In this episode of The JoCo Republican Podcast, I break down Elon Musk's incredible journey from South Africa to Canada, through failure, risk, near bankruptcy, Tesla, SpaceX, and ultimately becoming one of the most influential entrepreneurs in the world. Then I compare that journey to my own story. Years ago I was homeless right here in Grants Pass.

 The lesson isn't that everyone becomes a billionaire. The lesson is that success requires accountability, hard work, risk-taking, discipline, and refusing to quit. We also tackle Oregon's homelessness crisis, the Housing First model, drug enabling, the homeless industrial complex, and why compassion without accountability often traps people instead of helping them recover.

This week we're diving into the latest controversy surrounding candidate filings, the Tribune's demands for answers from John West and Chad Hansen, and the claim that refusing to engage with a known leftist newspaper somehow creates suspicion. Here's the problem: candidate filings are required to be truthful under Oregon law. Nobody disputes that. 

But where exactly does the law say candidates must answer a newspaper's questions, provide documents on demand, or participate in a publication's investigation? We'll break down what a SEL 101 actually is, what Oregon law actually requires, and why "they didn't answer us" is not the same thing as evidence. 

We'll also discuss the elephant in the room: the Tribune's history with local conservatives, the prior litigation involving John West, and why some people are questioning whether this is journalism or simply another attempt to stir up controversy. A local resident recently made a post on Facebook on every local Facebook group I am a member of accusing members of our party of possible ballot harvesting or other foul play simply because volunteers were helping members of the public by taking ballots, voter registration forms, and other paperwork across the street to the courthouse. The reality is this has been done for years by volunteers helping people in the community down at our office. What caught my attention was not just the accusation itself, but the photograph that was used. I went down and took my own picture from outside and, at nearly six feet tall, it became obvious the original image appeared to be taken from well above normal standing height. I also pointed out details like the windowsill and dust patterns on the glass that strongly suggest the photo may have actually been taken from inside the courthouse building looking outward. Without accusing anyone specifically, it raises a fair question: why would county employees or anyone inside a public building in a private office be photographing members of the public during normal business hours? I’ll let the community look at the evidence and decide for themselves. 

We certainly aren't paying these public servants and employees over 50 million dollars a year to spy on members of the public..

 Tonight I cover the May 19th, 2026 election results for Josephine County including U.S. Senate, Congressman, State Representative District 3, County Commissioner Positions 1 and 2, County Clerk, County Treasurer, Legal Counsel, and the PCP (Precinct Committee Person) races.  I went out to the Josephine County Animal Shelter and walked the facility while talking with staff, with Commissioner Gary Richardson there answering questions as we went.

 You’ll see what they deal with day to day and how the place actually runs. They’ve got about 9 staff members and a volunteer base somewhere in the 150–200 range, handling thousands of animals every year. It’s a small crew doing a lot of work, and volunteers are a big part of keeping it going.

 One thing people don’t always think about is animal control officers. They’re the ones responding to calls across the county and dealing with situations most people never see. If that service gets cut back, those calls don’t go away. They fall on local police and the Sheriff’s Office, which ends up costing taxpayers a lot more. A lot of people in this community love animals, myself included, and want to make sure they’re taken care of and safe. 

That’s really what this comes down to. What stood out most is how much things have changed. Years ago, euthanasia rates were around 70% or higher. Today it’s down to roughly 3–5%. Now they’re dealing with more animals coming in and rising costs. 

The focus is keeping things where they are and making sure it doesn’t start sliding backward. That’s why continued support, and even having a real conversation about increasing funding for animal control, matters. If you live in Josephine County, this directly affects your community.

Today I talk about some of the projects connected to State Representative Dwayne Yunker and how they impact Josephine County.
