How do I overcome my addiction to masturbation and sexual imagination? A man admits a long struggle with masturbation and sexual fantasy, and asks Barry Long how to stop feeding it. Barry says the real problem is not the girls in short skirts but the ‘psychic tongue’ of imagination that keeps reaching out and exciting the sexual demon in man. The only way to weaken it is ‘prayer and fasting’ Barry say – refusing to look, refusing to indulge fantasy, refusing to feed the habit in any way, even when it erupts in erotic dreams. 

Two other men also ask about the same habit. One describes it more as a piercing longing, a deep ache for woman that seems to haunt him. The other asks what is wrong with simply enjoying the habit – “why burn?”, he asks. Barry answers that ‘enjoying it’ is exactly how the demon survives, and that the real work is to endure the burn and starve it of every image and indulgence.

“There’s a demon in us, the demon of sex – it is in all of us, and until we are able to get rid of it… It’s really hard. The only way that gets rid of this demon is to really love… the one way is for man to give himself totally and utterly to the love of a woman.”

Over time, giving up imagination not just sexually but about past and future brings him more into the present. Barry stresses that this is hard work and deeply subtle, but the sign of success is simple: one day he discovers that he is no longer troubled – and nothing of value has been lost in the process.

How does my woman's past, including past lovers, affect me? A man asks Barry how a woman’s past — the energies of her past lovers, her mother and father, and so on — affect him. Barry says that her past is all that has accumulated in her — past lovers, mother, father, the life she has lived – and there is pain and emotion attached. The man’s job is to take that world out of her – the penis, “a loving penis,” is made to take the world out of a woman.

Barry adds that a woman shouldn’t have any world in her; her fundamental state is pure love, and the world has been put into her through hurt and disappointments. Fear can tighten her vagina, and the man must gently approach her with a demonstration of love, without impatience, so she opens to him slowly.

The man adds he was naïve, took more than he could handle, and became more vulnerable to sex. Barry acknowledges this and says the greater the love in a man—through having practised love—the more he can handle, because love dissolves what is taken in. If love is not there sufficiently, there can be transference.

The one cure, Barry says, is love: the more love in a man, the more empty and absent he becomes, and the spiritual life is to become more and more absent.

She says she has been in a relationship for three and a half years, and two things keep coming up: her doubt—“what am I doing here in this relationship?”—and her partner's moodiness. She says she could never fully leave, and she could never fully be there.

Barry says it is a compromise and that eventually in love you have to give up compromise. He says if the man doesn’t change and doesn’t love her enough, she has to leave him. He tells her she doubts because she is not being loved enough, and says any woman will get doubtful if she’s not loved enough. He rejects the idea that she should be there for him, save him, or put up with his emotions and ignorance, and asks why she should waste her young life on someone who makes her unhappy.

Barry engages a man who says that he is afraid and unsure whether he has ever truly loved. Barry distinguishes between having love within oneself and actually loving, and says that real love requires courage, honesty, steadiness, and freedom from fear. Most relationships are distorted because sexuality, excitement, fear, and emotional defences are mistaken for love.

Barry describes a man’s task as remaining firm, tender, and truthful rather than seeking excitement or retreating in fear, and says that genuine loving means approaching a woman without manipulation, without using sex for gratification, and without doubting one’s own love when fear arises. Much conflict between men and women comes from accumulated pain, emotional hurt, and deep confusion about love, which can erupt destructively even when one partner is trying to love sincerely. Barry distinguishes between having love within oneself and actually loving, and says that real love requires courage, honesty, steadiness, and freedom from fear. Most relationships are distorted because sexuality, excitement, fear, and emotional defences are mistaken for love.

Barry describes a man’s task as remaining firm, tender, and truthful rather than seeking excitement or retreating in fear, and says that genuine loving means approaching a woman without manipulation, without using sex for gratification, and without doubting one’s own love when fear arises. Much conflict between men and women comes from accumulated pain, emotional hurt, and deep confusion about love, which can erupt destructively even when one partner is trying to love sincerely. One life lived right is a victory in this cosmic experiment and, he says, matters far more than any scientific breakthrough or imagined contact with distant, supposedly higher forms of life – the only real gift we bring to Earth is love.

If our scientists met other life, they would only transmit their fear and unhappiness. Therefore no genuine contact with other life in the universe is possible at this time, until love rules life on Earth; the universe itself withholds that meeting until we fulfil the mission of bringing love to this planet – until love flowers here, no real contact with other life is possible.

