Roof-Crashing Faith

In our narrative today, we see a small group of friends, one of which is not able to walk. These friends have heard of Jesus and the miracles he has done and they know that Jesus will heal their friend if they can get to Him.

I can just see these friends talking about how to get their impaired friend to Jesus. Perhaps one of them first saw or heard Jesus and brought the news to the others who then grew in faith. They then decided to go to where they had heard Jesus was teaching only to find that the crowd was too great.

It is easy to imagine the people in the back of the crowd, straining to hear Jesus and ignoring these loud people with the impaired friend and his bed. They may have been told to go home, there was no way they were going to get to Jesus today. They probably sat down on the ground in despair and frustration.

What happened then? Did they give up? Did they make it to Jesus? Let's find out!

Spread The Word

Today’s narrative paints the picture of a frustrated group of people who have worked all day and done all they could and have failed. The have failed at their work which means that they and their families are at risk of not having anything to eat and not having anywhere to live. They have failed, they have accepted that they have failed and they are preparing to go home to their families with nothing.

Then Jesus tells Simon Peter to try again. Simon knows that there is no point to this. He has proven it.

But he has faith enough in Jesus, even though he is doubtful, to be obedient to Him and casts his net out again to catch fish.

So what happened?

Speak It

The four verses we have today are very powerful, especially when we are starting something new. They show God creating and they show at least one way for us to create.

In verses one and two, God looked over His creation. In verse three He took a step towards sculpting His creation and making it more as He wanted it to be.

But, why did God show us these steps? He could have created the earth in its final form to begin with. Why go through these steps? I believe one reason for His doing this, is to show us how to plan and how to work.

If we were to follow God’s procedure here, we would choose our task or idea. Review it carefully and then, when we’re ready, speak it into the light. Speaking it into the light is giving voice to what we are going to do, what we are going to create. Literally speaking it into reality.

Speaking our intentions out loud to ourselves is a very powerful action, especially if we do it everyday. It makes our plans real and motivates us to work towards fulfilling them. Thinking about your plans is daydreaming and fantasizing, speaking your plans out loud is planning. I’m not the type of person to tell all my friends and family what I’m working on, people tend to throw cold water on plans that are not theirs - even if they don’t intend to. Some plans I keep between me and God.

Which brings me to verse 7. When we have reviewed our plans, goals, intentions and tasks, give them to God. Ask God to guide you in what to do and how to go about doing it. Expect God to provide you with whatever it is you’re looking for. Expect God to open doors that you didn’t even know needed to be opened. Give your plan to God, work on your plan and execute your plan to His glory.

Once you have given your work to God, He will guide you. Be careful what you ask for though because you will find that God will move your life towards that goal.

In the beginning of this new year, take time to carefully look over your life and situation. Is there something that you need to take to God? Is there a part of your life that needs to be worked on? Is there some work that you know God wants you to do but you haven’t been working on it. Take time today to pray, make your plans and speak them into the light.

Jesus Walked To The Cross For Us

As I’m talking today, it is Christmas Eve 2020. Many of my family member and friends are out and about buying last minute presents, traveling, and spending time with the ones they love. This is a joyous time for many people, even in the worst of times. 2020 has been a very rough year for many people but we still find joy in the little things of life. I hope that many of us have found new joy and new peace in time spent in quiet reflection, solitude, and time, a lot of time, spent with loved ones.

As a Christian, I have peace and joy regardless of my situation. I am not saying that I always embrace that peace and joy, but it is always there for me whenever I remember to turn back to Jesus. While this year has been a strange one for me and I could not have predicted many of the paths I have walked this year; it has been a very good year for me. I would expect that it has been a very good year for many Christians who place their hope, joy, peace, and source in God through Jesus. By source I mean our material goods and day to day source of provision.

As we reflect back on 2020, on Jesus, His birthday and what He has done for us; I ask that you also reflect back on Jesus and what He went through for us.

God Warns The Magi And Joseph Acts Fast

In today’s narrative, we see the birth of Jesus, the plot to kill him, His earthly father protecting Him, some gentiles worshiping Him and others pretending to worship Him. That’s a lot of activity and concerns to juggle for a young family, especially given that they were far from their home.

