Test the Spirits | Not Every Spiritual Voice Comes From God (1 John 4:1)

In this episode, we enter a sobering conversation rooted in 1 John 4:1—and why believers are commanded not to accept every spiritual voice, manifestation, prophecy, impression, or teaching without first testing its source.

This is not a message about becoming suspicious of everyone.

This is a spirit test.

The Bible does not tell us to believe every spirit because something feels powerful, sounds prophetic, uses the name of Jesus, or confirms what we desire. Scripture tells us to test the spirits because spiritual language alone is not evidence of spiritual truth.

Not everything supernatural is holy.

Not every open door is from God.

Not every accurate word carries the Spirit of truth.

And not every person who speaks about Jesus has surrendered to the character and lordship of Jesus.

Testing the spirits is not fear. It is obedience.

What Scripture means when it commands us to test the spirits

Why spiritual activity should never be confused with spiritual authority

How a message can sound accurate while carrying the wrong spirit

Why the name of Jesus must never be separated from the nature of Jesus

A voice may impress you and still fail the test.

A message may excite you and still pull your attention away from Jesus.

A spiritual experience may feel powerful and still produce fear, dependence, confusion, superiority, or control.

The question is not merely, “Was it supernatural?”

The question is, “What does it produce, whom does it exalt, and does it agree with the truth and character of Jesus Christ?”

The Spirit of God does not need manipulation to accomplish the will of God.

He does not seduce us through ego, bind us through fear, or demand that we abandon Scripture in order to prove that we have faith. The Holy Spirit glorifies Jesus, produces holy fruit, and leads us deeper into truth, humility, freedom, love, and obedience.

Testing the spirits also requires us to test what is operating within our own hearts.

Are we drawn to a message because it is true—or because it makes us feel chosen?

Are we receiving a word because it reflects Jesus—or because it promises influence, vindication, recognition, or control?

Before we examine the vessel in front of us, we must invite God to examine the vessel within us.

Discernment without humility becomes suspicion.

Spiritual confidence without testing becomes vulnerability.

But truth, tested in the light of Scripture and surrendered to the Holy Spirit, does not fear examination.

Do not be captivated by the manifestation and forget to examine the fruit.

Do not follow a voice simply because it knows your name.

Test what you hear.

Test what you feel.

Test what you desire.

And remain anchored in Jesus—the Spirit of truth and the Word made flesh.

Discernment or Confirmation Bias? | When “God Said” Sounds Like What You Already Wanted

The Myrrhologist Podcast | Marissa Saint Luc

In this episode, we enter a heart-searching conversation about the difference between genuine spiritual discernment and confirmation bias—and why the two can feel dangerously similar when desire has already made a decision.

This is not a message about doubting everything you hear.

This is a motive test.

Confirmation bias gathers evidence to defend what the heart has already chosen. Discernment brings every desire, interpretation, prophecy, and opportunity before the Lord—and remains willing to receive an answer it did not expect.

Sometimes we are not waiting for God to speak.

We are waiting for Him to agree.

When our emotions are invested in a particular outcome, we can interpret every open door as confirmation, every coincidence as a sign, and every encouraging word as permission. We may call something “peace” simply because it offers relief, or call resistance “warfare” when it may actually be the mercy of God redirecting us.

True discernment does not begin with, “How can I prove this is God?”

It begins with, “Lord, what is true?”

In today’s episode, we talk about:

Why discernment and confirmation bias can initially sound alike

How desire can influence what we believe we are hearing from God

The danger of searching for voices that will confirm a decision we have already made

Why repetition does not automatically equal divine confirmation

The difference between the peace of God and the relief of getting what we want

How Scripture, fruit, timing, character, and wise counsel help us discern

Why correction is not rejection—and closed doors are not always spiritual warfare

How to surrender an outcome without surrendering faith

Why mature discernment remains teachable, patient, and willing to be wrong

And how to recognize when preference has quietly taken the place of obedience

Discernment is not the ability to make our desires sound spiritual.

It is the willingness to place those desires on the altar.

God is not threatened by our questions. He is not asking us to manufacture certainty or force meaning out of every detail. He invites us to slow down, examine the fruit, search the Scriptures, and let Him reveal what is operating beneath the surface.

If a word is truly from God, it does not need manipulation to survive examination.

And if the Lord removes something we were convinced He promised, our faith must remain rooted in His character—not in our interpretation.

The question is not only, “Did I hear something?”

The deeper question is, “Am I willing to obey God if His answer contradicts what I hoped to hear?”

We hear the word revival everywhere—revival meetings, revival culture, revivalists, revival fire. But there’s a question the Church rarely stops long enough to ask:

Is what we call revival actually biblical?

Jesus warned that signs and supernatural works alone are not proof that He approves of the person performing them. The biblical test has always gone deeper.
