough to keep learning throughout every stage of life. Together, Algie and Marianne also reflect on the challenges facing today's younger generation, the importance of accountability, the power of reading and mentorship, and how lifelong learning keeps both the mind and the heart alive.

The conversation concludes with a heartfelt rapid-fire round and a beautiful message for the next generation: never lose yourself trying to fit in, treat every person with respect, stay curious, and remember that your greatest growth often begins the moment you're willing to learn something new.

This is more than an interview. It is a reminder that a meaningful life isn't measured by how many places we go or how many titles we earn—but by how we treat people, how we continue to grow, and the legacy of kindness we leave behind.

Her Three Keys to Life

Be Yourself — Your uniqueness is your greatest strength. Don't spend your life trying to become who others expect you to be; embrace the person you were created to be.

Listen and Respect Others — Every person has a story worth hearing. She reflects on leaving home at a young age, becoming a single mother of two, and courageously rebuilding her life from the ground up. Whether riding buses across town to balance work and childcare, putting herself through nursing school, or trusting God when the future seemed uncertain, Rose never allowed hardship to harden her heart.

What shines throughout this conversation is not simply her resilience, but the extraordinary love she poured into her children despite poverty, divorce, exhaustion, and countless sacrifices. Her life reminds us that true greatness is often found not in public recognition, but in the unseen moments of choosing faith over fear, hope over despair, and love over bitterness.

With warmth, humility, and grace, Rose offers timeless wisdom on perseverance, family, forgiveness, and Trusting God's plan even when the path ahead is unclear. The conversation concludes with a heartfelt rapid-fire round and a beautiful message for the next generation: stay focused, trust God wholeheartedly, never be afraid to ask for help, and always cherish the people who love you—because they are among life's greatest blessings.

This is more than an interview. Born near the Underground Railroad in Cincinnati, Ohio, and raised in a segregated community, Dr. Frye-Lucas shares how a chance encounter with the Upward Bound program redirected her from a life with no college plans into decades of education, mentorship, and service — including her long relationship with UC Davis and the African and African American Alumni Association.

Dr. Frye-Lucas opens up about staying spiritually grounded through pressure, learning to say no with grace, the difference between real friends and associates, and why she believes "hard heads make a soft butt." She reflects candidly on marriage, motherhood, asking for help, and the importance of staying connected to family and cultural roots even while navigating predominantly white institutions and corporate spaces.

The conversation turns to today's younger generation — the impact of social media, the erosion of spiritual community, and the value of passing down hard-earned wisdom.