Barry pre-sages and anticipates a future in which humanity flees natural existence and life in the body, moving instead into a mental, virtual existence. Rather than living on the earth in real relationship, we will increasingly inhabit virtual worlds, pressing buttons in the brain for whatever experience we want – such as an orgasm. As this takes over, it will replace the need for love, and both the world and the individual will find themselves in an ever more loveless existence.

"The only free will that we have is when we have no will, and then there is only the Divine Will, which is every moment. Then I have no will on my own, then I am free."

A woman asks Barry Long how much free will does she really have and how she can 'choose' to let go of anger if, as he says, there is no free will. Barry replies that the only real freedom is when there is no personal will at all, only Divine Will operating in every moment. 

What we normally call 'choice' is simply the self reacting from past experience, likes and dislikes. Holding anger, Barry says, is like walking on broken glass: once you truly recognise that it hurts, you don’t 'decide' not to step on it – you simply don’t. In the same way, once anger is seen as pain in the body, it naturally drops away without a big inner drama of decision. 

Real spiritual life moves towards giving up unnecessary choices and decisions, and living in trust that the Divine Will is already running everything – including the moment when anger ends.

I have become a computer-addicted workaholic – how do I stop losing my life to the screen? A man who works in software admits that his life is being swallowed by the computer. He feels like a workaholic whose mind is constantly running on concepts, screens and deadlines, while his body and real life fade into the background. Barry Long responds by exposing the unreality of the computer world: it grips the brain, builds momentum in the mind, and gradually robs a man of the simple sense of being alive in his body. He warns that humanity is in danger of becoming “computerholic,” living more and more in virtuality and less in love, life and real sensation. Barry points out that this planet is for sensory perception, relationship and the use of the body, not for escaping into mental inventions. His guidance is to recognise the spell, return to the body, and give life and love priority over the machine-driven demands of work.

In this short dialogue, recorded in Leicester in 1996, Barry Long speaks about computers and virtual reality with a clarity that now sounds prophetic. Long before social media, smartphones or AI-driven feeds, he warned that man would become “transfixed” by the screen, living more and more in conceptual, man-made worlds and less in the simple, sensory reality of his own body. He foresaw a time when the computer’s momentum in the brain would steal a person’s capacity to feel life, to love and to relate, and when humanity would start to invent virtual realities to replace the direct experience of being here and now. Nearly three decades later, in an age of constant connectivity, immersive virtual realities and AI-generated everything, his warnings about 'computerholics' and the loss of real life read like a presaging of our current condition.

'Man is going to become so transfixed with his computers and things that he loses the sense of life in his body… This is a planet of sensory perception and life and love and use of the body, and those things he will have to leave that body and invent for himself a virtual reality of his own making.'

]]> A man who works in software admits that his life is being swallowed by the computer. He feels like a workaholic whose mind is constantly running on concepts, screens and deadlines, while his body and real life fade into the background. Barry Long responds by exposing the unreality of the computer world: it grips the brain, builds momentum in the mind, and gradually robs a man of the simple sense of being alive in his body. He warns that humanity is in danger of becoming “computerholic,” living more and more in virtuality and less in love, life and real sensation. Barry points out that this planet is for sensory perception, relationship and the use of the body, not for escaping into mental inventions. His guidance is to recognise the spell, return to the body, and give life and love priority over the machine-driven demands of work.

In this short dialogue, recorded in Leicester in 1996, Barry Long speaks about computers and virtual reality with a clarity that now sounds prophetic. Long before social media, smartphones or AI-driven feeds, he warned that man would become “transfixed” by the screen, living more and more in conceptual, man-made worlds and less in the simple, sensory reality of his own body. He foresaw a time when the computer’s momentum in the brain would steal a person’s capacity to feel life, to love and to relate, and when humanity would start to invent virtual realities to replace the direct experience of being here and now. Nearly three decades later, in an age of constant connectivity, immersive virtual realities and AI-generated everything, his warnings about 'computerholics' and the loss of real life read like a presaging of our current condition.

'Man is going to become so transfixed with his computers and things that he loses the sense of life in his body… This is a planet of sensory perception and life and love and use of the body, and those things he will have to leave that body and invent for himself a virtual reality of his own making.'