This is of course a great time for us and we celebrate the birth of Jesus. But we should never forget the burden that Joseph, Mary and of course Jesus had on their shoulders. I believe that little baby Jesus was unaware of what lay before Him, as were Mary & Joseph not fully aware of their futures but even at the time of Jesus’ birth, forces were seeking to kill Jesus forcing Mary and Joseph to act to keep their precious child safe.

So what were these forces and who were these gentiles? Well . . .

Let’s get right to it.

When Obedience Costs You Your Reputation

The Christmas story starts with a moment that would break most people; Joseph learns Mary is pregnant before they live together, and everything in his world points to betrayal.

We read Matthew 1:18–25 out loud in both the King James Version and the NIV, then pause long enough to feel the tension that often gets edited out of nativity scenes. Jesus’ birth is worth celebrating, but it also marks the beginning of his earthly path toward the cross and our salvation.

What grips us most is Joseph’s response. He has cultural permission to expose Mary and protect his own name, yet he chooses a quiet divorce because he refuses to shame her. That mercy becomes the doorway for God’s guidance, as an angel appears in a dream and tells Joseph not to fear, to take Mary as his wife, and to name the child Jesus. We also talk about Emmanuel, “God with us,” and what it means to trust God when you can’t make everyone else understand what you know.

We don’t skip the hard part: the angel speaks to Joseph, not to the neighborhood.

Obedience can cost your reputation, and faithful people often carry burdens nobody applauds. We end by giving Joseph his due as an ordinary, hardworking man in extraordinary circumstances, and by thanking the fathers and stepfathers who quietly provide, protect, and put their families first.

Be A Living Sermon

Genealogies are easy to skip, but they can change how you see Jesus and yourself.

We open Matthew 1:1–6 & 16–17 tracing lineages from Abraham to David to Christ, then we turn to Hebrews 1:1–5 to hear the bigger news, God has spoken to us by His Son. That combination gives us a sharp picture of Jesus’ true humanity and His divine authority, not as abstract doctrine, but as a foundation you can stand on when your week gets noisy.

From there, we get personal about identity and purpose.

If we accept Christ, we’re not just inspired by a story, we’re adopted into God’s family, with real access to God through Jesus. And with that belonging comes responsibility, the “family business.”

We focus on two core assignments that shape Christian living and spiritual growth, love through action and sharing the gospel. We talk honestly about why loving yourself can be the harder challenge, and how Scriptures on self-control, renewal of the mind, and disciplined living help us become a visible example that matches what we say we believe.

A Deadly Lie

Two scenes sit back to back in Acts, and the contrast is hard to ignore. First, a community of believers lives with real unity: one heart, one mind, open hands, and a simple goal of making sure no one among them lacks basic needs. Then, almost immediately, a married couple brings a gift that looks generous on the outside but is built on a lie and the consequences are shocking. If you’ve ever felt confused or disturbed by Acts 5, you’re not alone, and we slow down long enough to hear what the text is actually saying.

We read Acts 4:32-37 and Acts 5:1-11 and talk through the early church’s radical sharing, the role of leaders in protecting unity, and why Barnabas stands out as “son of encouragement.” From there we face the story of Ananias and Sapphira: not a warning about failing to donate enough, but a warning about fraud, deceit, and performing holiness for status. Peter’s questions make it clear they had choices. What they chose was image over integrity and praise over truth.

We also connect the lesson to everyday Christian life: generosity, service, and church giving can become a stage if we’re not careful. 1 Corinthians 13:3 presses the point that God weighs the heart behind the gift, not just the gift itself. If the motive is pride, the sacrifice may impress people while still missing what God desires. The invitation is to do good with love, honesty, and the furtherance of God’s kingdom as the goal.

Love in Action

You’ve heard the Good Samaritan story before, but have you really heard it?

We spend a focused quarter-hour in Luke 10:25–37 and let Jesus press on the question we all try to escape: who counts as my neighbor, and what does love require when it costs me something?

We read the passage, then walk through the people on the Jericho road: the wounded man, the priest, the Levite, the Samaritan, and the innkeeper. Along the way, we talk about compassion, mercy, and why “good” religious instincts can still end up on the far side of the road.

The Samaritan’s care is practical and detailed. Bandaging wounds using oil and wine, providing a ride, paying for recovery, and promising to cover the rest. That’s real love, love your neighbor as yourself expressed through action.

