The Moorish Science Temple, Nation of Islam, and the Nation of Gods and Earths represent a profound legacy of Black spiritual and cultural reclamation that emerged in the early 20th century. Founded by Noble Drew Ali in 1913, the Moorish Science Temple sought to instill a sense of identity among African Americans through an embrace of their indigenous heritage as Moors, emphasizing both Islamic teachings and American culture. This movement laid the groundwork for the Nation of Islam under Elijah Muhammad in the 1930s, which further shaped Black nationalism by promoting self-reliance while reinterpreting Islamic tenets. The Nation of Gods and Earths, evolving from a faction within the Nation of Islam in the 1960s under Clarence 13X (the Father Allah), distinguished itself with an emphasis on Black manhood and empowerment using numerology and linguistic creativity. Despite their differences, these organizations share a commitment to upliftment, self-identity, and community unity—reflecting an enduring quest for dignity amidst historical oppression.