How long do I wait for my partner to give up his pornography habit? A woman asks Barry Long how long she should give her man to get rid of his sexual deception. She says she discovered that for the last three years he has been buying pornographic magazines and masturbating habitually, although he said he had stopped, and that this has happened before over six years. She felt this was the end of the relationship, she stopped making love with him, and says it seems she has no choice but to go. Barry responds to her, telling her that the point of her life with this man is to do her level best, to love him, to endeavour to make him honest. There is no fixed “how long”; something in her will either stay with him or not, and that movement is guided by a greater intelligence. She will only leave him when she leaves him.

Barry describes how woman, through repeated disappointments, becomes filled with disbelief of man. He says, 'I as man' must take that disbelief out of her not by professing everlasting love, but by actions. She, in turn, has to remain 'as wise as a serpent and as soft as a dove,' not doubting him and not believing him.

She adds that she is terrified to leave because she has no money, has a child and nowhere to go, and says it would be like death to leave. Barry acknowledges this loss as a kind of death, yet says the circumstances of her life are God’s will to make her more pure and to face the human past, especially the mechanical sexual part. He says our task is to bring consciousness into that which is unconscious and mechanical, and that you cannot do anything until you do it.

A man follows up and asks whether it is a matter of disciplining yourself when sexual tendencies arise and what to do when sexual fantasies come. Barry replies that the thing to do is to stop it, not by suppression but by knowing from experience that it leads to excitement and interferes with love. He says sexual fantasizing is a habit ingrained in the human race by society, and that to get rid of it a man must stop reading pornographic magazines and magazines with sexual articles. He says – “You can't play with this thing. It's a beast... There's nothing like sex to become a habit and a momentum. It's the most powerful thing on earth apart from love.”

I’m terrified of my wife’s emotions – how do I reach her without reacting emotionally myself? In this dialogue, a man tells Barry Long he has spent years terrified of his wife’s emotions and of his own reactions – if, for instance, his questions come from intelligence or his angry self.

Barry turns the question around: instead of asking what is wrong with her, the man must ask, “What am I doing to make you emotional?” Barry says no woman becomes emotional without a good reason from her point of view, often rooted in something painful she cannot yet face.

“The question is, why is my wife emotional? Why is my partner emotional? That’s the question… What am I doing or not doing to make you emotional?”

“Our way is always to accuse the other, you know, but my way is to advise people to say, 'What am I doing to make you unhappy or emotional?' … When there’s nothing for emotion to hit against, no resistance, the emotion starts to die…”

True love means taking responsibility for the impact one has, asking sincerely, and then listening without defence, justification, or counterattack. When there is no resistance, emotion eventually dies down because it finds nothing to strike. Otherwise, mutual blame hardens into a growing wall of resentment between partners.

During a dialogue, a woman asks how to be a “custodian of love” when her relationship is full of conflict, friction and she becomes defensive and emotional. Barry says every woman contains the “real woman,” yet layers of guilt, self-judgment, and a man’s undermining can stir emotion. Barry adds that women often become emotional when not loved enough or when unconsciously attached to past lovers, projecting old disappointments onto the present man. 

Barry warns that demanding love makes a man go cold, and suggests a clean, temporary separation—with no nightly calls—to discover what they truly love. If they reunite, he recommends a daily, lived tenderness: attention, cuddling, simple joy in being together. Vital presence and acknowledgement of love, not demand or habit, keeps love alive.

She struggles to name one, eventually admitting doubts about trusting herself as a woman and revealing she facilitates workshops on men and women. Barry argues she shouldn’t teach what she isn’t living; truth must be embodied, or it disturbs the teacher. He advises re-listening to his Making Love tapes and emphasizes his view that a loving man’s task is to help absorb a woman’s past through his body and love. He urges her to let go of attachments to past lovers and drop guilt, which he calls arrogance. Until she’s inwardly right, he suggests pausing teaching, being with her man in honesty, and living now—seeing what she is not—so love can be received.

Barry confirms that the past interferes when she identifies with it, and asks about her everyday discontent. She struggles to name one, eventually admitting doubts about trusting herself as a woman and revealing she facilitates workshops on men and women. Barry argues she shouldn’t teach what she isn’t living; truth must be embodied, or it disturbs the teacher. He advises re-listening to his Making Love tapes and emphasizes his view that a loving man’s task is to help absorb a woman’s past through his body and love. He urges her to let go of attachments to past lovers and drop guilt, which he calls arrogance. Until she’s inwardly right, he suggests pausing teaching, being with her man in honesty, and living now—seeing what she is not—so love can be received.
