Philadelphia was not the strongest church, the wealthiest church, or the most influential church. Jesus Himself said they had “a little strength.” Yet they possessed something greater than human power — they had a door opened by Christ Himself. History shows that whenever God opens a door, He calls His people to walk through it. Whether it was missionaries crossing oceans, immigrants entering the “golden door” of hope, or believers preaching the gospel in hostile places, God has always opened doors so His truth could move forward. The question before every generation — and before every church — is whether we will recognize the door while it is still open.

One of the marks of the end-times church is a powerful statement that the Apostle Paul makes in 2 Timothy chapter three, when he says that they have a “form of godliness but deny the power thereof— from such turn away.”

IS IT POSSIBLE TO LOOK ALIVE BUT TO BE DEAD INSIDE?

IS IT PROBABLY THAT WE COULD HAVE ALL OF THE TRAPPINGS OF LIFE, FORM, ORGANIZATION, AND FUNCTION, AND STILL MISS ALL THAT CHRIST HAS FOR US? Indeed, it is possible— which brings us to the church at Sardis.

In every generation, humanity asks the same questions: Who are we, where did we come from, and why are we here? In a culture confused about identity, origins, and even the possibility of extraterrestrial life, Scripture still gives the clearest answer: we were intentionally created by God in His image, “male and female created he them.” At the center of that story stands a woman — Eve, the “mother of all living” — through whom came every human life, and ultimately Mary, through whom came Jesus Christ, the promised Seed of the woman. From the garden to the manger, the Bible reveals that our origin story and our salvation story are forever connected.

God does not call His church merely to survive in a sinful culture—but to remain holy in the midst of it.

We’re noticing that in the midst of all of the church ages that God’s people have a choice— though evil surrounds them, they may live victoriously in the strife. Jezebel may have a table spread— but you don’t have to feast at it. There is never a time in our Christian lives that we HAVE TO sin and compromise.

If I use the word wisdom, confusion might persist because we think we understand the term. However, a new term might be insightful to stir our thinking and to collect out thoughts. wisdom-insight; wisdom is truth applied in specific situations for godly ends; the application of knowledge with divine perspective to transform daily life. 

Second Samuel 13 is a tragic reminder that sin often grows strongest in the soil of silence. After Amnon violated his sister Tamar, the text tells us that David was very angry—but he did nothing. The warrior who faced giants could not confront the evil within his own house.  David failed to pull up by the roots weeds that would soon devastate his entire family, proving that indifference is never neutral.

The garden of the soul is where the flowers of godliness grow—and flourish they did.

King David had made a gradual ascent to the heights of power and prestige. Though he slew Goliath early in his career, it was God who consolidated power around David and placed him upon a throne able to withstand the storms of life. Blossoms of goodness overran the psalmist’s life.

Yet weeds have a way of overtaking the heart. One decision—one weed—took root in David’s soul and affected his family for generations. Whereas giants could not slay David, inner passions did. Whereas Saul could not kill him, sensuality won.

Though David was rooted in God’s blessings and was surrounded by God’s glory, the weeds he allowed to grow diminished the fruitfulness of God’s goodness in his life.

The Bible describes the 12 as ordinary men. They were not to be known for anything extraordinary about themselves. Yet, they did extraordinary things because of the power of the One who called and equipped them. Join us for this lesson from Mark chapter one as our Better Man study group dives into the power of power to use ordinary things in extraordinary ways.

In Acts 12, we don’t just see a persecuted apostle, we see a praying church. While Peter is locked in a prison cell, the church is on its knees; while guards stand watch, God’s people gather in one accord before the throne of grace. In Mark chapter one, the gospel writer seeks to introduce his readers to the Lord Jesus, the Son of man. This great introduction leads the reader into the wilderness, in which John the Baptist, Jesus, and wild beasts find themselves in the wilderness.
