I'm a big fan of self improvement. I do so many things to try to be better. The two most unconventional things I do are:

1. Float Tank (sensory deprivation tank)
2. CryoTherapy

I get asked about this ALL the time so in this episode I'm going to walk through
1.What are CryoTherapy and Float Tanks?
2. What are the benefits?
3. Why you should try them?

Interestingly enough these two things are very opposite of each other but there are so many benefits.

Float Therapy:
When it comes to Float Therapy there is a time commitment of 60-90 minutes. This is where I go when I have lots of decisions to make and I need time to just sit and think. I do this because it's just good old fashioned silence that allows me to process things!

The biggest benefit of Float Therapy? Yep, you guessed it, mental health!

CryoTherapy:
As we said this is the opposite of Float Therapy but it is equally as beneficial.

At its core you're revitalizing your body by bringing it to super cold temps.

The most surprising benefit is that you can actually burn up to 300 calories per session! But more importantly cryotherapy has helped me so much with my back!

We cover a few more benefits of Cryotherapy but needless to say I strongly believe that you should try it!

My encouragement to you is to try one of these things this week! Often they are in the same building or very close in proximity to each other.

For any big position I've ever hired for I usually have at least one person drop out.

Let's talk about the best way to handle that and see if we can't get them to jump back in. (and maybe even hire them!)

You just got that dreaded call or email and they are dropping out. Here's what I want you to consider: is this person in your top tier or your upper half of people you're considering? If not, then no problem, let them move on!

If they ARE in your top tier then in this episode we discuss the 4 steps to take to get them back in the process and make them a viable option. From getting on the phone with them to exactly what to say to get them to recommit to the puppy dog close, we cover it all.

The key is to let them know that you aren't here to sell them on the position. You just want to have a conversation. I have had these important conversations with top prospects and it was totally clear that it wasn't a good fit and why they made the decision.

Ultimately, we just want to get them to commit to the next step? Then we can go from there!

First let's talk about Advanced Recruiting.
We take recruiting very seriously at Self Publishing School.
My goal is to have at least 100 applicants per job posting and I use a bounty. (anywhere from $1000 - $5000 to help me find this person)
Then I make sure to get that bounty in front of everyone.
I also focus on referrals big time! I always ask "who do you know?" (that's a stealth way to get high quality talent) Oh and Linkedin Ads work really well!

Second let's chat about Advance Interview Techniques
- My interview process feels like going to therapy.
You need to dig in and find out if they are a good fit for your company and culture.
When it comes to the interview It has been said "Dig Deep or Go to Sleep"
Get comfortable asking the uncomfortable questions. This process can be polarizing! But that helps you and the candidate know if it's a good fit or not. I always ask current Compensation ASAP because I want this to be a better situation than their last few jobs.
Finally, even if I'm not involved with the process I want to be the very last interview! That way I can make sure the person is a good fit.

When it comes to your executive team you want to hire "Bar Raisers" (Thanks Jeff Bezos) Ask yourself, "Is this person better than our best performer in this area? Does this person have the potential to be our top performer?"
Which leads me to my next thought: always hire the Best Leader, not always the best Skill Set that makes it easy because if all things are equal the win goes to the leader

"How do you manage a remote team?"

I decided to record an episodes covering ALL of the tools I think are essential to running my online business.

All of the tools we talk about today will be helpful online and for traditional brick and mortars but they will be especially helpful if you have a remote or virtual team.

To avoid "Death By A Thousand Pieces of Software" I'm just going to talk about the top 10 that we use.

The first 3-4 are Mission Critical MUST haves for my business (and probably for yours too).

The rest of them are "nice to haves" or tools that might apply based on your business.

I talk about the ones we use and why we don't use some of the big players like Salesforce and Basecamp.

Here's the big take away: Avoid Software Fatigue! The best software for you is the one you and your team will actually use! There's always going to be cool new software but if the cost to switch is too high then it's not worth switching.

Do you eat by yourself often?

Keith Ferrazzi has a lot to say about that in his book "Never Eat Alone"

This episode is an implementation guide for that book!

Never Eat Alone Basic Concept = always be breaking bread and using meal time to connect with others.

Beyond that though, it's about really being intentional with the relationships that we build. Essentially, setting a "People Plan"

In today's episode I discuss Ferazzi's "People Plan" and give you some ways to flesh it out. (Which, oddly enough, doesn't get covered in the book!)

Here's how to create your People Plan!

Create a spreadsheet (with tabs per city)
Set 3-4 Categories Per City you're in throughout the year
People I want to Deepen Relationships With
People I want to Meet
People I know that can introduce me to others in that city
Optional Bonus: Dating Material (if you're single)

It's super important that we're intentional about our relationships! Not only the ones that we have but also the ones we are looking to build.

They list "selling" as the 4th step in the process, but the truth is it's happening throughout the entire process.

Most meetings suck because people don't know how to run them well. There are a lot of fundamentals to a great meeting:
A meeting purpose / KPI
A good agenda
Meeting roles: A facilitator, timekeeper and "action grabber"
Prep ahead of time, etc

It sucks.

Recently I had someone move on from SPS to start their own thing.

For most companies, meetings are VERY inefficient. Running our meetings in Asana is one way we run more effective meetings.

(this is especially helpful if you run a virtual company)

If you haven't heard of Asana - it's an AMAZING project management software.

Way better than Trello, Basecamp, Teamwork, and any other project management tool (trust me, I've tried almost all of them).

Asana is one of the 3 (or so) tools at the core of running Self Publishing School.

And like I mentioned - we even use it for meeting agendas.

I've never seen anyone else do this in their company.