Then we explore a deeper gospel thread: the wounded traveler is a picture of our helplessness, the limits of law and self-justification, and Jesus as the one who comes close, heals, carries, and pays the price.

Radical Love

Loving your enemies sounds simple until someone actually wounds you.

We open Luke 6:27–36 and sit with Jesus’ plain commands: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you, and lend without expecting anything back. That’s not a personality test or a vague spiritual ideal. It’s a concrete picture of Christian discipleship that runs against every instinct for payback, self-protection, and keeping score.

We read the passage in both the King James Version and the NIV, then slow down to ask the honest questions: Why does this teaching feel impossible? When Grief and Faith Pull in Different Directions

One of the things I've learned since the death of my daughter is that grief and faith often pull my attention in different directions.

Grief constantly points me toward what I've lost. Faith points me toward what remains true.

Grief tells me to focus on my circumstances. Faith reminds me to focus on Christ.

Please, hear me friend.

I'm not saying that grief is wrong or that missing our children is a lack of faith. Crying is not a lack of faith, and neither is mourning.

Jesus Himself wept, the Psalms are filled with grief and mourning, and Job spent chapter after chapter lamenting his suffering before God - just to mention a few examples.

But I've noticed something in my own life. When I spend all of my time focused on my pain, my questions, my fears, and my circumstances, I begin to lose my footing.

I become discouraged. I feel overwhelmed. I begin to lose sight of hope - or at least hope feels cloaked in sorrow.

Yet when I intentionally return my focus to God, and His character, even imperfectly, I experience something very different.

The circumstances haven't changed. My daughter is still gone and I still miss her, but I remember what is also true.

God is still good.

God is still faithful.

God is still present.

And one day, God will make all things right.

That doesn't mean I always feel hopeful. It doesn't mean I wake up every morning full of faith and confidence. It doesn't mean I never struggle, question, doubt, or cry - I cry often.

What it means is that my feelings are not the ultimate authority in my life. My circumstances are not the ultimate authority in my life.

The culture around me is not the ultimate authority in my life.

God is. And because He is, I can hold two truths at the same time.

My daughter died and God is still good.

My heart is broken and God is still faithful.

I have unanswered questions and God is still trustworthy.

I can carry profound sorrow and I have profound hope.

None of this is possible because I am strong, or I've mastered grief, or because I've figured everything out. It is only possible because Christ has not changed.

Hebrews 13:8 tells us that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever – God reminded me of that on our way to the funeral home the first time. Psalm 100:5 reminds us that the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.

It is true that my life, my family, and my future have all changed. But God did not!

And on the days when grief feels heavier than I can carry, that truth has often carried me.

The world tells us to put our hope in circumstances, but scripture tells us to put our hope in Christ.

Those are not the same thing.

One rises and falls with the situation. The other remains steady when everything else is shaken.

I don't understand what God is doing. I don't like what has happened. But I am learning that peace is often found not by understanding everything, but by remembering Who I trust.

I certainly don't say this because I have arrived. I say it because I'm grateful, I hope it can help someone else, and I need the reminder myself.

Restoration

Saul’s jealousy reaches a terrifying point; he orders his own son and servants to kill David.

We slow down in 1 Samuel 19:1–7 to watch what happens next and why it matters so much for real life. Jonathan is caught in a brutal tension between his loyalty to his father and his love for his friend, and he chooses a kind of courage that looks a lot like peacemaking.

He warns David, asks him to hide, then walks straight into a hard conversation with Saul to defend innocent blood and call a king back to reason.

Show Love In Victory - Part Two

A brother betrayed. A family starving. A reunion that could have turned into revenge, but instead becomes one of the most moving portraits of forgiveness in the Bible.

We spend a quarter-hour in Genesis 45 as Joseph finally reveals himself to the very brothers who sold him into slavery and listens to their stunned silence while he weeps openly.

We read the passage in the King James Version and a modern translation, then slow down to trace the backstory: Joseph’s rise from slavery to governor, the regional famine, and the tests he uses to see whether his brothers have truly changed.

Now they’re starving, and the only place with food is Egypt, where the governor holds their fate in his hands. As we read Genesis 42:6–25, we watch Joseph come face to face with the brothers who sold him into slavery and see what happens when power, memory, and God’s providence collide.

