Toñi, also known as “La Abuela” (the grandmother), is the oldest known member of the critically endangered Iberian orca population.

Spanish authorities have opened an investigation into what happened. The case comes at a time when Iberian orcas are already under intense pressure. 

Fewer than 30 are believed to remain, while their interactions with boats along the coasts of Spain and Portugal have caused growing tension in recent years.

The Animal Reader spoke with Janek Andre, founder of Iberian Orca Guardians and WeWhale, about Toñi’s condition, what may have happened to her and the investigation.