This concept is SUPER important for two groups of people:
1. Managers / Leaders: this will free up soooo much time if you train your team on this and hire/fire based on people being "low maintenance superstars"

2. Employees: this is one of the fastest way to get promoted and take on more responsibility in your company (even a leadership position if you want it)

As a result, I had to learn most lessons in business the hard way…trial and error.

That, and reading every business book I could get my hands on.

1. getting into a business partnership out of insecurity that later cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars in a buy out

And the list goes ON and ON.

If you're not having conflict on your meetings, you're not having good meetings.

If you're not having conflict on your team, you probably don't have a cohesive team that trusts each other.

With conflict: ideas are sharpened, people are challenged, and everyone gets better.

ALSO with conflict: there's often disagreement on the best way to move forward.

What do you do when that happens?

That's what I talk about in this episode...

It's a principle called: "Disagree & Commit".

It was popularized by Jeff Bezos and it's a great way to:
A. encourage conflict / disagreement
B. encourage unity after the decision is made (no matter the decision)

This episode will help!

One time I was interviewing someone who wanted to work at SPS and I said: "you're a lot older than me and you'll report directly to me. Is that going to be a problem?"

I was terrified about my age, and whether or not people would want to listen to me or "follow" me as their leader.

My whole life I've been the youngest person in the room...

…almost always hiring and managing people who were older than me.

When I was younger, I thought this was a bad thing.

I thought people wouldn't respect me or take me seriously.

When I went to events or conferences, I'd wear a suit and tie…or suspenders and a bowtie…hoping that would make people take me seriously.

Then I realized it was all in my head. 🙃

Nobody cared about how young I was. All they cared about was whether or not I could bring results, and if I genuinely cared about THEM.

That's what I love about business. It's a meritocracy.

It doesn't matter your age, gender, race, religion, etc. All that matters is: do you bring value to the marketplace?

In this episode I talk about how to overcome limiting beliefs around being a young leader or entrepreneur.

It's all the lessons I learned the hard way from always being the youngest person in the room.

Contrary opinion of the day:

Not everyone should be an entrepreneur.

In fact, most people shouldn't be entrepreneurs.

I think the narrative of "everyone should be an entrepreneur" or "why haven't you started a business yet?" is EXTREMELY toxic.

In a world where everyone wants to be #1, there's a huge void of (and uncanny amount of shame for being) solid #2's.

Not everyone should be an entrepreneur.

In fact, a lot of times you can learn a lot more by joining a fast growing company early in your career.

In this episode I answer the question: "Should you get a job or should you start a business?"

I also talk about one of the biggest falacies in the entrepreneur world…and why most "successful" entrepreneurs aren't actually making any money.

I remember hearing about this concept from Hal Elrod a few years back and it rocked my world.

It fundamentally changed the way I approach goal setting & goal achievement.

It's called the "20 Mile March".

This has become the core way we achieve any goal at SPS, and how I approach all of my goals personally.

I've found that this concept is often known, but seldom used.

There was only one problem: I had no idea what an org chart was…much less how to structure one for my company.

If you don't know, I dropped out of college to start my company.

For most people, I think getting a college degree is a waste of time.

As a result, I often get asked: "Why did you decide to drop out?" or "How do I know if I should drop out or stay in school?"

In 2015 I wrote 365 "thank you cards"…one for every day of the year.

I like doing challenges, if you can't tell. : )

In 2014, it was 100 push ups/day…2015 was thank you cards.

Sending thank you cards and gifts is a core part of my "Add Value First" approach to relationships.

I like to zig when others zag so thank you cards are a great way to do that since nobody sends physical mail anymore.

I answer that question in this episode!

"I'm not as charismatic as you...so I don't think I can be a good leader."

This is probably one of the biggest myths about leadership.

When it comes to leading, charisma can actually be a bad thing.

(hear me out)

There's a BIG difference between inspiring people and leading people.

Inspiration will only take you so far as a leader until the wheels fall off and people start hating you. (trust me, i've been there lol)

So, 2 takeaways:
1. If you're charismatic, you CANNOT rely on that for your leadership
2. If you're not naturally charismatic, that doesn't mean you can't be a good leader. (in fact, I'd argue that you're more fundamentally set up to be a good leader)

The question I encourage you to ask yourself is: "Am I just inspiring people? Or am I being a real leader?"

"Do I have fundamental leadership principles that are setting me up for success?"

The truth is, before 2017 I didn't really know what leadership was…much less how to be a good leader.

I recorded this episode in the hopes that it will help people like me become better leaders.

(a low salary paid to the owners is one of the biggest red flags / triggers for you to get audited)

Do you create a Job Scorecard for every position in your company?

If not, you're making a huge mistake.

Not having a Job Scorecard (or a clear idea of what you're hiring for) is the biggest hiring mistake I see entrepreneurs make.

If you don't know what you're hiring for and what success looks like with that position, the chances of hiring an A player are slim to none.

I heard about this concept from the book "Who" by Geoff Smart & Randy Street. In their book, they talk about the 4 S's of hiring.

After reading the book, I went online expecting to find a Job Scorecard template or instructions on how to create a job scorecard.

I found nothing...only one obscure template on a third party site. So I created & refined this process over the last few years while hiring 35+ people & I'm sharing it here with you.

As my pastor would say growing up: "I'm amazed at how people will pay $25,000 to GET married (wedding)…but they won't pay $500 to STAY married (marriage conference)."

Likewise, I'm amazed at how many people will spend $100k+ to GET a college degree…but they won't spend $500-$5,000 to CONTINUE learning after they graduate.