We walk through the story beat by beat: the famine that drives Jacob’s sons to Egypt, Joseph’s hidden identity, and the shocking choice to speak harshly and accuse them of spying. We talk about why Joseph might test them, what trust and wisdom look like when forgiveness is not simple, and how boundaries can serve redemption rather than revenge.

Through It All, Persevere

A king has a nightmare he cannot shake, and a prisoner gets called in to explain it.

That is where Genesis 41 gets uncomfortably practical for real life. Joseph tells Pharaoh that God is revealing what is coming, then he lays out a clear plan for how to survive it. We read the passage in both KJV and NIV, slow down over the meaning of the doubled dream, and talk about why spiritual discernment should lead to wise action, not just strong feelings.

We also trace the backstory that makes Joseph’s moment possible: betrayal by his brothers, slavery in Potiphar’s house, relentless temptation, a false accusation, and years in prison that feel like a dead end. The through line is faithfulness; Joseph does not build his life on resentment. Your Purpose is Greater Than Your Situation

A multicolored robe, two bold dreams, and a frustrated, angry, jealous family.

We open Genesis 37 and slow down long enough to feel the tension behind the famous story of Joseph. The details matter here, we see favoritism that stings every day, jealousy that compounds over time, and a household where anger simmers until it boils over.

We read the passage in both the King James Version and the NIV, then reflect on why a “scandalous” family narrative can still be deeply encouraging. Joseph’s brothers strip him, throw him into a pit, and sell him into slavery for twenty pieces of silver. It is a brutal reminder that people can choose sin, cruelty, and betrayal, even toward their own.

And yet, we lean into a central thread of biblical encouragement; God is not surprised, God is not powerless, He works through broken circumstances to fulfill His bigger plan.

The Tongue is a Fire

A single sentence can do what years of good intentions can’t; it can change how someone sees you, sees the church, and even how they see God.

We read James 3:1–12 then sit with its blunt message about the tongue. James compares our speech to a bit in a horse’s mouth, a rudder steering a ship, and a small spark that can set an entire forest on fire. The point lands because we’ve all watched words travel faster than our regret.

We also take seriously James’s warning that not many should become teachers because teachers are judged more strictly. That includes anyone who represents God publicly, explains Scripture, or carries influence in a faith community. Daily Bread And Sticky Sins

Prayer gets clearer when we stop treating God like a distant idea and start approaching Him the way Jesus teaches - “Our Father.”

We spend fifteen minutes inside Matthew 6:9-13, taking the Lord’s Prayer line by line and letting it land where real life hurts. If your experience with an earthly father makes the word “Father” complicated, we talk honestly about that too, and why God’s fatherhood is steady, present, and safe.

We also linger on “hallowed be thy name,” because reverence is not religious stiffness, it’s remembering who we’re speaking to.

Ignore those Elephants

Temptation shows up like an elephant in the room - loud, impossible to ignore, and somehow it gets bigger the more we stare at it. Today we sit with James 1:1-11 and let Scripture challenge our instincts.

James tells scattered believers to treat trials as joy, not because pain is pleasant, but because tested faith produces perseverance and spiritual maturity. That idea is tough, practical, and deeply relevant for anyone trying to live out Christianity in a world that can feel skeptical or even hostile.

Miracles that start with Alignment

A troubled heart can feel like a full-time job.

We slow down with John 14:1–14 and let Jesus speak directly into fear, uncertainty, and that nagging sense that you do not have the map. Hearing the passage in both KJV and NIV, we focus on Jesus’ first move: he doesn’t deny the trouble, he redirects our trust, calling us to believe in God and believe in him with the same certainty.

Then we sit with the disciples’ honest confusion. Thomas asks the question most of us have asked in our own way, and Jesus answers with one of the clearest claims in Scripture: “I am the way and the truth and the life.”

Mark 6:1-6 puts us in Nazareth as Jesus teaches in the synagogue, amazes the crowd, and then gets rejected by the very people who think they already have him figured out. I read the passage in both the King James Version and the NIV, then slow down to unpack what’s really happening when familiarity turns into offense.

We talk about why Jesus says a prophet is without honor at home, how people judged him by his past, his family, and his small-town life, and what the Bible means when it points to unbelief.
